Opera buffs will hate hate this, however most opera singers wish they could sound like this. David Phelps is literally one of the best tenors on the planet.
How can both statements be true- that opera fans would dislike this and that opera singers would like to sing it thus way? In any case, the first is true. It's awful. He has great ability, but his voice is not suited to this material, and he either lacks or chooses not to use proper technique. The performance is highly contrived. He uses amplification. Ugh.

I truly agree that this is a great voice, however, no opera singer wants to sound like this. This is a great voice for pop, but a very poor voice in opera.
Name one opera singer who would want to sing like this. As an opera educator, opera composer, chorus master and one-time operatic baritone, I am happy to contradict you.
His version is so different than Pavarotti's. They can't be compared, both are masterpieces with different styles and interpretation. The only thing I can say is that this man is so INCREDIBLY TALENTED and his voice is totally mastered, refined technique, feelings. OMG. I can't describe how GREAT his singing is!!!!

I agree... Pavarotti was in a league all of his own, and this song was in his native language, so of course he was the Grande Maestro. He was the King of high C's. David is all in a league of his own as well. No matter what either of them sing/sang, it was truly beautiful.

Actually he’s a classically trained (opera)tenor.
When David performed this officially for the first time in Orlando, FL, he actually STUNNED the audience into SILENCE for the first 4 seconds after the last note, until they then EXPLODED out of their seats with wild cheering, whistling and clapping, I know--I was there!

I had never heard of David Phelps and I ran across this . I didn't know a word he said but I knew he was blessed of God. I then researched and found him to be one of the finest voices in the world. Purely my opinion only.
We just heard this last night in the little town of Talledega, AL and I was definitely stunned. He definitely received a standing ovation.

I was with my grandmother Lee Glover she took me to see David Phelps and the gather vocal band multiple times over the years.. sadly cancer took her a few years ago..I cherish those moments with her and know one day I will see her again.. miss you momom your grandson Michael❤
Exceptional! He sings it conversationally, with real pauses and emphasizing particular words and phrases. And he's not afraid of being delicate if need be.

I was lucky enough to see David Phelps perform this during a Gaither concert, and I mean I cried almost the entire time, it was amazing, you could hear a pen drop in that arena
David Phelps does not get enough credit for his God given gift. He sings with such passion. One of my favorites. Thank you Mr. Gaither for featuring these videos.
A little "gospel" technique into a beautiful classic. You don't have to be "trained" in opera to be "filled up" from this performance. Clearly, Mr. Phelps has spent his life performing and blessing people with his gift. It looks effortless. No need to compare to other performers. They are all wonderful.

Best male vocalist in the world today...any genre. I have seen him live 10 times now, with several of those from the front row. Going again this coming Friday in Virginia. Josh Groban is really good, Andrea Bocelli is great but none of them compare to this mans amazing talent.
The trouble is again though, comparing Roses, to Orchids to Irises... each has their own beauty, a God given beauty.

IMO, David executes every note with a heavenly essence, while Pavarotti delivers a song about heavenly love. I love them both so much, I couldn't love either more than the other.

Pavarotti DID it better. This rendition is a slaughter of Puccini's master work. David is not an operatic tenor. This is NOT opera. And you are not God to know if Pavarotti could match David's heart and humility.
Well, this makes about the 50th time I've heard David sing that song. I will probably hear it again 50 more times. David, you are one of the greatest singers in this world. God has given you a great gift. Now we are being blessed to hear you praise God with your music. Keep it up. I can't type enough words to express our enjoyment of your music.
So I just went to listen to Pavarotti Nessum Dorma again. Now back to David. Pavarotti is very good, but David's rendition was so heartfelt, soulful, beautiful. Brought me to tears. David when I hear you sing, my heart grows so big with joy. I can imagine you singing with the angels to glory of Yah!
I totally agree with what you said. David sings with so much heartfelt emotion and love He touches my very soul with his beautiful GOD-given voice. He is the best I have ever heard or seen. His love for what he does shines through so brightly.
It's possible David does this song because he loves it as much as we do, and he Can. He could have gone to the Opera House but he prefers God's house, like we do. He does it beautifully.
They are different types of tenors. David Phelps would be considered a dramatic Tenor, like Bocelli.
That is the only comparison you should make. The way that Pavarotti is singing is much more difficult. Bocelli is somewhat a blend of their mixed voice registers, but Pavarotti sings with a very heavy Chest-y sounding mixed voice. It is the heavily concentrated head voice/mixed voice that makes David sound so dramatic. And he is the master of it. And yes, he truly is anointed however, the way that Pavarotti is singing, Simply is dramatic in a different way. And it may take you years to be able to interpret the emotions going on, kind of like a fine-Wine acquired taste.

this is just my opinion as a trained opera singer also myself who sings other music also. The opinion of most opera people is to sing a song directly as written and make your voice sound 30 years older than you are. david phelps on the other hand is actually using the technique which the italian word implies. Opera literally means open mouth or throat. if anyone is trained to correctly sing in our age it is this man. and he isn't vain and singing for himself.

David is a coloratura tenor so his ability to tell the story being told in this dramatic aria is quite beautiful and believable. His vocal ability comes along once or twice in a life time and it makes me happy to know I can go to You Tube and listen to him anytime I want.

I saw him perform this live at a gaither concert. I was 8 months pregnant with my eldest and she danced and jumped and squirmed the whole performance. It was simply magical! He is such a talented man.

Wow, I just never get tired of hearing David sing. I know that Pavarotti is a legend but I prefer David's interpretation of this classic. I get chills listening to this every single time, God bless you David! Your mastery and control is superb, and the fact you're singing in a foreign language is not lost on me either. Pavarotti’s performance of this blows my mind and was the only one that truly moved me every time I heard it... until I heard this. Phelps is truly something special!
You should check out a few more renditions of Nessum Dorma then, Jussi Björling, Corelli, Kraus, there are many fine interpretations as good, and a few better than even Pavarotti’s

My wife and I have seen him live three times, one of those times he did this song. We got our picture taken with him as well, he wasn't feeling good and was nursing his voice, but was still SO gracious to all those who wanted a photo with him. Awesome voice on this brother.
I thought Oh Holy night was the performance he would be known for, but then I heard this! An opera voice as beautiful as any on a Bill Gaither show stage. It's angelic. Imagine what heaven will sound like with perfect angelic voices like this praising God!
I remember seeing David in concert when he first started with Gaithers. I remember, at first, being disappointed that I didn't get to hear Jonathon Pierce (Gaithers then-tenor); but then I fell in love with David's voice and have been since. What set's David apart is that he gets better and better, unlike most professional singers who reach a plateau. What an inspiration!
After seeing David perform this live last month, I was in tears. It was even better than I could even imagine. It’s amazing how he continues to hit these notes year after year, God bless you David!

Top to bottom, his head and chest are fully connected. It produces resonance, and the dark and light part of the voices come out in full brilliance. Hearing voices like this without any aid of technology is incredible.

It is absolutely disgusting to me how unknown and unpopular David Phelps is to the world. He has 1,000,000% earned his place in the music world and this performance is concrete evidence of that. He’s one of the best tenors of all time, if not THE best tenor of all time.

While I know this is not up to what professionals see as "Opera voice". I think this version gives it more of a human feeling. Like a move version more real.
Spinto tenor with power on the middle register, high notes are not taken easily. Nice voice and amazing modern interpretation
David is not a spinto tenor, he is a light lyric tenor.
He was trained as a Rossini tenor.

@@asimioneseioctavian in this performance I agree with you, but listen to some of his high notes compilations. He has great ease and control in the 5th octave, even up to the E5 (in his younger years).
His "usual singing voice" (heard in "no more night" or "oh holy night") is pretty soft and light, he just likes to add some weight and depth to his tone.

My favourite rendition of "Nessun dorma" It is the best operatic aria for a tenor like him. God gave him a talent in singing and writing songs.

I wanted to tell anyone reading this something really important.
One day we are all going to stand before God. If you have ever lied, stolen, used God’s name in vain (omg) which is called blasphemy , hated someone (which God consideres murder) or done other things that are against His law ( the Ten Commandments), He sees you as a lying, thieving, blasphemous, murderer. He will judge us, and because we have all broken His law, we ALL deserve hell.
But because He loves us, He became a human about two thousand years ago, lived without sinning, and died a terrible death He didn’t deserve because of us. Three days later He rose from the dead and one day He is coming back.
We all deserve the ultimate punishment (hell). But God loves us so much that He took the punishment on Himself.
We broke Gods law, Jesus paid the fine.
If you repent from your sins ( sincerely apologize for breaking His law and turn away from doing it anymore) and trust in Him and Him only, your punishment will be paid for, you will get eternal life in heaven, and you will no longer go to hell.
I’m not telling you this to judge you. The thought of you going to hell terrifies me. I don’t want anyone to go without hearing this wonderful news.

There is more heart in this rendition than any other version I have heard. More human. Incredibly good!
Anyone who can hear this and find fault is an idiot. No one sings like the opera tenors and that's their distinction. But this in it's way is equally rare, unique, and absolutely beautiful. It is a joy to hear David Phelps sing.
His performances are so full of life and emotion, such a spirit of excellence. The immortal Iron Fist sings!! Lol.
I'm usually pretty snobby about people singing opera in their own style but.. this is good.
Like, a lot of non opera people have put their spin on Nessun Dorma. Sting's version is pretty odiferous, among others, but Mr Phelps sang this with enough technique and dynamic range that i'll tip my hat for sure. Best non opera version by a long shot.
How beautiful is that... I have no idea what he was singing (words), but it brings tears to my eyes. It's so beautiful. I have heard opera singers renditions and David holds his own.

My Grandmother(Mommom) recently passed away due to cancer and I can Rember growing up she used to take me and siblings to see him and gather vocal band.. some of the best memories I ever had.. I know she is in heaven singing with the heavenly angels may u live in paradise Mommom I miss u so much and will see u agian someday!
