I'm reading Ciaphas Cain: Hero of the Imperium rn and Ambulls make an appearance there. I was so disappointed to learn that its models are all discontinued.
I agree it is really is a crime that isn’t a sweet new model for the Ambull - that said one of my favourite conversions I’ve done to date was using an “Ambot” from Necromunda and sculpting it back into an Ambull
The plastic one will go back into production at some point I'm sure. Blackstone Fortress was an unfortunate victim of them needing cut back which products are in production during the pandemic.
it's funny that the old rogue trader one is actually cheaper than the blackstone fortress one because gw stopped doing the blackstone fortress one around 2020. if i'd known gw weren't going to keep it in stock i would have picked one up when it was available
@@maxbrandt6 because they have a limited number of machines which make the plastic models and they have to decide which moulds to load up on those machines as they run 24/7.
They'll put it back into production eventually. Blackstone Fortress is coming back into print now. Remember, they make the models themselves, but all the cardboard chits, books, and boxes, etc are still printed in china. So, they can make the models, but without all the extras, they can't sell their intended boxed product.
I think I recall that Ambots are controlled by a lobotomised ambull brain also! Which explains their mechanics in game somewhat. Basically an ambull dreadnought
Nah... I guess it would be more servitor-like... While the imperium propaply doesn't give a flip about worker's safety they wouldn't want their mashines to be to independent and an independent ambull, bereft of their flesh and given a mechanical body, might do some unwanted tunneling, some unwanted nibbling on crews or some unwanted escaping...
@@annasstorybox7906 definitely more akin to a servitor in terms of free will, I guess I was going for how it's an even more armoured up ambull with mining drills and I think melta cutters as well?
Yes. There's a ban on even the most simplistic AI in the imperium. Servitors/cyborgs are the way around this. Automated defenses will always have a servitor linked into them as well.
The great joke is, that the Ambull must be some piece of Games Workshops D&D-Europe-Licence legacy. It's so obvious, that this creature was an Umberhulk in the first place.
Amazing paint job man! And it goes perfectly with the model. I always love appreciating the aesthetic of old 40K figures, it’s something utterly unique.
With that color scheme it doesnt seem so old to me. Old models improve a lot with modern paintschemes and techniques IMO!. Great job man! Enjoy the models :D
There was also Ambulls featured in Creatures Anathema, the monster splatbook for the Dark Heresy RPG. Skimming through that book really makes you realize how much 40k aliens are just D&D monsters but from space.
Nice to know where the name came from. I've not painted them yet (primed and waiting) but I put together a pair of Warglaive Pattern Ambots based on a scavenged Knight :)
Paint scheme looks fantastic! 1e Rogue Trader really leaned in to being both an RPG and a wargame, taking a lot of inspiration from D&D with gamemaster-controlled events, and even directly copying specific monsters like umber hulk - I don’t know if the ferro-beast ever reappeared but it’s obviously a renamed rust monster
I think if I were to get more old models I would want DKOK Grenediers or a metal Leeman Russ, and I was hoping for more imperial guard, but the amble is pretty cool
About the bioluminescence- There are quite a few insects and fungi that are bioluminescent in dry (ish, not underwater) environments here are earth, some made up sci-fi monster hailing from a completely alien biosphere? It makes even more sense.
It's funny, once you've seen a lot of Games Workshop models you start to see things in them. Like the Blackstone Ambull looks a bit like it has some cues from the Drycha Hamadreth from Sigmar, with the sort of beehive-like bits. Or perhaps it looks like an Ambull?
I still have the Ambull for Blackstone Fortress NiB. I just can't make up my mind to build/paint it or sell it. I love the old metal one. It's just an awesome mini.
Loving the retro repaints. Can you find a snatcher grabber? I think that was it was called. Prototyranid critter that had an orc head on its weird handtentaclehead thingie.
I would have liked go see an eBay Miniatures Rescue style take on the old model, putting it on a 50mm base and up on a heroic rock so that he was the right size to play as a second Ambul with similar dimensions in game.
The catachan devil always caught my curiosity, i remember gw producing a representation of it for a diorama in i think a wd althoguh was no offical miniature released. Hated the later retcon of the catachan devil being a tyranid as opposed to a unique species.
Dammit, I had one of these... actually the one without the glue-on arms. Looked it up on [generic internet auction site], wish I knew where mine ended up, lol.
I'm reading Ciaphas Cain: Hero of the Imperium rn and Ambulls make an appearance there. I was so disappointed to learn that its models are all discontinued.
Look for Umberhulk Models. They come from D&D but they are very similar creatures.
I agree it is really is a crime that isn’t a sweet new model for the Ambull - that said one of my favourite conversions I’ve done to date was using an “Ambot” from Necromunda and sculpting it back into an Ambull
There are many Umber Hulk models that would work, even more if your into 3D printing. They are basically the same creature
We really badly need a Cain model to boot. And some new Valhallans.
The plastic one will go back into production at some point I'm sure. Blackstone Fortress was an unfortunate victim of them needing cut back which products are in production during the pandemic.
it's funny that the old rogue trader one is actually cheaper than the blackstone fortress one because gw stopped doing the blackstone fortress one around 2020. if i'd known gw weren't going to keep it in stock i would have picked one up when it was available
in my local store in Germany are 2 boxes.. but in English sadly for me
Why the hell did GW do that?! They do that with every figure I really want from them!
@@Onkel_Ranger would you consider shipping it? I’m looking for one. Or maybe just the name of the store, if they have a website

Glad you were given an AMBULL opportunity to pain such a nice mini 😎

Yup, just going to say that!
It's kind of creepy to know that the AdMech can servitor-ize literally anything.
Yes. There's a ban on even the most simplistic AI in the imperium. Servitors/cyborgs are the way around this. Automated defenses will always have a servitor linked into them as well.
Haha, putting that thing on a gold chain and wearing it would be the coolest nerd thing to do!
Was one of those that got excited as soon as I heard the actual code
Excellent work on both models, friggin' awesome that you found an original Ambull mini from 1988! Those are as rare as a hen's tooth!
The great joke is, that the Ambull must be some piece of Games Workshops D&D-Europe-Licence legacy. It's so obvious, that this creature was an Umberhulk in the first place.
Such a great video as always Jay, two fantastic minis and wonderful painting
NECRONS!
Dude, they look awesome.
You’ve definitely drunk the Ambull blue milk.
Bull milk? Must have been salty.
It may just be me but as a newcomer to Warhammer your videos are perfect. There a little bit of lore and some great painting tips
Amazing paint job man! And it goes perfectly with the model. I always love appreciating the aesthetic of old 40K figures, it’s something utterly unique.
At 10:23 is one of the most concise distillations of nostalgia I've ever heard. Also great paint job.
Totally in love by your way to mix old and new ❤
Love that retro look and your paint job really elevates it!
With that color scheme it doesnt seem so old to me. Old models improve a lot with modern paintschemes and techniques IMO!. Great job man! Enjoy the models :D
I love this model! He’d make such a good umber hulk for dungeons and dragons!
I've always liked the similarity too!
Games Workshop actually did release an Umber Hulk model too... its charming in it's own way.
Great stuff friend 👏 👍
Always nice to see someone painting with the proper hand
Really like that paintjob, looks awesome!
👍👍Awesome interpretation by the designer and fantastic painting on both!
I love your retro project videos so much Jay, don't ever change dude!
BRO...I AM AMAZED....I HAD ALMOST FORGOTTEN ABOUT THESE BASTARDS!! THANK YOU FOR THAT RETRO MEMORY
AND THE SMILE I AM WEARING!
I think you did a great job and the best job on the old one.
I love how your paint job brings out the details of the rogue trader model!
Glad you painted up the Old Ambull model my friend
Always enjoy your acquisition and painting videos - keep them coming.
Great episode and stellar painting. They look awesome together. I love the modern paint job on the retro model!
No wood glue?? No sand!!!! Cool video. I want a tunnel digging monster now!! Thanks gents!! Fantastic as always gents!!
A very cool aquisition. I had one (but don't now). I can understand your excitement. I like your painted Ambull(s) & lore.
Damn it looks so awesome. Great paint job. You gave me some ideas with Ambot for my GSC army
I just ordered one off of ebay, really excited to get my hands on it. Now I gotta find one of the Blackstone Fortress ones
Beautiful paint job!
You could do a similar comparison piece on the old and new Zoats.
This was such a fun and informative video.
There was also Ambulls featured in Creatures Anathema, the monster splatbook for the Dark Heresy RPG. Skimming through that book really makes you realize how much 40k aliens are just D&D monsters but from space.
You did a really cool paint job to that model Jay. Nice.👍
Cool vid man these are the best bits of my day
Cool!
Came here for a dope retro model, stayed for a perfect description of why nostalgia happens
I love the new ambul and the Blackstone fortress robots. Your highlights on the blue for the new ambul look great. So does the mandible
Love all your videos
Lots of glowing animals in caves. Look it up. One example glow worms in NZ.
great paint job and model
Ambulls are what I think of when you say bugbear without DnD context
I had one when they first came out. I think I swapped it out for a Wood Elf tree man. 🤣
Great vid. Thank you. 👍😊
The more recent ambot minis are literally some of my favorite minis from GW. I have 8 of them, and each set gives you an additional 2 pairs of legs.
My son got "Claws of the Genestealer" from the library recently (he didn't like it so I read it). That has an ambull in as well.
Nice to know where the name came from. I've not painted them yet (primed and waiting) but I put together a pair of Warglaive Pattern Ambots based on a scavenged Knight :)
Nice little Baldemort impersonation there!
I never made the connection between the ambul and the ambots, really cool lore in that one
I dont do Warhammer anymore, but ur videos are still really entertaining and creative.
There were also kt18 rules for the ambull as well. Cool score!
2:48 That ambull is living on borrowed time, he just doesn't know it... 😆
The 2nd Ciaphas Cain novel got me liking Ambulls. I might have to search for a little gaggle of them someday.
Great video!!
great idea with having the new big one as a female, when you see the two side by side with that in mind its perfect, great job as always :D
About the bioluminescence- There are quite a few insects and fungi that are bioluminescent in dry (ish, not underwater) environments here are earth, some made up sci-fi monster hailing from a completely alien biosphere? It makes even more sense.
0:33 You been watchin' Baldemort? 😉
Now you should build and paint an army of Ambulls. Do it!
It's funny, once you've seen a lot of Games Workshop models you start to see things in them. Like the Blackstone Ambull looks a bit like it has some cues from the Drycha Hamadreth from Sigmar, with the sort of beehive-like bits. Or perhaps it looks like an Ambull?
hey! Great video and paint job Jay, check out the 'fire beetle' they have bioluminescence.
I still have the Ambull for Blackstone Fortress NiB. I just can't make up my mind to build/paint it or sell it.
I love the old metal one. It's just an awesome mini.
Nice, hope you don't forget to paint the babies too.
I love these things :)
Yaaasss love em haha dem 40 K critters
Perfection
I was thinking of Umber Hulks throughout the entire video.
Can't wait to actually get a Ciaphas Cain model so I can recreate Caves of Ice
I would say that the old Ambull had more details than the new one. The new one has numerous smooth areas.
Loving the retro repaints. Can you find a snatcher grabber? I think that was it was called. Prototyranid critter that had an orc head on its weird handtentaclehead thingie.
Bought six the day the ambulls came out, down to three now and they still haven't been painted yet....must move them up the painting line.
i am that one guy who got realy exited
I always wondered what that model in my bin on metal models
Yes
The Ambull is pretty much a D&D Umber Hulk. Still, cool mini.
I was browsing through comments searching for "is it only me or is that just a nice Umber Hulk mini?" :D well now there's two of us lol
0:59 Gw be like ok no more tan sand EOB!! Eob be like, weeeeeell caves would be cool. haha :D
I have two of the old models and keep intending to hunt for a third so I can field them as equivalent to Tyranid raveners.
The Umbra should be an army, it’ll be easy to speed paint, just spray the orb black
I would have liked go see an eBay Miniatures Rescue style take on the old model, putting it on a 50mm base and up on a heroic rock so that he was the right size to play as a second Ambul with similar dimensions in game.
Gotta hand it to the BF version, they did a great job updating
I'd argue that LE7 "Wizard with a Submachine Gun" is Games Workshop's Most FAMOUS Old Model.
The catachan devil always caught my curiosity, i remember gw producing a representation of it for a diorama in i think a wd althoguh was no offical miniature released. Hated the later retcon of the catachan devil being a tyranid as opposed to a unique species.
I regret giving mine away & using the first Power armored marine as a key fob :D
I like the old one better tbh. It has a lot less smooth sections to the armor/carapace which I like more for the vibe
Ngl these would go great with the votann
These are great looking models each but I would have to scrape off the little maggots on the new ambull, great paint job tho! 👍
I’d love to see you do this with the zoats. Please
Dammit, I had one of these... actually the one without the glue-on arms. Looked it up on [generic internet auction site], wish I knew where mine ended up, lol.
Have you ever painted a gazkull? That would be a really cool model for you to paint
You need to get the Braaugh Slave Lord miniature from the Ogre Kingdoms range Eons of Battle. Look up the story about it.
I honestly prefer the older one, it has a certain charm to it that the newer one lacks.
Dam it guys! Never show me them nasty frogs again!
A space marine probably was the brave fellow who tasted it
Do more retro models!!!
Makes me think of Warhammer Umberhulks
Bring back XENOS.
I'd love a side-game for 40k that goes back to those OG rules with GM's and wild terrain dice rolls.
I.think I might know what RT602 might be ,but only becsuse I saw the headder for this vlog.
Did Quake get inspired for it's Shambler?
