Actually i kinda enjoyed it. Seeing the council pay for their stupidity was kinda gratifying. Politician can be replaced. Stupid ship with stupid design. Just a sponge for enemy fire.. The Asari should learn to design their ship better..like the humans or the turians do! xD Also, no way i would waste humanity fleets (which is one of the smallest in ME1) to save some xeno who did nothing to earn it. Especially on a strategically illogical and suicidal move. It's war not a charity. The fact that my actions created a power vacuum humanity could exploit to gain more power was just a fortunate accident.
To be honest focusing Sovereign was the best decision there. We are talking about a reaper which about to activate citadel relay. Taking down sovereign before doing that is more logical than saving the council and ascension. Asari stucked in the past. Too proud and Destiny Ascension was the symbol of their arrogancy. Now its gone they will surely understand. Only fleets ready there was Allience because they took Reaper threat more seriously while other species were denying it. If you save the council theyll give the seat to humanity out of pity. If you dont they give it because they see how capable humans are.
This moment is the biggest logical gap/mistake in the Mass Effect series to me. It makes infinitely more sense to let the council die than save them. There should have been negative consequences for saving the Ascension.
I liked the idea of humanity being a savior in the first game. They wanted the trust of the council and they work hard for it. Letting the council die goes to show that they were right about humans

The best way to do that, to ensure victory and necessarily the survival of all the Council races, is to commit to destroying Sovereign. If anything, saving the Council is indicative of a species that cared more about its own advancement than about the greater good. And thereby, unworthy of being a on the Council.
Never flinched less on an Issue. Save a stupid ship full of replaceable politicians OR throw every bullet, ship and man at the REAPER walking the Citadel. Really who is dumb enough to risk the galaxy to save a giant azure that is just a sponge for enemy fire? Also, sacrificing the human fleet (the smallest in ME1) for some xeno who did nothing but stonewalling you (and ground your ship) is just wrong. Let the turian throw some dreadnought at the problem. This way the xeno will learn not to fuck with humanity.
Sacrificing the council is the most logical decision here. Yes Destiny Ascention is a powerful ship but it won't help at all in this battle and without the knowledge of the Battle for Earth in ME3 there is no reason to risk losing some of your forces protecting it instead of focusing on Sovereing. Still the moment Joker just hangs up on the Asari is pretty heartless.
Bro I could've sworn no matter what you come out victorious so *both* decisions are okay you defeat sovereign and don't let the reapers invade. This scenario makes humanity too ambitious
after this comes the decision of taking long as possible to reach thessia in me3 so reapers do their magic enough that asari won't ever be able to rule
I always let the Council die because 1 they're blind and stupid, 2 they were always holding back on Shepard and everyone else, 3 they always denied that the Reapers don't exist, and 4 everytime that humanity asks for help they always ignore us.
The council is completely useless, but letting a beauty like the Destiny Ascension die is sacrilege.
