    On this 'Strip Panel Naked', we tackle inking, with a basic look at what Scott Williams does to change Jim Lee's pencils ready for the finished comic book. Analysing a few pages from Superman Unchained, written by Scott Snyder.
    Analysing how Williams keeps the rough approach of the pencils, and how he adapts the pencils to inks to further the storytelling and visuals.

    Ah inkers. The comic creators that may be the most taken for granted. No one really thinks about how the art would look like without inks. Great vid

      Neb Olevar Yeah man, inkers and letterers both. I think letterers *might* get a slightly worse rap in terms of 'value', or whatever, but neither get high praise, that's for sure.

    Having inked my own pencils for professional use, my thought on it is that if "penciling" is the equivalent to "filming" then "inking" is equivalent to "editing". A good movie needs both good cinematography and good editing before it can be called done; and it seems ink has a similar function, taking the raw material of the pencil and clarifying it into something more digestible.

      Yeah, almost like taking the rushes and forming them into the finished edit, right?

    Do a video comparison in which you compare inked pages that are designed for color and ones that are specifically designed for black and white.

      Elvis Cosovic Yeah that's a nice idea. A lot of that crosses with the pencils, too. Storytelling in colour vs black and white is a good idea to look at though!

      Elvis Cosovic This is a great idea.. I'm not a fan of some B&W comics as they fall flat and are hard to read and slow me down.. I have to figure out the depth, placement of people and objects, and what is going on. I think it's because those artists are used to working in color. Very rarely do I see a B&W comic and enjoy it.. as an aspiring colorist I find some B&W comics are nearly impossible to color as well, like a lot of TWD pages for example.
      I think this would make a great video.

    This is a very interesting look at the inner workings of comic book art. I actually thought that this was one of the pairings where the inker really didn’t add much to the art, but this clearly changes my mind on that.

    This may be one of my favorites because it asks a burning question I've been wondering for awhile. You don't see seperate inkers as much anymore, while they used to be completely standard. I always wondered what they actually did and why they were there. This helps clear that up and helps give an appreciation for their work.

    Thanks again Hass. I'll be honest. I've always known that inkers go over the pencils. That is the most basic thing they do. I've never thought they were useless but never appreciated them the way I do other comic creators. My opinion of them was much like letterers. They do their job and contribute to the comic. But now I see that they have to make constant decisions in order to make the image what it is supposed to be. I now have a greater appreciation for these artists and will have a greater understanding of them. Also it will make getting books signed at conventions a much greater experience. I once got John Beatty's signatures but I couldn't have the same appreciation compared to an artist or writer. Not that I was unappreciative, I just didnt understand what they do well enough. I don't know about others Hass, but you constantly are making comics and the comic experience as a whole even better for me. Once again I am a better fan because of this channel.
    Oh and giveaway or not, I would very much like to co write an episode of Strip Panel Naked.

      Kai Williams Yeah I mean, I guess the thing is because we only see the finished inks it's hard to know who does what and where each person fits. These pencil-only issues are good to compare to get a better sense.
      Glad they're still interesting man! And helping in whatever way, that's really cool to hear. What would you be interested in seeing some episodes on?

      +Strip Panel Naked I'm sure anything you choose would be excellent material. If you are taking suggestions, I always like to see what writers do well. I think the dialogue in Spider-Man/ Deadpool is something done well. A great opportunity to take a look at foils in this buddy cop esque series. Another is Reborn by Mark Millar would be intersting to disect the rearranging characters (that kind of wizard of oz effect) of taking characterd in one world and altering them in another. The Court of owls incorporates something new very well with a feeling of history. I think there is potential there. Those are some of my favorite comics but I wanted to think about why they're great. Those are just some possibilities off the top of my head. Whatever you decide to do will be something great.

    A good example of the effect of different inkers is the recent work of Chris Bachalo. In his recent work on Uncanny X Men and Doctor Strange he has often had six or seven different credited inkers in a single issue and you can really see the difference in rendering across each issue.

    • @StripPanelNaked
      @StripPanelNaked  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, they really can make a big difference. Even something like digital vs traditional inking can change the look of a book, then you've got inkers who might only use a brush, those who might use pens, and those who use both, and that's all before you even get onto the inkers "style"!

      Clint Stoker I talk a bit about writing in the Doom Patrol episode, but I will definitely get more into writing in future episodes. It's tough to get into the full parts of a script in 5-10 minutes, which is probably why I haven't done loads of them!

      What about making one on a Tharg's Future Shock? From 2000ad. They are short and always come with a twist, so they may be not simple but interesting to analyze.

    • @StripPanelNaked
      @StripPanelNaked  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Simpsoneer Nope! This was me.
      I used an inkwash reveal effect to transition the inks. So I took the original coloured pages, and did some edits to remove the colours while keeping the line work. It's not perfect but I think it does the job!

      Strip Panel Naked where did you get the unfinished pages? id love to read some comics in different stages of production. where they in the new 52 directors cut ? great video .

    • @StripPanelNaked
      @StripPanelNaked  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Simpsoneer Yeah. So that was the DC Director's Cut edition. If you search Comixology for Directors Cut you'll find a bunch of issues done like this, and then just cross reference against the finished copies.
      You can so get Artist Editions from comic shops, like oversized inked copies? You might have seen some already... They're great as collector/art pieces.

    Jim and Scott actually have things they have an "understanding " on , like speed Lines with a couple of X's tells Scott to blackout and reverse ink the lines. It is so interesting . Also Jim nowadays puts all his trust into Scott. . He had clean lines before but now after Jim bought Scott the "batman watch" he can afford to make his pencils a little scratchy and leave it to Scott . The two guys I admire because they stick with traditional art and not digital . To me there's more meaning that goes into it. Digital is for the mass . For robots and not artist . Manipulating the line on a computer is like auto tone for these fake rappers who are killing hip hop, true hip hop. And I'm afraid digital drawing will do the same. Junk

      Yes but you end up with very messy products, plus like this video explains, the inker has a lot of influence over the personality of the art
