This is another one of those songs that couldn’t be any other band. I think at this point, they’ve paddled in the shallow end of pretty much every available music swimming pool, and have dived off the high deck into whichever pools they found to be the right temperature. This song is the calm, and the storm. It’s one of the most beautiful things they’ve ever recorded, as well as one of the most intense and furious. I can no longer listen to it without flinching the cautious flinch of an avid listener.
Choosing my words carefully (and having seen the band live twice) I'll say these lyrics are superb. Never feel that you have no power, only question how you and others apply it.
"And now we spark the fire" The previous album was The Spark. This album is what The Spark lead to. I love how all the concepts, the titles and the lyrics of each song intertwine, back to Take to the Skies, making all their work a huge, beatiful picture.
Nice I can actually see each as album title as a kind of metaphor for the stage of the band's progression, with the mindsweep coming before the style switch up

The drumming in this song!!! I remember during The Spark listening party Rob saying he loves switching between triplets/quarters during An Ode. Production is killer, both parts are so good but II is next level insane Edit : chorus of I reminds me of 100gecs. I fucking love it.
Would be so cool if through Marionettes 1 they slowly lowered paper ribbons from the ceiling, then during Marionettes 2 at "Looking up...and gripping their strings" they are at the right height to start pulling on them.
There is unbelievably artistry and beauty in the main chorus of Part 1 2:23-2:53, it's just masterful and truly fresh sounding. I love Part 2 too (particularly the chorus 5:06-5:36) but I don't understand why these comments are filled with 'Part 1 is meh and 2 is the best song they ever made'.

I’m not entirely certain when in a live set I would most want to hear this 1 2 punch, but once we’re back to being able to have normal live concerts I need to see this combo played live

This is the logical junction of the marionet-metaphor and the fire metaphor. To create a better World means to accept the destruction of your previous mindset in order to deny them your obedience.
