- Our snowmobile go kart is close to completion! In today's episode we finish our custom go kart front brake setup, tune the Kawasaki 440cc carburetor, and take the Murray Kilowatt (now the Murray Megawatt) on a rip! We still have issues with the belt slipping, but when it hooks up, this poor man's cross kart HAULS THE MAIL!

Anything happening with the 670cc 2 stroke?
It's Way too high geared.. That's why it's slipping. I have a 500cc rotax; I ended up adding a second jack shaft just to get the gearing right. We were running 3 or 4 to 1 --- and now it's closer to 9 to 1, and still a little high geared. I clocked it at 74mph in one city block with a gps phone.. lol. and that was with two people in it.... You need to at least double your gearing ratio, or even more. Right now, it would likely do 135 mph if you had a long enough paved straight away.

Guys.. i dont know if my previous comments where read but PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, do a 1:1 gearing on the chain, the CVT will take care of the "gearing" necessary! Or keep driving that poor enginge like there is a 90 degree downhill race.

When you pull everything to weld out and paint the frame I recommend putting a new main seal in the motor. Every 2 stroke I have had die was because of the main. If you notice a random performance improvement stop and check it they lean out run like a raped ape for a couple mins then melt down.
If they are ole its never a bad thing to replace Rotax some have center seals which require a crank separation thats a Major Job...

Spray starting fluid near the seal to check for a vacuum leak.
On any old bike I got ,I always changed the magneto side one ,it's dry and has a hard life.
Usually the other side is in oil and "should" be ok.
Glad I replaced the last one ,after I removed it and folded the lip in, it had cracks about .100 deep.
If it excessively smokes , the clutch side one is toast and it's sucking gear oil in.
Usually you can get lucky and just do the magneto side in chassis too.
@@theupscriber65 many require you pull the flywheel/drive gear to get access to try and spray on. Then you couldn't run it and are already at the seal

Clutching is huge with a snowmobile engine. Clutching is a fine art. It will make you think your engine isn't running right. It sounds like your either your secondary is set up to weak and opening way to soon or you need heavier weights in the primary. That motor with the right clutch setup should push that thing to 80 plus and still pull the front tires off from a standstill. Don't give up this thing has so much potential! Oh and check those crank seals before you end up with a nice penny sized hole in your piston. Really sucks to have a ten dollar seal cause hundreds in damage. Don't ask how I know lol
i doubt the brakes are that bias adjustable with this setup, that central pivot will auto balance. if one master cylinder is harder than the other, the force will be equalized, no matter how much you adjust it with the bolts. in the bias box on my car the adjustment essentially moves that pivot point left or right which changes how much force goes to each side. the simplest form is a single master cylinder and then an inline restrictor to the rear so you can adjust it that way (basically a line lock so you can do burnouts too lol).
glad you changed the rear shock angles at the end too. that should make it much more planted at the rear. keep at it guys 👍
I had a very similar issue with my set up, I installed a jack shaft because I thought it was the gearing, turns out after Comet generously helped me with weights and springs it was a combination of the drive and driven pulley set up

That’s cvt for ya. Different spring setup will pute more or less pressure on the belt. Causing it to slip or to over work. Also looks like belt is loose, which would cause the engagement point to be too high on the primary, and that could seem like gearing is too tall. So much to check
One of the main reasons it was running poorly, is snowmobiles have restrictive air boxes from the factory as too keep water out of them, and some don't even use filters, so they keep it water tight which means they usually breathe through a hole on the top some where. So it was probably on the factory tune, and when y'all put on that open element filter it began breathing freely and leaned out... just something to keep in mind. Love the build!

This thing is awesome, although i really think the rear shocks should be mounted more vertically. you have a real inverse-progressive spring rate going on, which is why the back end is so bouncy.

When you say it pulls and then slips again, that may be when the secondary clutch opens up. Or, I guess you guys would call it a driven clutch? When you get the new belt maybe point a GoPro at the clutches and see what exactly is going on and you could really fine tune it. When guys drag race snowmobiles they spend a lot of time on clutch tuning.

This is the tech quote of the day. Lots of us have a lot of experience with CVT tuning, and if we can SEE both ends of the CVT with live audio and a speed reference (like the ground), we can give sound CVT tuning advice.
All we see right now is a belt which is WAY too long. When the belt is too long, all your low-speed high torque gearing is wasted tensioning the belt. You are starting in second gear.
It is critical for the kart to power away to at least 5 mph with the belt still deep in the front pulley. If geared properly you will accelerate through the engines powerband, and only once the engine is up on the pipe will the CVT then throw you forward once again without much RPM change. After the CVT has fully completed it's gearing change you should have a little more RPM gain before reaching top speed.
Getting the CVT to go through the entire ratio change while the engine is on the pipe making power takes time and experimenting but has MAJOR payoffs!
Also CVT's can be easily governed by the length of the spacers at each end, make sure the belt goes from the bottom to the top at both ends.
Note: When I said "deep in the front pulley" that was wrong because the engine is behind the secondary pulley, my bad. Please read the comment I am about to make for all the CVT facts.

It's NOT the gearing, well it IS but it's because of the belt. That belt is engaging halfway up the clutch sheave, it's basically like trying to take off in 3rd gear. It needs an actual snowmobile belt, they are like an inch wide. The correct size belt will be wide enough to be on the outside of the secondary clutch and almost touching the sides of the primary. That thing should be ripping the rear tires loose and flying.
You need to take that wonderful peace of creation to the next mini mayhem in fall or whenever its next!! I would really like to see that there!

I never would have thought about the bleeding issue. Good tip. I expect people who fab up braking systems very often figure this out pretty quickly. Moving the master makes good sense, who wants to flip their kart up on its nose or tail to bleed brakes? :-)
On the jet drill steps. The flow area increases exponentially with diameter, that is why the diameter increments are not equal. You know, the old pi r not square, pi are round equation.

Now you've got one coming on first with less throw and one coming on later with more throw, PLUS constantly changing bias through the entire pedal travel.
Lucky it doesn't really matter.

Attention CVT tuners!
This video provides exactly three (3) seconds of valuable visual CVT information starting at 20:36. Audio CVT information is directly affected by the issues in these three seconds so we will get to that later.
I will refer to the engine pulley as the drive pulley and the other pulley as the driven pulley.
With the vehicle at rest engine off the belt should ride snug in the very bottom of the drive pulley and travel straight back to the very top of the driven pulley. The drive pulley has a free spinning flat bushing in the bottom so the belt can stay still once the engine is started. Immediately off idle the weights in the drive pulley will begin to squeeze the belt and it will turn, still at the bottom of the drive pulley.
At 20:36 you can see the belt flopping in the wind, and it takes half of the drive (primary) travel to tension the belt which should have had tension before you even got in the kart.
This has effectively waisted first gear, and high gear since the belt will never pull deep down into the driven pully.
Lesson #1 A shorter belt will provide a tree-climbing first gear you don't have yet, SO DON'T CHANGE THE FINAL DRIVE RATIO YET!
Lesson #2 With the belt deep in the drive pulley the drive pulley springs fighting against the driven pulley main spring should keep the CVT in 1st gear while the engine accelerates enough to produce maximum torque (you will feel it come "up on the pipe" and push you back into your seat). Slipping of the driven clutch will help, but the driven clutch should fully engage quickly. The main spring in the driven clutch is the easy way to keep you in first gear longer.
Lesson#3 this is when engine RPM is high enough to force the drive pulley tight against the belt and squeeze it up the ramp. This requires a lot of power because the driven pully main spring is trying to keep it in first gear, but the bad ass 2-stroke is now singing in the RPM power band and as the belt starts banging gears 2nd, 3rd, 4th, it won't slip because you and the kart are light and roll easy. It should feel like the acceleration from a wicked roller coaster.
Lesson #4 Don't confuse the clutch springs in the driven pulley (clutch) with the main spring in the driven pulley. They have very different jobs.
Lesson #5 Since I don't actually know if the drive pully is a spring-loaded set of tapered weights or a set of rollers working against a variator ramp, (variator's have no spring in the drive side), it really does not matter, but variators give you many more tuning options, and you need to do more testing, so you don't spend a fortune on parts that don't work.
Lesson #6 How do you get the belt on if it is so tight? YOU CAN'T! To install the correct size belt, you squeeze the driven pulley main spring and force the belt to the bottom, then REMOVE the drive pulley or move the entire engine to get it on!
Test the CVT carefully with the rear tires off the ground and be amazed when you get full travel of the CVT.
Warning: Tire explosions are dangerous, stay clear of the tires at high RPM.
If anyone wants to argue or correct me...bring it on! As long as we get the full travel out of this CVT I'll accept all the help I can get.

@@gowerski Actually the main spring in the driven pulley is about 4 inches in diameter, and has 3 or four coils, and the clutch springs in the driven pulley (usually 3) are about 1/4-inch diameter X 1 inch long and hold the clutch shoes away from the drum.

Coming from Polaris ATV;s clean your sheeves with 0000 steel wool, and the spring in the Drive part can make a huge difference in the how the clutch locks up to 1 to 1. Also CVT does not like light throttle or going slow it heats the belt up quick, its why the ATV and SXS have high and low gearing to keep the speed up in the clutch box, a scoop to catch air and a exit for the heat will help keep it cool.

Using a big syringe to inject fill the whole system from the bleeder screw always works for me on a stubborn weird setup
I've had good luck with a tool I saw on "Trucks" called a reverse bleeder. It forces air out to the master cylinder from the bottom up. You know, the way air "wants" to go.

The brake tip is super helpful for me and gonna have to try it out, had a kart for almost a year now that hasn't had very good brakes
I'm late I was a snowmobile mechanic for over 35 years. Those kawasaki engines used Tillotson carbs the minkuni would only run good going uphill due to the intake to carb angle. It would run better if you got the carb close to level. Just my 2 cents lol.
Honestly that bigger axle is going to be a god send, it'll keep you much more stable since it sits high

We used to throw the pipe in a bonfire ,or sit there with a torch to clean it out.
Bonfire is more fun because it's usually you and your homies hanging out having a beer.

Make sure that you clean off the slag on the weld from the flux cored welder before you weld over top of it, that is why you are getting the poor weld.
keep your clutch sheaves clean! wash with rubbing alcohol first, then lightly sand with fine grit sandpaper or emery cloth and then wash it again after to remove any belt residue. Wipe the sides of the belt with the rubbing alcohol too remove any residue from it as well. Just make sure you don't sand any grooves in the sheaves, sand from the center out to the edge. You can also apply a small amount of grease to the inside hub of the helix.
many who use variator parts from scootter or centrifical clutches dont have a clue about those, some just buy new or use old but do not swap springs and weights what you must do at its workd best on that engine and top speed it hight and run fas also.

Yeah my vote is gearing as the first big thing that will make a huge improvement. I think engine crank seals will also make your lives way easier.
For tuning, look at the spark-plug. Out side ring shows low speed jet.. Inter electrode shows hi speed jet.
In other words: If outside ring is dark and wet.. low jet to big. If inside electrode is white, hi jet to lean.

Awe I had to pause it. You could have taken the front callipers off and lower them to the floor. Hydro lines would then pull tight and everything would be below master. Then fill it and reinstall them and you wouldn’t have to change a thing.
I've done several 440 karts with centrifical clutches and never had a problem
I mounted my hydraulic caliper on my kilowatt in the stock location just had to drill two new holes and use half inch spacers and it works perfect. I installed my front and rear hydraulic disc brakes without do nothing more than drilling 2 holes for the rear caliper and 4 more through the floorplan to hold the master cylinders and their brackets. The last thing was cutting down the original spindle tubes so that the new spindles would slide over them like the stock ones did. I literally accomplished the project in on day, definitely wore me out but got it done LOL.

It's a snowmobile clutch. If it's not pulling like you want it to then you may need to play with the weights and/or the ramps. Your gearing issue can be overcome with weights/ramps or both. You could clutch that thing to do wheelies all day but only hit 20mph without ever touching a sprocket or chain. I'm from northern Canada and we play with snowmobiles for about 6 months/year. I don't think gearing is what you wanna play with, you'll leave a lot on the table if you do that. There's also the secondary spring you could play with too. Stiffer would keep you in your lower range longer...

Went through 4 go power sports belts bought a worlds best belt and have had it for two years no issues no change except belt brand
Isn't it amazing how 420 just happened to be the right size for the jet LOL. Now it's smoking! Can't wait for the proper belt and gear ratio.
Thats a whole lot of axle overhang past the bearings.. I'd reccomend adding one more axle bearing on each side closer to the wheel hub so you don't end up bending the axle.

Weights and springs in primary and secondary clutches now! B4 changing gearing and burning up more belts. You control most of were it runs in rpm range and where belt rides and how fast it gets there thru weights and springs adjustment. That thing when you punch it should be rippin rooster tails and its not.
You all are doing an amazing job as always, just thought I'd mention that with the brake lines, it doesn't matter about hight, the fluid will push the air out when bleeding, love the channel and keep it up boiz 👍 cheers
incorrect, thats why they are "pockets" of air. riasing the master cylinder DOES solve this issue
The roll cage needs an upper cross bar on the top up front to strengthen the cage a bunch. I did it on mine

Think the gearing is a little too tall. You said it right when I typed this LOL. It has a lot larger pulleys so it doesn't need as much gearing to go fast! Those high reving 2 strokes are a whole different beast! That thing should be melting tires on something that light. Snowmobiles are heavy and they throw rooster tails 15 feet. ^_^ Dis gon b gud!

Two strokes are very sensitive to air and exhaust leaks. They are also very dependant on the muffler being the right shape, size, and cleared of obstructions. The reed can also become worn or cracked causing weird running issues.

This thing is going to fly once you get new belt. I had similar setup go-cart with 35hp two-stroke (don't remember brand) it went 60-70mph easy but with way crappier breaks. Very light with high horse power.
Richening the mixture is only a compensation for an air leak. Replace crank seals as a start.
That’s going to be fast one once you guys get the gearing down. Now if I were you guys, me being from southeastern Minnesota where we run sleds a lot and it’s colder here than where your at obviously 😂, that being a fan cooled engine, you guys should design some kind of air catching device and mount it to the fan inlet!! Can’t wait for the next episode!!
Also look into adding some weight to your primary clutch so it engages sooner and you aren't wasting so much engine and HP on nothing! On a sled they have to be turned up higher stalls to turn a huge hard track and bust through heavy snow under lots of load. On wheels you definitely don't need to have it engaging at 5K or higher to take off on the karts. Depending on who makes the clutch you either will need a spring and some weights or just a spring or just weights. This will also increase the life of your belt wearing as well! Just FYI here I've been there and done that with a sled engine in my golf cart.
The gear ⚙ ratios should be around 8 to 12:1 for ultimate performance on wheels! This also applies to sleds though they're not as steep of a ratio in the sleds. But for lower rpm's and driving the woods and trails you want it upwards of 10:1 plus! My gold cart is 12:1 and it tops out at almost 57mph @ 8500 rpm's on the flat roads which is much more than you want to be going on a Ezgo TXT. Cruising it does around 36 mph at roughly 4k rpm's with a stall speed of roughly 26-2800 now with the lighter spring in the primary and heavier in the secondary and stock weights on a comet sled/golf cart set-up. It makes it a good all around gearing for just about anything and you feel like you're stuck to the seat upon acceleration as well still. So hopefully this helps you guys out?

If you hold the master cylinder above the brake system and bench bleed it with it plugged up to the calipers you can reinstall it and it will work fine
