I've always said, "Befriend your feelings." Eventually, I learned to be my own best friend. It's wonderful when we can be in our own corner because there may be times in life when there's no one there to get our back.

The best bridge statement I’ve found is the premise that “if I were such a bad person, I wouldn’t be worrying about becoming better, so I’m actually nice for trying”. It’s an universal truth and it can be quite relieving and motivating!

I've been journaling off an on for the past year and last night I had what I call a "butterfly moment" as I was writing in my journal. A butterfly moment, to me, is a major a-ha moment that dramatically shifts a person's thought to the core that their perception is forever changed for the better. In that moment, all the stress I had been carrying for months -- just lifted.

I started grad school a month ago, and I had my first kind of breakdown over the weekend. I’m in grad school so I can get into medical school. I often feel dumber than my classmates, and not everyone is willing to help each other out.(even going so far as to try to get others to slack off by making it seem like they themselves are partying all the time.) I have to come up with better coping skills, and this video is a good one I can come back to.

I have had low level depression for as long as I can remember along with social anxiety to where it has effected my life to where I can not hold jobs easily and have to drink to do anything social. I have not had a date in 23 years I have such low self esteem. I was my mother's caretaker and it was extremely stressful and the overwhelming majority of the caretaking fell on me and I was the least financially or emotionally able to do this. I did it because I loved my mother so much. She died at the end of Aug 2019 and the grief is so bad still on top of having depression I am having a hard time bouncing back. I have to because I have to work and support myself before homelessness happens. It has been almost 6 months and I have barely bounced back from all of this.

My resiliency was like non existent. I used to wake up and all but one or two of my chips were instantly gone from all the trauma and mess in my head. The good things didn't lift me up at all and the bad stuff brought me really low for a long time. I wasn't worth investing in or spending time or energy on things that were just for me or to care for me. An awesome counselor, some EMDR (still going) and a lot of work later and i'm getting better. All these are a good reminder, still many that I need to work on thanks :) and I always make sure to watch ads when they pop up! My little way of supporting what you do! Thank you!

My number one way to keep my resiliency up is to take care of my basic needs...the days when I can’t get enough sleep, eat often enough, or stay hydrated are the days I’m most likely to experience a “crisis.”

Love that you're covering this! I recently finished a coaching module on resiliency, where we use an assessment, explore the clients potential thinking traps, iceberg beliefs, use ABC's (CBT tools) and exercises to 'Put it in Perspective' as well as more! It's a really exciting and involved coaching model and I LOVE IT! All in all, in my program we teach the client to identify their pitfalls and create tools to pull themselves out and prevent falling back in :) I feel like its something we all need.

I know that since I started therapy, my resilience has gotten stronger. But sometimes I don’t even realize how well I’m doing - a crisis comes up, and I think I’m completely handling it wrong or that I’m not doing good enough. My therapist has reminded me a few times that I’m more resilient than I give myself credit for. It’s nice to have that outside confirmation and reassurance. 💛

these are very good tips! i used to have intense anxiety (and still somewhat do but less frequently) it helped me to journal, get rid of negative self talk and replace it with positive self talk, and have coping skills. one of the ways i coped (other than to talk with friends/family) was to watch A LOT of funny TV shows/movies/TH-cam videos. when it was hard for me to even wake up and get through my morning routine, i just popped on a funny TH-cam video and watched that as i brushed my teeth and it helped me immensely.

2 things that have helped me with resiliency:
I got a password protected note taking app on my phone, so I can keep a journal whenever, wherever, and not worry about it being read by others.
And 2: I got a fitness tracker, with a goal of doing 10,000 steps per day.
I've achieved this goal 9 days in a row now! It also converts activities like yoga and dancing into steps, so everything counts. It also tracks my sleep, and I can see that on average I'm getting about 5 - 6 hours a night. Before having a baby I'd get 8 hours most nights. So this makes me feel less guilty about napping when my baby naps to catch up on sleep.

I've had a few minor slip-ups (self harm.) but continue to get stronger instead of automatically giving into the urges or even the mindset itself. I fight instead of giving into going to the hospital. I miss the hospital less and less. I try to be patient with myself but it's frustrating. I'm 53-don't want to spend these years struggling to stay out of a psych unit.

It really helped me for resiliency to build my body awareness and meditating. Also, what I found out lately and that also helped was eating fruits more, especially bevore stressful/potentially overwhelming events. I think that works because of the fruit sugar, that doesn´t pull you down as quickly as raffined sugar and if you have more fructoses in your blood you have more energy and if you have more energy the chances of successfully getting out of a situation or confronting it makes you more likely to go in fight or flight mode rather than shut down, hoplessness, helpnessness and depression and it´s easier dealing with fight or flight, because you aren´t "completely gone". Though I will warn you if you are anxious (as I am too), because more energy and not being shut down also means that you can feel more of your anxiety so if anxiety is your main stressor (mine is depression and helplessness) then rather not eat too much fruit or sugary things in anxious triggering situations. What´s also important is co-regulation with friends/family/a partner in a situation that still overwhelms you or where your notice you have the urge to "overreact". Another thing is having a talisman (maybe a stone or an amulette...) close by your body so you can imagine it protects you and takes all the "bad energy" thrown at you or coming up inside in and transforms it to something good you then receive. Also maybe do a self devense course so you have the feeling you could strike back if you had to and don´t have to resignate. And: Know your strenghts and talents and use them. I, for example, am a very creative person, so I will draw or imagine how things had to be so I would feel safe or what I´d like to do with the person that upset me and I am usually one of the smartest 5% of the people in the room so I know (if I want(ed) to) I could verbally shred the other persons arguements or statements into pieces (which I sometimes do, but that´s not for everyone as it self-selects the people out that can´t deal with being made more concious and learning by not being run by your narcissistic defense shell). Or maybe you are very kind, then remember yourself, that what the person is saying "You´re such a brat!" is not true.

This is so important for HSPs like myself. Just yesterday morning I had a great day until I came across a narcissist (bus driver). I tried to apply at first (unknowingly he's a narc) NVC techniques for non violent communication asking him whether he's upset for me not walking to the bus in the queue but instead waiting for him to drive and goodness, he really DID NOT enjoy to accept any of my questions regarding how he was feeling but just aiming at putting me down ("next time just walk to the bus when you see it in the queue").
That not only stole some of my poker chips, but actually put me on minus. I'm in debt of poker chips and it's all about my response to the situation - the whole day basically was destroyed in a blink of an eye (am still not feeling well even after journaling, going out, talking to strangers, petting my dog, talking kindly to myself, doing self therapy [self psychoanalysis] and also getting good vibes from the protest for climate change I participated at [that's why I took the bus])) - even though I understand why I react like I do [all the triggers etc.], and I apply good self talk etc. it just swings back into this extreme where I am feeling enraged and as if the world will end to the point I feel like the utmost shit and can't do anything and this is because I didn't get much help/guidance when I was small for my emotions from my parents so I need to fill that in, but man isn't it so hard especially after you work on your anger, accept it to become weak and vulnerable in the world wide open with people just to fucking hit a narc. to destroy your sense of being and know that he has no empathy and there's nothing to do there? Even though I understand that, still doesn't make me not feel like shit. All the better, makes me value others more but it's very hard for me to come back from that state :( been 2 days now and this just proves how much I should still work on resiliency... probably until I die (most probably).
These videos help a lot :) thank you.

Your videos are very easy to understand and inspiring for realistic start for action. I subscribed immediately after I bumped into one of your videos. If you would pleade post a video on explaining the harms of using alcohol or marijuana to handle would really help someone I know and love dearly. Another topic I think would be helpful is to address a helpful solution to people refusing to take antidepressants to avoid the weight gain. Thank you so much for your time.

Never felt like myself. Around 10:40: "I forced myself..." BIG RED FLAG.
Sod your goals, living in the moment should be enough.

when i was tsrugglimg, i started writing 'letters to god'. every evening, i would sit down with my notebook and essentially just vent every thought, worry uncertainty and grattitudei had . in the end it helped not because it suddenly made everything ok,but because i realised i had gone through a lot but miraculously enough, i got through it.

I also found that when it comes to resiliency one should be creative and flexible. (Kind of like the philosophy of Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do) For example: I lost someone very special to me and to cope with the sorrow, I made a children's book about them that's good enough for publishing!
Also: I shared this video with my therapist! Great work as always, Kati!

I like to think of mental health as an ocean. The sealevel is at a certain height, and it takes time to change. Then there are waves on top that change quickly. The sealevel is your base mood and the waves are the more temporary feelings. If the sealevel is high the lowest point of the wave is still not very deep, and if the sea is low even a big wave doesnt reach as high.

When I set goals I alsways get cynical comments from my family and friends like: "Ha, you always make plans that never work out!"
it makes me cringe cause I know it's true and I find myself giving up on almost all of them right away.
I stopped telling people what I'm up to and for some reason they don't like that either.

Omg you mentioned 7 Cups! Also, funny thing. I’m a listener on 7 Cups, and my bio is “A burden shared is a burden halved” :D love this video, it is so much needed for me at this moment. I’m going to track my mood in the way you mentioned, as my current mood tracker isn’t working that great (so many moods in one day!)

I'm good with resilience from things that don't effect my self confidence e.g. being in stressful situation at work/emergency etc I can get over easily, but if something hits my self esteem I seem to hide away like an animal licking its wounds before I feel I can get into the world again and become my confident self once more

Hi Kati! Could you maybe make a video on CBASP?
Like... What makes it superior to other types of therapy / what are other therapies missing to effectively treat a refractory long-lasting double depression / why should CBASP help when other therapies didn't?

I don’t like goals, I can get too caught up with them, doing them perfectly, adding too many on top of others, getting so frustrated when I fail. I naturally work towards what I want to achieve and prefer to celebrate it when I achieve it rather than make lists to tick off
