The group of older ladies that are always with Alder are explained a little bit later on in the season. They're called Biddies. That weird sound that they make is usually when someone says something they don't like. I think of it as just something different for this world much like instead of clapping their hands together in applause or for excitement the girls tend to stomp their feet. There's just so much of this alternate world that we don't know about. Especially what day-to-day life is like for the average civilian.
