    LYRICS:
    satellites* *
    I wish I was a comet
    Burning up into the night
    I wish I was a comet
    But I’m just a satellite
    I don’t like the limelight
So we don’t hold hands in daylight
    I still drag the closet
All my limbs, they ache inside
And surely all my family and my friends,
    My god and my ends
    They cannot all be wrong
    So I play along:
    We refrain from touch
    We are satellites
    In a cosmic dance
    Amongst the northern lights
    And we orbit fast
But I wish we could collide
    I’m sick of concealing
    I’m sick of the feeling
I no longer want to hide
‘Cos I think it could be love
But I can’t show you enough
I wanna burn through the atmosphere
    Soar like a meteor tonight
    All the gravity between us
Someone bring me down to land
And write a prayer to Venus
    What is life without affection
    Now online they discuss
    Whether I exist
And in the court they decide
    Who I can kiss

I wish I could send this song to my teenage self and say “what you’re feeling right now is completely normal that you will begin to get over after years of taught & internalised homophobia, please don’t worry so much about what people think”. This is literally so poignant I’m close to crying about my sexuality for the first time in about 5 years, especially the line “Surely, my friends and family, my god and my ends, they cannot all be wrong, so I play along.” Idk how Rou managed to sum up the feelings so well when they aren’t even his feelings and he was instead being empathetic towards his friend but it’s masterful.

Songs like this are the masterful work of empathy. Like Rou, I'm a straight male - but my heart aches when I think about someone being told they're wrong for being who they are. I'm glad you're able to feel some sort of acceptance and catharsis from this track :)

Justin DiMatteo Yep, the level of empathy in this track and also in his discussions about it. Like I’ve seen some songs written by LGBT+ people who are still scared to talk about the song being about LGBT+’ness and yet, here he is. So open and honest about it. Thank you for your kind words too!

I didn't think I'd click with this album to this extent, but this song in particular really just blew me away and came at a perfect time in my life. These lyrics hit me so hard, as someone struggling with his sexuality after thinking I had it all figured out. Genuinely heart wrenching, but it was long needed. Looking forward to hearing it live, yeah?

I've loved Shikari for so many years now, they've been such a big part of my life and have inspired me in countless ways. I came out to close friends last year as transgender, and hearing Satellites has given me a whole new level of appreciation for the band. I'm terrified of going public with who I am, and how I want to portray myself, and hearing Rou sing these words has resonated with me deeply - God fucking damn, I can't even begin to express through words how much I adore them. I hope they keep up the good fight for years to come.

I relate much to what you say. I'm openly non-binary (Assigned male at birth), but it's still really scary at times when meeting new people. But the fact that my favorite band of like 9 years made a song for us, it made me so happy, and made me feel the love they have for us.
Be who you are, everyone who judges you suck, you are worth so much more. Much love, friend

    • @sylvainemaple8098
      @sylvainemaple8098 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

As a trans girl in a relationship at the moment, it's amazing how much the song hits the mark for how it feels. That fear of wanting to go out somewhere with the love of my life and experience the beauties of the world, but not knowing how society is going to treat us. By experience alone, this beats out Undercover Agents as my favorite song from Enter Shikari, honestly.
By the way - and by no obligation at all - if you're on the Aether DC, I have a character on Jenova under the same name I have here if you want to to talk about personal experiences.

This song really makes you feel for those who struggled with coming out of the closet back when it wasn't commonly accepted, and those struggling today who live with homophobic family/friends/etc. or those who live in homophobic countries/states/etc.-the perspective of the lyrics, at least to me, immediately made me feel empathic, when I myself am straight. What a lovely song with a fantastic message, and a banger at that, too!
Personally, this song reminds me of when I used to feel embarrassed/scared to express myself in public or in general with many of my past relationships haha

The lyrics: I wish I was a comet
    Burning up into the night
    I wish I was a comet
    But I'm just a satellite
    I don't like the limelight
So we don't hold hands in daylight
    I still drag the closet
All my limbs, they ache inside
And surely all my family and my friends
    My god and my ends
    They cannot all be wrong
    So I play along:
    We refrain from touch
    We are satellites
    Lalalalalala
    In a cosmic dance
    Amongst the northern lights
    Lalalalalala
    And we orbit fast
But I wish we could collide
    I'm sick of concealing
    I'm sick of the feeling
I no longer want to hide
'Cause I think it could be love
('Cause I think it could be love)
But I can't show you enough
(But I can't show you enough)
I wanna burn through the atmosphere

And write a prayer to Venus
    What is life without affection

Lol if you think people listen to music Only if it fits their political ideologies, then you are pretty dumb.
For example I listen to songs from commies bands from the Soviet era. But I am not a communist.
I know a couple neo nazi guys who listen to far left punk rock bands..
      And so on...

@@hi00118 And I told you that this song is not gonna stop any homophobe because people don't listen to songs because of the lyrics, but because of how the song sounds. Otherwise, pop songs and rap wouldn't be popular.
You think people actually listen to the words in the songs?
      No, they don't.

So I listened to the new album on Spotify recently for the first time. It might take me a few more listens in full to appreciate the album in it's entirety and I wasn't really feeling some of the tracks to be honest, but this song is not only by far the standout track on the album in my opinion, but one of the finest songs Shikari have ever came out with. I have been playing it on repeat almost non-stop and I'm sure seeing it live would be awesome. I am straight but the message on this track is so important. Love is universal no matter who you are... I am so proud of this band and I have been following them ever since the Take to the Skies days way back in 2007. This band continues to evolve with each album... well done boys. Enter Shikari for life!

I love these smart details! If you listen to some LGBTQ+ artists like Sophie or Arca, they use a lot of sounds in their production, we are not used to from mainstream pop music. They add a lot of percussion, high pithced vocals, vocoders, synth drums etc. Search for hyperpop music :) I am pretty sure that ES added these layers intentionally to resemble this music movement and it perfectly fits the message of this song! :)
