Agreed. I have an '83 with its original 305 engine and transmission still regularly hauling heavy loads as needed. Credit to the designers and builders of this truck because it still works fine after 41 years, most of them spent sitting out in all weather with minimal maintenance.

@@madcowusa4277 right my first truck was an 85 blazer, got it when it was 18 years old, sadly I got run off the road after 5 years, was totaled outside of oil changes all I ever did was fix a vacuum leak and the window fell out of track, everything worked, no leaks. Best truck I ever had. Hope to get back to a classic one day

So much character though. These old things have spirit. Real machines. Modern cars and trucks are not the same. No soul. They have been fully integrated with technology and will absolutely not be in the road 40 years from now. Nor will anyone want them to be, you know ?

I had an 87 Monte Carlo SS with the 305 and currently have an 87 Iroc-Z with the 305 and they are dog slow, but the torque makes them feel ballsy somehow. You won't be going very fast, but the way they lean back and push you into your seat is its own kind of fun

I can confirm it's actually faster than you think. A lot of the C10's (especially mine, 1983 Chevy Cheyanne / C10) use a Cable for the Speedometer, and with my experience, has read 15 - 25 Miles more than what is shown. So when you think your going 10 MPH, you could actually be going 24 MPH.
Replacing the Speedometer helps, but they somehow just goes out real easy.

Not bad for an ol 305. 3.73 gears, headers should wake that truck up. Any tuned Quadrajet will be better than a Holley or Edelbrock on a mild or street sbc. Another thing that will shave some time off right now....run your vacuum advance to a full vacuum source on the manifold...not the carb. May then need to adjust the timing and idle. But she will run like a scalded dog lol!

I honestly believe an equally stock 350 wouldn't have done much if any better given the weight and gears.
      I will say this...
My folks had an '83 G20 conversion van with LE9, T700, 3.08 gears. When at the Capitol Raceway with racer friends back in '90 I talked my dad into taking it out to see what it'd turn. Clicked off a 16.10 on a one and done run. All that was done was a Crane HMV 260, recalibrated Q-jet, and 2-1/4" duals. 305's don't do bad.

@@CSXT8250 That's a pretty sweet time for a 305 and a heavy van! Had a 84 C10 LWB in H.S. with a high mileage stock oil burning 305, TH350, eddy 600, and 2.73s. Swapped to a used stock 350 with 60,000 miles. Off the line the 350 had a slightly better punch, but acceleration was the same. Burnouts were better!!!

350 Chevrolet's are proven motors. Truly an outstanding, versatile engine that does everything well. Then GM really hit the ball out of the park when designing the "LS" platform. The 305 had to live in the shadow of it's big brother the 350. You are correct. The only real difference in driving between the two is a slightly noticed dip in torque from the 05. When built up a good rule of thumb is the powerband raised 400-500 rpm. Horsepower, contrary to popular opinion stays very close. In fact, if you built both to identical healthy street specs.. If you drove both not knowing, you may swear the 305 seems quicker cause when you're winding it out as its still pulling strong well past 6,000. You can build a very strong cast piston 305 (that will embarrass many) ON A BUDGET but do be aware that it is a black art. The 305 is going to love more generous gearing to get up in it's powerband just as a 5.0 Mustang would. Another misconception regarding factory casting SBC heads is that a larger intake valve is going to do some miracle for power. Simply not true. What's going on inside the port is far more important. Your carb 305's had an excellent head for making really good power. They are a double quench combustion chamber and 53cc. The "601 & 801" castings. Do a web search on porting "601" heads. Read some of the threads. 1.84" valves are fine. Opening the intake valve to 1.94 is not necessary. Port for velocity and that's where the power and response is. Smaller bore of a 305 is more thermally efficient than the 4.00 inch bore of a 350. Period. In layman's terms you can go higher on compression with pump gas. Taking advantage of this by upping the compression goes toward reclaiming the diminished torque lost to the 350. Keeping quench distance to .038"-.040" but no more is critical. Keeping camshaft lift in the .450" lift area seems to be a "G spot" with factory SBC head castings. Ignore the .500-.600" lift stuff. There are "Lift Rules" camshafts available for dirt track racers that fit the bill. 305 (as well as 350's) really love 108-109° lobe separation cams. Using a 230-ish degree 108° LSA .450" cam with Rhoads lifters in a 10.3:1 compression blueprinted to spec 305 with ported "601" heads, of course with a good intake and headers will make one very, very mean and nasty little motor that will scre-eeeam to 7,000. I know this is a long post but... A little bit of 411 you outta kno.

1981 short bed 305. Its slow but i don't care. Just don't care about a lot of speed. I just cruise in it. It has just the right amount of v8 power it needs, so don't care about "ls swapping". It has dual fuel tanks. So even if i ls swap it i have to delete that system and just use one tank. I'll just leave that stuff original. I don't care about burnouts but i'll do a powerslide every now and then😊😊
