I thought you'd like a look at this very original 1956 Pontiac Star Chief. This amazing survivor has only 74,xxx original miles on the odometer. It's powered by the factory 317 V8, backed by an automatic trans. It has all original interior and even the factory Air Conditioning. You won't find too many out there like this anymore. It has a cool patina to it, that can only be built up over decades of use. If it were me, I would leave this car as it is and just have fun cruising it. Great to see factory AC. It was an expensive option, like $8,000.00 today, and special order. Seeing these 50s cars reminds me of, well, the 50s, growing up in Southern CA. Some families would buy a new car, ordered through a dealer, and then take the train to Detroit and pick up the car at the factory. The savings paid for a family vacation driving trip back home. Of course, one returned home via Route 66, so all of the attractions accessible were visited, including The Painted Desert and The Petrified Forest. I remember one girl sharing this expedition and recalling that her parents had purchased "Cactus Candy". We all, of course, imagined choking down thorny balls. Many years later, my wife and I (in our Peugeot 405) stopped off at the same attractions. Sure enough, Cactus Candy was for sale, but, to my disappointment, it was just jellied, flavored cubes.
I love the smell inside old cars of this era.
This car brings back memories. When I was a Junior in high school,I got to use my father’s 1956 Pontiac Star Chief to take my date and another couple to our junior prom. Dad’s car had this same color com but was 4 door hardtop! The prom was in March - and it snowed! But we drove through town with all 4 windows down and the heater running full blast!! Aww, to be 16 again!!
My grandfather put me on his lap at 2 and a half tears old in his 56 PONTIAC STAR CHIEF AND LET ME STEER IT DOWN HIS DRIVEWAY I LOVE THAT CAR AND HE TRADED IT IN ON A 63 CATALINA THAT HE GAVE ME IN 75

My dad had one he bought new. It was a 4 door hardtop. It had the inserts over rear wheel openings. A fast car with 4 speed hyrda-matic tranny. He let me take it to town sometimes.
I always find those cars interesting What I really like is the fins on the tail lights other than that she s a fine lady

Nice survivormobile! And the price ain't bad either. I believe you did not mention that 1956 was the last year Pontiac put "suspenders" on them. I read that they almost put them on the '57's until the head of the Pontiac division kiboshed it just before the '57's went into production. Pontiac was in the process of shedding it's image as "an old man's car". The chrome "suspenders" that had run the length of all Pontiacs for many years only served to reinforce that image. By 1959, that "old man's car" image had been shattered with the new "wide track" look, especially with that attractive grill on the '59's.

Unbelievable original! I would leave it as is and get it safe and driveable. Only '56 Pontiac I have ever seen with factory air! Super rare!
About 10 years ago at Carlisle I saw a beat to hell but complete 56 Safari Wagon with factory a/c!

Great uncle had one as pictured in an old photo. Also had a Willys truck he sold to buy this car.
My first car, bought used for $50 in 1973. Same colors to. Took it Canada, Mexico, and every inch of Interstate 80. No ac on mine. Had a reel to reel tape deck and Home speakers on the back seat. Wish I never sold it in 1977.

My grandmother has a 56 Star Chief 2door with like 45k miles, perfect condition I could have had, same color combination as this one. Bad me!
It really is an affordable way to get into the hobby. I'd just clean it up, tune it, and drive it.

Yep, factory air, power brakes, power steering...it's definitely a nice one. That's cool that your Olds even had the power windows and seat.
Cool Pontiac, I wonder what's the story on this one, was it family owned, a barn find etc. This was a pretty rare car in 56 with power steering, factory air and power brakes. Thanks for this one Jeff!
Nice rare survivor even has factory air which has to be very rare. I had a 56 Olds last year that had factory air in it plus power seat and windows. Too bad Pontiac quit making cars.

Yeah, I've had some cars with a lot more "patina" too...lol. That's cool that you have a Trans Am, I'm definitely a huge fan of them.
Actually, in Corpus Christi, Tx., factory AC was HUGE, and not new for the time. Also, after- market AC units were becoming a very viable option. Driving cool was a big deal and people were willing to pay for it.
cool stuff! wanna hear a story? my grandpa and i were yard sailing together up in the mountains one day and he bought me this weird hood ornament for an old car i had no idea what it was... haha my birthday is 3/17 i mention because that's a 317 v8 and i got this star chief 1956 hood ornament light from that yardsale and i was wondering what car it went to...so i looked it up on google for a while i was searching and interestingly it turned out to be this pontiac which is really cool to me because i love pontiacs i had a 2002 pontiac v6 firebird convertible for about 11 years or so and i sold it recently i so totally regret it...but uh thanks uh for letting me share my kind of funny story here! hope you enjoyed and it's a pleasure to learn more about this interesting car i knew nothing about prior. to be honest i believe this is one of those god things he does stuff like this.
um correction though i think mine is actually from a 1956 chieftain which has a slightly different airplane hood ornament light which you can tell with the spikes that come down left and right it gets kind of smaller at the end abruptly so it looks slightly different than this car which has smooth spikes that dont change size on the metal at all.

In 1977, there was a 1958 Pontiac 4 door with 53k for sale, for I think less than $400 at a used car lot. It looked decent, and therefore I test drove it. It had plenty of power, but it needed shocks really bad, plus at least one other thing that I can't remember. Anyway, my dad at the time said that car would not have been worth it if they gave it to me. So I did not bite. Yet, that same car at that same price today would have been a steal! Problem was, I would have had to garage it for 40 years, and start it up and drive it around the block every month or so, as well as do all the time sensitive maintenance, for the last six POTUS's (39 to 45). The first clue to know that it was NOT a good deal was the fact it was being sold by a dealer, and a used car lot at that.
What a beauty. I love the patina! Cars like this are contemporary witnesses of a glory car era. Restoring it would be the destruction of a piece of automobile history.

I have a 56 Pontiac Star Chief
Sign says AM/FM radio. I did not know they were offered in 1956. This has to be extremely rare.
That is absolutely false. No factory car radio made by ANY manufacturer worldwide was AM/FM in 1956. AM/FM in 1962 or 1963 and those radios only went in the top of the line full sized cars as options. In 1964 most full size cars had the option and 1965 and up everybody got the option. As a side note, Motorola made and sold in the very early 60's (61 or 62) a FM only under dash unit and a year or two later they also had a stereo version. Those radios had outstanding tuners and amplifiers in them and with a good set of speakers sounded absolutely awesome.
The GTO was definitely awesome when it came out, but they had some cars in the 50's that were fast for their time. They had some with 300+ HP...more than the Chevy's were making at the time.

We had a ‘56 like that when I was a toddler. White with coral accents. Don’t remember the interior color.

MY FIRST CAR WAS A 56 PONTIAC CHEIFTIAN THAT I BOUGHT OFF OF A USED CAR LOT FOR $150.00 IN 1962 MINE WAS WHITE OVER THE WHOLE BOTTOM WITH A BLUE ROOF AND THE BLUE WAS ON THE DASH AND METAL TRIM INTERIOR IT HAD THE 316 V-8, 2 BARREL CARB SINGLE EXHAUST 215 HP. WITH THE DUAL RANGE 4 SPEED HYDROMATIC TRANS. THE COLOR COMBINATION WAS FACTORY,THE ONLY ONE I EVER SAW WITH THAT COLOR COMBINATION! THE STAR CHIEF IN THIS VIDEO HAS THE SAME WHITE AND BLUE WITH A DIFFERENT COMBINATION,, WHITE ON THE ROOF TO HELP WITH THE AIR CONDITIONING THE STAR CHEIFS MOSTLY CAME WITH.POWER OPTIONS EXCEPT FACTORY AIR CONDITIONING THOSE PONTIAC V-8,S WOULD RUN FOR EVER WITH DECENT CARE . ALMOST NEVER SAW ONE SMOKE OR USE OIL !....////

Factory air conditioning, but no exterior mirrors? That's a strange way to option your car.
Outside mirrors were still optional equipment in those days - Surprisingly,in those days,most buyers only ordered a driver's side mirror...still,it's strange that this car was ordered with no outside mirrors at all....

I always thought this is a completely irrelevant question for classic cars, and as an owner of one, it really annoys me. The answer is "I don't know." in short, but people just blankly stare at you when you say that.
"Yeah, i've had this for about 3 years now. the motor is about a year old, the transmission is rebuilt. original wheels, original paint. :)"

Car looked like it had " chrome eyebrows " to me. I wasn't a Pontiac fan.
