1999 XJ-My airbag light came on after I drove through a deep puddle way too fast in a rainstorm. I often lose accessory power for 10-20 seconds in very wet conditions since my alternator starts slipping. I never had the airbag light come on though. I tried resetting the light by unhooking the battery and that didn't work. I then tried this OBD2 key trick and for some reason that did finally reset the airbag light and everything is fine now. Thanks
The way to do this does not involve pressing the trip button. All you need to do is cycle the key 3 times ,leaving the key on at the third turn . However the trip button as I see many have noticed already is a great way to check full gauge sweep and display test.
Thanks a lot for posting !! But my check engine light is on I did the same thing you said to do the gauges went through their thing but it never showed me any code... Wonder why?
on the 94 Cherokee (maybe 89-96) you turn the key on and off 3 times and then leave it on and count the "check engine" light flashes to get the stored trouble codes. if the battery has been disconnected not long ago it should start with code 12 and end with code 55..Everything in between is something that it is finding a problem with. count the flashes and the long pause is the end of one number and the beginning of another
MrMrsregor thats the method ive always know. its not just for jeeps. not sure if it works on brand new cars now days but its worked on every car ive had up the the tj i have now
Thank you again for a down to earth demonstration - l had read about this previously and felt l was left with a few questions, anyway my point is seeing the demo helps loads. It’s good to read the none threatening and informative threads this demonstration brought to life, my input is to raise the misinformation in other web sound bites regarding how to activate what l understand to be a learning computer and how to activate this process after a new part has been replaced, however l could be completely wrong. Enjoy my jeep experience when it’s working - “every trip is epic”. Maybe Tim might add to this demo another day - if his jeep cooperate’s with my request. Thank you
Thanks for taking the time to show us this vide. But I have the check engine light on the cluster I did this and no code appeared. I also conectes the OBD and no code. Any idea what’s going on
Hello. On my 2001 Jeep Cherokee limited it went through all the machinations like you said, and nothing appeared except my current mileage. Did you ever get it to work? Thank you.
I have a check engine light on my 1998 and I tried this but it showed no codes. It counted from 1 to 9 on the odometer as the speedometer went through the different stages and when it got to the bottom of showed the 999999 but no codes.
is this any sort of 'industry standard' with different vehicles?....say, Mitsubishi montero sport '99?.... i also have the digital Odometer... so?.... wondering is this would work with other makes and models....also...were you having to hold down the 'trip odometer' WHILE...turning the key...or were you just clearing it?...imagine it's got to be done using one of the "Trip Odemeters obviously...and Not your normal mileage odometer... thanks...
@bleepin jeep- this may be a stupid question because i see is a jeep you have, but by any chance do u know if maybe that trick may work with a 2001 toyota corolla?? i thought maybe the could be other car maybe that offer that great option. (if is called like that) u get what i mean.
I have a 2001 jeep xj and I did this and it went through the gauges as yours did in the video but it did not show a code. It just counts from 111111 to 99999 then back again.
01 XJ Sport. Tried this and it didn't work. It went through the motions, but no code came up and the light stayed on. I'm thinking this is meant to reset the lights if you fixed something but the light stays on.
I will have to check this out. I have a 2000 XJ Sport. Manufacture date of 2/2000 so it might have this. My engine light used to come on last year but it stopped a while back and has not been on since but I would still like to know if I have this. Does this actually reset the computer?
when i did this the first time it didn't work because the engine light would turn on and off. When i tried it again it just said 305.7. Is what even a code? If so what could it be? The check gauges light was on before then turned off and it started saying check engine. This is a 98 wrangler if it helps at all. Thanks!
@@oscarcervantes610 yes i have the same problem did the guage thing and it didnt give me any codes. i have a 98 tj and it has no spark and no fuel pump. any ideas anyone?
Same with my '97 Cherokee! The test that worked for mine was, insert key, turn key on - off, on - off, on (do the entire sequence within 5 seconds)! Should see the code pop up, then my check engine light went out!!
I tried this on my JGC 99 WJ and it din't turn out the same way. Tried it 3 times. No code turned up after it went through the 1-9. I also checked checked the gas cap for leakage as well as unfastening the -pole on the battery for resetting the electronically system. CHECK ENGING still there. I will need to replace the air filter and the spark plugs soon anyway. Could it be one of those who triggers the C.E.? I changed the motor oil and filter two weeks ago and checked the level today and refilled so it is within the "safe level".
That test also did not work on my '97 Cherokee!! What did work was this, put the key in, turn key on - off, on - off, on (do the entire sequence in 5 seconds). Should see the code after that!
good shit! Im gonna try it when I get up .. I heard it was something with the gas says the guy at mavis who plugged it in and reset the code to take off the engine light. I still dont know what that meant but when I get the code ill look it up online. Thanks for the tip!!!!! Thats awesome to know I can self diagnose like that on y 2000 Cherokee sport!
Hey man. My CEL came on last night. I pulled codes and got a P0456. I recently got a new gas cap. I retightened it after the reading and put a good 60 miles on it. Did this trick this morning and no codes were displayed, but my CEL is still on. Any idea why the CEL would stay on if this trick isn't showing any codes?
My 01 xj has the light on. I do the trick and it works. But doesn't tell me my codes. Everything eles works. But it dont tell me anything. Then my check engine light comes back on.
I know this is a decade later but I just the code check, it went through the sequence but no code was found. Check engine light came on and still on with no codes
