Mate that is shocking but glad it worked out in the end for you. I recently purchased a hard to find ps1 game from them, not expensive but it turned up in one of those cardboard envelopes! Amazingly it survived and was actually in almost mint condition! Just wish they would give staff more training considering how retro gaming has moved on. Love ya videos mate keep up the great work ❤
You're a better man than I mate. I would have lost it. I love r type 3, I had it as a teenager, and managed to pick up a a really nice copy maybe 10 years ago. It was still kind of expensive then and still hard to find complete (I'm in Australia). What is the most infuriating part of your situation is that there are so few copies left in decent condition. I know things can't last forever, but a retailer that focuses on retro games should do so much better. Anyway, it's hard to stay angry when your still smiling haha. Glad you got a decent discount.

Hey mate a great episode, this has definitely happened to me several times with Amazon, they sent a ghostbusters Playmobil ecto-1A which is a boxed 📦 item in a large envelope I had the reaction when I opened as the whole 📦 was crumpled and destroyed but in saying that I contacted Amazon and they agreed to refund me the $125AUD I spent on it and said I could keep so win win situation, but as collectors of vintage things it can always be heartbreaking 💔 when this happens, but great to see Cex came through with helping out and I’m looking forward to seeing how the box restoration goes 😎👍🏻

Mate, I am so glad to hear that there has been a positive outcome out of a crap situation! As you say, even if someone isn't a collector and it is just a job, surely the value of the item would mean it would come better packaged for transit! I've had £20 purchases arrive more securely 😂

Always used to hope a R-Type would get released on Mega Drive, but ye lucky SNES owners always got the goods.
Regarding CEX, I got a Ps1 mouse from them last week, listed as official but when it arrived it was a third party job. I'll allow them though because I've bought a few Mega Drive games that were listed as unboxed, but amazingly came boxed. Like you say, it's a lottery.
Glad you got a decent resolution on this in the end. The other week I purchased a loose cart of Dragon's Lair on SNES for £6 and it came nicely protected and packaged in a box. This week I purchased Batman Return of The Joker on the NES for £45, also loose cart only, however this came with a little bit of secondhand bubble wrap that barely covered it and then sent in an envelope. Luckily a cart is obviously a lot more sturdy than cardboard and it arrived in great condition and I was really happy with it. But where is the consistency? I have been waiting for it to be in stock for months and would have been gutted if it had been cracked in the post.
What a Story... A collector like you deserves a good ending. I bought this game many years back at a German Retro Fair in mint condition for around 60€. I am so glad i bought many expensive Games years ago. The prices are getting insane. The Game is fantastic! Love it! Looking forward to the vlog as always. It surprising what 2 pieces of plain white a4, a flat surface and a non steam iron can do!
when you iron a nintendo box made flat between the two a4 sheets it flattens them and also re-stiffens the card board - would work wonders with this one, but not worth keeping at that price without a manual!

I have never related more with a video topic than this. Sadly, this type of idiocy has happened multiple times to me; especially from eBay. I've got burnt so many times by bad packaging, that I always message the seller immediately after purchasing something to request a well-packaged cardboard box.
Happy CEX did the right thing and refunded you properly. Best case scenario after the fact.
Tell me about it! I buy a lot from vinted and eBay. Sometimes, I can't believe that someone thinks wrapping an item in a bag for life is sufficient packaging... I'm like you now. Whenever I buy something, especially if its in a cardboard box, I ask them to send it within another box and protected.

Gutted for you but glad of the outcome. Looking at the condition you got it in, if you tried to trade that in to CeX they absolutely would have told you its unboxed condition. Much respect for the hands being held up, something that I've experienced CeX do a few times now thanks to my local being one that focuses on quality of older games too

that damage is heartbreaking. it probably had a little damage when left the store but deffinately obtained more damage with that shockingly bad packaging! , if i sell a game even if its a £5 game ill make sure i package it with plenty of bubble wrap!

It may be worthwhile getting your son the Super Retrocade from Retro-bit. It has a few desirable games like R Type 3, Demon's Crest and Final Fight 3 where he can play the games while your games can stay in display.
A recent purchase I had from cex went wrong for me. I went on a day out and picked up a game. A very cheap one so I didn't check the disc. Getting home I looked inside and it had the wrong game. As it was bought in store i was thinking I have 2 days to get it back and there is no way for me to get to one in that time frame. So I contacted them via email and I cant say how helpful they were. They didn't ask for the wrong disc back they just sent out the correct one free of charge. I was convinced I was just gonna be told to suck it up but was pleasantly surprised. I agree they do some baffling things from time to time but overall the experience is a majority positive one.
I just recently recieved an order of empty boxes without the items inside them 🤣 I was straight onto them by email. In the meantime I had an email for trust pilot to rate my experience and I lashed CEX out of it 🤣 I wouldn't normally but I saw red as its over ten times Ive had problems with them. Long story short a senior advisor got in touch with me and now 2 weeks later the missing items have been found and are being sent to me. I'll adjust my review now as in fairness to them they have come through, but only after I get the items and make sure they aren't in bits now.
It’s pretty basic stuff. Surely as a CEX employee you recognise the value of Nintendo cardboard and it’s condition to those who buy it. Just box it up,simple. Anyway, looking forward to Sundays vlog to see how you rescue it. Also fairplay to them for letting you have it for the unboxed price. There is a really good copy on eBay atm in the UK but it’s £230 which is a pretty Penny.
I've had worse off ebay, purchased a megadrive game, stuck it in the console and nothing, the guy then tries to fob me off blaming my console. But unfortunately for him I have 3 megadrives. I got a refund but I was frustrated because I wanted the game. Awesome channel and top content by the way
Feel your pain here. Quality game. I had a tonne of snes stuff as part of my collection but had to sell 2/3 of my collection after my divorce. I had paid pennies for pretty much all my SNES games including this one. The firemen. Hagane. Super turrican 2 etc etc. Nowadays I fill that void with a hacked SNES mini. Glad you got a good resolution. Definitely a fair outcome.
£50, superb price for cart and box and a nice gesture from CEX for their error. Fix up that box and get a manual. Job done.

That's mental. Absolute disappointment! When you order a cheap game or even a small item and it comes in those big boxes filled and protected with that paper fluff stuff! Then an expensive game (in Nintendo cardboard!!) Sent in a thin cardboard envelope! But in the end.... nice one!😅 never heard of CeX doing their bit to please the customer like that! Good for them now since they are in our public TH-cam eye thru channels like yours 😀 I ordered pokemon sapphire a while ago. It came massively protected!! Despite the box being creased and taped up a bit 😢😢

At least it was a happy(ish) ending mate, you've got a rare game at a great price. I've seen a lot worse boxes repaired using simple techniques and a bit of patience, might make a decent bit of content if you go for it 👍
I believe CEX take photos of goods prior to mailing out so the condition would be able to be compared. I doubt they'd share the original pictures though. Great outcome in the end though 👍
Yes I am sure they would of done that prior to refunding. It was clearly damaged in transit, and I think they will know its unlikely someone would be happy with it in its current condition at boxed price. Thanks for taking g the time to watch WW, appreciate it 🙏
Looks like old wear and tear. Probably why the staff just chucked it in an envelope. I guess they just thought it was a cheap old game.
Thats bad but at least you sorted this out and the store concerned has raised this with the staff concerned. Hopefully you'll be able to fix the cardboard or find a replacement box in better condition.

Happy it worked out for you in the end. Cex should really be selling games unboxed when the box is in such poor condition and missing a manual at this price especially. They won’t accept a console as boxed if one piece of the inlay is missing but are far more lax in standards when it comes to the games.

I've found a YT video in the past, of a guy repairing the cardboard on some Amiga games having similar damage and he did a masterful job. If I find it again, I'll link it in a reply to this.

It’s annoying when you have Been wanting something for so long and you end up being disappointed with it. Glad you got a good outcome tho. I haven’t bought anything from cex online for almost a year now reason being I brought a game off the app and they just sent a box with loads of bubble wrap in. There was not case no manual no disc nothing just the delivery box and bubble wrap you couldn’t even fit a case inside the box they sent me. So emailed then they got it sorted told me the game is back online now. When I went to buy it they upped the price to 90 when the price was 60 when I brought it. So I had to take my money back and find one on eBay which I did.
Shocking I’ve had £10 games packaged better than that. I’ve had similar on eBay paid big me money for a game only for it to turn up is poorly packaged. I agree with u item over say £40 quid they go in a big. Personally I should be part of the CEX interview ……can you package this expensive retro game for me!!

Sick of Cex putting cardboard games in envelopes. I think it boils down to the franchises trying to keep costs down. No thought goes into the packaging. Great bloody game there tho 👌and great result in the end.
Such a shame about the packaging, I've had my fair share of bad cex experiences when ordering online. Bought Ranger X on the Megadrive for £60 and I never received it and it took over 2 weeks to get a refund. Great conclusion though, it's a win win for sure. They should definitely be more careful with their packaging though as the way I see it, they're the leading retro game store in the UK

I was in a branch in the SW the other week.a guy came in with a bag of games 50 or so,which were absolute tat.the guy behind the counter didn't even open them up,just scanned them in like an aldi checkout,settled up and off he went 🙄😔
I remember complaining last year to CEX about twice sending me the wrong game and also sending me several Sega Games that were pretty badly damaged on the cases. I'm absolutely certain they didn't like my complaining so they blocked my WiFi IP address from connecting to their website as my WiFi suddenly couldn't connect to their website yet using data outside my house or someone else's WiFi worked fine. Basically I had to complain about that too and show picture proof and wouldn't you know it within hours later my WiFi could suddenly connect again. My advice would be to anyone DONT buy an expensive game from them. You just don't know which store is going to send the game and believe me when I say some of them take in any game without checking them properly for damage and some of them can't be bothered to pack them properly and safely. Oh yeah and of course 90% of the times the game you purchase don't have the manual with them.

That’s terrible and shocking that a store did that, the resolution in the end is a pretty good deal though, hopefully you find a manual…and I thought they tried to do me dirty earlier today, platinum disk and no manual in standard box for a £6 game 😂 I asked them kindly to get another disk and they did so, so happy days.
They will get a reputation for fixing issues at this rate 😅
That's brutal, I'd never be keeping that! It's gutting to receive a game in that condition but at the end of the day their carelessness is costing them money with things like this.

This is so bad, especially given my last cex order - I bought batman returns for the game gear cart only - I think it was £6 or £7 total and it came in a shoe size box full of packing - even after emptying the box out I struggled to find the cart!!

With so much experience of handling games they should know better when shipping them out. Especially given how much they are charging for them 🤦🏻♂️. It’s a shame so many games have been ruined in the past by not packing them properly for shipping

Yeah boxed as standard for games of a certain value / fragility.
I would say by the state of the box regardless of any potential damage in transit and no manual you wouldn’t have kept it anyway 🤷♂️. Yeah it’s criminal they send cardboard in envelopes but it won’t be the first or last time either.
If you have watched my channel previously, I have often kept games that people were suprised by as I take each in an individual basis, based on how much CEX sell if for against eBay prices etc... had this been in good condition with no manual I would of likely kept it as CEX allows me to use vouchers. But ultimately I think the right decision was reached by CEX to ensure the best outcome for their customer following their mistake and subsequent complaint. Thanks for watching Ian appreciate it 🙏
That is like quarter of my ps1 collection arrives in from cex. You win some you lose some. Its common sense to ship anything over 50 pounds in the box but no padded envelope it is.... It is extra heartbreaking when it happens to some rare game like this. Similar thing happened to my with twisted metal world tour on ps1, it came in in envelope, case cracked to sh!t, well at least it is one of kind copy now n superglue got some use.

One thing that CEX needs to do is tighten up it's High-cost retro policy. I get that stores are franchises but at the same time I have seen £100 games in 'reprint' covers or indeed expensive games sent out in awful packaging.

I am a resident evil collector and for the life of me used cex for umbrella chronicles for the gun because there wasn’t one on eBay and did it not just come unboxed it was missing missing more bits than you would believe it’s a joke a get your pain am done with em

The point is though, its a disgrace that such a high value game was not sent in a box in the first place, those thick paper sleeves are not even suitable for a dvd cased game, never mind retro cardboard
All retro should be sent in boxes in my opinion, you can have great wins and you have to expect some losses, but incompetence like that packaging is inexcusable 👍✌️

Looks like water damage personally , I doubt if it was in transit but it does sicken me when companies who should know better ship like this. It’s not excusable overall though
It was certainly not mint when it was sent but a lot of the damage was caused by the lack of packaging... it was obvious as soon as I opened the envelope with the crushing etc, even the inner tray had been crushed....

This is disappointing to see especially to a rarer game. I had cex send me a boxed banjo tooie in a bubble mailer once and some how it arrived in good condition, probably due to being sent with Royal mail. Then on the other hand I've received boxed games that are absolutely battered but are so well protected with packaging, all depends on the store I suppose.
Yeah, things with CEX differ drastically store to store, thankfully my local store is fantastic and strive for the best customer satisfaction

It's just common sense, something that is £140 should be posted in a cardboard box with bubble wrap/padding.
What a joke that is mate, I've yet to buy anything from CEX but I did get sent the cardboard dvd of bloodsport from eBay that was put in a paper envelope, it was raining that day so it got ruined, can't understand how some people/companies pack stuff.
