  • I'm getting redemption on my attempt to throw and trim a big platter on the wheel in my home pottery studio. Plus, some studio updates and a new 'tool' I created for trimming. Hope you enjoy!

I've been working on wider bowl shapes, heading for the platter style and i also had a problem with trimming, i'm a once a week potter in Adult ed classes, new term starts Thursday 26th, been going since before covid, i'm trying to throw thinner walls and that was the problem, 1 of many lol, however insted of drying it just a little longer, i started trimming and my straight sided bowl started to have a flat rim round the edge, luckly i noticed before the point of no return and flipped it over. thank goodness for ribs and sponges, i got the straight top edge back, Im going to try and as youve done in the video, keep everything crossed. Ive just found your channel so am working my way through your videos. thankyou

I’m so excited for you and so happy you found my channel! My pottery teacher used to say “it’s easy to throw a bowl, but it’s very hard to throw a good bowl” lol. Glad your class is starting up again soon, we all just have to get the reps in to get better. I think once you are bitten by the clay bug there is no going back 😂 Have fun!!

Sooo, I’ve made a few large plates (platters) . Thrown on the wheel last Sunday, cut them off, covered and today (Saturday) they didn’t come off clean - where I’ve cut them, off the wheel, the clay has stuck to the bottoms on various areas 🤷‍♀️ but do come off the bat. What a??? Gaaad

I hope you understand lol - I have 2 more that I will try tomorrow and send you a pic if you want?

Hey… I’m not sure I’m really understanding, what kind of bat are you using, is it a plaster bat? If so you shouldn’t cut it off at all, just allow them to dry enough and they should pop off on their own. If you have a pic though do send, I’m curious what you are seeing happen.

@ unfortunately they did not make it 😢 - tomorrow is a brand new day

But I will take a pic of my bats - they kinda look like countertops reused (I bought them off of a potter by me)

Platter is wonderful, congrats!!! I am wondering where you bought your tool holder? The green one that you use when throwing. Looks like green grass or when you do a floral arrangement it is called a frog. It is so great to keep your tools close and easy to pick up. Thank you, Lisa

Than you so much I really appreciate that! I have an Amazon link to the grass tool holder in the video description. It’s actually a drying rack for baby bottles. If you don’t do Amazon I would look in the baby section of any retailer in your area. Hope that helps!
