We're going to have a hill tier list soon. I can feel it.
"omg he's a hillosexual"
Medieval 2 when you get those maps that are basically a vertical line up and down, lmfao.
This one's way up near the top.
Hill map tier list when?
it was hillarious
The cover from behind a hill is called a 'defilade' position, and the fire you hit the reinforcing enemy with as they entered the battle is called 'enfilade fire.' Thus, you achieved the holy grail of fire positions that of 'enfilade fire from an defilade position.'
In the tradition of internet comment sections I'm here to tell you that 'enfilade' actually refers to the formation of the unit being fired upon relative to the unit doing the firing (if your guns can shoot along the length of the formation, it's 'en enfilade'). The term for the actual shooting bit is 'enfilad*ing* fire'
Tl;Dr - You got an insignificant detail wrong on the internet a crime punishable by smug comments for all eternity.
So the holy grail is just trench warfare?
I remember watching your Obama campaign years ago, and you once said that you had recorded everything before publishing the 1st part, and you wouldn't read any comment because of circumstances. Back in that time, I was so worried that you would drop TW altogether, and us TW fans won't be able to interact with you anymore. Thankfully, years later, you're still here, covering my most beloved TW game, with much better knowledge than before. And it seems like you do want to keep making FOTS content, judging from quite a few of FOTS being covered lately. So, in the off chance that you read this comment, thank you for everything Legend!!
slim chance bro, total war is Legend 's golden child
FOTS CAMPAGINAHWAGDGFF

Been watching him for years. His name is "legend of total war"
Wouldn't mind legend doing a review into manor lords and how it stacks up against total war when it drops.
yeah thanks to him Obama won the election
OOOOOBBBBBAAAAMMMAAA 🤣🤣🤣🤣
God the smoke, the cacophony of gunshots and cannonballs echoing off in the distance. It's such a spectacle you just can't get in warhammer
Warhammer gives a different spectacle tbh. All the smoke and debree alomg with magic and shit would be too cluttered.
@@shmekelfreckles8157Lol stop defending the abominations called warhammer games
you kinda can with either empire or vampire coast
I find the greatest joy in Warhammer is those clutch moments when you drop an overcast spell that just completely obliterates 1K+ dudes in one cast. Also all the big single units stomping around obliterating everything. Warhammer's also got literal nukes (clan Skryre Lol). But yeah, Shogun 2's just a different, more elegant and polished vibe. I still remember the first time I saw a ninja unit creep up on a melee unit and instantly assassinate like half of them with fatality animations. I was in god damn awe.
@@fareastslav as someone who played Vampire Coast, not you can't, not nuff smoke, not even naval battle ffs
Man professes his love for Mother Gaia’s lady lumps for half an hour.
She's got huge tracts of land, what's not to admire?
If there is one thing I miss from Shogun 2 and FOTS is the battle ending theme that plays during the loading screens, gives such good vibes after a good victory
Japanese music is awesome in general :)
An absolute banger the songs name is matsuri. Probably the best victory theme in all of Total war
@@aweiceman1650That still goes to the barbarian celebration theme in Rome
@@aweiceman1650shouri from the base game is also really good imo
Shogun 2 was the last game that Jeff van Dyke scored for CA. He did Rome and Medieval 2 as well. All with brilliant sound tracks.
I love how FotS is well-enough designed that it starts to reflect realistic tactics - overlapping fields of fire, defence-in-depth, reverse slope defences, enfilade and defilade, defeat-in-detail, etc., all of which we saw in these battles. Such a great game.
Using the slope as cover against indirect fire is called "reverse slope defilade". Works very well unless they can achieve a high angle of fall.
I was in the artillery. Things you learn!
Whyd you leave?
@@kristof6472he decided dying for Israel wasn't a good choice?
Strictly speaking, field artillery in this period is direct fire. Only mortars and drop howitzers could achieve that sort of attack onto a reverse slope, neither of which are present in FotS (excluding wooden cannons, which are awful except in sieges where they're merely mediocre). Interestingly both show up in Empire and Napoleon, where they serve as the principal tool to dislodge this sort of defensive position.
@@harveyohare dangerously based
@@harveyohare "Everything is political".
Holding a good defensive line and letting the enemy walk into your guns is the winning tactic 99% of the time in FOTS.
The faction names aren't the clan names in FoTS - they're the names of the domain, the name of the castle towns. So Satsuma is the name of the faction in FoTS, even though Satsuma province in FoTS is ruled by the same Shimazu clan that ruled there in the main-game era (you can see that the faction members in FoTS are named Shimazu)
*Obama is a place, not a family name.* Saying 'the Obama clan' is like saying 'the America clan' or 'the Australia clan'.
Similarly, there is no clan named Tosa at this time - Tosa is the name of the state, the province, the domain. It's ruled by the Yamauchi clan in this period.
RIP Chosokabe clan
long live the obama clan
Ummm achsually 🤓🤓
Well in America we do have the Klan
I know at least one obama family ruling. 😅
Shogun 2 was the most polished total war formula. Everything in this game works as intented.
routing conga lines are intended!?!?
I agree except I really hate that there is an agent bribery mechanic, besides that it is basically the essence of the best of TW distilled into one game
Vassals are pretty much useless.
Rise of the Samurai?
I agree on the first part, but man is the second part wrong.
The biggest problem is that naval battles are an absolute chore because the AI sits at the back of the massive, empty maps and don't do anything, plus fleets are so powerful that you can't leave them alone even though there's only one ship in at least half of them. Though when the AI doesn't do that, they're the most fun naval battles in the series, to be fair.
It also has a bunch of massively exploitable bugs.
It's a great game, but everything absolutely does not just work as intended.
it reminds of something
“God fights on the side with the best artillery.” - Napoleon Bonaparte
wp as always legend
Fantastic employment of a reverse slope defence on the first battle
The concept is to position forces on the tactical defence such that the enemy need to advance into your concentration, and are engaged as they crest a hill within range of many of your units. It comes down to your layout as to how the AI prioritizes targets for rifle fire, but they generally won’t get the first, second, or third shot off, sacrificing range and offensive power for defensive lethality and security.
Second battle was some great stuff. Defence in *Depth.
Even that late battle flank you had covered by terrain isolation and your reserve levies. Just overall solid defence.
I have never seen an artillery barrage like that opening barrage in the first battle. That was so satisfying seeing cannons work like that. I’ve played napoleon and empire and they just don’t have that same affect I feel artillery should. And medieval they’re obviously less advanced so that makes sense.
Do try Fall of the Samurai, it is the best gunpowder total war in existence. No other comes even close!
Arty is just meh in Empire and Napoleon. In FOTS you really see how powerful cannons actually should be in that time period
The artillery in this game is incredibly satisfying.
What Legend Loves: Hills
What Legend doesn't Love: Obama jokes
There's a HILLary-joke there somewhere, but that's beneath me (since I'm on a hill).
@@ilesalmo7724 that works.
and it is because of the obama stuff he had to pre record the whole campagin and more.
People need to start having cavalry on their armies
True, honestly shocked that the guy didn't have any yari ki in his armies. Best low tier cav unit in fots.
i try to atleast have 2 or 4 units of cavarly atleast in each army downside is the extra cost@@soviet_tank_lover
There's a general skill that makes your bodyguard unit like size 70. It'd insane how useful just that unit and a couple of Sabre cav can be.
Revolver cav is insanity
Saver cav is good anywhere
@@soviet_tank_loveryari ki isn’t worth it.
The modern cav units are easier to get and kills more.
Wooden cannons actually have a use in sieges - they're surprisingly good for counter-battery fire!
Why would you have them in your garrison when you can have another Spear Levy or Samurai?
@@Uragan00829because those units aren’t gonna be useful against enemy arty. Plus your castle will have 1-2 spear levy already in it
@@RuskiFuze01 I would rather recruit cav that will kill artillery rather that using shitty artillery with no killing potencial. And how do you know it will actually destroy enemy artillery? It's just impractical (3 turns to recruit btw)
@@Uragan00829 me personally I don’t let myself get put under siege and I don’t recruit cannons until I get Armstrong guns but I did a campaign with shit I never use and since I use cav, I didn’t use them so I had to use wooden cannons to fight enemy arty.
@@RuskiFuze01 I just hate them, they seem useless to me. Even the description says that they suck, so what's the point of them? Maybe to show how Japanese canons were terrible compared to "Western" ones?
Your Obama Campaign made me want to do a Obama Republic campaign on legendary difficulty. It was incredibly fun, thanks!
THANKS OBAMA
Oky OBAMA
"Time to start shooting Obama"
"Oh my god he killed Obama"
I don't think Legends getting put in the book for this one but I think he's absolutely on some sort of FBI list lol
He shouldn't have attacked the Obama campaign if he wanted to keep the FBI off him
Strategic big mistake : planning the campaign as a typical imperial campaign, expanding to the center while keeping the Satsuma Tosa and Saga in your rear (which would be very secure if going imperial, even though they are useless), instead of backing yourself into a corner by taking Kyushu. Which would have allowed keeping all forces toward the center and only a limited force where the AI decides to focus its naval landings.
Thanks for making these FOTS videos. Got me back into shogun 2 and I’ve gotta say, I missed evaporating armies every other turn. I even fight auto resolvable naval battles just to try and get ships to explode
"Defeat in detail", "defense in depth", and "overlapping fields of fire" ❤
Ahh yes another edition of Legend "really liking this hill" :D
Preemptive F for this guy's campaign. I don’t think he recruited any Ninja, which are absolutely critical to a Republic Campaign, because they are your best (and sometimes only) way to get rid of enemy agents, especially Geisha. High level Geisha in the hands of the AI will fuck you up big time, especially if you can't get rid of them.
FUCK... ;)

I was honestly hoping after I heard legend call us unoriginal… 😅😅 to see a spam of Obama comments/jokes in here 😢🤣 maybe we will, just too soon now.
Obama’s last name is actually takayama
Legends obsession with hills is so funny every time😂
Man loves a good pair of mounds.
You’d be obsessed with hills too if you fought battles with the odds Legend does
You cannot survive on legendary without hills, I suck at this game and have never touched legendary and I can't do without them in defense.
FotS can create such cinematic looking battles. The sound design is on point too.
Best total war ever! Shame we will never get another like it...
Bruh the Titus Pullo reference? Fuckin glorious and well timed
I’m wondering why you decided not to utilize killzone on your artillery, they give a straight buff to accuracy
Personally, I don't like it because I feel it makes the artillery too precise for its own good. Four shots all landing in the exact same place isn't helpful.
@LegendofTotalWar loved how you made a remark 20:20 of Titus Pullo from de Rome Series. Guy refusing to hold the line. RIP for the actor
"Hank Hill here, welcome to LegendofTotalHill."

Your videos are so good. I've never even played a Total War game and I'm addicted to watching your disaster campaigns.
the bodies stewn across the field... FOTS shows the devastation of battle so well!
never took notice of how much smoke fills the air untill now. very atmospheric
The hills are alive with the sound of Legend.
I don't know if it's just me, but I'm baffled beyond reason that someone went Republic without a navy. From fire support, to protecting buildings, to harassing enemies, naval warfare is the one thing that's an absolute must for a Republic that stands outnumbered and outgunned, so that the enemy won't just shred your economy with impunity. Also, why isn't every damn port a military port? Trading ones WILL get bombed to hell anyway, so just make every single one a Military one. It keeps the AI away most of the time and checks invasions. Just.. seems illogical, I don't know.
I love watching Fall of the Samurai. I just picked it up myself after watching a few videos. Would love to see more about it, as I'm going into the game blind.
Sincerely, is easy af to play fots since the kneel fire + armstrong artillery with +20 acc is a thing. just 5 line infantry with 4 armstrong can remove 2 armies at once. The big ass problem with republic is a macroeconomic one: every clan bombing your main income: the ports, specially your foreign port, leaving you poor. Thats why i always use ishin shishi and shinsengumi and 1 weak army to rebel and conquer with the minimun effort in my budget and make tons of money before the big RD
idk, I always found foreign trade a bit underwhelming hence I focused on internally generated income and by the time I was declaring Republic I could easily field 4 fleets to guard myself from deepstrikes and 6 land armies to push
@@Romczy who needs 6 armies lol
@@agostinho6550 if you are playing Choshu, Nagaoka or any clan that upon declaring Republic will be fighting on two fronts, having 6 armies allows to you comforatbly push forward without worrying about losses too much. Should one army take too much pounding, you still have two more to push on that side
@@Romczy and thats is the wise choice, but cmon, there is no tech that gives more with less amount of time to tech up than the foreign port + foreign units. Is like a drug. You know what to do but cant resist to research it lol, and once you have enjoyed the benefits, boom, rd
@@kolpere1625 foreign units (cannons excluded) are limited to 6 per faction if I remember correctly. Researching corruption reduction along with tax rates gives enough boost to simply not care about France/UK/US trade. Yes, it takes a bit more time, but saves you the need to deal with disasters. Plus having four fleets should be more that enough to secure your ports. trade lanes will still be raided but oh well
Lol legend of total war " I really like this hill here " 🤣 true enough tho 💯🤣
Now I want to declare an independent Republic as the Obama clan.
Under god
my damn how well was the gun and artillery gameplay in this game, it's soo immersive
Wow, the Tosa became the shogunal vanguard? Quite a backstab
Towards the end of the video there's a question of if the units have enough movement to get to the settlement. As a matter of fact I'm not completely sure, but if they get /next/ to the settlement, you can select the whole settlement garrison, move them on top of the army next to the settlement, and then you can move the whole stack inside. Weird, but it works.
"Remember, the goal is to sieze the castle, not destroy it."

Legend of Total Hill
Can't wait for the next installment of _Hills of Japan_
The Shogun 2 content recently has inspired me to start playing it again, its such a fun game.
There is a misapprehension that being on the hill is always the best in fall of the samurai. However, bullets kill pretty much regardless so the important thing is just that all your men are shooting. In the first battle, he could have taken what's called a reverse slope defense where all his soldiers can shoot the top of the hill. Any enemy unit that reaches the top of the hill gets almost immediately obliterated because every unit on the defense can fire at the same time. Its less effective against melee because the melee units will then charge down the hill and get you, but when they are gun infantryn it means that they have to descend, taking fire constantly, if they want more than 1 unit to shoot. In a hilltop defense, if they engage the unit at the bottom at maximum range, the rest of your army can't fire without moving forwards. The attacker ends up having an advantage, strictly for ranged combat.
Legend and hills, I think we can say that he is a fan of high hills XD
It's important to note that garrison units do not cost upkeep, and always replenish to full strength after the battle provided you still hold the castle/province, and are not under siege. So not only are they good blockers/cannon fodder in the sense that they are your worst unit, but they can also suffer casualties in place of your actual units. Allowing you to keep more of your force on the campaign map intact to go on the offensive. I always use them as a "first line of defense" in castle battles, and can be similarly used as disposable units when breaking a siege.
I FIGHT FOR THE REPUBLIC
FOR DEMOCRACCYYYYY!!
I’m so glad I bought this game right after your first video about it recently. Such a nice break from warhammer

the amount of smoke that the guns create really encapsulates the lack of visibility and chaos these battles created

I forgot how satisfying cannons are in this game.
Loved the Titus Pullo joke 20:19
You used artillery to its fullest extend as a centerpiece of your army. Intercepted troops before they could link up and exploited enemy mistakes. Napoleon would be proud.
Defence in DEPTH
We need a plushy of a tiny japonese hill with a tiny man and his tiny cannon, I'd buy that in a flash!
The power of the artillery in this game is epic
Artillery by itself is pretty decent in FOTS, what is really epic is calling in naval fire support. If you have a couple of frigates, like 2-3 parked offshore you pretty much obliterate anything inside the focused fire support circle. just got to time it right so the AI wouldnt dodge it. the wider one is still useful as the AI doesnt dodge that one well
@@Pilvenuga So true. I almost forgot about the naval fire support. It really makes this game feel like a transition into modern warfare.

Legend are you planning on covering naval FOTS battles ? Theyre so satisfying to watch
If someone sends a naval battle in, then sure. I haven't received any yet.
Just had a semi-disaster myself with oda legendary. Takeda brought 3 stacks into mino while my main stack was out west. Had 2 sub-par stacks with mostly yari ashigaru. I attcked them or else my "general" wouldve been a yari ashigaru unit. In the end only 1 out of 4 yari wall lines were left. What sealed their fate was probably them using every melee unit they had on my yari wall near the end. That made them lose alot of men and they were tired by the time they broke through the second line.
I have forgotten how beautiful artillery kills were in this game The utterly destroy!
Would love to see some challenge campaigns in the future, maybe like shogun 2 gunpowder only with the otomo
Where are the marines though? At this point in the campaign Id have expected at least a couple. Marines are just so valuable, expensive, yes, but wortj so much on the battlefield too
Royal marines aye aye sir!
i'd love to see a new FotS lets play!
Sheesh. I'll keep my filthy casual thousands of hours passive Shogun 2 gamer status, thank you. But watching you destroy armies with minimal losses never gets old.
