    Thank you for an interesting video, I hope that your health issues clear up soon and that you are back to full strength. I can relate to some of your problems, but by tramping the mountains, I'm managing to keep myself out of trouble, health wise. I would say that the mountains have saved me, I'm 76 and been in the hills most of my life as a guide and bushcraft instructor. I have done 32 tramps so far this year and hope to do more before the year is out. May I be so bold as to tell you to. "Keep walking the hills for as long as you are able". This will make stress fall from your shoulders like the leaves from the trees in Autumn and keep all the organs in tune with each other. If time permits, at least twice a week (I mean with a pack). All my peers, who do the same as me, are free of major health problems and can still carry heavy loads. ATB Cheers from the mountains of NZ ☺☺

      Many thanks for your interesting comments and excellent advice. You do sound to be in very good nick! When I'm not 100 per-cent I find I can get trapped into a vicious circle when I get quite demotivated, which then probably contributes to a dip in my health and then when I get ill I don't feel like getting out....chicken or the egg.....which came first? I know you are so right....'keep walking'. I've seen it in older family and friends, when they 'stop', they stay stopped.
      What I would like is to take a year off work and really focus on travelling about and doing all the things I like. I'm sure I'd come back like a new man after that!

    Another fabulous video Chris. I just love the way you put things across. You're an absolute natural story teller. I subscribe to loads of Wild camping You Tubers, but always get a buzz when I see you put a new video up. I Ioved the way you advised anyone wanting an "uplifting video" that they weren't going to get one😄Ironically, That in itself was hugely uplifting. Glad you're on the mend and already looking forward to your next adventure.

    • @ChrisJB
      @ChrisJB  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That is such a nice comment Alan, thank you. Genuinely, I don't feel like a 'natural'.
      Sometimes, depending on how I'm feeling, I can still feel a bit awkward and uncomfortable when talking to the camera. And I still have to stop and hide the camera if I come across people 😆!
      I thought honesty was the best policy at the start, give a kind of 'public health warning' about a very moany video. 😉

    Great video that Chris, lovely memories of your Dads, and your mates. My Dad used to have some right daft saying that proper embarrassed me as a kid, but now I find myself saying them, not so much to my kids as they grown up now but mire to the young lads at work, they just come out and i feel right daft but it keeps him alive a bit in me doesn’t it.
    Going through some shit treatment myself at mo, thanks to the big C, shit word that😏, anyway its put a bloody stop to the Dales 30 at mo, but i’ll be back at them just as soon as i can. In meantime I’ll settle for watching your stuff, always like your stuff, proper interesting. 👍😁⛺️

      Thanks Phil. I'm sorry to hear about your health problems and treatment but if that's what it takes to make you well then it will be worth the hardship once it is behind you. I don't handle health issues very well, Googling things etc, bloody stupid and it's never helpful.
      Ozzy was an absolute one off, I've never known anyone quite like him, having the best sense of humour of anyone I've ever known. Some of his expressions and sayings I can't use in polite company but it doesn't stop me laughing when I think about them! Hope you get well soon pal and back out. Best wishes, Chris

    Hi Chris. You've certainly been through the mill mate this year, and everything makes perfect sense now following on from our last conversation. I also suffer with my own mental health issues, so i can relate first hand to you there. But places like this are the best healing you can have, and are better than any antidepressant and prescription from the doctor. We got some superb views of Great Manshead Hill on our walk earlier this year from Baitings Dam to Blackstone Edge Reservoir. I hope your in a much better and happier place now Chris, both mentally and physically. You take it easy pal. 👍

      @ChrisJB  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks Ian. I don't particularly handle being ill very well.....typical bloke I guess 😀! But this time it just seemed to be one thing after another. You are right of course, the countryside is often the best medicine. Thankfully, most of my health woes have calmed down, though my inactivity has meant my fitness levels aren't good at the moment. Saying that, I've been pretty active of late and I can feel things getting back to normal. Best wishes pal, Chris

    I don't often comment on videos, but yours deserve it. Most You Tube wild campers, and there are millions, strike me as macho poseurs who could clear any bar in 30 seconds dead. (Patrick Dickinson is an honourable exception.) Your videos are reasoned and down to earth. Full of information about the natural world, the countryside and the odd and fascinating history of the land on which you tread. All presented in a straightforward and honest style. Well done. It helps, of course, that I was born and bred in Rochdale and spent a good chunk of my life there. My cousin, now deceased, lived on Kiln Lane and an entertaining and rather eccentric school friend also lived on the council estate at the top of Kiln Lane, the name of which I have forgotten. Heybrook, Smallbridge and the country around Clegg Hall was my childhood playground, now a very distant memory.

      That's very kind Anthony. Like you, I'm finding I watch less and less YT-ers these days. There will always be a core who I'll always watch but anything remotely clickbaity just makes me ignore.
      I'm curious about the Milnrow folk you mentioned. What was your cousin called? Growing up in Milnrow, everyone knew each other (and each other's business!). Clegg Hall was one of our places too, all derelict back then, we sometimes fished on the canal between there and Firgrove too.

      @@ChrisJB My cousin was called Joe (or Joseph) Lamb. He led a quiet, but decent life and died, of cancer, about five or so years ago. He was a good father and family man. My school friend, who I haven't seen since my school days, in the very early Sixties at Rochdale Tech, was a different kettle of fish. He liked motorcycles, although he was too young to ride one and also shotguns, as did a great many residents of the estate at the top of Kiln Lane, or so it seemed. His name, if I recall correctly, was Harold Ashworth, we called him Harry Ash, or as was the habit of schoolboys at that time, just by his surname. Our shared humour had a really bizarre theme, but provided us with endless merriment. I lived in Hamer at that time and in summer a g

      ....... sorry about that, pressed the wrong key. Anyway I lived in Hamer and a regular summer adventure was for a small group of us kids, to walk unsupervised across Albert Royds Street (no speed limit at all then) along the dirt track by the River Beal, past the foul smelling slaughterhouse, onwards to the railway, canal and Clegg Hall, thence through the countryside to Hollingworth Lake. Later to return by the same route, tired, sweaty, but by no means sad.

    Hi Chris.
    Sorry to hear of your health issues, but glad it hasn't dampened your ardour for local history. It was full of supposition and conjecture (meant complimentary) but very believable.
    Your mate Ozzy sounds like a fella called Norman I used to work with. He had some funny phrases. One he used to say if you were going to the dentists (pertinent to your teeth problems) was "Are t goin' fer a new fireplace". I never asked what it meant, but it's probably something about the mouth being a focal point in your face?
    Hope you're feeling better, atb, Paul

    • @ChrisJB
      @ChrisJB  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hello Paul. Yes, much conjecture really. I wish I could find some long lost historical source that would confirm I'm on the right lines....or not! I think the mystery of it all adds to the appeal of the place.
      I do like our old characters. One of my favourite Ozzy-isms was...."it's only a rough guide", trotted out when he was breaking some sort of rule, eg ignoring a 'Private Land' sign and trespassing when out birdwatching!

Re-the moors up there and the old ways we have the Lugg flood plains here, which contain the largest Lammas meadows in the country. I love em. In fact I've just got a book exploring the history and will share on YT. A decent pitch with some great tales of Ozzy. I know the amazing chap you mean - we've lost a good few. Hello Mark. I guess it's an age thing, what once we could shrug off now sets us back. Quite frustrating. I've read about the Lammas meadow approach and it's brilliant, allowing the flowers to thrive and then set seed. I once visited Lugg Meadows so look forward to your sharing on YT. Aye, Oz was a good bloke alright, quite unique. It's his funeral on Friday and we all have to wear something blue as he was a huge Rochdale FC fan. 🙂

      Thank you Micheal, yes I've got more to come as I get older I suppose! The tooth has settled down now and I did Ingleborough a couple of days ago and my breathing felt better on the steep sections.
      Manshead could be my favourite local hill. I juts like the quietness, the views and the general feel of the place.
      I do know the air raid shelters but didn't know much about them until recently.

    Well done for toughing that out, I always jump on your vids as soon as I see them. Love the cotton grass, such a splash of contrast. Do you get sticky sundew your way? My old mate Terry, sadly passed, showed me that and Tormentil, on the North York Moors. A favourite spot of mine there is the green hairstreak. You must be pulling round to have a beer I know I am not right when I just don`t fancy a beer.

      Thanks Steve. It's been a great summer for cotton grass. We do get sundew but it's not common. It does occur not far from here though up Cragg Vale. We do do well for green hairstreaks, I have a site for them not far from the house. I agree re the beer barometer, if I'm not in the mood I must be ill!

    That’s a bugger that Chris! Try to keep smiling….just bought a Hilleberg Enan after having an Akto for the winter, the Enan is superb, a bit heavier than my Notch but such a great porch! Whole kit now 5.5kg so light enough! I had a crown come off 2 years ago and I’ve just left it, seems fine as it is, spent the cash on back packing gear instead Lol, guess I’ll have to get it done in the end, unless I buy a new camera…?

    Hi Chris,
    Well done for getting out,
    I genuinely feel your pain mate, I’ve had the abscess on one of my front teeth, he has to break above my tooth, remove the abscess which he described as a beauty, he then knocked the tip of the root of the tooth off so it didn’t get infected, the only way I can describe it was he virtually sat on my chest and it was like he was putting a ring spanner over the root and trying to yank my face off, he is actually a brilliant dentist and when he stitched my up 2 1/2 hrs later he asked if that was alright, which I replied “best 2 1/2 hours of my life” I then paid which was also painful and left, it did the trick so no implant required, but on another tooth where I had a root infection I did have a crown and it kept dropping out so I went for implant, was a pain to get fitted etc and definitely the price, but knowing that’s it has made it worth it.go for it I know it’s a fortune but better then dentures.
    Regarding covid I think I got in feb and sure it’s impacted my lungs, but hard to be sure as I’m as fat as a character from a Dickens novel.
    One other thing to say is audio on this vid was great, I’ve got a rode and made a bit of an arse of it but now know what I’m doing and think it’s a big improvement, what Db do you set it at please ?
    Lastly sorry about your mate, we have got to that stage mate, been to so many funerals in last 9 months, but your attitude of remembering with Fondness is the way to go, good people are still good people way after they have died.
    All the best Chris, hope you make a full Recovery soon. All the best Tito 😊

    • @ChrisJB
      @ChrisJB  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      How do Tito. Teeth are a bloody nightmare aren't they? I think I'm starting to suffer from a bit of dental neglect when I was a lad and I find myself blaming my poor mum for not being more strict with me!
      For whatever reason, my immune system must be a bit weak at the moment, infected stitches, probable Covid, etc. Saying that, I'm definitely on the mend. I've just returned from a night on Ingleborough and I could tell my fitness and breathing was improving. I've also since got the results from the biopsy and all is good which is a weight off my mind.
      Re the Rode, mine doesn't have a numbered Db setting.....just a little triangle which is low, medium and high. I have mine on the lowest setting. Is yours the Rode Wireless Go or something else?
      Aye, good ol' Oz. It's his funeral on Friday and he left instructions for people to either wear the Dale (Rochdale FC) kit, or something blue. It will have to be a blue tie in my case!
      Bye for now, Chris

    • @titothetroddler
      @titothetroddler 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@ChrisJB glad the biopsy is all clear, that’s great news, you will just have to get the work done regarding the teeth then keep on top of them, that’s all you can do, my rode is a wireless go, I think it’s going to be good, but thought I’d knacked the battery which I hadn’t, I had just not read the effing instructions, all sorted for next trip.
      Hope you give your mate good send off, life’s a short trip, an incentive to get out. Wainwright in his later life said he knew every day in the mountain was one day less and that you had to cherish it.

    An old flat mate of mine had one of those implants, front-left. It used to conduct extremes of temperature straight into his skull, so he had to eat and drink in such a way that hot drinks etc. never made contact with it. Of course he forgot from time to time and I vividly remember him holding his head in agony one time after eating ice cream. Something to bear in mind if you're going down that route.

    • @ChrisJB
