Challengers Movie Description:
Tashi, a tennis player turned coach, has transformed her husband from a mediocre player into a world-famous grand slam champion. To jolt him out of his recent losing streak, she makes him play a challenger event -- close to the lowest level of tournament on the pro tour. Tensions soon run high when he finds himself standing across the net from the once-promising, now burnt-out Patrick, his former best friend and Tashi's former boyfriend.
Challengers is a 2024 American romantic sports drama film directed by Luca Guadagnino from a screenplay by Justin Kuritzkes, and stars Zendaya, Josh O'Connor, and Mike Faist. The film centers around the love triangle between an injured tennis star turned coach (Zendaya), her low-circuit tennis player ex-boyfriend (O'Connor), and her tennis champion husband (Faist) across thirteen years of their shared relationship, culminating in the latter two's match at the ATP Challenger Tour.
Kuritzkes' screenplay was acquired by MGM in February 2022, with the main cast and Guadagnino hired shortly after; the leads trained for months with former tennis player and coach Brad Gilbert to prepare for their roles. Principal photography began that May and lasted until that June, with filming primarily taking place in Boston. Sayombhu Mukdeeprom, who previously worked with Guadagnino on Call Me by Your Name (2017) and Suspiria (2018), served as cinematographer.
Delayed from an initial September 2023 release in response to the actors' strike, Challengers premiered in Sydney on March 26, 2024, and was theatrically released in the United States by Amazon MGM Studios one month later. The film received positive reviews from critics and has grossed over $94 million worldwide.

I think Zendaya's character just wants to dominate/control. So brown hair wasn't a simp. Blond guy was. So there was no challenge trying to dominate him. That's why she wanted brown hair so much. She never dominated him. It all came together in the match. And then it was love all. Because they all got the best out of each other.
I actually think you understood the movie better than most reactors. In the end, it was just all about playing good tennis. And during that scene you recognized and started to get hype and enjoy that good tennis.

Hey Mel! I enjoyed the drunk reaction just as much as your final thoughts. It was fun to watch and some are taking it a bit seriously. Your dancing to the music had me dying 🤣🤣 With that being said, I actually think Tashi had some kind of love towards Art. But, she was physically attracted to Pat more. They had that spicy toxic thing going and she seems like the type to want that kind of relationship. Art on the other hand was kind of a “softy” to her. I think that’s why she blew up on him in the lunchroom when he said that Pat didn’t love her. At that point, I don’t think she was looking for love. She was looking for a good time and a “power couple” dynamic as you mentioned. But I do think that over time she grew to love Art because he was there for her during the injury and afterwards as well. He seems like he treated her well over the last decade and even went as far as proposing with his grandmothers ring when she passed. I think she slept with Patrick because she wanted to and not because she wanted him to lose the game. Just like she did in the flashback a couple years back when Art caught them in the lobby in Atlanta (I think that was the city). She told Pat that she missed him. They slept together and then he disappeared again. So I think this was similar. So I think this last time, she got her fix from Pat again and then he would’ve disappeared after this challenge ended. And there was a sense of guilt on her face when she came back inside and found Art sleeping in the daughter’s room because she sees that she has a good family and she ruined it (AGAIN). But it backfired when Art found out by Pat serving the ball as he would. That’s the first time I ever saw her get nervous in the whole film. When she realized that he knew, she starts to look worried and scared and I hadn’t seen her in that date since she got injured. One thing is for sure though. She definitely loves Tennis more than anything or anyone in this world. Overall, there’s so many theories to this movie and I appreciate your take on it. (Sorry for the long comment!)

2. I enjoyed this movie, it was very playful and unlike other sports movies, it feels like a little game. We're not supposed to think the fact that these guys are competing for the same girl is scandalous or the actual conflict of the movie. Every single second of this film is charged with a carnal passion for romance and sport. The chemistry between Zendaya, Mike Faist, and Josh O'Connor is utterly intoxicating, as is watching them navigate their pursuit of success in tennis as it becomes inseparable from their personal relationships.

I love that this movie was showing a messy love triangle in the perspective of tennis. You can see the admiration for Tashi within Art’s and Patrick’s eyes. Both of them wanted her and in the competitive nature, Art wanted to be with her while Patrick didn’t really take their relationship serious. Patrick always thinks he is the prize so he never had to level up while Art would do anything for Tashi even if that meant sabotaging Patrick and Tashi’s relationship. I think deep down Tashi wanted to be with Patrick( who is supper messy) but she knew she could control him so she settled.
I Don't Think She Loved Either Of Them. I Really Think She Was Using Them To Have Them Give Her Some "Good Fucking Tennis." I Think She Was Trying To Make Them Jealous And Resent Each Other To Create Some Kind Of Passion And Dynamic On The Court. Like She Said, "A Relationship." Just Think About When She Was Making Out With Pat, The Whole Time She Making Out With Him And Feeling Him Up, She Was Talking About How He Should Be Terrified Of Art. Then As Soon As Her And Art Had Their First Date, She Brought Up Pat And Said She Think Art Can Beat Him. Oh Shit! That's Why She Put Art In The Challenger! I Just Figured It Out As I Was Typing This. When Pat Assumed Why Her And Art Would Come To This Challenger He Guessed Half Wrong. She Probably Did Bring Art There So She Could See Pat, But It Was Mostly For Art And Not Her. It Was Like A Plus For Her. She Really Wanted To See Them Compete Again Because Art Was Struggling And Doubting Himself And She Knew That. She Also Knew That The Only Thing That Would Bring Back Arts Passion And Competitiveness Would Be Pat! So She Could Enjoy Some Good Tennis Again.

i think one of my favourite parts of art and tashi’s relationship is her knowing how to make him win. she tells him she will leave her, knowing how devoted he is, and how much that will motivate him. and then, she asks pat to lose - i feel like, despite the toxicity (especially the cheating from tashi) it somewhat shows that tashi does care for art in a way, as she seems unwilling to leave him (although this could all be about the tenis!). Just one pov :)
Yeah One Thing I Was Thinking Of Is That She Didn't Love Either Of Them, Especially If We Go Back to The Beginning Of The Movie When Art Says, "I Love You." Tashi Responds With, "I Know." Please don’t be so hard on yourself in the initial reaction. You were havin a good time and enjoyin the music, and you were able to dissect it better on the rewatch! The score is one of my fav parts, Trent Renzor/NIN has done a lot of great/popular movies. I loooovveed this movie and can’t wait to get the dvd!
IMO you did go too far with the Zendaya stuff during the reaction. And I’ve seen your Saltburn reaction so I’m used to your comments. But I really appreciate your review and how you rectified this. And I liked that you spent a good amount of time analysing the movie and giving your thoughts once you were sober.
Just one moment I wanna clarify for you is that we don’t know who one the final match. According to tennis, Art did break the rules by going over the net so Patrick won that point. But there was still more of the game to play that we don’t get to see. Tashi was happy because she finally saw some good tennis between them. Patrick got to embrace and find his friend again. And Art finally got his passion back (throughout the whole movie everyone has said there’s something missing in his game).

I can't understand the appeal of this movie because it looks like trash for so many reasons and the big one is story with mostly sexual actions for no good reason that it being a movie about tennis is forgettable.

I actually think Art is a better tennis player than Patrick. Patrick is just passionate about tennis in the way Art never was or will be. It's basically having a talent for something you don't give a shit about.

Lol, the reason why Zendaya and her dance mates seem off-beat was because they were dancing the whole time to "Time Will Crawl", that David Bowie song that plays after Zendaya leaves Art and Patrick to take photographs with her dad and her trophy.
The guy who made the soundtrack is Trent Reznor, mostly known for his band "Nineinchnails." He's composed a lot of other films too. You should definitely check his stuff out, he's amazing.
I LOVED every messy, complicated, toxic, co-dependent minute of this movie! Nothing cookie cutter about it at all. The time jumps like a tennis match (back and forth). Th music and cinematography - excellent. The ending was chef's kiss. Best movie I've seen in the last few years. 10/10
