You know why this video is so great? Because someone who is fairly new to guitar can basically hear a demo of every essential model on the market and compare. You get to hear a Tele, a Strat, a Paul, a 335, a Jazzmaster, I mean it's pretty good knowledge!
I don't know why, but Rob's reaction at the end brought me so much joy, the way he said "I promise" was like a little kid telling the truth but no one believes him 😂
I get more and more the impression, every time in these videos someone plays a Jazzmaster, that this is a very inspiring guitar. They always start immediately to play totally different. I guess I need one on my own.
Although I'm partial to a variety of "Shred-Type" guits with "Floyds", the Jazzmaster has always been one of my favorites, because NOT ONLY is it SO DIFFERENT in many respects, ALL of the differences make it ABSOLUTELY AMAZING and UNIQUE. I've had original '62s (they were a bit finicky...and too valuable to play out), but my '62-era "Vintera" is "very" close in "tone"...and WAY less finicky...AND more affordable!
@@daveataway1952 it makes much more acoustically, like even Rob said you can hear difference in finish unplugged. When you plug the guitar it's much more difficult to distinguish. Rob has failed to figure out maple and rosewood neck when guitar is amplified.

Yeah, this is the way to go. The acoustic sound of an electric doesn't really matter to someone playing it on stage so it makes sense. Only important thing is what you can hear through the amp.
My takeaway here is that you can't hear much difference beyond the pickup type (among single, hum, p90) other than tele being a tele despite many singles.
That is, quite honestly, one of the most astounding things I've ever seen. I've never been the biggest fan of chappers, but I can't deny, after seeing that, that he has an amazing ear for guitar. I've played guitars for 25+ years and I wouldn't have thought that possible. Great video. Well done Chap.
Maple necks with single coils sound just right. The clarity and crispness is so uncluttered sounding. I find myself aware of intonation for both good and bad.
At least Rob has justified why I have and everyone should have one of everything! He also showed how bridges, trems, and pickup placement do make a difference in sound and stability, which is just as important as pickup tone.
What a great video! Not only did Rob demonstrate his superhuman ears and intuition, once again, but also that you gotta listen for other "tells" sometimes. To be fair, this challenge is actually not as hard as it looks, because the chosen guitars are all very distinctive apart from the Mustang and Jazzmaster. I was actually surprised that Rob had trouble with PRS vs LP because the LP has such a distinct sound, like Lee even said numerous times. There's nothing there that sounds like the LP, because the 335's low end is completely different due to being semi-hollow. The PRS has a much more rounded mid like all PRS do, it sounds much more modern and less vintage. The P90 would be obvious, the mini humbucker also fairly obvious (as Rob rightfully and immediately realized it wasn't a full humbucker or a single coil). So as Rob correctly said, the only hard one really was just the Mustang vs Jazzmaster, and Rob had a 50% chance there anyway.
That was incredible! I'm coming to London from Toronto mid-September and plan to come to the store for a visit. If Rob is still around I would like to quiz him on lottery numbers! See you then!
Not only was Lee fighting the urge to play AC/DC on the SG, but when he played the Strat for the second time, he momentarily broke into some SRV style riffs. When he put on the Firebird, I was expecting a little Hetfield - he didn't go there, but he did play some Skynyrd, and their current guitarist Ricky medlocke plays one ... I was hoping this would go on!
😂😂 The look on lee's face when he was talking about the first guitar being a mahogany neck😅😅😅 And then definitively stating it was in fact the SG.... Basically a shout out to Rob for his great ears from the guys who set these challenges up.
I love these videos, but I'd suggest you guys need to lay down a few more strict rules for these tests (not to take anything away from Rob's obvious skill and knowledge here). Every guitar should have the same fretboard wood and every guitar should be played the same way with the exact same chords and licks, which must be repeated for every pickup and acoustic unplugged test. Also, Rob should wear earmuffs when setting up each new guitar and when switching pickups. The strat is very obvious when just hearing the pickup selector click through between bridge and neck. Lastly, I'd like to see Rob do these challenges without being told exactly what's there and constantly reminded, because this gives a massive advantage to guessing and deducing from probabilities than actually hearing the differences between guitars, which is what this should really be all about. I get that this could be considered too hard, but given the fact he guessed all right here, maybe it's not. He knows his guitars inside out and has done a lot of these kind of challenges now so should be tested properly I think. You could also release 2 different edits of these videos - the regular long form with Rob's comments throughout and a second shorter form edit for people wanting to really play along where just the guitars are heard without any discussion between. Hearing the discussion during really affects one's ability to fully play along and try to work it out for oneself.
I stopped the video in the 335 moment, because I was so impressed I could not bare it anymore. I needed a pause. I'm on my knees. Chappers is unbelievable.
It's funny. when Lee thought Rob was listening for hum on the strat, my thought (which I still think) was that he was listening for the switch to see if it sounded like a 3 way toggle or a 5 way blade. It's a very different sound when you're flipping a 3 way between neck and bridge vs a 5 way. I could even hear it on the mics haha.
