I've taken several mule deer with 125gr barnaul sp, they drop deer, also they chrono at nearly 2500fps from my 16" barrel ar, it's pretty hot ammo and definitely shoots flatter than his chart indicates, at 100 yard zero I get 3" of drop at 200, significantly better than the American ammo he has charted.

We live in South Georgia and have kill a lot of deer and hogs with 7.62x39 (125gr SP and 154gr SP ). We use Ruger and HOWA bolt guns, and 16”AR,s all feed and function flawlessly. We have shot out to 150yards with animals dropping like rocks. Great Southeast hunting round. We use steel surplus ammo with great accuracy,we were lucky enough to have purchased thousands of rounds years ago when these rounds cost nothing. We use a 50yard zero.

You jump from 110s to 150s in the 300blk. However there's some great options in the 125 - 135gr range. I'd suggest some comparisons with them, too. It may not do much in factory loading numbers. I don't know since I roll my own blackout. But if you're a hand loader, you will get great performance.

Both are good options for inside 200, over that you should consider larger calibers (308, 6.5CM/PRC, 270, 300WM, etc…)

The x39 still holds the advantage, it has greater case capacity, therefore higher velocity for any given bullet weight, the x39 will give 2250ish fps with 154gr projectiles, the .300 is closer to 1900ish with bullets in the 150gr weight.

I like the 300 Blackout for hunting in the low country, especially if you have to make a shot on a hog from the ground. There is less chance for rounds to carry beyond your line of sight and go beyond property boundaries. Ethically, I limit the 300 Blackout to shots of less than 100 yards anyways to ensure a humane shot.
That said, the 7.62x39 is a great option as well. I think the biggest thing is holding ourselves as hunters to the limitations we place upon ourselves and our equipment.

Black out shines with a 195 gr cavity back at subsonic speed quietly killing deer to 90 yards for me
actually I took my biggest buck of the season last year with one at 35 yards. and it performed like a well placed broadhead. but Ive killed a bunch with that load when I am hunting around houses. but the Barnes black tip is pretty fair supersonic to about 150 yards. but I will be the first to say a black out is a toy compared to the 6.5 Grendel if you want to use a AR to seriously hunt with.

The last 4 whitetail and too many hogs for me to count have been harvested off my property all using S&B 7.62×39 124gr softpoint in various platforms from bolt gun to AR. I have yet to need to track an animal more than 30 yards from point of impact to drop point and most haven't made it more than 15 yards. Inside 200 yards, 7.62×39 is my absolute go to chambering. SOMETIMES, I'll use .308 but then I'm more worried about neighbors, bullet travel, and backstop. And I've had hogs run 50+ yards after being shot with .308 HogHammer loads that made a clean pass through on about a 75 yard shot. No apparent expansion or energy dump as it zipped through that hog. Finally, even with curremt ammo issues, 7.62×39 is MUCH cheaper and more readily available than 300blk every day of the year and in every scenario in recent history. I'll stick with 7.62×39.

I like both rounds, and have a couple rifles in each chambering. With equal weight bullets and equal barrel lengths, the x39 can usually get 200 fps more than the Blackout. For hunting discussion, I don't think a 1000 yard analysis makes much sense. Maybe 200 yards max. Enjoyed the vid, thanks for sharing!

@@andrewduppstadt2120 I definitely feel more recoil with the x39, but both are pretty mild. The Blackout is noticeably milder to me though, comparing both in AR15 rifles with 16" barrels. I also have a Ruger Ranch bolt action in 300BO, and it has very mild recoil as well. My x39 rifles are both AR's 16" and 20".

  • @Prepare2Survive
    @Prepare2Survive ปีที่แล้ว +5

The difference between 7.62x39 and 300 blk at close ranges is similar to the difference between 300 blk and a 357 magnum rifle. In terms of energy 7.62x39 comes in 1st place, 300 blk in 2nd place and 357 magnum rifle in 3rd place. I shoot and handload all 3 calibers. When you look at the load data they are all very similar, not much difference in powder charges for a 125 something grain bullet. The main advantages to a 357 magnum rifle is it's a lot easier to handload than any bottle neck calibers like 7.62x39 or 300 blk. No need to lube the brass before sizing and no need to trim the brass length. Plus 357 magnum is easy to get good accuracy with homemade cast lead bullets. Especially if you powder coat them and a 357 magnum handgun makes a good companion to the rifle. If you want to hunt small game use 38 special ammo in the same rifle.

  • @charlesboston1

the other huge advantage the 7.62x39 has over the blackout is , it is loaded to a sammi pressure max of 45000 cup .... if you have a strong rifle action you can safely load it to the same pressure as the 300 black out and gain even more velocity and energy over the black out round

Dont get me wrong I agree is a 7.62x39 is a better round for shooting a white tail but I dont think this comparison tells the whole story. 300 blk can be loaded with more bullet options and I would dare to bet that 300 blk will penetrate deeper due to the heavier bullets most often loaded in the 300 blk and the fact it is a little slower so it will have less violent expansion. That would mean to me the 300 blk has more versatility then 7.62x39 and I would dare say inside 100 yards would be a better choice for game larger then the typical white tail since it would be more likely to penetrate deep in the vitals. At least thats my theory.. if you test it I will watch it! 😊

interesting report! I built many 300 blackout ar rifles/pistols with excellent results for Florida deer and wild pigs at 50 yds or less. then the subsonic craze started. the hand loaded subsonic ammo we made were extremely accurate and very quiet, but the one shot kill reliability went to crap. was hunting in north Florida few years back and was carrying an under folder ak 47 with Hornady factory steel case loaded with the 123 gr sst soft point bullets , jumped a nice 10 pt buck appx. 75 yds 1 shot and the deer dropped like a rock. In your comparison, the 300 BO bullet weights were much heavier, so bullet drop and energy comparisons are somewhat misleading. Do they not make 300 BO with comparable bullet weights, I.e., 125 gr?

I’ve had both for long time and here’s the reality. 300 is better at sub. Quiet. X39 is 200fps more hp. Neither is great past 200 yards so who cares about accuracy as long as you’re sub 2”. But the only legit real user advantage of 300 is the primers can take a good light trigger. X39 doesn’t. And in an ar it serves you well to polish the ramps and chamber. Not as necessary with 300. So if you like a good light trigger 300. If you want a little more and cheaper hp x39. Cause they are about identical in accuracy. Primers and 400lbs of energy. That’s what really separates em.

You are comparing apples to oranges in most of these, of course a 125 grain 7.62 will be better than a 190 grain SUBSONIC 300blk. Take a 18inch barrel with no suppressor, have the same 125 grain loading. You will get almost identical performance. At worst the 300blk will have maybe 100fps in deviation depending on powder choice and out of what rifle. All this told me is 300blk has more options on the type of ammo variety.

The only difference is the bullet options, platform, and budget, since both had subsonic options for a while. If you were hunting with the "gun muffler", but to pay more for a less capable round sounds silly, so I'm in the 7.62x39mm camp.

7.62x39 is the better performing round... The 300blk is not a terrible caliber...but I look at it like I do the 6.5 Grendel and the 6.8 Creedmore. When you already have 7.62x39...7.62x51.... 308... 30.06.. 270...etc etc...and the ammo for all of these is more plentiful and cheaper....I just don't see the point...there isn't enough difference in performance to justify it. Now, if the military did away with the 5.56 and went with the 6.5 Grendel....I would sell my 5.56 uppers and convert to the Grendel as it preforms much better...ammo would become plentiful...etc etc. But, as it stands the juice doesn't justify the squeeze in these odd ball calibers.

  • @davidjb9199

I am curious, exactly what diameter are the bullets for each? Doesn't the 7.62X39 use a 0.311" bullet and the 300 BO a 0.308" bullet, or am I confused? Some here report much better results using 300 BO hand loads using SST bullets, and I can believe that. Just wondering about diameters, though. I was also going to comment that while the drop comparison is interesting, I would certainly not shoot at game with either of these beyond 200, never mind 400, 500, 600 yards! So, even though I lean toward the 7.62X39 (heavily invested), and the factory load comparison favors the 7.62X39, a focus on more realistic hunting ranges would be more helpful. Other than picking on these minor points, I enjoyed your comparison. I always like having the data! Nice job.

Aw come on??? This isn't a fair comparison. You compared 123-125gr 7.62x39 to five 150, 190 and 208gr 300BLK rounds. This isn't apples to apples, It's apples to grapefruit. Both the 190 and 208 are sub sonic and drop like a rock. There's more 125 bullots available for the 300BLK.
I've killed many pigs and a few deer with both 7.62x39 and 300BLK and can't tell the difference between the two.
The 110gr Hornady 300BLK actually sucks on pigs, it doesn't get enough penetration into the biguns. Go with Fiocchi 125gr SST, they are loaded with Honady's SST bullots. That will put them in the dirt. For 7.62x39 go with Hornady's BLACK, it's loaded with their 123gr SST bullots. That will also put them in the dirt.

For performance irs all about the 110s and 200s.
110s are slightly less energy than 7.62x39, but theu seem to work greay for medium critters and 2 legged threats. The 125s are okay for bigger things like hogs. The 150s are just slow except some specialty loadings. The 200s are VERY slow because thats the point.
Honestly 9x39 would habe been the better option if platforns and cartridges were ever developed to push supersonic performance.

If handloading for a modern firearm, the comparison is essentially a 30cal cartridge with a case capacity of around 20gr of H2O vs a cartridge that can shoot the same bullets but has a case capacity of around 35gr of H2O.
The 300blk is more efficient for subsonic use, but when it comes to supersonic loads, the 7.62x39 can be a significantly more powerful round than the 300blk.

Nice info, but terrible comparison selection. You compared 4 rounds with a 2gr spread against 6 rounds 98grain spread and all but a single round with a %20 increase in mass against its opposition. A fair comparison would have been of similar gr (obviously in the 110-135 range would have been logical with a single outlier being subsonic to drive home that point.) Not that is would have changed the fact that the 7.62x39 would have still won but by small margin, and within a reasonable affective range of about 200 yards either are a good selection.
But when you consider the cost of ammo, availability and variety of barrels and their cost in the ar platform. ect the 300blk is a strong contender. Outside 200 yards time to move up to a hotter platform than either of these.
Btw this will be my first year hunting with 300lk and my ammo choice is Fiocchi .300 Blackout, 125 gr SST for deer and AAC .300 110gr VMAX for hog (my 45acres in E TX is a pine stand and you cant see past 60-70 yards anywhere)

I wish they never discontinued the product line. But for now, Ruger does off their American Ranch in 7.62x39mm. Technically, if you are an Eastern woodland whitetail hunter and your shots are well within 100 yards typically, that's really all you really need. I definitely agree with your assessment. Also, 7.62x39mm is still comparatively inexpensive to shoot a young hunter and can get plenty of practice with it, grow with it develope their marksmanship skills and become confident.
