Those “years of wisdom” behind the singer’s voice is a 21 year old Gregg Allman kid.
One of the greatest masterpieces ever laid down.
Imagine listening to the Allman Brothers in 1972 while driving from Flagstaff to the Grand Canyon and coming on to Peyote......
Randy Andrews ❤️❤️❤️
damn skippy, had the best guitarists and a genius on the mic Allmans lead the way
One of many, many reasons this band is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and have won numerous Grammy awards including a Lifetime Achievement award. Southern Rock, Blues, Jazz they blend it all together to make beautiful music. What amazing talent at every level & instrument. I am so glad I got to see them live in the early days!
Brother, you don't even want to know how young these guys were when they recorded this. Hint, this was from their debut album. Rock on Man.
Allman brothers had two fantastic guitar players. Dickey Betts and Duane Allman. So much guitar playing badassery in one band.... Then Greg Allman’s vocals on top? Whew! Great stuff!
UH, the song starts with Berry Oakley laying down a great bass intro, he was a great guitarist, too.
Amen
Brother Gregg was no slouch on that Hammond organ either.
What about Berry Oakley and the drums twins?
Gregg, singer, wrote this masterpiece when he was 20 yrs old. Watch the Filmore East video to see them in action! It is amazing.
Epic....real music is when you have a grin from ear to ear after you hear it....Gregg on voice with his Hammond B organ, Duane and Dickey on lead guitars...what a treat.
Gregg Allman, the singer, was only about 20 years old when he wrote and recorded this
He also wrote it with burnt match sticks on an ironing board.
This has always been one of my favorite song and the singer Gregg Allman has a solo song from 1987 called I'M NO ANGEL that i really like also
Country, rock, and blues. Sometimes, in their other songs, a hint of jazz. Unique to the Allman Brothers. Glad you enjoyed it, don't stop here, their catalog is full of this music.
ABB always puts a smile on my face. Its epic being there live.
To this day, I still get goosebumps when I hear this song! From the guitars of Duane & Dickey, to Gregg's most soulful voice!
The live version is amazing 😻. The best..
Years ago rolling Stone magazine dedicated an issue to the greatest 100 guitarists of all time,... And imagine everyone's shock when Dwayne was listed No 1!!
Some of us already knew...
Duane was 2 Jimi 1, but Eric should have been 2 (maybe) after Jimi. Duane loved Eric's playing--was in awe of him with him with Cream. Love Duane, too--can't go wrong with any of them though, Si?
@@gregcable3250 Nobody's going to rank himself above his influences....
Back in the day, I'd never heard of Clapton until after the Derek material, and I thought I liked him based on "Layla;" and then he kept disappointing me.... It wasn't till much later that I realized it was never Clapton I liked. Technical expertise is nice; finger speed is nice; but "Skydog" has an extra something.
I think he was the most tasteful player
@@MelissaThompson432 Yes ma'am Skydog is the king.
Yup Prince was left off of that list. That night was the RnR HOF of George Harrison and Prince went off.
Duane was a session player for Wilson Pickett and convinced him to add "Hey Jude" as a final track on his album which ended up being the song Wilson is most recognized for. Clapton heard him on that track and was amazed by his talent. He died at 25 and left a legacy that mortal men cant fill living 100 years....
Derek Trucks
They're called "southern rock." A combination of rock, jazz, and blues. That's Duane Allman on lead guitar and Gregg Allman on vocals and organ. The rest of the band: Jaimoe on drums, Berry Oakley on bass, Butch Trucks also on drums, Dickey Betts guitar. RIP Duane Allman, RIP Gregg Allman, RIP Berry Oakley, RIP Butch Trucks.
Maybe, but as Greg said, "Southern Rock is an oxymoron; Rock 'n Roll IS southern."
Mary it seems like you know the ABB really well . That's fantastic!! Honestly, I love the band so much and consider myself very knowledgable also.
An oxymoron is two words that do not go together. Southern rock is redundant, because rock music came from the south. The southern rock era began with this band. It was a combination of pretty much all styles of music. What happened at this time is the musicians, the studios and the record companies were, for the most part all in the south. And I was a young guitar player growing up in this time, so that was pretty cool. Everybody wanted to play like Dickey Betts and Duane Allman.
@@ddyritz Well I thought they were just Peachy! Eat a Peach.
Duane played slide guitar on Derek & the Dominoes' "Layla." Duane and Eric Clapton together... kinda seems like a natural for your 365 crusade...
Yes! Layla is so awesome!
If you can get hold of the 3 cd set of Layla and other assorted Love Songs, some studio jams are included. Worth buying the set just for that. I've seen a 2 cd set on Amazon, but the 3 cd set is from 20 years ago (or more). My son gave it to me years ago because I'm big on Clapton and Duane Allman
Never knew that! Makes sense though now that you’ve said that!
Greatest American rock band....
As Gregory always said "the term southern rock, is like saying rock rock. All rock music originated in the south".
I'm really thrilled that the young generation is "discovering" the Allman Brothers and other great artists of the 60's and 70's, but at the same time it's saddening to know that today's youth weren't raised on this stuff like my kids were. What is being passed off as "music" today can no way compare with the music from that Golden Era. I know. I was there from the beginning.
Amazingly my friend, I still get the same feelings hearing this 50 years later as you do hearing it for the first time.
No one will remember Britney Spears, J-Lo, Justin Bieber or any those other "entertainers" 50 years from now, but in 2069, they will STILL be listening to the Allman Brothers! I wanted to list more of the new "artists", but they are so blah I can't even remember their names.
Keep on discovering! You'll never regret it!
Who? 😂😂
Best southern rock/ blues band ever. I believe "Gregg Allman" the singer, was only 19 when this was recorded. Yes, years of wisdom in such a young voice. I have loved them since before my teens and I'm 54 now.
Gregg was 21.
@@paulfrombrooklyn5409 I didn't know my ass from a hole in the ground at 21, let alone write something as perfect as this.
👍😎 Peace ✌
Knew you would smile the whole time! Live version has so much more. Southern Rock is ver blues based.
It is blues. Not sure why you guys are trying to rebrand it.
Check out Midnight Rider also on the same album. If you like instrumentals then also Give a listen to Jessica.
This band has been and gone. Most of the original members have passed on. HOWEVER, The Allman Brothers are still and always will be one of the greatest blues rock band EVER !!! Gregg the lead singer has been acclaimed to be one of the best blues rock singers that ever lived.
You should watch the 11:30 September 1970 live at the Fillmore East. The original Band so many never saw....My Father saw them once a few months before Guitarist, Duane Allman died in October, 1971 at the age of 24
There will NEVER be another band like them.
Great song. Dual guitar work from Dickey Betts and the late Duane Allman. The Allman brothers are among one of the best "Southern" rock groups.
Listen to: Not My Cross to Bear, by the Allman Bros.
You gotta check out “Johnny Winter” one of the greatest guitarists of all time. Jimi Hendrix was once asked “ what does it feel like to be the best guitar player in the world?” To which he responded, “I don’t know. You’d have to ask Johnny Winter”
Here he is live in Holland in 1970.
Johnny Winter - Be Careful With A Fool
th-cam.com/video/8Tyg5SJDpiQ/w-d-xo.html
until Stevie Ray Vaughan came along
The Rory Gallagher fans say he said, “I don’t know you’d have to ask Rory Gallagher.” So I’m not too sure about the quote.
Joe Bauers god bless Texas
Johnny Winter Live/And was the very first album I ever bought back 1978 !
I thought it was Jeff Beck. From what I’ve read he was talking about Rory Gallagher at least in one interview. This story just keeps morphing. RIP Johnny Winters, saw him in Dallas with Buggs Henderson at SMU McFarlin Auditorium in the late 70s.
Can you imagine being that young and 1969 recording just amazing!
Their lead singer Greg Allman the greatest White Blues singer ever . And I’ll rank him right up there with the greats as well
why couldn't he be just one of the greatest blues singers???
@@casedismissed8581 That’s true.
So cool watching a young dude discover the greatness. My favorite band of all time. 🥰
Welcome to the music of my youth. ABB live is beyond words.
I'd have to say it's the best tune, ever. Gregg Allman on the Hammond and his vocals, top notch! Duane Allman & Dickey Betts on lead and rhythm guitars, and TWO drummers, and the bass, well, you hear it... Best tune ever. They play their instruments and sing, too. Just, the best.
If I were stranded on a desert island, Allman Bros Live at Fillmore East is a must.
My All Time favorite band! Listen to stormy Monday from the Fillmore.... By the time you get to the end of the song you feel like you just stepped out of church
For me Allman Brothers are the greatest Southern Rock Band of all time.
One of the best bands ever
Southern Rock. Great reaction!
First experience with Southern Rock. Add in the Blues, and you got The Allman Brothers Band. Greg Allman lead singer had the perfect voice on, Whipping Post. Another group is Traffic, " The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys".
The Allman Brothers are a Badass Southern Rock Band. No one sang with more passion than Gregg Allman. His brother Duane is one of the greatest guitarist, that rock music has ever seen. It's almost not fair, that one band had so much talent. Pick any song, and you'll like it.
Two drummers at work, they synced at the climax and played it like they were the backbone being hit. Everyone else was playing hit, the organ notes were the only whip.
I am so glad you're checking out The Allman Brothers. To remember this is 2 drummers not 1. Also you wait to you do live at the Fillmore best album ever made from the seventies live album
The Best of Southern Rock/Blues!
Gregg Allman was one of the greatest Bluesy Soul singers around, right up there with Al Green and Ray Charles.
They were one of the original Jam Bands, along with the Grateful Dead
Duane Allman was a very sought after guitarist. He had a very distinct sound. Duane was also a session guitarist. He played with Wilson Pickett and Aretha Franklin to name a few. He died in a motorcycle accident at the age of 24...sniffle. RIP Duane and Greg.
And there ya have it. Real music by real musicians.
My favorite all time band
You can never go wrong with the Allman Brothers, especially the Allman Brothers live. The singer, Gregg Allman was 20-21 years old.
SKYDOG!
'New' artists related to the Allman Brothers: Gov't Mule; Tedeschi Trucks Band; The Derek Trucks Band; Sea Levell. Related but a little more distantly: the Marcus King Band; Blackberry Smoke; Widespread Panic; Susan Tedeschi, and so many more!
G Leffers Jr All amazing artists. Going to see Marcus King Band in a couple days and I’m so excited
I saw Sea Levell backing up Marshal Tucker back in the late 70s. Both bands came out at the end and Jammed for hours
Duane Allman played guitar played guitar on more tracks by more people than anyone realizes, but he was also in Derrick
And the dominoes with Clapton. That's something you should check out. Layla is the most popular song of theirs
Southern rock, blues rock and a little jazz and some songs are on the country side and also a little bit of soul. So, they touch on many genres but very much roots music. Great musicians and great song writing.
Thanks for the awesome music and great review!
"Years of wisdom" in his voice, well said and totally agree, but amazingly, think Greg was 20(ish) when he wrote and recorded this studio recording...
Welcome to old school real music. I'm old as dirt and saw many of the 60s,70s bands live. Enjoy your journey!
Southern rock. The very beginning.
These guys were the best
If you are from Atlanta, noticed your cap, head down to Macon Ga and tour the new Capricorn studio, that is where this great music was recorded!
Also should go to the Big House Museum. It was the house that the ABB lived in in Macon.
Live at the Fillmore is one of the best live albums ever recorded ever
have you reacted to any Stevie Ray Vaughan? Nothing taken from Duane Allman or any other as they are all outstanding but Stevie is the GOAT of guitar players. He is in another dimension
I once had a roommate who worked the night shift. He'd come home at the break of dawn and blast this song at full volume. Heck of a wake up call.
React to “Not my cross to bare” Another awesome song! Everything they did was great!!!!
I imagine the crescendo at the end like the actual whipping scene...terrible picture of an anguished soul. Great choice!
Great reaction. Subscribed.
You really need to check out more of the music that came out of Macon Ga, during this era. Capricorn records had a full stable of unsung guitar gods on their label and if you like Duane's playing check out his anthology album. He worked with Johnny jenkins, wilson Pickett, eric Clapton, Aretha Franklin and many others. Just an amazing talent to have only made it to 24.
Great tune. Enjoyed your reaction.
Really like your reactions, Allman Brothers are one of the two best southern rock bands ever, Lynyrd Skynyrd being the other. Sadly both have tragic histories, they had two of the best guitarists and Gregg Allman is one of my favorite vocalists, was briefly married to Cher. Would recommend Soulshine from them also, thanks
Greg Allman was in his early to mid twenties when he sang this.
You should go on and play Midnight Rider on the same album. Incredible. They call it "Southern Rock" and they started the genre.
Welcome to the wonders of
SOUTERN ROCK
my friend you grinned the whole time,...you understand GREAT MUSIC!
I heard, that Gregg Allman wrote "Whipping Post", when he was only 17.
the singer, Greg Allman, was about 18 years old, at the time.
He was 21 here but had been singing since his teens. A great singer!
All the band members were superb - known for long jams. It just :cooks" !!!
Welcome to the Ultimate (and probably the first) Jam Band. Wow, saw them many times. NEVER disappointed.
I think the Dead were the first real jam band. ABB maybe 2nd.
As for your "years of experience in his voice" comment, Gregg Allman was 19 years old when he recorded this song. Amazing.
The entire album "Live at the Fillmore East" is worth a listen. Great rock/blues. Stormy Monday, Statesboro Blues,Trouble No More, One Way Out, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed are all bluesy rock. Some pretty songs Midnight Rider, Jessica, Blue Sky and Melssa.
Good for the brother! 🎶✌🍻
Hey I’m glad you Experience the Allman Brothers one of the greatest country rock blues bands of all time. Greg Allman keyboardist and vocals his brother Duane Allman on slide guitar is possibly the greatest slide guitarist of all time. Listen to the Eat a Peach 🍑 album where there’s 25 minutes jam on there where everyone is involved in a solo. Bass, 2 drums and of Dickie Betts on guitar and Duane on slide. Incredible! Greg keyboardist is a great lead singer to enjoy.
Unfortunately there were some tragic accidents to some members to cut them the band short. Enjoy my friend.
Thanks
I love the Allman Brothers. Dickey Betts is awesome. They all are actually!
Yes, Gregg Allman sings with soul and his brother Duane is badass blues guitarist.
Check out Duane Allman studio recording with Wilson Pickett "Hey Jude"
Awesome band ✌
Dual Guitars with the Hammond organ AMAZING
it is what was known as southern rock. definitely some blues sound to it.
You might like "Jessica" from the Allman Brothers, as well as the studio version of "Blue Skies" and "Soul Shine".
Blue Sky.
check it out live..it is so awesome to see the talent
Smart to listen to studio version first on ANY song...some bands change things so much when its live
'One Way Out", is another awesome work. You should definitely listen to The Filmore East recordings.
Duane Allman was the master of the slide guitar.
Got turned on to the Allman Brothers Band in 1970 been my favorite band ever since bar none. You want to check out... In memory of Elizabeth Reed off the at the Fillmore East album . If you like those guitar solos wait till you hear these first Dickey Betts the last solo Duane Allman ... in my opinion greatest guitar solos ever.
Yep it's bluesy. Bluesy Southern Rock. Some other Southern Rock bands are Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, Molly Hatchet, 38 Special,....
I agree, and let me add a few more. The Outlaws, Marshall Tucker Band, Blackfoot, Charlie Daniels Band and The Atlanta Rhythm Section. To a lesser known extent, here is Grinderswitch, Wet Willie and Point Blank.
Just stumbled upon you video. Glad to see the younger generation interested in the rich sounds from the past.
Recommendation: "Bridge of Sighs" by Robin Trower. Rock on youngblood!
great song
Gregg Allman was 21 when "Whipping Post" was recorded. But he does sound like somebody who's seen it all, doesn't he?
It's worth it to study up on Duane Allman; he died when he was 24, so all his legacy of musical greatness happened in about a four year period; from playing on Clapman's Derek tracks, to Wilson Pickett's "Hey, Jude...." ABB is classic and iconic, but there was a LOT of sessions work you might miss if you don't dig deep.
ABB is always best if you watch a live performance; the whole band threw themselves right at the wall the whole time.
You're right; they considered themselves a rock band with blues influences, but they created a sound that came to be called Southern Rock, that's identifiable as a distinct sound.
Who is Clapman?
If you'd like guitar work and I'm pretty sure you do may I suggest a little-known group the California guitar Trio they studied under Robert Fripp which is the lead guitarist and Mastermind behind King Crimson they do a stellar version of Pink Floyd Echoes and an amazing rendition of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody it's something completely different from what you've been listening to and I'm pretty sure you would love it three acoustic guitars prepare to have your mind blown
th-cam.com/video/rPUmCL-EkII/w-d-xo.html
Also warren nouns jazz. Chords
@Lunaversed If you wanna hear another great lead by Duane Allman, then check out his outro solo on Wilson Pickett's cover of "Hey Jude." That's the one Eric Clapton heard and wanted to know who the heck it was. Of course Duane ended up playing on the Layla album with him and was even invited to join Clapton's band Derek And The Dominos.
oh snap that sounds dope I will get to it now! should I do Eric Clapton first then go back or can I go straight to the cover of hey Jude? I don't think I've ever heard Layla lol
@@Luniversed It doesn't matter. You can't go wrong, its all good. Eric Clapton is ranked at #2 in Rolling Stone's greatest guitar players of all time list. He is second only to Jimi Hendrix, who is #1. Duane Allman is #9 on that list. Duane did session work for a time at FAME studios in Muscle Shoals, AL where he played on tons of records, working with everybody from Wilson Picket, to Percy Sledge, Aretha Franklin, King Curtis, Clarence Carter, and more. When Duane left there he rejoined his brother and other bandmates in the Allman Brothers band and the rest is history. He died when he was only 24 years old in a motorcycle accident in my hometown of Macon, Ga. Just goes to show you how respected a player he was to be rated among the best, having lived so short a time. The album Duane played on of Eric's had a massive hit named "Layla" that is a rock classic and still gets heavy airplay. The two of them playing together on that song is unbelievable. Duane's slide guitar work complimented Eric's playing perfectly. You should check out the music documentary "Muscle Shoals" when you get a chance. Its all about the studio there and all the hits that came out of it, as well as Duane and all the other artists at that time.
Duane was considered to the 2nd best guitarist in the country 2nd only to Hendrix. Duane was also self taught. He was truely amazing!!
Allman Bros.? Instant like my friend. Keep it up, you're getting a great education in classic rock! I was raised with this music; and Motown and big band and country and blues and jazz and...... you get the idea. My parents just always played all these "oldies". 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🎸🎸😎
An amazing string section. Will there ever be a better guitar duo than Dickey Betts and Duane Allman?
Greg was 20 when he recorded this song ✌️♥️
Duane Allman and Dicky Betts are the lead guitar players. Greg Allman is on keys.
