  • Galaxy S4 Glass Only Replacement March 2015 Update
    After performing hundreds of glass only replacements we decided to make a new video demonstrating the techniques that we found most useful to achieve a flawless installation. This is a skill that requires practice so sometimes you will damage your AMOLED as there are many things that can go wrong. Patience is the key as well as keeping your surface temperature at the right point to make the glue less sticky but without getting the screen so hot that it burns. For more information visit:

    Nice job.
    I personally find that its best to pop any visible bubbles before applying the new screen, using a paper clip straightened out so you can gently just tap the bubble and remove it. Chasing the small bubbles can be a real PITA!

    Tnx! Was really helpful! My glass was broken and i replaced. But the first time i didn't use uv glue but only double sided tape.. So the touchscreen was a problem after that because the glass didn't make good contact. I order a new glass, and the uv glue en uv lamp. I follow the steps in your video and my phone is like new! Tnx :)

      I've had a few people come in after having the screen done elsewhere but no glue. Like you said the touch never works 100% so yeah, if you're gonna do all the work of removing and cleaning might as well add the LOCA.

    Very good details. Some videos that I saw doesn't tell you to use a sharp object to get to the glass. A matter of fact I initially thought it was the plastic rim that I was trying to get off that is attached to the glass. Needless to say I sort of distorted that plastic as I had heated it up with a heat gun.
    The problem is that I didn't know I needed UV glass glue. I thought the glass came with the glue "painted" onto the replacement glass with a plastic wrap to be pulled off and then glass put down to the phone. Then heat it up with a heat gun to let the glue run and activate. But that's not the case, I would have to buy the glue. And I guess the UV light source?
    The old glue is a pain ... as you did, you rolled off most of it... with me I used nail polish remover for the glue smudges after rolling off most of the glue... works nice.

    Great video, thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge.
    One question though, why disassemble the whole phone just to replace the glass? All the videos that I have found, they pull the phone apart before flipping it over and pulling the glass from the front. Couldn't you just pull the battery and start?

    • @GoCellPhoneRepair
      @GoCellPhoneRepair  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Stephen Smith While that is possible most people tend to use too much LOCA the first few times. If it leaks through the mid-frame you will run into all sorts of complications. With practice you can definitely do it without gutting the phone but it doesn't really add much in the way of completion time and better safe than sorry.

    Great video, directions and explanations! Everything went well (except for the LOCA container breaking and spilling all over, and too much glue on the digitizer), and the periodic testing with the battery in had the touch screen working. Now that the phone is fully assembled the touch screen no longer works, any thoughts?

    • @GoCellPhoneRepair

      +Daryl Cooper Assuming that it worked before the repair I would suspect a damaged or partially connected display cable.

    • @siriuslycooper
      @siriuslycooper 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Go Cell Phone Repair as all was good before and during the repair the problem seems to have been caused by the excess LOCA (from the defective applicator). After replacing the digitizer and the glass (2nd time for glass) all is now working. BTW it would have been much easier for me to have replaced the digitizer/glass unit the first time (add you suggested) rather than attempt the glass only; after the first glass only install I rechecked all connections multiple times before deciding to replace everything; the quality of the LOCA was the problem I had when the tube spout popped out causing the glue itself to run into other areas of the phone. Thanks again for the great videos! I appreciate your attention to detail!

    Excellent repair job! What kind of cloth do you use to clean the glue off with alcohol? I've tried a few different ones but they all leave dust pieces of fabric that are a PITA.

      @GoCellPhoneRepair  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah good question and I'm glad you asked. I need to add a link for those. They call them "LCD Finishing Cloths" (lcdglue.com). I think that they are made of polyester or something else man made because as you said unlike cotton they don't generate lint or dust particles. Sometimes they come with screen protectors if you don't need a large quantity. Otherwise you can also use the pre-moistened wipes that come in the little packages as long as the alcohol is 99%

    great video once again. i want to repair my friends s4. but i have no experience with the octopus glue. is only 3m tape around the display enough to make a nice refurbished s4?

    • @GoCellPhoneRepair
      @GoCellPhoneRepair  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Joost ter Laak It will hold that glass on but a couple of things to expect are dust accumulating between the lens and digitizer and sometimes the touchscreen may stop responding. This can usually be remedied by clicking the lock button off and back on but leads to excessive wear. LOCA glue is much better if you want it to look nice and behave like new but yes, adhesive will usually allow the phone to work most of the time.

    Thanks for the fantastic video :). Quick question: are latex gloves necessary/advised when working with smartphones? I've seen other videos where people where latex gloves, and then some like yours where people don't. Are there any advantages or disadvantages to wearing to them?

    • @GoCellPhoneRepair
      @GoCellPhoneRepair  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you touch the glass on the underside by accident you'll have to remove the fingerprints so for that reason it's never a bad idea to take precautions. After working with phones for a while you get in the habit of not touching lenses and LCDs so for a lot of us it isn't a must although I do usually wear them when working with iPads especially retina displays. They are a real pain to clean. The reason I prefer not to wear them is that your hands get sweaty fast when they can't breathe.

    I found that my technician charges me a lot due to time spent prepping for loca so I just buy the assembly then in my free time fix the broken ones that I take from the customer with loca to supplement my stock. But 1/3 always gets ruined so it's something I do when I go through periods with few customers.

    • @GoCellPhoneRepair
      @GoCellPhoneRepair  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Please keep in mind that this comes with many risks especially when removing the old glass. You can install the new one with adhesive around the edges if thats what they sent you but often we find that the touch is not as sensitive that way and you might find yourself constantly hitting the lock button twice to get it working again. Also dust under the glass is fairly common without the glue behind it.

      +Roger Yoc Technically it can but not reliably. Also you will end up with dust between the glass and digitizer. When it freezes up sometimes you can use the lock button to make it work again. Other times you might have to pull the battery.

      no I'm quoting what I have read, some users saying that the glue is too sticky and that removing it is very difficult and could damage the LCD, and honestly, if the original phone doesn't come with it and works fine why apply then? I get the whole dust thing but I don't know if that's enough reason to do it. I'm just getting information before replacing mine.

    i'm going to be using a heat gun instead of a heat plate. i've seen other videos that say to use a laser thermometer and just make sure the temp doesn't exceed 190F. Curious what your thoughts are on this?

    • @GoCellPhoneRepair
      @GoCellPhoneRepair  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know that people have done this with a heat gun so while it probably takes longer it's definitely possible. 190F sounds about right but keep in mind it depends on which glue was used at the factory. For some strange reason, it seems like the lighter colored lenses require less heat. TBH I really don't do much with regard to monitoring the temperature beyond setting the hot plate. Not just because it stabilizes itself but more so the fact that once you get a feel for how the glue will behave when it gets warm enough its easier to go by feel if that makes sense. When you notice how the playing card slides through smoothly you'll notice when it starts to get cooler because you'll have a lot more resistance which means it is time to add more heat. Also, I set my plate way higher than the max heat for AMOLED because I don't leave it on the plate for more than about ten seconds. If I were to leave it too long it would burn for sure but working the way that you see in the video cuts down on the time that it takes to heat the screen quite a bit.

    • @samsnow7370
      @samsnow7370 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did the same .. no need ... work it 10 seconds at a time ... you'll figure how long you need to continue. Heat gun worked well; provided you have a clamp to hold the heat gun... and wear gloves.

  • @majik895
    @majik895 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I want to use the ghetto method. I do not have a hot plate and the hair dryer does not get hot enough so I thought about laying it in a hot skillet instead of a hot plate. Thinking you could put the gas as low as possible and have the same effect. Do you think this is doable or would it be too hot for the phone?

    • @GoCellPhoneRepair
      @GoCellPhoneRepair  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andy Dillon I think that it is possible just more risky. A guy that I met said he was able to do it with a high powered hair dryer but it took a very long time for the screen to get hot.

    Hi,
    I tried to replace my s4 i9500 by myself with double tape. I managed to disassemble the screen glass but the double tape didn't make the trick as many spots on the lcd touch screen were not being recognized, but when I tried only with the digitizer(without the glass), it worked pretty well, I ended up by tooking it to a local fixer. The issue is that now my phone touch screen doesn't work properly, there are many "blind" spots where I have to long press the screen to get it to work.
    How do I know whether the digitizer/AMOLED were damaged? I took it back to them and they said that this was not their fault.
    Thanks

    • @GoCellPhoneRepair
      @GoCellPhoneRepair  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +augustuslucena1988 This is very common with glass replacements using double sided tape. If the digitizer works with the glass off then it is not damaged. That's the best way to know for sure. If it works sometimes with the glass on but not always there is a good chance that you just need to re-install the glass preferably using LOCA.

    • @augustomlucena
      @augustomlucena 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Go Cell Phone Repair !
      It's very weird cuz eventually it won't work without the glass too! Maybe I didn't make it clear enough but I took it to a guy who I met that promised to fix it (the glass on touch failure) and now there are many blind spots (with the glass on) on the touch screen. Do you think that it's worth trying to replace again the screen or my lcd is dead on arrival? :(

    • @GoCellPhoneRepair
      @GoCellPhoneRepair  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +augustuslucena1988 It sounds like you have a different problem then. It could be a lot of things and not necessarily the screen if it works for a while and then quits even when the glass is off. Difficult to say for sure without further testing.

    • @GoCellPhoneRepair
      @GoCellPhoneRepair  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Find the path of least resistance and save the area by the home button and where the cables are for last. You want to make sure not to damage either of the above so it's nice if the rest is already separated. It's really hard to explain the glass removal process. When I am showing a tech for the first time I heat it up to the point where he or she can pry the glass gently and see bubbles start to form that way they have an idea of hard much force they should have to use. It is very little so the best advice that I can give is to take your time and don't force it. Once it starts separating you'll get the idea hopefully without breaking the display. It's one of those things that gets better with practice.

      mikeelp23 Well, the truth of the matter is that even Samsung gets their OEM parts from China but yes there is a lot of low quality stuff on the market too so you have to be careful. We buy ours from wholesalers that are established and provide high quality replacement parts... from China. You'll usually be able to tell by looking at the logo if it's the same grade as the original. Any blemishes or misprinted logos are a red flag.

      Anton Veszpremi The bracket keeps light from leaking into the camera and proximity sensor so it's kind of important but you might not see a difference if you are lucky. As far as the charge bracket... I'm not sure exactly what you mean by that.

      Anton Veszpremi You can get by without that. It's purpose is to reinforce the port so that it is more durable. Just be careful plugging and unplugging your charger. Any stress from the micro USB connector can damage the port.
