very useful video i have a gs 500 with a top end rattle, now through a bit of research ive discovered the auto cam chain tensioner can go wrong, like you explained, ive been advised to replace the cam chain, is it worth either cleaning up the existing tensioner to see if the noise goes away, or get a manual tensioner, before i start spending that amount off money getting the chain replaced

Hi mate, when replacing how do I reset the tensioner? Do I push all the way in? Obviously it just pushes back out. Any help would be great cheers!

Rotate the crankshaft (at sig gen cover) clockwise to tighten things across the cam gears. Put the tensioner back on without the spring and use an Allen wrench to stick in the hole and apply pressure for force the tensioner to the furthest click. Put the spring and cover on and go ride it.... this is for the standard tensioner..

Asking around the MC websites about removing and checking my Suzuki Bandit cam chain tensioner. Someone mentioned to make sure the timing mark is in the correct position before removal. No mention in my Clymer manual about timing marks. Do you know anything about the timing mark?

Hi buddy as long as you don't turn the engi e over whist the tensioner is off you don't have to worry about timing marks,
There is a timing mark on the crank and 2 timing marks on each cam shaft but these are only relevant if cams are replaced or the timing chain replaced or valves being set..like I say as long as the engine ain't cranked with the tensioner off u don't need to worry about them .

Hi Robert, follow-up question please... After taking out the tensioner, checking and placing back, do I need to do anything else? The tensioner will be in the pushed in position...will it automatically adjust back to the proper distance? I've see instructions to "get a spanner and turn the engine over by the generator." (not sure how to do this) after the tenioner has been put back on. Is there another step after putting the tensioner back on? Thank you!

@@sickcowpie8586 it should adjust back just drop the rigj t hand engine cover and ..with the tensioner fitted put a spanner on the crank nut and turn the engine over clockwise ..Don't turn the wrong way.. and the tensioner will set on the right tooth .. if it still rattles there is a way to get it to go to the next tooth and tighten the chain .. only needed if it rattles ..I fitted a manual tensioner and set the tension myself and it worked great..this link migjt be of interest th-cam.com/video/A9bfKuSVpHU/w-d-xo.html
