How to Grow Majesty Palms || Majesty Palm Care - Ravenea rivularis

  • Majesty palms, Ravenea rivularis, have become a very common tropical houseplant in the U.S. Growing majesty palms indoors isn't always so simple. in this video I cover care for majesty palms including: light for majesty palms, watering majesty palms, fertilizing majesty palms, majesty palm pest and majesty palm troubleshooting. I also talk about picking out healthy plants and how to repot majesty palms. How to grow majesty palms indoors isn't so easy for the average conditions in most homes. When grown as houseplants majesty palms need a lot of light, water, humidity and warmth. Growing majesty palms can however be very rewarding as they grow quickly and add a supreme lushness to inside of the home. Often times majesty palms will grow well indoors but have some discoloration on the foliage from lack of humidity, if the grower can get passed that then it's not that big of deal, but if one wants a perfect looking palm that is easy to grow indoors then I would suggest a kentia palm. Kentia palms are much more expensive but they are practically fool proof, slow growing (so they can remain indoors for many years) and very aesthetically pleasing for the home and garden. With majesty palms liking consistently moist soil, fungus gnats can be an issue. Adding a few inches of sand on the top of the soil can help a lot with that issue, but you'll have to water the plant slowly as to not disturb the sand and make a mess. Mosquito dunk granules are supposed to help also but i've noticed a big improvement when using that method. I also wanted to add that while a Majesty palm can likely do alright for a period of time in lower light it is not ideal for longevity and having a nice looking proportionate houseplant. Oh, and keep the foliage clean, they are dust magnets!

🤣😂 thanks Juan! I noticed there weren't many videos on majesty palms which is weird because they are so common. It was a long video but there was a lot to say about them. I always think it's better to explain everything so there is an understanding of the plant rather than just some quick growing facts that are usually not universal so not helpful to everyone.

Tropical Plant Party yeah agreed. I just bought my second one Majesty from a big box on sale also and got it for 50% off. So I wanted to see if I could grow it in a pot this time until I pick a permanent spot. The first one I’ve had for about 20 years and that thing is about 30/35’ tall now. So I hoping this one will grow the same. But it will obviously take some time. Like the other.

    TIPS
I have a Ravenea Majesty Palm Tree indoors and its flourishing. Every 4 days I take it outside and flood it with two full buckets of water that's been sitting out for 2 days to naturally remove the chlorine and let it drain for a few hours then bring in. I also mist tree with warm water 3 times a week. I've fed it Epsom salts added to top layer of soil and mixed it in an inch deep so when watered it all goes through soil. and palm plant food important during growing period/not through Sept to April.. It sits in a west window and it gets bright light all day and maybe 10 minutes of filtered sun just because. Thete have never been spider mites, just centipedes but they dont harm plant and keep the spider mites away. I do know how to eradict them and probably will in time. It's a harmless natural crystal you put on soil which will cut them up. 😰 I replanted it to a 15bunch pot after I purchased it and will keep it in that size for a long time to keep its growth down. These are needy trees to keep alive so good luck. If you have issues fix it please don't throw them away there are not many left in the wild.
Pls don't handle roots or ever remove soil to clean roots or you will most likely kill the tree. My tree is 11 feet tall now. I like to pop in now and then to see what others are doing and to maybe offer some advice.

When I first got my palm I spent weeks trying to find how to take care of it. I even went to to site of nursery that grew them. I was still unable to get anyone who could help me. There were roots coming out of the drainage holes. In my other plants that meant root bound. I didn't want to repot because I didn't know what kind of soil to use. Thanks for the help and knowledge. Here in HOT Australia, in summer (gets up to 42+ Celsius ) we use a spray on product called 'Droughtsheild'. It is a bit like sunscreen for plants but they can still breathe, keeps the moisture in - it lasts for the whole summer and the plants grow madly. Previously, the whole garden would be blackened - burnt to a crisp. I'm sure there is a similar product in the US...May keep the palms hydrated.

Your yard/pool area looks so lush and inviting! I'm here to see about the majesty palm, and I want to see IF I can keep on in my greenhouse in winter. I keep it at 50-60f , but since my heater isn't specific about temps, a few times it has gone down to 46f and I can see inside my house when it does and have turned the GH heater up higher. I plan on getting a new heater that I can set a specific temperature on it.
I won't be getting one until next spring, when I can bring it home and not have it freeze to death while in my car. I already have 2 hardy palms in there, but, they are hardy to about 10F, maybe 20f now, since they are babies, BUT, anyways, I want to try a majesty palm since they are more delicate looking. Plus, they are everywhere in Big Box stores.
If I end up getting all of the plants that I want to next spring/summer, like Crotons, and other zone 9 plants, I will surely keep my GH at close to 55-60f. When the electric bill comes, I'll just have to bend over and take it. Plants are a simply wonderful indulgence, worth it if they are happy and looking great, plus, a treat to see in winter if you can pull it off. These CAN deal with 40sF from what you said, and a dry 40s f in my GH should be okay, although I try and stay in high 50'sf anyway. Even with a heater in my GH, it shouldn't get super dry air inside. maybe I can add a pot of water in front of that GH heater too.
Great video, I love how you mentioned how hardy they are, not everybody mentions that kind of thing, just to bring indoors unless you live in Florida, and stuff like that.

Hi Jeff! Very informative video for those interested in these palms. I don't have the room inside for a plant that big, or the patience for the care they need. If I put a plant 5' away from any window in my house, it would literally be in the middle of the room. Good to see Toby. I hope you will do a night video showing all of your outdoor lights. The ones in this video looked very pretty. Thank you for sharing!

Great video... I bought a majesty palm a couple months ago decent sized but it had some burnt leaves so I’ve trimmed off some. I’ve got it on my front patio and drop a shade on that side off the porch. I also have my Phaleanopsis orchids assorted philodendrons and my monstera deliciousa, and my fiddleleaf fig on that side so they get filtered light in the evening because it’s a Western facing bright light. I also try to mist it atleast once or twice a day so far it’s gotten 3 new frawns. I’m hoping it will grow really good for me along with all my other plants. On the other side of my patio I don’t use a shade but mostly sun loving plants geraniums, jade and hens & chickens and sedums and a some other succulents, and a couple huge opuntia prickly pear cactus also a red oleander bush...they seem to all be thriving!! Keep doin what your doing Really enjoy your video’s. Good content also you make me laugh at times. Hope all is well your way☺️

Jamie Floyd I just got a majesty palm and keeping it in medium light in my living room. I move it closer to the window in the evening to get dappled evening light. I read that misting leaves would encourage mites and bugs, that I should just water and drain the base soil once its completely dry. I am in Florida. What’s your recommendation? I clipped some of the browned tips when I got it. So far so good.

Tap water sprayed on the undersides of the “leaves” works too.
If it grows mold or bugs a 50/50 mix of pinesol and fabuloso sprayed on the dirt fixes it for about 5 months before you need to redo it.

UGGG I just typed this on Instagram and when I hit send I got an error that you can't receive new messages lol. "I know you are a busy person But I hope this message finds you well. I was hoping for some advice. I have 2 Majesty Palms. They came potted together. I repotted them alone and put them in my back yard. They started turning brown after a couple of days. It appeared our hot California sun was to much for them. I moved them under my covered patio where they still get bright light and afternoon sun but their condition has not improved. I was hoping for some advice as I would love to put these out by my pool. Have you done a video on these? I watched the video you did but following the advice dose not seem to be helping them. I am guessing because of our vast difference in climates. In closing, I love your videos, always brings a smile to my face."

im sooo sad. i was neglecting my plants for like a month due to very vusy schedule mixed with life issues. came home to a fully yellow frond. literally no excuses... in sunny, warm, extremely humid florida and all i had to do was move it one foot over and it would have been thriving. there's still hope.

Get yourselves a huge tub... fill it with water and throw in magnesium sulfate (Epson salts)... dunk your palm in it for 30min. Take out and let drain thoroughly. Do this with your other tropical planters like your ferns... Beautiful green color, nice deep watering, great growth! I do this maybe 2x a season and I have beautiful full foliage!

Hi, I watch your videos all the time. I love your yard, WOW!!!! I bought 2 majestic palms a few months ago, and they did great all summer. I'm getting ready to bring them inside cause I live in Michigan. Should I get grow lights for them over the winter? I dont have any bright rooms where I have space to keep them near a window. Thanks

For people wanting to grow this outdoors, I’d say a good 9b palm. I’m in 9a, and it survived a good 6 years before dying. It would lose its fronds around 28 degrees F, but the trunk would survive down to around 20. One winter I hit 18 in my yard and that was it for the palm.

    • @TropicalPlantParty
      @TropicalPlantParty  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah they can take some brief cold but they're just so delicate! Lol... 18 degrees is really cold! I'd be so devastated because I know if i were 9a I'd be risking it and planting all kinds of zone 9b and 10 plants and just hoping winters would be mild.

If the roots start to push up above the soil is it okay to leave the top of the roots showing or should you repot?
I have a majesty palm and the roots were pushing up above the soil but I did not want to use a bigger pot because it would be too heavy to move. So I cut off some of the roots at the bottom but then 2 of the frond bulbs died. I had 4 frond bulbs - not sure if that is what they are called. Should I have left the palm being somewhat root bound with the top of the roots showing above the soil?
Also is there a way to grow a majestic palm from a cutting? How could you propagate more plants from your existing majestic palm?

Yay! You're in St Louis too!! I just bought one of these the other day from Home Depot. It looks great, very large, tall and healthy...but I have to keep it inside, it's so big and I'm not sure if I can keep moving it back and forth from inside to outside, especially since I took it out of the plastic pot and put it in a huge ceramic one. It's sitting in my large family room right next to my back window that faces west. I have skylights too and some light that comes in from the front door facing east. I just hope I dont kill it. I keep my house at 75° during the summer, close to that in the winter. It was also very root bound in the plastic pot, packed in with lots of swirling roots and a small bit of root rot. So I loosened up the root ball pretty good, cut back the impacted root swirls to loosen those too and cut the smooshy stuff off. I hope I did everything right and it can exist in my house comfortably.

    Hi! Great video!
I´m really scared right now because we got the palm in May I think, summer in Canada, and we moved to a bigger plant pot so our cats stop throwing it to the floor! :(
We put some stones at the bottom of the container, soil, and cover it with some decorative stones, the last ones are because in that way the cats again... would not dig the soil lol.
Since 3 weeks ago I think, the palm started turning brown, but really bad!!! I thought maybe it needs more water! so I´m watering more, I just did cut a leave that was all brown, and I saw another that is almost complete brown too!!! :( It has 2 new leaves that are not completely open yet, I hope they end opening nice but I can see some brown on those too :(
I hope my palm is not dying, it´s really beautiful, also I started to spry with water a week ago because I saw some tiny spider web in between !!! too tiny!!! is that a disease?
    Please Help!
    And thanks so much!!!

Thank you for this informative video. I just bought my first Majesty Palm. We have two cats and one of them is already obsessed with the palm and eats the lower leaves - hopefully it won't hurt it too much if it's just on the lower fronds? I know this palm isn't toxic to cats but I don't want my cat to be toxic to the palm!

My palm is at least 20 years old and looks good. I keep it next to a window and regularly prune . I do have an excess of thick brown dead looking stem pieces at the base of the fronds I suppose where I've pruned. Should I cut those dead pieces down to dirt level?

I have a majesty palm indoor, mine was happy and growing indoors and producing a lot of new spikes from the growing tip, all of the sudden I went to prune and there was a white mold between pieces and when i pushed the whole thing came off the base like it had rotted through. Any tips?? It was a twin so I am not sure if I should clean it out,, remove all the soil, so the other twin doesn't die.

Ahhh you make me nervous! I live in Canada and I got one for a fairly good price. It actually got a tiny bit of brown tips being kept out in spring here (had some very sunny hot days around 37C). I brought it inside about 6 feet away from an East facing window and it’s been doing a lot better. I’ve got 2 new fronds coming up, 1 slowly unfurling. I’m nervous about correctly watering etc. It’s been about a month now.
Do you think Schultz 10-15-10 liquid fertilizer would be good for it?

Thank you so much for your video!!! So helpful!!! I have watched it like 6 times. Lol. So I bought 2 of these at Lowes. They had them inside I brought them home and I keep them outside under a shaded umbrella. I live in Northern California and its sunny mostly and currently hot. I just repot them in ceramic larger planters with half palm soil and half potting soil. So far they look good. How long do you think I have to wait to move them to full sun exposure? They would get like 2-3 hours of sun exposure when I finally move them. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks again!

Hello, Irene! Generally 2 weeks per hour of sunlight is a safe acclimation rate. I rarely have the patience for that and do it 1 week per hour of sunlight and don't normally have any issues. 2 to 3 hours of sun isn't too much, so I would think a 2 to 3 week acclimation would be just fine.

I tried a majesty palm for the first time last summer and it completely died. I think the soil was too moist and it was planted too deeply. I recently grabbed one from my local big box store that had 2 trunks (or offshoots), as I often see at the big stores, and one is already gone! The same thing that happened to last years, happened to this offshoot in particular. I’m hoping I can replant the remaining one in the same nursery pot with some better draining soil and have her for years to come. Fingers crossed.🤞🏽

So first of all, thank you for this video!! So helpful. Second, you mention a humidifier could help if placed nearby.
What do you think would happen if a few drops of essential oils are in the humidifier (I typically run one for the lovely smells)? Could it damage the palm? Do you think it would effect it at all?

    • @TropicalPlantParty
      @TropicalPlantParty  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Oh i really don't know. If it is consistent then that could cause problems with clogging the pores on the foliage, but I'd think the amount would be so low that it wouldn't do that. There are also some oils that will kill leaves if the solution is strong enough. This something I'm interested to do some reading on. I'll let you know if I find out anything important.
