    I remember reading somewhere that personal energy shields fell out of use since the KOTOR era was because blasters got stronger, meaning shields able to absorb that amount of energy would need to be more powerful. The problem with this being that shields required larger power units than could be carried and had a large radiation output.

    Energy consumption seems to be the main reason why energy shields weren’t common for the Star Wars Galaxy, and frankly it makes total sense. Energy Shields were common for star fighters and large vessels because they had the energy to use them, but to make a engine small enough to carry it on a person will be a massive under taking even with the level of technology of the Star Wars Universe.

    • @DragonHeart53
      @DragonHeart53 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      That, and it seemed that the star wars galaxy functions off of a Battery pack system. in his example of comparing the shields the commandos used to halo, spartan armors shields are powered by a fusion reactor in the suit. and Star wars doesn't have anything close to a personal level sized fusion reactor or similar means to generate power. Instead, every device and armor worn are powered off of battery cells that need to be recharged after use. That limitation also seems to be what holds back personal shields on humans or other humanoid species because of the need for larger batteries like what the droids have.

    The Handheld shield should have become part of the standard equipment of the Jedi - sword and shield is one of the most common loadouts throughout Human pre-gunpowder combat history.
    And Jedi could have utilised the Handheld shield far better than non Force sensitives to block blaster bolts, as well as compensate for a Jedi vulnerability, massed blaster fire coming in such number that not all bolts could be deflected (as illustrated during the Order 66 montage), along with Mandalorian non blaster projectiles such as flamers and missiles ect.
    And the Jedi could no doubt do some interesting tricks with Handheld shields - here's one; a Force leap forward with the body held horizontal in a prone position, _completely_ hidden behind the Shield as the Jedi swoops to the target, Sabering as they "flyby".
    Handheld shields also blocked Force lightning as a added bonus.
    And it's not like Jedi couldn't afford them - how did Gungans manage to equip their entire army with them BTW?

    • @Getsugaru
      @Getsugaru 2 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Gungan technology is heavily plasma-based, most heavily using a plasmic goo they had easy access to the large supplies of plasma found within and around the planet Naboo's core. This goo allowed them to create vast quantities of energy field technology, such as the protective "bubbles" around their underwater settlements and the various plasma orbs used in their weapons.
      TL;DR Gungans specialized in hydrostatic energy field technology, with other tech lagging behind as a result. That's why they have energy shields and plasma grenades but not landspeeders or blasters.

      That would make sense, but the Jedi seemed to be very rigid and tradition based, for example they wore robes rather than even minimal protective equipment, and didn't use blasters not even the stun variety. Considering how much it must cost to raise, train, house, and equip a jedi it'd have been smart for them to provide them with better equipment. However, it wasn't traditional to do so, so they didn't.

    • @ReshyShira

      @FalconWindblader 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ReshyShira The emphasis here is 'plate armor', not armor in general. Star Wars' equivalent of our modern day body armor is the armored suits that soldiers are already wearing, with our plate armor being their personal energy shields. Just like our body armor, their armored suits ain't meant to tank everything, they're not meant for taking punishments after punishments & coming out just fine, just enough to let combatants wearing them stay alive. On the contrary, just like how it was with our medieval plate armor, their personal shields are meant to soak in everything that they're built to take, be it energy or kinetic or both. Personal energy shields are simply no longer relevant because they eventually fail at doing what they're supposed to, just like how medieval plate armor just flat out fail at tanking even just 2 high caliber rounds.

      @e.corellius4495 ปีที่แล้ว

      plate armor didnt fall out of favor because of bullets, full plate was almost exclusively used AFTER the invention of the gun in fact. it fell out of favor due to two factors, one was advancements in artillery. better, faster, more accurate cannons rendered alot of expensive armor moot. full breast plates and cuirasses however would remain popular until the early 1700s. the second big shift was in how wars were fought as a result of those same cannon advancements. prior armies were largely comprised of nobles (the ones wearing the full plate) and Levied peasants for numbers. very few would maintain professional armies. however once cannons became "too good" most were reluctant to send their nobles nor their own workforce into battles where a cannon barrage could cripple their lands even if they won the battle, so a major shift towards using mercenary troops occurred. mercenaries were the primary fighting force of nearly every sovereign polity for nearly the full duration of the renaissance, only finally being replaced by professional trained militaries once imperialism kicked off.

    It's actually unclear in Commando armor actually HAD shields, or if the shield bar in the video game was representing an ability of the armor itself to shed heat. The shields don't get mentioned at all in the novels.

  • @ReshyShira
    @ReshyShira 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    I don't buy that someone not dying instantly from a blaster shot rather than after a couple is a good justification for not using them: Most bullets IRL miss their targets, and likely same deal with blaster bolts. There's a reason why suppressive fire rarely causes casualties, but is there to pin people down. However, being able to soak up a stray blaster shot or two is definitely worth the cost compared to needing to recruit, train, equip, and transport a new soldier to the front line to replace the loss. Modern day american military pays about 100-200k per soldier, so paying an extra 10-20k to have their survival rate increased dramatically would save a lot of money in the long run. However, you could say that it doesn't look very good on paper to give everyone a shield because the costs to replace losses aren't as readily apparent to paper pushers.

    • @Kingdomkey123678
      @Kingdomkey123678 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it costs 100k to Equip and train a soldier, adding a personal energy shield would bring that cost up to 500k.
      Militaries always go for the lowest bidder

    • @ReshyShira
      @ReshyShira ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Kingdomkey123678 Not always, that's like saying why equip armor to soldiers, if they get hit they're still likely out of the action. The armor is still important though, and a shield would be even more important. Part of this is for morale, you want your soldiers to fight with confidence. Part of it is that if say you flip the numbers around where training and equipping a typical soldier is 500k, and the energy shield is 100k, it's a drop in the bucket respectively.

    This makes a lot of sense considering military grade blasters like the Clone Trooper DC-15 Blaster Rifle has blaster bolts that fire on max settings roughly equivalent to multiple lightning bolts per shot on max power settings. Most personal shields would need insane amounts of power to function under that kind of hand held firepower. Clones are practically walking lightning bolts when it comes to their fire power. Plus add the fact that Clones were genetically enhanced to peak human physical capabilities, then trained under the most extreme of circumstances. Then suiting them in ballistic proof armor. An average clone would be a walking tank amongst most other Sci-Fi soldiers. Somewhere in between Spartans and Space Marines,

In a way it also makes stormtrooper style armor in the movie era make a bit more sense. Blasters are so damn powerful that your options for defense are a full suit of armor that protects from environmental hazards and battlefield dangers while letting you survive glancing blows and potentially making direct hits survivable or a single piece of equipment that only stops actual blaster bolts and even then you're lucky if it manages to actually absorb more than one shot before failing all while still being far and away more expensive than the whole suit of armor.

    Some lore I've read says that it's actually hazardous to your health with radiation from either the shield or power supply.
    Other stuff says that the requisite power supply is mobility impeding, though this depends on the design.
    Finally, cost and availability are likely issues. The best shields are going to be both rare and expensive.

    Dude, Dune has been my favourite novel since *loooong* before any of these sweet summer children finally got around to cracking it open and realizing how great it is. It and its 5 sequels (you heard me) are simply some of the best sci-fi literature full stop (well, the first 3 at least; Heretics and Chapterhouse aren't bad, just less good). The rise of Dune content ever since Dune (2021) has been great, but the icing on the cake has been all the people I get to say "told you so!" to now that they finally got around to actually reading it.

    Literally had this question and it brought me here. I was more or less wondering though why didn’t the Jedi use personal shields like the Spartans, I understand they didn’t want to seem like a war type race and keeping everything simple. Yet like obi and anakin they used clone armor to help against blasters. Why not use a hand held shield made of beskaar. I just don’t why the Jedi didn’t have more protection than just force tricks/lightsaber.

      War droids had polarized shields, meaning the bolts from their polarized blasters could pass through it without difficulty whilst also repelling any blaster bolt that didn't share the same polarization.

    heres something to think about
    what if you had multiple energy shields that where wrist or belt mounted? going in a Mon Cala style of defence
    and if that worked then you could possibly make more of these like bicep, shin and thigh mounted PESs
    thats 2 wrists, 2 biceps, 2 shins, 2 thighs and probably around 6-8 belt mounted PESs for about 16 shields and more if you consider using like a modern military web vest or bandoliers
    you could also add all these to some commando armor if you could find it

    I wonder when this point was reached of discarding shields. Was it during the Old Republic era and the war with the Resurgent Sith Empire? Or after? Going by SWTOR, shields are able to be used by the player classes with tank specialisations, and some tankier enemies seem to have them as well.

    In the saga edition RPG an individual droideka is only a CR 4 threat....but it can TPK a part twice it's level. The shield is a HUGE benefit but the game mechanics of having one on more than a few individual characters who don't need to be all that mobile makes it difficult to replicate the benefit for players.

    I think there's an even better answer to why clone troopers didn't adopt shields: Shielded clone troopers are more immune to light sabers. New army. New tech. The jedi needed to be able to kill their clonies in droves if push came to shove. And shields made that impossible. Sci fi militarys do this kind of stuff all the time. And if you don't buy that the jedi were as pure as they seem, it's not out of the question. Something to think about.

    Also a big Dune fan an read books from MOST all of it's Historic Periods too. It's about the only franchise with as well developed lore and just as huge book series as this franchise.
