I saw the northmann last night and Ethan Hawke is amazing in this brought tears to my eyes I loved everyone's performance it is a masterpiece and a feast to the eyes .
And he is a wonderful Canadian. The first film I saw him in as a man , and Uma Therman and Jude Law was Gattica. I am hoping to see this interesting film. I was amazed to learn that my last name has Norwegian roots- Warrior / farmer which makes sense since the Battersby , Crockford and Vowels family come from an are near Lindesfarn , where the first landings happened. My mom is Irish and I was gobsmacked that brown eyed blonds - that lovely Van Morrison song lol- are also because Dublin was a walled Viking city. I hope to see this film in the theatre.
"In saying too much, it limits things" PRECISELY, true art always has some obscure, mysterious and yet enticing elements in them that ultimately broaden and enrich the story.
Just an incredible film Ethan H. Is just a phenomenal talent and I love interviews like this hearing his process and discuss his craft. I could listen to him all day.
Hawke was basically perfectly cast: The Northman is a modern interpretation of the story of Amleth, which itself inspired Shakespeare's Hamlet, a character that Ethan Hawke portrayed in Michael Almereyda's Hamlet from the year 2000.
I've noticed a powerful correlation: the directors who care the most about details tend to make the classic movies that people cherish the most. A large part of the prospective (or actual) audience cares about those details, too. Ever read a forum of fans of an ongoing IP? They notice *everything.*
The most recent film I saw with him in it was the first Purge, which I enjoyed quite a bit at the time. Great actor! I definitely might check this out.
This film is the best epic tale since conan the barb the original obviously i mean so many litttle scenes like when he finds the sword that took me back to conan 10/10
2:35, did Ethan Hawke inadvertently let it slip that Amleth's mother was in cahoots with his uncle Fjölnir? And that Amleth is in for a rude awakening when he finds she neither needs nor wants saving? (If so, what will be his reaction? Matricide?)
i've been studying early British literature this semester in college and i couldn't agree more with what Hawke says about language. you really do lose a TON of characterization when you water down the language of a movie, especially a period piece like this one, to try for mass market appeal. that's something i love about Eggers. he wasn't fucking around with the language in The Witch and he isn't fucking around about it here, either. Hawke's performance was great and some of his dialogue really gave me chills. good stuff.
@@levirosenlieb7798 Beat me to this comment! The Lighthouse blew my mind way open, a fucking masterpiece. Eggers is probably my favorite director of our time.

He’s right. I went to this movie a little bit drunk and I struggled to follow the sort of Shakespearean dialogue. I honestly could’ve used subtitles lol.
For those of us men (and I can only imagine women) who lost their fathers early in life, we mythologize them. I look forward to this movie so much for so many reasons, but that is a big one that always gets me. I love what Ethan says about younger generations, but unfortunately, these days (kids these days!!) that has faded. Started with the Millennial generation, but they choose to simply blame all previous generations, especially "boomers" for everything wrong in the world, while eschewing all the things they achieved.

Fixed it for all the Grammer twats happy now 😀
The young boy who played in this is amazing as well he's a great actor
He played young Bruce Wayne in Batman movie with Robert Pattison who starred in lighthouse that Robert Egger directed before he did Northman

I've grown to really like and admire Ethan Hawke and his body of work. From Explorers to The Northman. He's got cred.

Check out Born To Be Blue and First Reformed if you haven't already! Loved his performances in both.
@@arthousecouch First Reformed was BONE CHILLING
Movie was a masterpiece, brought together by a lot of hard work from many people. Very happy I was able to see it in theaters.
So fuckin good
Saw it yesterday. Started out with 12 other people, by the end it was just me and another couple. Super depressing. Fantastic film.
Ethan is a seriously under-rated actor. I hope he sees more impactful roles before he's through with his career
Well, 2022 is most likely going to be his most epic year yet. Moon Knight, The Northman, The Black Phone, and Knives Out 2. Give me a break!
Talking about his role and got teared up because how beautiful and tragedy it is? RESPECK
This film is an absolute artistic MASTERPIECE. I loved everything about it, I love Eggers as a film maker, it's just brilliant.
Something I’ve never done “on screen” ok Ethan we see you 👀😂
2:29 Man, Ethan Hawke is such a badass. A very insightful man, he tries to find a personal connection to the characters he plays.
3:52 😂😂
Strike brother, STRIKE. That scene was just…EPIC
Great actor, I love him in Great Expectations and Gattaca, and I love how he speaks about Alex.
Ethan Hawke did incredible in this movie. I actually wasn't expecting that and he's a great actor. He should play more roles like it.
Man Hawke was phenomenal, his performance laid down the foundation for the rest of the film to build on
I always love to hear Ethan shares his thought.
Hes so fucking humble. I can’t wait for this film
This film was a 10/10 masterpiece
Ethan's responses and musings throughout this interview were so insightful. What a remarkable film. Thanks for the upload.

The Northman is literally the best movie ive ever seen
Ethan Hawke is such a great actor, dude should get more recognition for his roles.
5:22 Alexander is 45 and just 6 years younger than Ethan... I guess he can kind of still be called a young man :D
Just an incredible film Ethan H. Is just a phenomenal talent and I love interviews like this hearing his process and discuss his craft. I could listen to him all day.
Best role he's ever played. He had maybe 10 min of screen time, and he was extremely impressive.
An absolute gem! I just learned that he wrote a book about 15th century knighthood!
Love the court jester being the spiritual counselor
Best movie of 2022 so far great work

Amazing movie. Thank you Ethan
Very well said, Ethan
When an actor or actress highlight with few minutes, we can asdume there is a good script and good director. The Northman is the case of that
Really poetic when Amleth's father was probably given the same choice of "Love for your family or hate for your enemy" by his jester fool.
this movie rips. seriously the coolest shit I've seen in theaters in years.
Ethan Hawke, you always bring the words into pretty!!
❤️😎👍

EPIC DAMN MOVIE!!!! I love the brutal honestly of Viking culture and religion.
I highly agree with that... Robert Eggers is quite brilliant filmmaker, like Elia Kazan. 👍👌💪👏
He actually called the jester a “gesture” TWICE.

I was thinking about this when I first saw the trailer. Have a look at her eyes and reaction when the king's return is announced.
She betrays his love. Fjolnir I believe forces her hand but I could be wrong.
Yep. And there is around a clip of her ordering the soldiers to kill Amleth. So is most likely that they will be enemies. That she wants him dead.
Your getting close to the truth.
