Its really easy actually, the drums in polyrhythm but some elements are always in 4, you just have to follow that. Only when mangini's playing triplets, you have to stay aware by keeping note of some of snare hits, mainly the 3rd, 9th and 12th quarter notes
PORTNOY SOY FAN!! BUT WHAT MANGINI DOES HERE IS SIMPLY INCREDIBLE. IT HAS A HEART AND NEXT TO A METRONOME, IT MAKES THIS SONG SEE AS IF IT WAS A WALTZ. MONSTERIOUS AND I DARE TO SAY IT LEAVES THE ORIGINAL VERSION SHAKES
I am a huge Margini fan way before he joined DT. But, as a drummer myself I don't understand how this, while technically impressive, can serve the band. There's a sweet spot where the polyrythimics can serve the whole and bring wonderful astonishing feelings to the music. He obviously surpassed that to the point where it doesn't make any sense anymore and it is just odd.v
I saw them on the Anniversary Tour of Scenes and anticipated this moment... MM showed his chops for sure but for us die hard fans of this album he didnt do this part justice. He played waaaaaaaayyyyy tooo fast and the sound was horrible that night.... It sounded like he was beating on empty cans the whole night.
i guess i'm a Portnoy fan but it just sounds like he is playing his own thing and not paying attention to the band. He is good, but there is no reason to show off like this. When Portnoy did solos or impros back in the day (and soon hopefully), it felt like it belonged to the song. Rn it just sounds like Mangini wants to prove that he can do polyrhythm.
Or maybe, just maybe, MM is more artistic implementing skills MP doesn’t have and is not showing off his polyrhythm skills, but expressing his way of playing drums as an alternative interpretation of the song he’s playing his solo over. It’s okay to appreciate both renditions. MP won’t be upset at you
Portnoy just stating about this part in last Drumeo, that this part are for drummer to get nuts during the outro, so MM and MP can do whatever they want tho.
Dream theater: plays song for 20 years with new member that embellishes an already kick ass over embellished part that allows each member to shed a bit … Nobody : Everybody: nice Nobody: This kid : *sounds like Henry zabrowski’s israel Keyes voice*
MM Is stupid impressive, w/ crazy skills, but this was almost hard to follow, even for a drummer. Not saying it wasn't great, but just seemed to be too much.
Mike Portnoy had so much thought with this song. How can you like this version? It has nothing to do with the original!!! Have you ever counted MP's snares? And the shots heard in the song? Its ridiculous how such a perfect band could work with a tasteless drummer!!!!
stfu, you know what? You just a toxic portnoy fans. I love portnoy, but lets respect what MM do with this band. He just play like he want to play, what's wrong with u?
DT used him, and discarded him for the problematic portnoy. Bunch of control freaks, it won’t last long till they have to find a new drummer. Once broken there’s always a crack.
I agree 100%. There is no way this will last. Portnoy will start complaining about "The Canadian" again and take over the setlists and play covers. This is like taking back a girl who left you high and dry. It will never last.
@@MattySOP what a moron.i didnt say he plays bad or wrong. As a dream theater fan i hate his style and sound. He butchered all dm classics live. Dm was playing in 1500 person capacity theaters in US tour because nobody wants to hear old dm classics anymore. Thank god finally he is kicked out
@@Elizabeth_AJ you are just proving my point here, especially from a drummers perspective. Mangini's is way more interesting in my opinion and way more technically difficult compared to portnoys
I disagree, but I understand your point. There’s an excellent breakdown of the song theoretically, and it’s fantastic. Most of the audience is chock full of musicians that are in awe, but the people there for the music enjoy it, and Mike keeps them coming back. Excellent band, excellent audience, just fantastic regardless
“MP only” folks likely find fault with MM because he’s so efficient that when he plays MP’s parts perfectly, he makes it look much less dramatic than his less efficient counterpart who does a lot of cool looking but unnecessary movements MM doesn’t require.
I absolutely love Manginis take on this!
This was insane. No idea how the band could stay on tempo

Master Of Polyrhythm
Mangini is a monster. It's scary how he's playing with DT songs like it's a joke... Outstanding level.
It's a pity he's out. They could have kept two drumlers. It'd be great!
@@malaperzonaso Mangini is out of DT.?
2:30 once in a life time i see polyrithm playing in a full band live stage.
Finally done picking up this outro on guitar, feels unreal🤌
tbh, I like Mike's drumming
Thanks MM
Master Manginj !!!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Amazing!
Such a badass drummer.
Can’t wait to see MP kill the outro again
another level
Love this performance from Mike Mangini
These drums are getting smaller every passing tour
Awesome!

DT's classics songs are Mike Portnoy 's babies, and no one can play them like him, could try it but he owns it.

Or maybe that was his solo spot in the set? seeing petrucci and the rest headbang to count the measures while mike blasts is awesome, you gotta admit!

POLYRHYTHM SHOW OFF😂😂😂
I hope Portnoy could use the same sound equalization in his drum.

no thank you
