This Episode was highly requested, as so we are gonna see with our eyes the new Meta Quest 3 vs its probably biggest competitor, the PICO 4
Is it time to upgrade or change? Is it worth the jump?
Well, let's discover it in this video!

They were really so very similar that I actually couldn't say which one had better visuals. But for me... I bought the Quest 3 (and love it) over the Pico 4 because the Pico doesn't support my IPD of 60. As I understand, the settings on the PICO 4 goes down to 58 but the lenses stop moving at 62. That wouldn't work for me.

I miss essential information in your comparisons - this is - connection method - cable/wifi? program - pico or VD? oculus link, airlink or VD? What bitrate, what resolution? At a time when we can connect in different ways and each provides a different experience, this is essential information. Especially since the VD pico can do much more than the org soft pico

  • @mrdummy_nl
    @mrdummy_nl 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +56

I own both and i can say:
    - Pico4 is much balanced on your head!
    - Tracking is better on Pico4 (still halo rings, way less errors and quicker), Q3 is still "beta" in tracking with small chance for some fails or dropouts.
    - Pico4 may older, price is much lower and overall still good headset.
    - Pico4 is also less power hungry, last longer on batteries.
You will go for Quest 3:
    - if your want try out AR side
    - if you hate halo rings and want lightweight controllers
    - if you have many quest games in store
    - more future proof side
For PCVR use, both are good (Q3 can do a bit more with new gen cpu) so no shame to get Pico 4. Don't forget buy better facial interface from AMVR and it's comfy headset.
Quest 2 is also not bad, but sweet spot is much smaller and FOV is bit smaller. That is only difference. IPD setting on Q2 is also limited. But Q2 is also not bad one because you can get it much cheaper on used markets. Good for the starters with low budget.

i also own both and i completely switched to Quest 3 because of the better displays and visuals as well as better ASW for PCVR, which i use in some games. But the Pico 4 is by far the most comfortable headset if you are using the AMVR facial interface. Even with the AMVR for Quest 3 and additional modding it's not that comfortable as the Pico 4.

Not to forget the binocular overlap. Pico 4 has nearly 100% bin. overlap, Quest 3 max. 70%. That means a clearly better stereoscopic (3D) sight with the Pico. But that it's not the theme of this type of videos, of course. The far more warmer picture of the Pico makes it more pleasant for Videos and Movies. All other content the Quest 3 shows better. Sadly the comfort of Quest 3, even with battery elite strap, is way behind the Pico 4. This means better balance and wider gasket due to the larger lenses.

I have done everything to make the Pico4 more comfortable, and even on my 3rd 3rd-party accessory, while much better, I don't find it great. I'm pretty sure I can get far better choices for 3rd party accessories for the Quest 3 in due time, so I'm hoping it will be more comfortable. Besides, my Pico4 lenses fog up the first 10 minutes or so, and are fairly picky about how you place the headset to get a sharp image in my view. I don't like the optics, you get a weird wobbly effect if you scan around the picture. (Try looking around at the mountains in the pico4 "menu" environment.). Glare is also a pretty major issue in my book. That said, when in the right game where it is not too dark or too bright, my headset has warmed up, it does offer a very detailed and clear picture.

Games though are better on the Q3, but I only play standalone games. Added: I have an aftermarket face/gasket cover, since the one on the P4 sucks. Great video Tyriel, I've been looking forward to this! I bought the Pico 4 when it released because I was interested in the new lenses compared to my Q2. I quickly sold my Q2 and used my Pico 4 as my main driver, and when the Q3 was announced I quickly realised PCVR gaming would be more or less the same on both headsets. This video shows it perfectly. A few bumps up in most areas, but not enough to justify an "upgrade" if you're only playing PCVR.
Also, I think it's amazing how far the tech has come in so few years. I remember watching the Assetto Corsa comparison where the cars would quickly become blurs or blobs of pixels in the distance. Now you can actually see them well. Either way you look at it, both headsets are great. And the Pico 4 is a steal for what you get, and especially what you get out of the box.

I personally had the opportunity to try 2 units of quest 3 and I hate that they seemed like a mediocre headset for the price at which it is sold, the overlap is terrible, the diagonal fov is terrible, they have light pollution and mura the same as in pico 4 and I even noticed the lenses of my pico 4 were sharper at the sides of lenses, I can say that quest 3 is not a headset that I would recommend if your use case is pcvr, there is pico 4 that provides you with better things at a visual level such as the overlap, which is practically a perfect oval without deformations and they have a wider fov vertically and diagonally and it is quite noticeable

With the MQ2, I was annoyed at how I cant turn off the headset audio positioning from invading/over-riding my PC's audio settings when using a 5.1 channel external speakers system when using AMS2 for sim-racing. I am holding back for a less invasive headset/software combination that doesn't take over my preferred PC audio settings. Software/drivers implementation is a big factor for me deciding which headset is suitable with PC VR.

TO ALL: Please help me understand! - For Sim Racing PCVR only - I love my HPG2 but looking for the next headset. will I get better performance, clarity, battery life, etc. If I used a wire connection instead of streaming?
Here are my thoughts - Im concerned about the limitations of streaming. I don't care much about wireless, but I care about battery life, as well as how hard will it be to replace the battery in the Q3 vs. P4 (Q2 battery replacement is a PITA). I care about the balanced weight the P4 brings to the table, but the 120hz from the Q3 is a big deal. Thanks

I've owned a few Cv1's, 2 quest 1s and a rift s and just got the pico 4 and the image quality blew me away when I first put the headset on, the built in fan to cool the headset is a must, they have them in all fpv headsets but never seen them in VR before which is weird. Like all standalone VR headsets the image clarity is never that good even with the pico 4 having 2160x2160 a lot of games are still a little fuzzy but for PCVR I tried rec room on the headset and rec room on steam and PCVR wins as always... But I would highly recommend the pico 4 over any similar meta quest product

The PICO 4 looks equally as well as the Q3, to me. Looking at the through the lens comparisons, I noticed that there are different angles each shot or recording, which even with the slightest variations can change the look, and quality a lot, so as I watch what I began to look for was not so much how much better one was than the other, but instead, is the quality of what I'm shown of the PICO, worth the money (would I buy it for $500.00?!)!? The answer is yes, for sure. So far, to me it seems to be the smartest purchase option. But,... A few questions remain,...
Looking to get an PICO 4 in the USA. Anyone have any problems with shipping and receiving the PICO 4 from UK, to the USA? Also was there any issues with power plug adapter conversion, from UK to USA standards?
    Thanks in advance.

Funny thing, I returned my Quest 3 because of a couple fundamental issues. Lack of cameras on top of the HMD means less over-head controller tracking which I actually need for dancing. It also means the headset and controllers lose tracking more often because it's not using the ceiling as a tracking surface and sees less light despite my room being brightly lit. However, the Pico 4 seems to have the right fundamentals to be a better and more reliable VR headset by combining the best of the Quest 2 and Quest 3.

Pico 4 is half the price, its hard to argue if your solely using PCVR and 3D Stereoscopic gaming, any game these days can be turned into 3D and viewed on Steam big cinema experience, its awesome, think nVidia 3D Vision, but far more immersive.
Non the less, Quest 3 can do all of this, and more but you are also locked into Meta and you need Meta account, its also twice as expensive even on the used market, its a hard buy if all you do is sit on your PC to play stuff.

I have the Pico4 and Quest 3, I like my Pico4 better than my Quest 2 but like my Quest 3 better than my Pico4, the optics in the Q3 are unreal, edge to edge clarity but I get binocular overlap when looking to the extreme sides of the display with my eyes in the Q3, I don't get that in the Pico4 but do get blur at the outer edge of the optics. Agreed, the extra grunt of the XR2 Gen2 of the Q3 makes it work so much better for PCVR, much less noticeable compression than the Pico4 or Q2.
The other thing I really like about the Pico4 is the OS, more like a plain jane Android OS with all the menu features, not stuck using a closed OS like meta, meta is a pain in the butt with that BS phone app to do certain functions to the Quest HMDs, like time change (Had to do this with my Wife's Q2, time was messed up) and even a factory reset needs the phone app, the Pico4 has all this in the HMD's menus. Pico does have a phone app but you don't need to use it to setup your Pico4 or to do other crucial functions, meta just likes making life as complicated and annoying as possible.

@@emrah7921 Regarding your graphics card, I can tell you that it will be completely sufficient for the absolute majority of VR games. Since the majority of VR games are almost exclusively developed for standalone headsets, the PC requirements are relatively low. Of course, if you want to play regular PC games with VR mods (UEVR, Luke Ross, etc.), then this could be a tight squeeze for newer titles. My recommendation would be if you only want to play VR on PC. Newer titles that are modded and so on. Then it might make more sense to invest in a new graphics card and buy a cheaper VR headset (Pico 4) first..
In principle, however, I would definitely recommend the Quest 3, as it is much more future-proof both technically and in terms of support! In the meantime, for example, there are many exclusive titles for the Quest that aren't even coming out on PC. In the long term, it could be that you can simply skip the PC and enjoy the games directly on the glasses.
So if you're faced with the decision to buy and can afford the higher purchase price, the Q3 is definitely the way to go.

I watched this video on a 85 inch color calibrated tv. I was expecting a bigger difference in favor of the quest 3. Heard so much about the lenses. But on some of these tests the Pico 4 seemed better. And actually the screen door seems more noticeable on the Quest 3.
Btw - the white balance/color balance on the Quest 3was way too cold/blue!
Was this because of different camera settings when you were filming, Tyriel?
In Norway the Pico 4 is half the price of the Quest. So for PCVR no reason to go for Quest 3 if this video is correct.

Nice comparison, thank for sharing this mate. I don't have a Pico 4 because they still do not ship to Australia. For PCVR it looks to me that while the Q3 fairs a little better due to its better screens/lens/chip, the Pico 4 still seems to do a very good job. So, maybe not a must-have upgrade for Pico 4 PCVR users imho.
I do have a Q3 with Elite battery strap (fortunately one of the good ones) and I'm loving this headset, mainly for standalone VR/MR, but also as a backup to my QPro/rtx4090 for PCVR. Pico 4 wins big on blacks and contrast in dark scenes. abe game at the end black on white and also elite dangerous starry sky shows MUCH denser black on p4 + much higher contrast on the orange on black display. Quest 3 is brighter for sure but also over tinted in blue which can be seen both in whites and blacks (and Pico slightly on green and red). Checked on LG oled in dark room so its not my TV :)
Would love to see comparison on Pico neo 3 link on DP vs quest 3. PN3L is MUCH brighter than P4 and of course and more details on cable (even if resolution is lower). It's actually because of the camera shuttering speed, unfortunately every screen reacts differently to the camera, but motion in reality it's actually the same

@@Tyrielwood Maybe you should set it manually to the same value to have better comparison ? Because when I saw this, I though the Pico 4 have better brightness at first (in general lower brightness means lower shutter speed)
Maybe screen refresh was causing problems on video but yeah there is a massive difference between the two, like 1/10 and 1/60, and lower shutters speed means more light captured so it can affect the image in different ways

The white balance on my Pico 4 is the only thing I dislike about it. It's mostly only noticeable in MS Flight Sim with a lot of vegetation.

I just got the Quest 3. Maybe I'm just really picky but I still have trouble getting my image clear. I feel TH-camrs have really over hyped IQ on it. Not to mention being very uncomfortable with it on my head. It's heavier than quest 2 to a fault. Maybe I'm just adjusting to VR after not using my Quest 2 in almost 2 years. I guess I just expected almost flat monitor clarity with new VR headsets and what I'm seeing is far from it. Still very cool and immersive as hell, but to my eye there's still something not satisfying about the image quality. It's entirely possible I need to tinker with some more settings but it's all max resolution. Overall for me it's still a tinker toy to take a break from flat screen gaming but nothing I'd consider a serious gaming device. Unless you like image quality that looks like it's been smeared with Vaseline.

Colour volume and colour temp looks better and more natural on the Pico. Also, white looks more naturally white.

To me Elite Dangerous looked better on Pico 4 but much smaller text is readable in Quest 3. So it appears Quest 3 is sharper but also sometimes Pico's text looks better (large text), so idk what is better. Bowth are good for shure.

Quest 3 for £479 or Pico 4 for £259? Would appreciate your advice - visual clarity is more important for me than MR. Appreciate Quest will be better but is it worth almost double the price? Thanks.

For a headset that is ~200 less, a year older, than the overhyped Quest3 and you don't need to buy an extra 'Elite Strap' to use it, it's not bad. Not to forget the Q3 128GB-version is a joke when more games come with higher res. textures than the mostly low res Q2-games yet. There is no 256GB version for the Q3, because Zuck wants to make gross revenue with an expensive 512GB version.
Not a big draw with the Q3, sadly. Too bad that the Bytedance Chinese clever-CEOs flunked the US congress 'Tiktok'-hearing, so Pico could not made it to US and has too low sold rates because of that, even more with their bad crisis management now.

For standalone go Quest 3, especially if you already own games from Meta Store. (Also if you have the budget)
For PCVR, Pico 4 is a great headset that will not let you down and will also spare quite some bucks on your wallet. You don't have to add much more accessories to make it more comfortable (other than maybe a face gasket), and the battery is just waaaay more efficient than Q3. The downsides are... well... it's hard to buy and import, not every standalone content is there, or it takes longer for devs to optimize it / troubleshooting it or even release it. It might not be that future proof, sadly. It was a HMD way ahead of its time, but now with Q3 the market shares are taken by Meta by a storm, even as I said previously, the P4 is a great headset overall.

It's pretty luck based right now. People have complained about many things on the quest 3 that they say are vastly different than a quest 3 they returned due to another issue.

Try to find a Quest 3 to try. I don't notice it in the games and apps I play. It has to be a static, bright image and I have to pause to see anything. The Q3's software and ecosystem are fantastic too.

I really can't see the screen door at all on the Q3. I have prescription lens fitted but for me the Q3 is now good enough to work in VR. I have had to fiddle a bit to get the comfort right though.
