The Padishah Emperor frowned at the Reverend Mother. "You return from Arrakis shaking and trembling. Surely you do not fear either the Lady Jessica or her son Paul. Or do I misunderstand what I see in you?"
"She is evil, your majesty," the Reverend Mother said. "She refused to do as she was ordered by the Bene Gesserit. She was to have a daughter, not a son. She chose to have a son ... to please her husband! She will endanger us all."
"Including myself and the empire?" the Emperor asked in disbelief. "Surely even the son of a Duke is no threat to myself, my throne, my dynasty, and my empire. One person is merely one person."
"But if he proves to be the Kwizatz Hadirach," the Reverend Mother interrupted, "he is a greater danger than you could ever imagine. He could endanger more than just Arrakis. He could endanger the entire galaxy." She paused. "He must be eliminated before any of that can happen."
"What if the Lady Jessica has another child?" the Emperor asked. "A daughter this time."
"She would be less of a threat, your majesty," the Reverend Mother said. "She would be trained to obey her superiors. She would be malleable. A tool to use against her family."
"Unless she became something more, something almost as dangerous as her older brother," the Emperor said. "Would this be possible?"
The Reverend Mother shook her head. "It would take a drastic decision, one that no mother, Bene Gesserit or not, would dare take."
"Would it be possible or impossible?" the Emperor wanted to know.
"I do not know, your majesty," the Reverse Mother said. "The future is not set in stone. Events can change people. People can change events. But eliminating possible dangers before they go out of control might prevent unwanted events from occurring."
"Then why not eliminate not just the son, but also his mother?" the Emperor asked. "Surely there would be no negative consequences from such an action. Unless you foresee otherwise?"
"Perhaps if we eliminate the son and his father, things might be more likely to take a path more favorable to yourself," the Reverend Mother suggested.
"As well as to your Order?" the Emperor wondered.
She said nothing.
"I will notify my spy on Arrakis," the Emperor went on. "She will know what to do to the son."
"And his father?" the Reverend Mother asked.
"I believe that Dr. Yueh will take care of it with little or no persuasion," the Emperor said.
"And if he fails?" the Reverend Mother wondered.
"He knows what will happen should he fail," the Emperor said. "I have promised him a reward should he succeed."
"Then he can be trusted?" the Reverend Mother asked. "He might choose to switch sides should he be offered something better than your reward. Traitors have more loyalty to their rewards than to their commanders."
The Emperor narrowed his eyes. "Then I will have him eliminated along with the Duke. I have no use for traitors." He looked at her. "Understood?"
"Yes, your majesty," the Reverend Mother said. "If I may be excused?"
He nodded. "Dismissed." When she left the throne room, he contacted the spy on Arrakis. "Eliminate the father as well as the son, if Yueh fails. Do not disappoint me, Shadout."
"I will not, your majesty," the spy said. "You can trust me."
"I certainly hope so," the Emperor said.
