@@taylorneubauer4340 as a full substitute, it requires more investment with a dock, portable keyboard, monitor, etc. Even with the extra cost for accessories, the device definitely pulls its weight, surprisingly well. It's literally a little portable desktop class machine. But for my needs, I use it like a feature capable ipad, just need the device, access to my SAP online, and emails. I've done team meetings on it without anyone the wiser I wasn't sitting at my desk. It's amazing in my use case. While some see full Win 11 as a downside, it's a huge upside for me bc I have access to all my work applications.
Nice video! Playnite helps quite a bit, but Steam is still where the bulk of PC gaming occurs. If Steam Big Picture Mode would work flawlessly without any Windows quirks, I'd love my Ally X. Honestly though, it's such a pain to use outside of handheld mode and docked PC mode, trying to use it like a Nintendo Switch or Steam Deck, docked to a TV, still leaves a LOT to be desired as Windows frequently gets in the way still. Bazzite helps, but the device runs much hotter with Bazzite and you sacrifice all the additional AMD features like RSR, RIS, and AFMF that make this device show large performance gains compared to the Deck and Legion Go.
Don't get me wrong, I agree - I think Steam OS is great. Limiting on the SteamDeck due to linux, and game compatibility (with some titles I enjoy) but there are workarounds, especially for Battlenet games like Diablo. That being said, I've been using Playnite, and don't have any real issues with it. I like the auto-launch/ close for launchers, and it is very smooth and light on the Ally, to where it doesn't pose an issue for performance. When it comes to DOCKING it though, you're right - as a straight up "switch", its not the best. To be fair, I do own consoles, and have PC's to play on so I don't typically use the Ally in another mode, aside from handheld the way it's intended to be used. I think we can all agree, Windows is the best, and worst thing for these handhelds. Great compatibility but can make some things a chore. Though, I will take some of the annoyances that come along with it if it means I am able to play ALL of the games I own with no compatibility issues.
There's something called Emudeck Game Mode or something like that, it will emulate Steam Deck on Windows without sacrificing all the features on windows

The main reason I'm looking to pitch out an extra 200 bucks on this instead of the Legion Go, despite ASUS's recent issues with customer service and warranty refusals, is that it is so top-notch and I haven't actually talked to anyone who had to return one due to faulty hardware. I want to replace my work laptop with it. I already carry around a portable monitor, 85wh battery with an outlet, and keyboard and mouse with me. This will be smaller than the laptop I'm replacing it with, and be able to replace my gaming laptop as well. The honest truth is I would just buy a X1 instead of this. Even if it costs $200 more. Once you’ve committed to paying $800+ then what’s the difference? You obviously have the money.
Managed to pick up the original ally for about £320 as an open box deal. For me it’s is phenomenal and the further £480 probably wouldn’t give me more value. However those picking up the X with the better battery life and more ram are in for a hell of a good time. Blows me away what the ally is capable of :)
Only issue is the tiny screen I tried the legion go and man it’s sooooo hard to go back to ally screen after the size of legion go one and even portal one. If they could have just given us an 8” screen would be best to me.
It’s the same as the extreme besides a few tweaks and a bigger battery. I say if you got the money go for it otherwise you’re not really missing. Nothing keep your extreme and just enjoy and have fun.
The “extreme” you are mentioning is the SoC, the Ally X also has the Z1 extreme - but because of the additional memory (24GB vs. 16) and it being clocked much higher you can allot more to the GPU, (I have it set to 8) with 16 left over for RAM. Meaning you could play more demanding titles with less issues (on paper).
They really should have put an OLED screen on this. After using my desktop monitor and switch then going back to the Ally it definitely is a bit disappointing. Even if it cost battery life a bit and was a bit more expensive I wouldn't have minded.

Amazing video!! question, I will use it mainly docked, can it run 3d modeling software? for 3d printing objetcts i mean, nothing too big/complex (I already have a monitor, M&K). thnks in advance!
Oh no no, he was talking about the original Ally which only had support for the XG Mobile dock. They removed it in favour for USB4, so a lot more compatibility
No X is black, Rog Ally Z1 extreme is white but still close in performance but X fixed cooling issues and more connection ports and better battery life.
I modded my ally, ended up just buying the ally x battery, 3d printed the battery tray and a couple of other things, got a adaptor to plug and and play the ally x battery and now I don’t need to upgrade. Only reason why I did this was because I have the 3080 egpu , didn’t want to sell both just to get the ally x, I’m happy with the mod, works perfect and now I get several hours at turbo
Im curious about one thing in particular with the Ally X. Does 25W and up still blow very hot air right where your fingertips are or is it cooloer with the new cooling system? I tend to rarely use 25W/30W on my Z1E Ally because the hot air tends to burn my fingertips. I'm still likely getting the X next year but am just curious about this.
@@valismind thank you both 🙏 I imagine it will also help that the Ally X is a bit thicker / more ergonomic so my pointer fingers won't extend as close to the air vents.
Just like the deck, the modules can be swapped out easily. No real first party hardware in NA is coming with Hall effect. The sticks would create less battery life due to higher voltage, the Centering isn’t great, etc. I understand people think it’s the go to, but as someone who’s played FPS on controller for 20 years every Hall effect pro controller, or joystick swap I’ve tried has had worse performance.
Look another Video with Steam Deck riders (Yes pun intended) shouting about a handheld beautiful screen with inferior hardware. The only reason you guys spend a lot time on the steam deck is because you're busy with work arounds trying to get games to work. Where Ally players are actually playing games. X users are playing for even longer.
Having had both , ally X is better . Hardware wise , overall games run way better on the ally X . Truth be told . And with bazzite you won't miss the steam deck at all
Just because it isn’t for you, doesn’t mean it’s “rubbish”. Saying the Switch 2 is “so much better” when it’s currently a figment of our imagination also doesn’t make any sense. Until it’s announced it doesn’t exist.
But WHYYYYYYY.... does it HAVE to be BLACK? ? Why can't I have the option to choose White? ? I like the White color better. The White color brought out all the accents, buttons, analogs, & holes & all that. The black just makes everything look more plain jane. I don't like it 😡
LOL I know. I actually wish the X was in white. Or at least a grey, or something different. Don’t get me wrong I think it looks sleek, but the white Ally stood out.
@valismind Of course it stood out. The White brought out all the accents & holes, & buttons, & all that. The black just makes the device look washed out. All the physical features just kind of blends in with each other & disappears into the blackness. It's like a black guy on camera in a dark room. The only way you can see him is if he opens his eyes wide & smiles with his teeth. Fak the X. I'll just get the Regular Z1 Extreme & just replace the analog sticks with hall effect one's, buy an m.2 extension bracket for a bigger SSD & use a badarse power bank for longer battery life. This is just as bad as buying a gaming laptop that has red accents on it paired rgb lighting. Just throws off the whole thing & you're forced to get it like that. Who the hell makes these decisions anyway? ? Someone bring me the baby powder for these hands. They need to be slapped & fired 😂

Amazing video!! question, I will use it mainly docked, can it run 3d modeling software? for 3d printing objetcts i mean, nothing too big/complex (I already have a monitor, M&K). thnks in advance!
I disagree I had a deck. Was cool and all but the z1 extreme is a nice upgrade for me. And for the same price as a deck 449 at Best Buy
That's a Thunderbolt port. E-gpus can still be used :)
Oh no no, he was talking about the original Ally which only had support for the XG Mobile dock. They removed it in favour for USB4, so a lot more compatibility
Does the X come in white?
No X is black, Rog Ally Z1 extreme is white but still close in performance but X fixed cooling issues and more connection ports and better battery life.
i wish 😢
🎮 let me see some more ally x stufffff planning on buying it this season
I got the steamdeck for the oled but i wish i wouldve gone with something more powerful
🎮 Thank you for filling me out with this is this helped a lot with me choosing
Thanks for watching! :)
…But can it run Monster Hunter Wilds?
The OLED screen would've made it better.
I love your fingernails.
Better review than the others
Hello, please tell me Zelda Tears Of The Kingdom how does it work?)
Got one last week, love it. Been playin Halo hah
Love that!
Im curious about one thing in particular with the Ally X. Does 25W and up still blow very hot air right where your fingertips are or is it cooloer with the new cooling system? I tend to rarely use 25W/30W on my Z1E Ally because the hot air tends to burn my fingertips. I'm still likely getting the X next year but am just curious about this.
same temps , watch benchmarks with temp infos 😂😂😂
Same temps, like the guy below said. But no, it does not heat up your hands at all. It does a lot better.
@@valismind thank you both 🙏 I imagine it will also help that the Ally X is a bit thicker / more ergonomic so my pointer fingers won't extend as close to the air vents.
I upgraded from my steam deck I can do anything now 😅
Feelsg good !
Love mine. Won’t touch my steam deck oled
We need a bigger battery
Steam deck fanboys storm again 😂
They're in denial, thinking that 720p shit is better.
Not only that, the Steam Deck APU is very weak too.
I like the review and opinions. But man, you have to stop recycling same B roll videos over and over :) looks like commercial on loop :)
The best handled
I agree
I am hoping to have one :(
I hope you’re able to get your hands on one. It is insane!
$800 but no Hall effect stick or bumpers... no thanks
Oled would mean no variable refresh
How come? OLED has VRR support.
I was frustrated with it and returned it . Thankfully got the deck oled so happy .
May I ask what was frustrating?
@@valismind windows and I didn't like the small screen and those bezels . Also its very dense
@@hk6926The screens are virtually the same size.....
@@hk6926screens are the same size roughly and windows is not that bad just user error
@@ReflexVEhe never had it at all clearly rage baiting
Hmmm, why are all your games running at 30fps? (JOKE).
LOL
It's a beast!
I agree!
I like your nails 😂
LMAO
I return 3 of these so that should tell you something!!!
really? Is Asus quality control that bad? where did you buy the Ally X?
🎮 🎮
Bro the raptor nails are super cringe. Stop with the 304s
Bro, that is a girl's hand, not the dude in the video.
That’s my wife idiot.
😂😂😂😂😂
this guy do everything but sure not playing with it 😂😂😂😂 just a youtube ads tech kanal 😂😂😂😂
Ad? No. - And did you even watch the video? I literally played on the damn thing lmfao. Sorry you have TikTok attention span.
@valismind Any idea how much itll go down on black friday?

Thanks for watching through!
Nintendo Switch Lite is 1/10'th price of this handheld.
Yeah it should be 😂
and 1/20th the performance and you need to pay for a subscription to even use a switch
@@Lxght_Lxght and switch is not even a pc it can only run switch port games

Thanks for watching through! I appreciate it :)
Bruh, playing cod on a handheld without a mouse on pc is deep, I wonder how the gameplay is 💀
It’s got aim assist. So it’s okay ahaha
Not that different from using a controller connected to your console or pc.
@Bubble23428 ah, that's not my point. pc guys play on mouse and keyboard, you'll have a 30% of a winning possibility
No Oled and to small screen. Steam deck oled is better!
Two different products. I prefer this.
@@touchingevil2302 can't agree more . I did return the ally x . You lose too much for a few fps . Not worth it .
@@hk6926 That is what i did to, Steam deck oled is so good LOVE IT ❤️
@@hk6926funny cuz I had to return my SD oled. I needed VRR as 800p upscale 540p with a rocky 35 fps wasn’t a good experience for me
Vou colocar uma tela oled de 20 polegadas em um gameboy color e dizer que é melhor que um pa5 \○/
Steam deck is better in every way. Honest truth 💯
So far the ally x & steam deck are the only ones that catch my eye waiting for black Friday to buy one of them!!!
It's more like Linux and steamos is better than windows.
How so
Having had both , ally X is better . Hardware wise , overall games run way better on the ally X . Truth be told . And with bazzite you won't miss the steam deck at all
@@WEAPON-MRX more like copium
These handhelds are rubbish the Nintendo switch 2 is so much better
Just because it isn’t for you, doesn’t mean it’s “rubbish”.
Saying the Switch 2 is “so much better” when it’s currently a figment of our imagination also doesn’t make any sense. Until it’s announced it doesn’t exist.
You don't even know what you're saying. Use your brain before typing such nonsense. Ally x is far more powerful than the switch
@@valismind maybe he is time traveller...?

But I like it

Your accent bruh 😮 kinda british not American for sure 🚫
I am Canadian, ahah.
