I had diabetes for 2months now. I’m 93kg and I want to lose 53kg within a year. I’m having the gastric bypass done 10 days wish me luck. *update* I am 1 wk post op now and I’m still recovering in the hotel, my incisions are looking good n healing well. I’m 85kg so since surgery I was 93kg, I’ve lost 8kg in a week🥳 pre op diet wasn’t required but surgeon told me to fast 12hrs prior to surgery. I can’t wait to see the results in 1month, so excited I don’t feel hungry anymore, I can live on one protein shake a day (sipping away) and little water. Can’t do more as I’m still swollen, bloated inside and recovering. Soups gives me diarrhoea for some reason.
Wow!!! What a great result. If any of your family members also are considering surgery, they should know that their chances of a good result are high if they share your genes!
I had gastric bypass 14 weeks ago and have lost already 24kg yay!!! I just can’t put into words how much this has changed my life, my PCOS has almost gone, I’m not pre-diabetic anymore I have my e energy back!
I love watching these videos. You are very informative and detailed. I almost wish I had insurance or the funds to get a gastric sleeve preformed by you and your team. I’m 32 year black male. I weight 270 and only standing at 5’5. My primary told me my BMI is around 44.9. I would love to be off of these pain meds and finally have a good night rest without this sleep apnea problem. I’m happy to see tons of people in the comments were able to get it done and taking control of their life
This doctor's job is to educate us on Bariatric surgery. If you are focusing on negativity just find something else to watch. Because Im serious about this surgery. Thank you doctor Matthews.
I am 21 years old 5'3 and 268 my bmi according my physician is 47 which is to be considered obese. I have always had problems with my weight even when i was super active in school (played softball). My junior year i was diagnosed with a thyroid problem. I did my research on gastric bypass. After my reseach i called a surgeon and set up an appointment. I am really excited and nervous at the same time
So glad to see you here-- your POV is fresh and right up my alley! I am loving following the Pound of Cure Program now as I am 4.5 years out RNY- I lost 100% of excess weight- and had minimal rebound- at year 3-4.5-- now after one week- I am so excited to see it is possible for me to lose this extra rebound! I eat mostly lean and green, and legumes-- but had added wine- too often and relaxed a bit. A Pound of Cure is JUST what I have been looking for!
I will be having RnY in September. Just found your channel as recommended on a FaceBook support group. Have to say, I absolutely LOVE this definition of success! Very inspiring.
Especially the last few minutes, Dr Weiner!! Not about the numbers so much few years out it's about being able to look in mirror like the body, know you're working hard to get it and having positive relationship with oneself and food!! Very true and not discussed enough sometimes!! I'm pre op in new Zealand, very grateful to be having it done at a public hospital here , your videos are very helpful . Thank you!
I have VSG on 11/20/19, I'm 5'10 my highest weight was 311 I was 288 on the surgery date. NOW I'm 201, my goal is 190. I feel amazing... I just constantly worry that as the years pass I will regained the weight...I live in constant fear of the future. Any tip to make me feel better about the future
I am sharing this video with my friends. I have several coworkers, friends, and family members, along with myself, who have had bariatric surgery of some form over the past year or so. We are all stuck on the number on the scale, but I love that you brought up the healthy relationship with food and your body. That’s what truly matters, regardless of what the number on the scale says.
I am laying down in bed after my SASI bypass and I feel so grateful for this content you created. My doctor is doing a great job at supporting and teaching me through the process but being a very curious person I happened to find these videos that are adding so much value and knowledge to my journey. Grazie mille from a spiritual patient of yours!
Almost at the 8 month mark from my GB. Been on keto since around month 2. Started at 315, with an "ideal" weight that maxes around 160. I am down to 189 this morning. Still losing from 1 to 5 pounds a week, with about 2-3 average.
Sir Jon Smith III congratulations 🎊🎉🎈 THATS amazing 😉 what’s the name of your surgeon please if you don’t mind me asking I’m just on my journey and I wanna look into all the good doctors available
@@elizabethclark2648 Dr. Machado. She was really good. I went to one in a different (Chico) area and they charged a lot of extra charges. This one did not and I really respect her.
I weighed 374 lbs in January 2019, and got down to 321.5 by the day of surgery on May 23. Today is July 23, and my weight this morning was 278.5. That’s 43 lbs lost in the 2 months since surgery, and 96.5 lbs in 6 months. By far the most success I’ve had with weight loss.
I am feeling absolutely GREAT after my gastric bypass surgery 4 months ago! I am losing about 2 pounds a week and I am VERY HAPPY ABOUT THAT!!! I have plenty of energy and can move faster than before. I don’t want to lose weight too fast neither too much because: NUMBER ONE , I want to FEEL GOOD not sick, tired, or fatigued; NUMBER TWO, I am vain and looks are important to me and I DONT WANT TO GET WRINKLES to the point of having to go to a plastic surgeon! Makes no sense whatsoever....your skin will suffer tremendously IF a person regardless of what sex they are lose weight WAY TOO FAST and this is a fact. A dermatologist or plastic surgeon can tell you that; NUMBER THREE, I do not care AT ALL about a dress size! A SIZE in clothes is unimportant to me and it is meaningless. What I MOSTLY care is FEELING GREAT AND LOOKING GOOD and not creating health problems by being a “skinny mini!” HELL NO! Being there done that. Enough of that. HEALTH is the most important thing in life, more than money, a house or anything else!!!! WITHOUT HEALTH YOU HAVE NOTHING AT ALL, period. And when I chose to have the gastric bypass was MAINLY BECAUSE OF HEALTH REASONS!!! I want to FEEL HEALTHY and LOOK HEALTHY that is my priority. What’s the use to be on a size 4 or 5 when you don’t feel good and look “sickly” and have all kind of “health issues” which they come by been under weight??? That mentality is for the birds and it is very ignorant! MY OPINION! One should lose the weight ACCORDING TO AGE, HEIGHT AND WHATEVER HEALTH ISSUES YOU MIGHT HAVE! If a person has diabetes that person needs to be on medication for the rest of his/her life unless they do the gastric bypass surgery (if they are obese) which is great for people with high blood sugar and even so they might have to continue their medications; or if a person has heart problems, or depression, etc. they are not going to stop any medicines even if their medicines makes them gain weight ! For what reason?? just TO LOSE WEIGHT TO BE SKINNY??? Come on....that is insane and very dangerous. In my case, Thanks to the Good Lord, I am a healthy person who doesn’t have any mayor illnesses at all, NONE! My parents had great genes and were VERY HEALTHY ALL THEIR LIVES UNTIL THEY PASSED ON TO AN EVEN GREATER LIFE. Having said that, I am very happy that I am losing my weight SLOWLY and NOT fast. Two pounds a week is FINE WITH ME. I keep my skin healthy and youthful for the “looks” and I love it. I get compliments as to how “young” I look for my age, and that makes me feel terrific. I guess I am doing something right. This has been my opinion and what I do in real life! Happy trails.....
I had the sleeve done back in late August and I am already down 104lbs. I am also off a blood pressure medication and now eat a plant based diet. Having WLS was the best thing I could have done.
Your videos are fantastic. I am getting a gastric sleeve on June 10 2014 and I love watching your videos.. in fact I am watching a lot of them today in preparation for getting my mind as strong as possible for my post surgery lifestyle :)
What did you do to lose the weight? I had my surgery sept 17th and it’s been 6 days I have not eaten my tummy hurts and I don’t want any food. I don’t even like food anymore.? Why is that.?
@@graceberrezueta1189 I don't think so.. 168 is actually a decent weight and you'd typically have to be at least 100 pounds overweight for the surgery so 220lbs+
I agree..im doing EVERYTHING right and I have only lost 35 pounds and I'm 8 weeks out..i have stalled and have stayed the same weight for over 1 month now and I'm so frustrated but I'm gonna keep going and pray I lose the weight..i had the full gastric bypass so b4 anyone has these surgeries really know that it doesn't work for everyone
Thank you so much for your videos. I had RNY in 2006 and had a goal weight set by my surgeon of 130. I was compliant and at the end of one year only reached 190. I was made to feel like a failure by my surgeon and left the program. I recently found a new surgeon who is helping me to lose the weight I gained and get back on track. He says my goal weight should have only been around 190 to begin with. He explained the reasoning to me exactly as you did in this video. I guess so much more is known now than 12 years ago. I WAS happy with myself and felt I could have maintained 190 if not constantly being told that I was a failure for not reaching my goal weight. Thank you again!!!
Glad you've found a surgeon who can help keep you on track. You didn't mention your starting weight, but I'm certain that 130 was way too optimistic of a goal weight. Keep up the hard work!
I love your videos, Dr. Weiner; they're so informative! My dad had VSG done in May of 2015 at 74 years of age, and he's lost almost 130 pounds! I'm having the sleeve done in a couple of months, and am hoping to have results similar to my dad's.
I'm 5'11 and I lost majority of my weight (85 pounds ) before surgery. after surgery I really only wanted to lose about 60 pounds or so and that's it. I had my surgery four and a half months ago and I'm only ten pounds from my goal weight that I set. according to your calculation, I would lose entirely too much weight, I'm not trying to lose 100 or more pounds after surgery, so how can I stop weight loss without stretching my stomach. again, I'm still in the beginning stages of my surgery but I'm pretty much at goal.
+missb19822010 the weight loss often takes care of itself. I caution anyone against trying to gain weight after surgery. For every person who is below their goal weight, there are 100 who are above it. Be patient, things will take care of themselves
I'm having the sleeve done I'm a my weight goes up and done every year. And I dont eat meat .vegan for one year now I eat only fish and veggies. I've gained the weight back again . Because I have hypothyroidism. So I'm hoping the sleeve will keep me from gaining and losing every year. I'm hoping it will be a success because I dont eat meat. 🤞
Just came across your video. Was sleeved Dec 3rd at 241 pounds 12 days I'm down 226 but 2 days ago still at 226. Been on liquids for almost two weeks. Monday puree food starts. Dr. How long do you keep your pt's on liquids after surgery?
I had it done.got really depressed. at the time.I lost my son and before that was having. a bad time worrying about loosing him so I started gaining weight.I gained 104 pounds since 2008. I will get back there again.
I start my 6 months program July 29; so that means I will have surgery next year sometime! I have had 3 children; 14, 9, and 2 but recently as of Dec/2015 I have gained about 60lbs, so now I am up to 308; heaviest I have ever been. I was able to walk last year with no problems but now my body, back, knees hurt all the time and lately my feet have been very swollen. I am ashamed that I have allowed myself to get this big. I use to carry my weight very well; as in you couldn't tell what I weighed and if I told someone they would not believe me. Now you can see it. I am going to get gastric bypass, I am very scared and excited at the same time. I know this is right for me; because of all the health problems, I have been having-GERD, pre diabetic, Asthma, Depression, sore body and the worst one Sleep Apnea. I am only 34 and I have all these preventable conditions. It's a long journey A life long journey but I am ready for it! Thank you for your videos by the way, I have been watching them for the last year.
what about folks who were not always fat? i use to be skinny, 180lbs very large bones (wrist 8.5in around) then in my mid 20's i started gaining and now over 400...
+Daniel Jackson they often have an easier time losing weight without surgery, but otherwise are not much different. The important question is why you started to gain weight so that you can make sure that make every effort to prevent regain after surgery
Im 349 pds and want ESG for many reasons, looking at at jacksonville Mayo for that, but my surgeons are saying I need really should have bariatric surgery, sleeve or roun xy, for greater weight loss. And they told me I have a slow metabolism today. Should I take thier advice and have the more invasive, expensive surgery or is there any chance I can lose enouhh weight with ESG? I do have a sister that just lost 90 pounds so far after her laproscopic sleeve. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
I wasn't always that my whole life either and then I my twenties after I got in the depo-provera shot and then had my two last kids I gained weight and couldn't lose it and I got up to 299 I had the gastric bypass 2 months ago and now I'm at 260 but I want to get down to 150
I recently had my sleeve done july 28,2016 and its hard to keep eating the same liquid foods all the time I already tired of eating chicken broth and protein shakes I don't even have taste for
I hope I'm a super loser my op is in 5 weeks can't wait. With my GPs help I have lost 10 kilos in 8 months. I have insulin resistance high blood pressure and RA the meds for RA suck for weight loss. I have i think hit the outer limits away from my set point so my body is fighting back. I hope my op will help me to keep going down in the right direction I'm determined. I Ordered your book pound of cure. It will be my bible going forward. Dr Weiner you truly are a good person your videos are a great resource. The fact that you provide this resource because you want to help us obese folks speaks highly for your character bless you 🙏
Had my surgery today, Gastric Sleeve, everything went well surgery was only about 1 hour and a stay of 4-5 hours and I got to go home ! 😊 (outpatient). Just want to let people know that the Gas X is saving my butt! The pain was bad! No the hospital did not give it to me- I had it at home. Other than that not too bad, no nausea, not bad incision pain, just the Gas bubbles. These video's Dr. Weiner does are so helpful and infornative, much better than sitting in a classroom with a bunch of people I don't know 😊
Your videos make me more confident, my doctor I've had since birth suggested I consider surgery. I'm going through insurance and they require 6 months with a nutritionist before I meet a surgeon so I decided to research now. I'm 20 and 292lbs at 5'6 and have been for years no matter diet or exercise I might take off 10lbs but that's about it, I'm a hairdresser so I'm on my feet all day. My mother had bariatric surgery in about 2005 and is still around 135lbs.
If you haven't already, check out my video "Should I have weight loss surgery?" Should I have weight loss surgery? During your 6 months try out the Pound of Cure program - it's likely that you'll discover some of the reasons why you're only able to lose 10lbs.
I I am currently pre-op about a month away I've been approved by my insurance carrier and my surgeon requested that I lose 20 to 30 pounds before surgery to make it safer obviously I've done so I've actually lost 31 pounds the question is now my surgery is not for nearly a month and I will be doing the 2-week pre-surgical diet but what do I do in between I don't want to gain any weight back. thank you in advance.
My sleeve surgry was Jan 24, 2020. I have only been able to lose about 45 lbs. No matter what i do, I'm stuck at the same weight.. I have about 50 lbs left to lose, and can't...
Why if you are a diabetic before surgery you won't lose a lot of weight? Since my surgery, I've lost 33lbs in 2 weeks and my glucose levels are perfect. You didn't explain that part about being a diabetic. Thank you!
I love your knowledge and POV. I contacted your office because I was interested in having you be my surgeon for my gastric bypass revision, but it's been a month and I haven't received a call back. I was disappointed. I'm now scheduled to go through the doctor who did my original bypass, which I do like. I was just hoping to have a different and more involved relationship with a surgeon as you seem to have with your patients. Thanks for your honesty and candor.
No problem, sorry that no one got back to you, usually they're pretty responsive. Revisions are a very tricky business and require even more thought than the first time around. Best, Dr. W
I'm an avid fan of your post bariatric weight loss surgery videos. I've purchased your book, A Pound Of Cure,as well. This is an excellent topic! Thanks for continuing to give very valuable info and info that really differs from most other bariatric surgeons.
I will be having surgery (gastric sleeve) in 2 weeks, I'm excited and so hopeful! I'm 5'4 and 240 lbs, high blood pressure, Spine issue's that I have to have shots for, swelling in my feet/ankles, pre-diabetic. Really looking forward to living better..eating healthier! I'll miss a few things like dt. cokes and so on but already have gave them up and doing good. It will be sooo worth it 😊 This dr. is very informative and helpful.
I am bipolar and alot of meds I take cause weight gain. I have PCOS and high blood pressure, diabetes. I made an appointment to see my Dr to ask to have surgery.
Thank you Dr. Weiner this video was super informative and very helpful. I have a clearer understanding of what a realistic goal should be. I want to lose as many of the pounds (fat) as I can, but I want to be able to have a healthy relationship with food. Not one where food dominates my life and my choices, and this will lead to an increase in happiness.
I don't understand why a person (especially over 50 years old) could not succeed on an appetite suppressant medication as an alternative to surgical intervention. What about the product called Contrave? When I had COVID 19 I had low appetite for 2-3 weeks. If APPETITE SUPPRESSION could result in weight loss then why not rely on it? Because if I am not hungry I won't eat, it's that simple! What am I missing?
Dr. Weiner, I had a Gastric Bypass on July 8 and am at a plateau. I am now weighing 203 and SO longing to get under the 200 mark. I have not had much support or orientation from the surgeon and feel that I have hit a wall. I really want to get to at least 160 to 170 at least. I am only 5'3" but since I am 63 years old I don't want to go down too far and feel all shriveled up. Can you help me?
Linda, my nutritional program is outlined in my book and on many of these videos and you should follow this as closely as possible. I also have an experimental new app that may help called CaloRatio. Regarding your plateau - make sure that you're eating right and exercising regularly, and then be patient, they happen.
Wt regain has to be directly related to diet compliance. I don’t understand the genetics argument. All the patients who have the surgery are obese so it’s obvious they don’t have great genetics. It all comes down to changing relationships with food and making it healthy and finding self love. Thanks for the video doc.
I'm going through the steps now and with long hair, it made me wonder why so many ladies on TH-cam say they lost about 20% of their hair. Why? Can it be stopped or at least slowed down?
I don’t but I just found out I can’t do the procedure anymore. I have Lynch syndrome for colon cancer and my doctor told me if I do this I can’t get an upper G.I. to screen for stomach cancer which they found a polyp but thankfully it’s not cancerous.
Your videos are very informative. Thanks, Doctor. I wonder what your thoughts are on gastric sleeve. I've explored all other surgeries, I've been told that gastric sleeve is that best option.
This is the best calculator I've found. It will calculate how much weight you can expect to lose based on your specific parameters. www.michiganbsc.org/DecisionTools/
I am adopted, so the question is moot :-( I would be Interested in your opinion about someone who lost 100 lbs across 3 years, consistent and solid effort, although loss was slow, the loss was in her 50’s, with lifelong PCOS snd apparently also Hashimoto’s. The endo said she should never have been able to do it. She kept all but 20-30 lb off for 6+ years until a leg injury and her mother’s death after derailed her. I think her chances are very, very good if she has Bariatric surgery. What do you think?
Dr, I have a very important question to ask you and a little bit more of what your opinion or thoughts are in my situation. I'm a 29 year old female with Spina Bifida, but only partially paralysis (L2-L3, can move everything except ankles and down)and in a wheelchair. I am 5'1, 220 lbs, the reason why I use the wheelchair frequently now is because I am to heavy to be able to walk with my braces and crutches and get tired easily. I had my first child at 21, and after that I just ballooned! I gave birth to my second child at 25. I currently have changed the way I view food all together, and I have made it a habit of choosing what's right and healthy for my diet, and do regular leg exercise and such, but I'm just too overweight and My primary Doctor, my Neurosurgeon both discussed with me the importance of weight loss. It wasn't until a month ago that my Neurosurgeon suggested I look into weight loss surgery because he said it would benefit me alot since it's so much more difficult for me to lose weight on my own vs a normal walking person. I also like to mention I have hypertension, high cholesterol, depression, and lots of frequent urinary infections due to wearing an intro foley catheter. And the only way I could prevent using a intro foley catheter is if I self cath like I used to, but the problem with that is that it's extremely difficult to do because I am so heavy and can no longer do it like I used to with ease when I wasn't overweight. So my question is, is if weight loss surgery in your opinion could benefit me and if you'd recommend surgery like that for someone with my health issues and disability? Do you find me a candidate for a surgery like this, after everything else is failing?
Candy macchio Yes, this is worth pursuing and probably your only option. Good nutritional compliance after surgery will be critical for long term success given your age and limited mobility. Strongly consider the gastric bypass.
my dad and sister are very skinny my mother is 280 pounds I'm 240 but i was never heavy growing up .i was very thin until i had my first and only child then i gained. after that i was diagnosed with pcos and pseudo tumor ceribri high blood pressure gerd etc... i wanted the sleeve but i think ill have to get the bypass. I'm so confused I've also developed a food addiction. I'm one big complicated mess lol
Have there been any studies comparing the wt loss of people that have been obese their entire lives, since childhood, vs those that have gained their wt during adulthood?
I recall in one of your books you said you could expect to lose half the weight you will lose by four months. Is that starting weight or surgery weight? If you lost a fair amount before surgery does that effect that halfway point?
What gene? I have had my dna mapped various times and by various methods since the genome study early on... it should be there or not there unless it is a previously known gene somehow
I am from lansing michigan and plan on getting weight loss surgery but i have diabetes and a lot of other health problems so I hope it can reverse it with surgery because my goal weight is 150 pounds but right now i am almost 400 pounds but I am gonna be compliant with the program.
The weight loss curve is always shown as a standard normal distribution. Is that accurate? In other words, if the average weight loss is 65% of excess weight, is it correct that 68% of people be be within one standard deviation of that average and 95.44% will be within two standard deviations, equally distributed between those who lose more and those who lose less? Or are the real outcomes more skewed?
In 2005, you may have been told that, but if you watch my videos, I definitely tell you that!!! Are you drinking beverages that contain sugar (soda pop, lemonade, sweet tea, gatorade, fruit juice, Kool-Aid, etc)? This is the number one cause of weight regain after surgery.
So happy to hear this since my mother responded so well to the gastric sleeve. I wish she would follow your diet recommendations. She lost every lb of her excess weight in about 6 months. She did end up losing her gallbladder. Is there any way to prevent this? Such as a gallbladder cleanse or purge or something?
Any recommendations for those trying to gain muscle after gastric bypass? Protein sources seem difficult to digest and getting enough (100-150 grams) a day is difficult, and may not even be adequate?
Trying to lose 15-20lbs.... So hard... Last 3 months stall.. I work out 5× week, lift weights now, eat about 1000 calories now, watch macros, cant lose????
How do you feel about electronic cigarettes? They have nicotine in a vapor form without any of the harmful ingredients that cigarettes have. No burning smoke at all just vapor
Dr. Weiner, I’m a little concerned because at my highest weight I weigh 191 pounds and my doctor says he rarely Sees patients with this weight which make me a little worried well I be able to lose some weight? I have BP, bipolar, diabetes that’s the only reason why I was able to be approved for this program.
I am 145 pounds down since my VSG 9 months ago. My period stopped after 3 months post op and has not reappeared since. Is it normal to not have a period for 6 months after surgery? I have been at a healthy weight (5' 5", 135 lbs) for the past 6 weeks and increased my daily caloric intake to 1,800. This has not brought my period back. Will it eventually reappear once I've been in maintenance for a longer period of time? My main reason for bariatric surgery was to improve my cardiomyopathy (dilated) condition so that I could eventually carry a child without having heart failure. This has happened in the past and I had to deliver my child two months early. Has this problem ever occurred in any of your patients? I am only allowed to see my bariatric surgeon at the one year post op mark, which isn't until October. My PCP just tells me to be patient and this problem will resolve itself.
Hello doctor I am 210lb 5'4 I have a family history of type 2 diabetes high blood pressure high cholesterol heart disease asthma COPD I have high cholesterol fatty liver asthma and I'm pre-diabetic I've had two family members have the gastric bypass but I'm not sure if that's the best one for me or the sleeve what would you recommend
If your family members did well with gastric bypass, I'd consider having that surgery since there's a strong genetic component to success after surgery. If they didn't do well, I'd recommend a sleeve.
I am 191 black America with diabetes, high cholesterol, and BP , And I have bipolar which I haven’t gained any weight from the bipolar medicine because it’s not medicine that will have you gain weight I’m on Zoloft medium dose and trelliptical medium dose And my half-sister was 400 pounds and through the surgery she’s 111 pounds I’m worried that I’m going to end up looking like an anorexia
Well I am having WLS next month..I sure hope I don't have the same issues as my Mom..She now barely a hundred pounds and is on a feeding tube..So.yiu just scared the crap.out of me.
The best decision that I made was to have the gastric bypass surgery which I had 2 years ago. It was a life saver. Lost 96 pounds, do not have diabetes, (never had) or heart disease; ((never had either); I still use my hormone patch because of hot flashes;; I am NOT a “spring chicken”; I am 69 years-old and I do exercise everyday mostly walking at a fast pace and some at home. So, if I did it, anyone else can do it too. I do eat everyday fish, vegetables and fruits, these are imy main foods every single day; For some reason, after the gastric bypass surgery, I can’t tolerate meat, any kind of meat. If I try to eat meat, I will vomit it all…..so I don’t try anymore. It is what it is, so be it. Restaurant foods DO NOT AGREE WITH ME, I have try it and I vomit everything so, I don’t go to restaurants and I make my own meals everyday from scratch using natural foods. I am happy, healthy, and feeling great. THANK YOU Dr. Weiner for all your videos, they are very informative and educational as well. You have motivated me to continue eating healthy. Love you and follow you and all your advice on how to eat right and be healthy for life which is my main goal. May God bless you always for all the great job you do educating people on the importance of having good nutrition . 🙏🙏🙏👍👍👍♥️♥️♥️
+Tennille Ford sleeve? There's a small subset of patients that lose very little weight after a sleeve, it's a difficult situation, but there are options.
April Rye me and my best friend both have PCOS and she had insulin resistance too. Gastric bypass worked great. She lost around 100 pounds, she was 280 Pounds. Stay strong you can do this. I'm only 1 week post op from gastric bypass so I can't tell you but I have lost 10 pounds!
Dr. Weiner, I am considering this surgery. My father had bariatric surgery in the 1980's, which was the balloon, I think. He lost a lot of weight, over 100 pounds, but regained it. He never adjusted his diet. I am already moving to better foods, a large vegetable and lean protein regimen. On the basis of this highly sketchy information, what do you think my results might be. Other info: Type II Diabetic, sleep apnea, current weight is 324 at 5.5 feet. Thanks.
Mark, back in the 80's, there were a number of surgeries done that did not work particularly well. When you are evaluating your family members' response to bariatric surgery, I think you can only use gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy procedures for comparison (not lap band, or any of the stomach stapling procedures done in the 80's). Based on what you're telling me, I don't think we can make any predictions based on your genetics. A 324/5.5 foot male with diabetes and sleep apnea who understands what it means to eat healthy and is committed to doing so for the rest of his life sounds like a pretty good candidate to me, regardless of his genetics.
Thanks, Dr. Weiner. I misstated my height, I'm actually 5'8'. Regardless, after watching your videos, I have decided to go ahead, because, as you have said, diets don't work and never have.
Doretha Jones Most of my medicaid patients take 18 around months before their insurance company approves the surgery. They are often denied initially and we have to file an appeal. It is a very frustrating and time consuming process. Good Luck.
Hi Dr Weiner. I'm considering surgery but am very skeptical. I have a stockier build and all the women in my family are the same. I'm 5'6 and 285 right now. I lost a little of weight but it quicky tapers off to nothing even with working out and eating healthier. I wanna get down to 215-220lbs. would I even benefit from gastric sleeve? I also have PCOS and that hinders weigh loss a lot.
Dr.Weiner I had the vsg surgery 16months ago I've lost 145pound but my skin looks so wrinkly please give some advice to what can help the unattractiveness.
Cynthia Martin I have a video about excess skin that may be helpful. Plastic Surgeons can be very helpful. Also, if you smoke, this is a major contributor to wrinkly skin after weight loss surgery. Finally, making sure to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables can help as well.
I had the gastric sleeve in August 2016 and I'm not losing anymore weight ,how can I get my weight loss moving. . water gives me heartburn which I'm taking 3 meds for that ,and protein shakes make me so sick. my insurance does not cover after care.I don't know who to talk to about this.
I definitely think I have the “genetic “ thing ya talking about- I’ve been consistent since day one in my WL which is about 1 kg every 1-1/2 weeks. Im now 6 months out. It’s still good but definitely nothing amazing! (20 kgs since surgery, 26 since pre op and 44 since my journey started 😤)
Hi Dr. Weiner, I have a hiatal hernia so my doctor suggested I fix it and do the gastric bypass at the same time. I also have PCOS and suffer from migraines. What are your thoughts on having both surgeries preformed at the same time?
That’s what I have right now is a small hetsil hernia.I was supposed to have surgery last Thursday and I got scared and I postponed it Because I was having a small little area burning in the upper part of my stomach that I later found out that was part of the hernia
I'm going to my first appointment soon with a gastric bypass doctor will I be scheduled for surgery that day or will I have a follow-up after this one I will be at a seminar in a few days and I've got a doctor and my insurance approval
Soups gives me diarrhoea for some reason.
how are you doing now...howmuch have you lost
Can we get an update Shazana?

I love watching these videos. You are very informative and detailed. I almost wish I had insurance or the funds to get a gastric sleeve preformed by you and your team. I’m 32 year black male. I weight 270 and only standing at 5’5. My primary told me my BMI is around 44.9. I would love to be off of these pain meds and finally have a good night rest without this sleep apnea problem.
Glad to hear it!

Hi! I’m 5’10 and 266. How long did it take you to get to 190?!

Almost at the 8 month mark from my GB. Been on keto since around month 2. Started at 315, with an "ideal" weight that maxes around 160. I am down to 189 this morning. Still losing from 1 to 5 pounds a week, with about 2-3 average.

I keep my skin healthy and youthful for the “looks”
and I love it. I get compliments as to how “young” I look for my age, and that makes me feel terrific. I guess I am doing something right.
This has been my opinion and what I do in real life!
Happy trails.....

Dr.Weiner, my starting weight was 315.
130 lbs was VERY optimistic, 190 seems more reasonable

I'm going through the steps now and with long hair, it made me wonder why so many ladies on TH-cam say they lost about 20% of their hair. Why? Can it be stopped or at least slowed down?
I have a video on hair loss - check it out

I don’t but I just found out I can’t do the procedure anymore. I have Lynch syndrome for colon cancer and my doctor told me if I do this I can’t get an upper G.I. to screen for stomach cancer which they found a polyp but thankfully it’s not cancerous.
Your videos are very informative. Thanks, Doctor. I wonder what your thoughts are on gastric sleeve. I've explored all other surgeries, I've been told that gastric sleeve is that best option.
+Majdo81 The sleeve is a great surgery, but so is the gastric bypass. This video may help: th-cam.com/video/A3cAJsaTnyY/w-d-xo.html

Is there a variable calculator that can give an approximate success percentage? I know there is one for cancer.

What are the environmental factors that contribute to weight loss over time?
The healthy food choices we make. Fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, beans, etc.

Have there been any studies comparing the wt loss of people that have been obese their entire lives, since childhood, vs those that have gained their wt during adulthood?
I'm sure there are, but I'm not aware of any off hand. A more important determinant is your genetic profile that we are only beginning to understand.

Great question! At one year, it's pretty symmetrical, but as you go out further, the tail on the less weight loss side gets longer

I had Gastric bypass in 2005 I weight 240lb.and in 6 yrs. I gained 60lb.back they don't tell you that. From Dallas,Tx.
Karen Vanzandt weight loss surgery is a tool, not a cure for obesity. It's pretty common knowledge actually

No, some people prescribe a medication, but it probably doesn't help much

Any recommendations for those trying to gain muscle after gastric bypass? Protein sources seem difficult to digest and getting enough (100-150 grams) a day is difficult, and may not even be adequate?
Don't think that much protein is helpful. Weight lifting is your best bet

How do you feel about electronic cigarettes? They have nicotine in a vapor form without any of the harmful ingredients that cigarettes have. No burning smoke at all just vapor
Better than real cigarettes, but still not great - not a lot of data about them, so it's uncharted territory.

Nick Renee This is not something I see often. You may find that your Ob/Gyn has more answers than your Bariatric Surgeon.

I am on corticosteroids 500mcg daily and occasional ventolin as needed. Is this dose high enough to make weight regain more likely after VSG.
I'm assuming you're talking about inhaled steroids - at this dose, the effect is minimal and shouldn't impact your weight loss after surgery.

I have pcos and insulin resistance, how much will this effect my weight loss after VSG?
+April Rye probably a lot. Vsg works great too help those with pcos
Dr. Matthew Weiner what about with gastric bypass? I'm leaning more towards the bypass surgery due to having problems with acid reflux already.
April Rye me and my best friend both have PCOS and she had insulin resistance too. Gastric bypass worked great. She lost around 100 pounds, she was 280
Pounds.

Thank u Dr.Weiner very helpful

It seems like a long run for a short slide. Very expensive, lots of nausea and likely temporary weight loss.
