I ran it as a last minute charity entry for Independent Age, first having run the GNR 41 years ago, Hahaha, and the last time was 18 years ago. Half the size of runners then. These crowds 2022 were Awesome. Thank you all for getting me over the finish line. There to enjoy and 3.29hrs was just the ticket for wonderful experience. Thanks Andy for great vlog. I did that run!!! Tears now reliving it. And gonna do next year's GNR when I am 70 years old. 😁🏃👍

I'm a big fan of the GNR(it helps that for me it's just up the road). I love that the whole 13 miles of it has people on the road cheering you on and giving you all the support you need(not to mention sweets). And for me last weekend I got myself a new PB of 1.42, very pleased with that.

I was there running on Sunday as well and this is such a brilliant representation of what it was like. I didn't quite have your insane levels of energy, but iI approached it just like you Andy; get in with the Oggy Oggy Oggy's, high five the kids, drink the beer. The event wasn't without its niggles but as a participator's experience it was up there and I will remember it for a long time! Every local I spoke to was lovely as well and I even got given £15 after in the pub by some locals for my charity!

Great memories watching this video - my sister and I were running that day. It was on a completely different scale from any event I’d done before, so some of it was a bit overwhelming - but with more experience since, I’m eager to try it again (didn’t get in this year, sadly).

Yeah it was insane!! Difficult to convey the magnitude of the event on my little gopro as it was a huge festival. Really enjoyed it!
Great vlog Andy. It was my 1st GNR & I came from the U.S & it was definitely worth the trip. Good luck in the Amsterdam Marathon; next up for me is the NYC Marathon in November. Great community support for the GNR runners.

Wow, I've never done a race with 60,000 runners. It must have been absolutely epic, everyone said this atmosphere was something else! Congrats on your race!
It was ridiculous. Such a lovely distance too, half marathons are fast becoming my fave kind of race. Atmosphere was incredible and if you can, get your hat in the ring for next year!

It's phenomenal - I actually don't think this video does it anywhere near justice. You just have to totally embrace the GNR as its sooo crowded!
I did it for the first time in 2021 and immediately bought a membership to guarantee a place for the next 3 years. Absolutely brilliant event!

Great vid mate. I was so close to booking GNR but opted for the Big Half a couple of weeks ago. Although I am doing the Amsterdam Half! So maybe I'll catch up with you over there, I'll plan to spectate the marathon.

My son is doing this in a coupe of weeks he's done lots of 10ks and has done a couple of 15ks he's played football from tge age of 4 and goes to the gym so I'm sure he can do it

Nice one Andy. A really great vlog showing how much you enjoyed the day. I've never run it and now I think I must, but not for a PB attempt as the course seemed crowded the whole way. You'll have to give my local Reading Half a try as that finishes in the football stadium.
Id be very interested in Reading! What time of year is it usually?
It's 2nd April 2023, which is the normal time of year and always about 3 or 4 weeks before the London marathon, so used as a warm up event by many runners. I've entered it again, as I run it most years.
OK mate I'll add it to the maybe list - I haven't got much planned next year apart from Hampton Court place half in March which should be fun!

How did you manage to sing and run? 🤣 having done the amended route last year this was my first OG GNR and I loved it, I've bought the membership so there hopefully might still be beer along the way by the time I get there next time! It was a super day, so much support, incredibly hot though!
Yes it was a toasty one wasn't it - however I've heard some years it has been roasting! Absolutely loved it - and I'm still buzzing from it a week later! Incredible experience wasn't it ❤️

Honestly it was amazing. So many runners and supporters the atmosphere was electric!
It's my local run I ran the first one in 81 and haven't missed a year yet 2022 was my 41st it's always like you showed it and you are right everyone should do the Great North Run at least once...see you again next year?

Did it last year but didn’t like the new route, glad it’s back to South Shields. I didn’t get in this year but went up as my husband runs it every year 🏅I also ran in 10 years ago and didn’t find it that hilly, great video

It really is a unique event. I've run it as a 'serious' run, and also dressed as a flower whilst recovering from concussion. My advice would be go for the fun option every time!

One concern: were there bananas? We saw the medal and shirt but getting the banana is the whole point, surely.
You'd be like an adopted son up there with a shearer shirt up there. I actually can't remember. There may well have been, but I didn't see any!!!

I wanted sub 1:50 but I faded after 10 miles and ended up with 1:53. But the experience was amazing and it doesn't matter about a PB. Nice New balance top. I need to find one like that
Well done Chris, the 10 mile wall is brutal at a half marathon, well done for smashing through it. I got that jacket from TK Maxx so have a look you may find it! Picked it up for my cold winter runs which are coming quicker than I'd like.👍🏻
Looked like a fun race, but congested from beginning to end. Your time was good considering that fact. Did you start in a really far back/later wave?
Yes it was very congested, the easiest part believe it or not was the first 1/2k. Would love a good crack at a PB uf I started much further on, but started 25 mins after the gun! Some people didn't cross the line until 1200, mass start was 1045!

Hey. I know this video is a little old now, I managed to land a ballot place for this year. So looking forward to it. I’ve sold a kidney and have a hotel for the night. Lol. How do I get back to the start after the finish? Are there buses, or will I need to pay for a taxi back? I suppose I could book a hotel near the finish instead and do it that way round.
There are a lot of road closures on the day, best bet is the Metro from South Shields into one of the Newcastle stations depending on where you’re staying

Hi Andrew - last year we did the opposite and tried to leave South shields afterwards, it was carnage. Queues for public transport and on the roads. Depending on your finish time you may get lucky and beat the queues, but the best bet is the metro, its just a bit of a squeeze! Unless you fancy running another half marathon back to your hotel 🤣

GNR is a bit of a ‘Marmite’ race. You either love it or hate it.
I can see why some runners would not like it, proximity to others being one of the most common reasons! Also this race comes with a lot of hype, some will feel underwhelmed afterwards. But not many!
My first time running it this year, I did it in 1:47 and I’m pretty proud with that considering it’s my first half marathon race!! Incredible atmosphere I had such a blast!!❤️

Yeah if you're in the middle or the back then it's very tough to run in a straight line!
