Abigail Movie Description:
A group of would-be criminals kidnaps the 12-year-old daughter of a powerful underworld figure. Holding her for ransom in an isolated mansion, their plan starts to unravel when they discover their young captive is actually a bloodthirsty vampire.
Abigail is a 2024 American horror comedy film directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, and written by Stephen Shields and Guy Busick. It stars Alisha Weir as the title character alongside Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens, Kathryn Newton, Will Catlett, Kevin Durand, Angus Cloud, and Giancarlo Esposito. The film follows a group of kidnappers who capture the daughter of a powerful underworld figure and demand $50 million for her release, unaware of something sinister.
The film was announced to be in development in April 2023, with Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett attached as directors, and Shields and Busick hired to write the screenplay. It was also announced that the film would be a co-production between Bettinelli-Olpin, Gillett, and Chad Villella's Radio Silence Productions, James Vanderbilt, Paul Neinstein, and William Sherak's Project X Entertainment, and Tripp Vinson's Vinson Films.
Abigail had its world premiere at the Overlook Film Festival on April 7, 2024, and was theatrically released in the United States by Universal Pictures on April 19. The film received generally positive reviews from critics and has grossed over $42 million worldwide.
The film has been included on many best of 2024 lists including Variety's "The Best Horror Movies of 2024", Screenrant's "10 Best Horror Movies Of 2024", Bloody Disgusting's "The 10 Best Horror Movies Released in the First Half of 2024", TimeOut's "The Best Horror Movies of 2024" and SlashFilm's "The 19 Best Horror Movies Of 2024 So Far".
On July 8, 2024, the film was nominated for five Fangoria Chainsaw Awards including three for Best Supporting Performance, Best MakeUp FX and Best Wide Release Movie.

can’t help but feel like the marketing severely let this movie down. the movie tries to do this mystery for almost an hour about what Abigail is, but if you have seen any piece of marketing for the film this you already know she’s a vampire. so while I still had fun with the movie - the long build up felt wasted for me; would have been nice to be in the same position as the characters and figure out what is going on.
Very true but not sure how they could have made the trailer interesting without spoiling that. I guess make it look like a mystery horror but I don't think it would have had as much interest compared to the vampire premise. If I didn't know about it being a monster/vampire movie I would have not gone to see it.
Yea i was wondering why there was so much build up when the twist was already in the trailer. Still fun, but the suspense became a bit of a drag

This was never supposed to be an m night shyamalan end of the movie twist. The audience knowing took absolutely nothing away from this movie. It’s literally what sends this movie off. “wHy diD tHeY rEveAL iT” is annoying as hell. The trailer revealed “Dean” dies, too, did that ruin it for you when he died? Trailers should just be star wars style scrolls from know on, huh?
I mean, what choice did they have? Who would go see a movie just about kidnappers? I saw that it was about a little ballerina vampire and I was all in! 😃
@@zimvader25 No, the actual issue is filming the first half of the movie as if it was a mystery, even to the audience.. they could've kept it a mystery story but not pretend like we don't know.. but I would've preferred it to not tell us she was a vampire, the trailers could've just been a bunch of blood and screaming without showing Abigail be apart of it

Revealing what she was in the trailer is what made the audience go watch it. The film wasn't meant to be a mystery, its a horror/thriller. Us viewers are in on it, while the characters are left in the dark. I would understand if it were a murder /mystery film like scream, but its a horror/thriller like Nightmare on Elm St and Childs Play. From the trailers we knew that Freddy was a Boogey man and the Chucky was a Killer doll but that didn't stop anyone from watching and didn't take anything away from the overall story

Horror/thriller = mystery = audiences hyped on what she is and to wanna watch. Boom we find out what she is, its very shocking and scary.

I am so glad that you are pointing out how good Alicia Weir was in this movie. I thought she was the best part of the movie. Lot of people praised Melissa Barrera and kathryn Newton but not enough praise was thrown at Alicia. She killed it in this movie.
Honestly, those two were just there. Alicia was astounding in it and the reason I have watched this movie so many times.
If only they hadn't spoiled the twist in the trailers. This movie spends so much time building up to what most watching will know already. The film's still great, though.
This was my frustration as well. I really enjoy this movie a lot! I just wish they hadn't revealed the whole plot in the trailer. The build up seemed pretty good, but I couldn't really enjoy "the reveal" since I already knew from the trailer that she was the vampire. That being said, I still enjoy it.
The same thing happened with Terminator 2 when the trailers revealed that Arnold was the hero.
The code names are the members of the Rat Pack (Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr, Peter Lawford, and Joey Bishop), along with the comedian Don Rickles. Rickles was known for insults, so that's probably why Lambert gave [William Catlett's character] that nickname, after he mocked his dated pop culture references.
I love it when these reactors don't get the Rat Pack reference and us old farts need to explain it to them. And they think we're useless? lol ;)

My theory on Frank's transformation into a vampire is that the vampire blood made him regurgitate his entire human blood supply until there was nothing left but vampire blood in his veins.
A lot of vampire mythology has their human victims purging the unnatural toxins and whatnot that their body absorbed while they were mortal. It's gross, so this is the first time I've seen anything quite like it onscreen.

Honestly she gave the best child performance I’ve ever seen in a film. Like wow she played it to a tee. I can’t believe it’s the same actress from Matilda.

So Mell after editing this you probably already know but there are two types of turning in this that we see. #1. A simple bite, it takes some time but once the vampire that bit you latches on to your soul THEY spiritually turn you and then you are essentially a soulless minion with no will of your own. #2. Being drained, then drinking the blood of your sire= FULL AUTONOMY and being a full fledged vampire.
Ahhhhh. That makes sense. I haven't been into Vampires since twilight ruined them, so I haven't been in the loop for a while.
@@TheMarvelousM Twilight didn't ruin vampires. It was an interesting take on an ancient myth. Everyone has their own take on vampires. And the vampires in Twilight didn't sparkle, I know that's where a lot of the uninformed hate comes from. Their pores were so venomous and the fluid in them was so viscous that it reflected light and it made them seem like they were on fire or "glistening" (I'm pretty sure this is why the producers for the movie wanted it to be glittery) which is why they couldn't be in sunlight. The issue I have with the Twilight series does not stem from The Vampire lore in that. In fact I am a vampire aficionado and I would say that the vampires in Twilight are the physically strongest in any story. The issue I have with the Twilight series is Stephanie Meyer and her beliefs.
We missed the trailers, so when we saw that she was a ballerina we thought, John Wick, we thought she was gonna be some kinda crazy kid assassin, you know the Russian Ballerina trope. We honestly didn't think vampire at first. So...they could have advertised it as a crazy kid assassin, they didn't have to give the vampire thing away.
This is actually the second time Mathew Goode has played a Vampire; his first role was Mathew D’clairmont in the show Discovery of Witches.
The only reason I think the marketing did the reveal was because it was what was the element that going to draw the crowd in. Sure us horror lovers may have loved it just for the cast, but if you think about the trailer and pull that vampire part out, I am not sure how intriguing it would have been. It did also throw off the mystery element at the beginning of the film as well. We already knew what the deal was, but it would have been more effective if we didn't. I had my mom watch it without telling her anything about it and she was surprised and loved it. So I at least got to get her reaction from it. Regardless, I love this movie and it's on the annual spooky movie list now.
I agree with this. The reveal in the trailer was to reel us in. It's better to look at it from the stance of it being a secret that the viewers are in on. Keeping her being a vampire would have been necessary if the movie was in the Horror/Mystery category buts in the Horror/Thriller genre instead. Knowing she was a killer Vampire Ballerina made me wanna watch it even more. If you think about it horror movies in the past always revealed who or what the Antagonist was in the trailers. Examples: Nightmare on Elm St, Friday the 13TH, Childs Play Halloween. We knew Freddy was the boogey man and we knew Chucky was a killer doll, yet we still went to see the films and they were successful franchises.
She did all that dance herself. She is a dancer. So no cgi
I remember reading that Abigail is in the same universe as Ready Or Not so I’m assuming there’s more shi like this to come with different monster plots 😂

I never watched the trailer so I never knew it was a vampire film before watching it. I dunno if it would have affected my experience but I LOVED this film. I watched it primarily for Melissa Barrera (will do so for everything she's in forever, that utter queen) and I'm so glad I did. So much fun! Loved your jump scare with Dean and Sammy in her room. I know they're named after the rat pack but I just find it funny that they gave Kathryn Newton the name Sammy and have the boy thirsting after her named Dean when she was in Supernatural 😅

Vampire recommendations are Salem's Lot, Nosferatu 1979, Horror of Dracula, 30 Days of Night and Fright Night (Og & Remake).

This movie was very under appreciated imo, it’s really not taking itself seriously and most of the jokes landed for me. The actors were all fantastic as well so a solid 7,5/10 for me

That's why the hacker did the exact same dance moves as Abigail at the same time she was dancing. It's why she basically did what Abigail wanted as opposed to using her strength to fight back instead.

I liked this movie from start till finish and your antics and comments had me laughing the entire film. I also liked the switch and bait antics that happened during the movie.
Alisha did an outstanding performance. I watch the movie in cinema in France to support Melissa. She did a great job and still out final girl. But I loved all the cast. They had chemistry.

I knew she was a vampires but it didn't bother me because for me it was what happened afterwards that surprised me the most. And like you said people wouldn't go see a movie about a little ballerina girl who is kidnapped. Or not necessarily horror fans.
Sammy didn't fully turn because she couldn't do Abigail's internship. It was his puppet. Dance shows us this. She controlled her mind. Frank drank Lambert's blood so he became a vampire. Joey, like Sammy wasn't a vampire because she didn't drink Frank's blood and she wasn't under his control because it was too early and as Abigail says it takes experience to do that.

We haven’t had a good vampire movie in a while and I was very happy with how this turned out! The actress who played Abigail was amazing.
I recommend the movie Byzantium. Another vampire movie but it is a different take on vampires. May be a bit slower paced but I enjoyed it 😊

Please do both seasons of interview with a vampire. Season 1 has 6/7 eps and season 2 has 8, they are currently making season 3 but it is honestly a masterpiece and one of the best tv shows i have ever seen. sounds exaggerated? watch it and u will find out how right i am!

Mell when I tell you, I watched this movie for the first time and it was scary. You had a couple jump scares, but it was funny at the same time. I love the movie I could give it probably about a nine out of 10, but Abigail was a good movie. ❤❤❤
