  • Killer Mike and El-P return to Broken Record to discuss the creation of their fourth album, RTJ4, and the tumultuous world it was released into. Rick Rubin, who was present during some of the album's recording sessions at Shangri La, digs into the record's production and themes with the duo, calling the message and tone of the album "almost prophetic." They also discuss working with Pharrell and Zack de la Rocha and why they had to make a major change to a song after the album was already mastered.

After hearing that Mike rapped over Black sabbath riffs as a kid, I never knew I needed something so bad. Imagine a Sabbath x RTJ crossover album where they take the best Riffs from Iommi and spit fire over them? Ozzy would be proud, and as a metalhead/hip hop head it's a match made in heaven

This is completely inspirational. Broken Podcast, thanks for having these guys back. El-P's production has been on point since the days of Rawkus and Def Jux. Killer Mike has truly become a master of the mic as he somehow gets better than the last one on each release from solo to RTJ. RTJ4 is no doubt the most important record of 2020 and so prophetic that it's like Nostradamus was the co-producer. I'm looking forward to getting the wax preorder soon. I hope everyone's families are doing as well as possible in these trying times.

Them together as a group presents so much potential coming from a place that other great hip hop groups came from but more importantly, they offer something compleeeetely different that takes hip hop into uncharted territory...I think that as their name implies they are bold/ talented enough to defy genre with every record. If I would define how there is HOPE in RTJ (which is an incredible question to try to understand) imho- I think the hope lies in all the wisdom in their lyrics. Even while tackling age old problems that have been stagnant problems in society- the heavy insights they drop on these huge questions/issues- RTJ are slowly picking the locks. Helping us understand the roots of societal injustice and personal pain - with a jewel here & and gem there- the fact that we’re solving the riddles- slowly but surely - that creates HOPE for finally conquering all the shit that’s wrong in the world one day.
