Wow, this one looks great! Never seen this one before. I thought there were some similarities with Out Zone given that some enemies exit/emerge from bunkers, and wasn't surprised to see that they were both from Toaplan.
@@MusicalMinerdude Was it graphically very limited compared to the arcade? I would be surprised if Genesis could handle this game without a lot of slowdown etc.
@@MultiJamesman Tbh I find it hard to choose. V-Five's Gradius-based power-up system just stays true to retro shmups, but Grind Stormer's bombs in place of that can come in handy at times, although I find picking up unintended power-ups there frustrating at times.
@MultiJamesman My preference between Grind Stormer and V-Five? Hard to say, really... As for the graphical limitations, there was certainly less color to it - I think I'd describe it as looking somehow brighter? Still aight to look at, mind, but the difference between Genesis and arcade in this case is very much like night and day. On the slowdown side of things, I think it was coded pretty decently, but there were, iirc, a few spots where things got a little intense for the ol' Genny. XD Still very playable though!
@@MusicalMinerdudeYep, Raiden plays extremely similar to Toaplan's Twin Cobra. The funny thing is that both games were extremely popular in arcades, so apparently they both had a really good formula!
Ugh I wish I never sold my Genesis copy of this... You can look back at these old Toaplan shmups and see how the programers who left at the end of the company went on to form Cave.
@@TheFieryWind99 it had another title on the cart though. Same version, but different name. I'll play it in a bit and let you know. I could be mistaking it for another game.
Awesome classic arcade action!!
Love Toaplan games!

I like how the different regional versions have slightly different gameplay mechanics that actually add to the gameplay
I also like that we got both versions bundled into the Genesis port Atari/Tengen released. Very nice.
Do you have a preference for one version?

Grind Stormer Longplay (Arcade) [4K]
Need an M2 Shottriggers edition of this along with Truxton 1&2
A great game from the folks that brought us "Raiden" :)
Sorry to burst your bubble, but Seibu Kaihatsu weren't Toaplan. Raiden was certainly inspired by Toaplan's classic shmup formulas, however!

Just played this arcade and.about 100 lifes just to get passes stage 2. Great game
Grindr Stormer
This had another name on the Genesis. You could switch between the two on the cartridge. Anyone remember what that version was called?
Grind Stormer. The port was done by Tengen/Atari.

@@azforu29 The another version is named V-Five. It's the original Japanese title of the game.
@@TheFieryWind99 there it is. That's it. V Five. I knew I wasnt crazy. Awesome catch man.
You can play a game like on your phone for free. This is a throw back of great arcade games...that ate your quarters because the game was so difficult.
Working title: _Bakuretsu Wing_
and it started as an internal project to train a new group of developers at TP, so not even a "full" game
Al have you done Battletoads the Arcade game? If not could you please?!!!!
