Moana should have been a TV series. Imagine seeing seasons explore fleshing out the world building. I know Polynesian culture offers so much and explore
Moana 2 was supposed to be a TV show. They're doing what they did in the early 00s where they take the scrapped episodes of the show, string them together with some half-baked plot or framing device and dump it. Iger decided to make this change last minute as a Hail Mary to try and wring some profit out of the last few years of his tenure (hopefully). This why the marketing is vague and lacking. It's a Disney+ series that no one wanted turned into a movie.

Moana 2 was apparently the canceled Disney+ animated series that Disney now decided to lump and patch to become a movie because they already had the material. In other words, the Atlantis 2 situation again.
I don't know, I have to say Strange World was worse in the advertisement department. I didn't even realize it was a movie, I just thought it was like a park attraction or a museum display or something. Though I am getting very tired of movie ads (especially Disney) giving nothing for us to go on. The trailers are supposed to get us to want to see the movie, but the ads continually try to show as little of what they're selling as they can get away with. It's like the blurbs on the back of book covers!

I watched the movie. It was fine. I'll give it a 6/10. Coming into the film, I heard many say it's a rehash of the first movie, but I have a history with realizing people over-exeggerate certain statements. But here... NO JOKE! It has a very VERY similar structure to Moana 1. Moana 1 consists 5 mini-arcs in this order: (the Motunui arc, the Maui's island arc, the Kakamora arc, the monster realm arc and than the climax). Moana 2 has mostly the same exact structure (the Motunui arc, the "comforting the new sidekicks to the mission" arc, the Kakamora arc, the monster realm arc and than the climax). While events have different purposes (like how the Kakamora were utilized this time), the only real difference is that there's no Maui's island arc (as if that makes a huge difference). It only helps to make it feel like I'm watching a lesser Moana 1. As far as other issues I have with the film: the songs aren't as good as in Moana 1, the humor isn't as good and Matangi was a really big disappointment for what her purpose in the plot was. The movie later tries to justify this in a certain way, but all it does is make me interested in... (SPOILERS FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T WATCHED)... Moana 3. It doesn't do Moana 2 any favors. That said, the adventure was still P fun. While certain aspects are noticably weaker than in Moana 1, I wouldn't say they are bad. The animation was beautiful. I even quite enjoyed the songs honestly (yes, even "What Could be Better Than This" and "Can I Get a Chee-Hoo"). The best song was Get Lost thanks to the catchy melody and the GORGEOUS vocals of Awhimai Fraser (seriously, she gives Idina Menzel a serious run for her money. Like... damn those powerful high notes). The climax was really neat and high-stakes. I think almost everyone will agree it's at least better than the bland as all hell Wish (not really the bar I'm aiming for, but it's better than nothing).
Matangi is like a Black Friday sales Kalshara as much as God Nalo is a stock clearance Stormy from Winx Club. No true motivation for why they are evil and a shallow backstory that means nothing. "Moana, get yo sailing and wailing somewhere else where it matters."
When all the “Moana 2 Is a Cinematic Disaster” videos started coming out I literally started getting them in my feed today and was like “the movie isn’t even out yet why are we upset with it.” APPARENTLY ITS OUT.
The marketing has been bad sincr "Strange World"--though it"s slowly gotten better. That said, JUST funished the movie and it was...meh. Better than "Wish," so that's something.
@rainebows Saw it, and everyone has different tastes. The new crewmembers and Simea felt more like unecessary plot devices than actual characters with depth, the music was better than "Wish" but nowhere close to the first film, and the story/message is pretty boring in contrast to the first film, imo. I'd wait.
That's a bit of an exaggeration, but yeah, the people on this app don't seem satisfied with anything walt disney studios does lately, so we'll get another portion of "Moana 2 is a disgrace" or something like that just like with Frozen 2, Wish, Raya, Strange world etc. (Though Raya and Strange world were actually very underwhelming)
LMM was thee secret ingredient of the original and he worked with the other two artists to make something unique. I think the one thing I rejected when it comes to the popification Disney is that a lot of Broadway songs since arguably rent are made to be contemporary sounding as opposed to the other way around. I think what makes a Broadway style song is when the music actually moves the story and tells you more about the setting and or characters. Moana 2 sort of does that but the lyrics really do make me feel like I'm less in ancient Hawaii and more so like I'm in 2024 la
I thought Moana was set in Ancient Samoa?? Regardless, I agree with you on this. I watched the movie yesterday and the lyrics felt really shallow and didn't move the characters or story very well... literally only the songs by Foa'i were good lol
5:52 Yeah. What curse? Wasnt the curse Tikal slowly killing the planet from the first movie and that's why they holed up on the island and never talked to anyone? The curse that was solved by delivering the heart of tefiti?
you're pronouncing matangi as matang'gi. it's just matangi. other than that, love the video! i now feel compelled to rewatch frozen 2 and check if the soundtrack is actually not as good. also debating whether or not i should listen to the moana 2 soundtrack or wait til i can watch it... which i'll probably watch it once it hits disney+.
@@jaybonn5973tbf, Barbinheimer was more successful, aside from the oppisite vibes to one another, because both are very well known figures before their movies. Like every physician and/or students knows about Oppenheimer and EVERYONE knows about Barbie since she was released
Okay, as someone who has observed this movie, I have to give a spoiler about it that relates to the marketing, so... 6:10 They used the mid-credits as a voice-over in the trailer, even though in that scene he's talking about the end of the movie because of how little presence he had throughout the entire film.
At least I'm not the only one that found the marketing for this movie odd. I mean, it was on my list of "to see" movies for this year, but the marketing has been very blah. Different note, if you haven't seen The Wild Robot, please do, so good, beautiful animation, definitely best animated movie of the year.
This movie would be good as an introduction to a tv series rather than a standalone. I liked the movie, but I already had a few questions, some important and some trivial. The main antagonist feels like it tried to be like the first one, but pulled the rug halfway. The biggest offense was Matangi’s handling from the marketing vs how the actual movie handled her. I don’t really see her as some “misunderstood” antagonist as some people may see her as. Also her with dry hair was a crime /j. I love that Moana only had a bit of a change physically because I relate to this. I don’t look that different from how I looked like at Moana’s age in the first movie. I was like “omg she’s like me lmao” 😂
That’s it I can’t with Disney anymore.... I might as well become an animator and conquer Disney (**Mad at Disney plays in the background**) WHO’S WITH ME!!!! ✊🏾💫
This is how I found out a Moana 2 is happening tbh with all of you. I know boycotts are still happening (so I don't care to watch) but not a single ad has appeared on my end at all
The most disappointing aspect of this is that an animated show would have worked so well. It would have kept Moana in the public consciousness in a positive light. It honestly would have helped trick people to have some excitement for a live action remake instead of distain.
This is sad, I was hoping for something similar to Sinbad’s Eris. Now that was classic villainy with her own special signature. The way Michelle Marie Pfeiffer gave the character a body with just her voice was incredible. Actors who specialize in voice acting are my preference in animation but Pfeiffer made Eris unapologetically bad.
If you asked me to come up with an idea for Moana 2, I'd have Moana go to New Zealand. The islands were settled by the Pacific Islanders, so it'd make sense. Māori New Zealanders are very proud of their culture. Maybe throw in a funny kiwi sidekick. If you don't like that idea, make a prequel about Maui doing all the stuff he's known for. The writers might get into hot water, since Maui is a very reveared figure, and some Pacific Islanders were upset by how he was portrayed in the 1st film.
The marketing is so hilariously bad, i didn't even know it was playing in my country already. I only found out because i checked the playbill for an early wicked screening because that has the disrespect of coming out dec 12th here.
I was initially excited by Moana 2 but, after watching this? I think I’ll just wait for it to come out to Disney so that I don’t end up wasting money a potentially underwhelming film
Well, I saw it yesterday and really enjoyed it. The songs were no where near as good as the first, but finding out this was originally supposed to be a series explains a lot. Plus I’m still living on the high of seeing Wicked the day before, so there’s that. The songs were on par with Tangled the movie with the exception of Mother Knows Best and See the Light (the series had better songs than the movie 🤪). Now I’m actually more impressed at how well the movie turned out. All things considered I’m actually looking forward to Moana 3 now 😆
OK, not really the point of the video, but I am interested to know this because I hear conflicting thoughts about it. How much of a story do you guys think should be in a trailer? Because I know some people legitimately do not want to even know the basic synopsis of a movie before they watch it because they think it "gives away the plot" but I've personally felt that I need to know at least that much or else I don't know if I'm interested.
Not that it matters but I'm just dying to tell someone because I just realized after hearing the name but I went to sleepaway camp with Emily Bear and she was already kind of like a child prodigy back then, she'd already been on the Ellen show. But she was like five years younger than me so a little kid couldn't be THAT talented, and then she never signed up for the camp talent show or the camp musical like yours truly so I doubt she's THAT good. And then ten years passed and I sort of forgot about her and everyone else at camp but here she is and she is like super duper famous now. Freaking weird man, freaking weird. She was like ten years old at camp. She is YOUNG. Very young to be co-composing a Disney freaking musical. Anyway I hardly saw her because she was so much younger than me but her older brother Benji was much closer in age to me and so I interacted with him a fair bit. I tried to look him up on facebook but my friend request from ten+ years ago is still pending lmao.
You know I wish that Disney Made the villain be inspired by a God or a story from Polynesian mythology kind of like how they made the Teka inspired by this God in Polynesian mythology who is the god of volcanoes I forgot what her name was but I do remember that she married this other God who was like a god of rain water and storms I wish I did something like that for the villain instead of making like this basic looking villain that feels like a villain who is trying so hard to be scary but it's just doing a bad job at it cuz that's like the Vibes I get from this villain just a kind of boring villain who want people to be afraid of I hope that's not all she is because I what this equal to be good or at least memorable but I'm not going to get my hopes up

I guess, the bat woman would be more fleshed out in the series this movie was supposed to be. But in the movie they did not have enough time soo.... don't think to long about it, just carry on with other more important stuff.
I went to see Moana 2 yesterday night and I have very mixed feelings. Is it a bad movie? No. Is it a good movie? Debatable. It just feels like a repeat of the first Moana movie but it tries to be on a much more grander scale and while it tries I felt like the movie was missing a huge point about its message and storytelling, but at least the songs were decent. To make a long story short, it should have been an animated series.

I wish Big Hero 6 had a sequel. Why is Disney sleeping on it?
Big hero 6 isnt a sequel..?-
I only watched tha when I was a child but I assumed since the number 6 was in there meant there was 6 big hero movies 💀
Same here
That ‘keep moving forward’ at the end hit way harder than it should have. Rest in peace king.
Matangi is like a Black Friday sales Kalshara as much as God Nalo is a stock clearance Stormy from Winx Club. No true motivation for why they are evil and a shallow backstory that means nothing. "Moana, get yo sailing and wailing somewhere else where it matters."
Good Black 🖤 Friday puns🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Stock clearance sale Stormy ⛈🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
"Moana, get yo sailing and wailing somewhere else where it matters."
Me: 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Wicked 💖💚🖤✨ Enters chat: WE MATTER!!!
Moana 2 doesn't need marketing, it's first movie already a win for having 80 billion minutes views on disney+
yes it does. just so that people know it's happening
Moana should have been a series like tangled 💀
When all the “Moana 2 Is a Cinematic Disaster” videos started coming out I literally started getting them in my feed today and was like “the movie isn’t even out yet why are we upset with it.” APPARENTLY ITS OUT.
The marketing has been bad sincr "Strange World"--though it"s slowly gotten better. That said, JUST funished the movie and it was...meh. Better than "Wish," so that's something.
wait did you just see it? do you think it’s worth going to theatres or just waiting for disney plus
@rainebows Saw it, and everyone has different tastes. The new crewmembers and Simea felt more like unecessary plot devices than actual characters with depth, the music was better than "Wish" but nowhere close to the first film, and the story/message is pretty boring in contrast to the first film, imo. I'd wait.
0:58 cutely hopes for a Tangled The Series related video
Let's be real this movie is gonna make 2 billion or 3 billion but adults will still trash it.
Chat I think we’ll be destroyed if we re-connect the people of the ocean
I got an ad for Moana 2 at the beginning of this video! 😂
7:18 and disney already has a very succesful seafaring franchise which nobody would complain if they just took some cues from.
The only moana 2 ads I ever saw were the quick teaser being like "moana 2, coming to threatres, please dont click the ski-"
You’re probably living under a rock dude
5:52 Yeah. What curse? Wasnt the curse Tikal slowly killing the planet from the first movie and that's why they holed up on the island and never talked to anyone? The curse that was solved by delivering the heart of tefiti?
My sweet unicorn…you were unfortunately right. Would love a video from you on your thoughts following seeing the film and knowing you were right.
you're pronouncing matangi as matang'gi. it's just matangi.
other than that, love the video! i now feel compelled to rewatch frozen 2 and check if the soundtrack is actually not as good. also debating whether or not i should listen to the moana 2 soundtrack or wait til i can watch it... which i'll probably watch it once it hits disney+.
I consider frozen 2 soundtrack better than the original soundtrack.
I just went to Moana 2 and it was fantastic
It's being overshadowed by gladiator and wicked
Just like Barbie 💅🏾💕💖 and Oppenheimer💣💣🧨🧨
@ChenilleSagoe-x9h the numbers are actually nearly 30% less which is a very interesting development in audience entertainment.
@@jaybonn5973tbf, Barbinheimer was more successful, aside from the oppisite vibes to one another, because both are very well known figures before their movies. Like every physician and/or students knows about Oppenheimer and EVERYONE knows about Barbie since she was released
Why are you lying it’s about to open bigger than both Wicked and Gladiator 😭
@jaybonn5973
I’m confused 🤷🏾♀️ the numbers for what?
And where did you find this info
Okay, as someone who has observed this movie, I have to give a spoiler about it that relates to the marketing, so...
6:10 They used the mid-credits as a voice-over in the trailer, even though in that scene he's talking about the end of the movie because of how little presence he had throughout the entire film.
What are your thoughts on arcane
Started getting ads for the movie yesterday. And it came out yesterday.
My jaw DROPPED when Barlow and Bear came up. Really, Disney? REALLY???
At least I'm not the only one that found the marketing for this movie odd. I mean, it was on my list of "to see" movies for this year, but the marketing has been very blah. Different note, if you haven't seen The Wild Robot, please do, so good, beautiful animation, definitely best animated movie of the year.
My real concern is this movie following in the firsts (and Frozens) footsteps where 8 of the 9 songs are in the first act
Hmmmm... I feel as though this checks out for Disney. I mean, not many people even know that The Little Mermaid had sequels that came out🧐
This movie would be good as an introduction to a tv series rather than a standalone.
I might as well become an animator and conquer Disney
(**Mad at Disney plays in the background**)
WHO’S WITH ME!!!! ✊🏾💫
First few seconds and that villain lady doesn't give villain vibes
Honestly could not agree more Moana was surprisingly gods gift to mankind and somehow Moana 2 has less marketing than the live action adaptation
When the older antagonists were better better😅😂
Moana 2 and Transformers One are victims of poor marketing 😭😭😭😭
TIL ALL OUR ONE!!!
This is how I found out a Moana 2 is happening tbh with all of you. I know boycotts are still happening (so I don't care to watch) but not a single ad has appeared on my end at all
King your videos are always so good
Agreed, but Moana 1 is so beloved that the mere announcement of Moana 2 will generate big box office (at least in the short term)
man... and me thinking the marketing of Transformers One was a disaster...
welcome back direct to dvd/vhs sequels
Yup we're there already
The most disappointing aspect of this is that an animated show would have worked so well. It would have kept Moana in the public consciousness in a positive light. It honestly would have helped trick people to have some excitement for a live action remake instead of distain.
Despite the almost non-existent marketing, the original target audience of the first movie came through and almost packed the showing I went to
I listened to matangi's song and i thought it sounded catchy, not great, but catchy.
Would love to see your thoughts on Arcane!
They changed the movie's name in Denmark due to it sharing it's name with a porn movie 👌
I was initially excited by Moana 2 but, after watching this? I think I’ll just wait for it to come out to Disney so that I don’t end up wasting money a potentially underwhelming film
I got a moana 2 ad before this video
On Tangled, any plans to do a slower/spread out review of it like you do Winx?
Well, I saw it yesterday and really enjoyed it. The songs were no where near as good as the first, but finding out this was originally supposed to be a series explains a lot. Plus I’m still living on the high of seeing Wicked the day before, so there’s that. The songs were on par with Tangled the movie with the exception of Mother Knows Best and See the Light (the series had better songs than the movie 🤪). Now I’m actually more impressed at how well the movie turned out.
All things considered I’m actually looking forward to Moana 3 now 😆
excuse me i, for one, am very hype for this
Yay Thomas is here!! Oh Moana 2- ....hi, I guess
I saw Moana, when you see it you will understand why they didn't market the...bat lady or wtf.
They really should've just kept it as a TV show :/
lol I got a Moana 2 ad before the video
You know I wish that Disney Made the villain be inspired by a God or a story from Polynesian mythology kind of like how they made the Teka inspired by this God in Polynesian mythology who is the god of volcanoes I forgot what her name was but I do remember that she married this other God who was like a god of rain water and storms I wish I did something like that for the villain instead of making like this basic looking villain that feels like a villain who is trying so hard to be scary but it's just doing a bad job at it cuz that's like the Vibes I get from this villain just a kind of boring villain who want people to be afraid of I hope that's not all she is because I what this equal to be good or at least memorable but I'm not going to get my hopes up
I just want the animation guild TAG to stop those unnecessary sequels and live action adaptations of their beloved classics
No that’s dumb and just wasting studio’s money
@ no it isn’t
So Moana 2 has the same confusing plot as Frozen 2 ...
guys, just save your money and watch sonic 3 in december
WHICH part of the internet is tired of Lin-Manuel Miranda??? 😭
Fuck Iger for screwing over the Moana tv series which could've been the next Lilo&Stitch tv series, a genuinely good addition, instead turning it into the equivalent of the Land Before Time sequel movies
I thought you said “Roblox” villain and not “roadblock” villain okay I’ll go to bed now
Matangi kinda gives Hades vibes.
I guess, the bat woman would be more fleshed out in the series this movie was supposed to be. But in the movie they did not have enough time soo.... don't think to long about it, just carry on with other more important stuff.
Moana 2, news to me
I just got a Moana 2 add😂
I went to see Moana 2 yesterday night and I have very mixed feelings. Is it a bad movie? No. Is it a good movie? Debatable. It just feels like a repeat of the first Moana movie but it tries to be on a much more grander scale and while it tries I felt like the movie was missing a huge point about its message and storytelling, but at least the songs were decent.
To make a long story short, it should have been an animated series.
