Love that you share your knowledge and experience! Most of these things people will learn the hard way but it's much easier if you have someone to guide you in your learning!
Clark, Windy shows graphical representations over a timeline for the ECMWF, GFS, NAM and ICON. There are buttons in the lower righthand of the screen to toggle between the different models. In addition, if you bring up the Windy forecast for your area, Windy allows you to compare the forecasts for ECMWF, GFS, NAM, ICON and MATEOBLUE all on one screen. No need for you to go to the WindFinder site just for a comparative model. Windy also has a hurricane wind accumulation feature which allows you to look at the cumulative wind over a 12 Hr, 24 Hr, 3 day, 5 day or 10 day projection period. This can be done across the different models as well, and gives you a good idea of the area of impact expected for each model. Windy also has a hurricane tracker feature that shows the path and strength to date and to help you make decisions. Love your videos, and fair winds!
I use the free version of Windy. In the lower right corner you can select which model to look at, both EU and US plus a couple more with higher resolution but I don't think they cover outside the US. I love that you can cycle through different displays also, waves, wind and if your doing your own assessment of where a storm may go, PRESSURE. Where is the eye, where is the high located etc. For everything else I just use NOAA National Hurricane Center. Good to hear you weathered Elsa well. We were on the West side of Florida when the predictions were about 5 days away from us. We sailed to Key Largo and hid in the mangroves. Turned out well, barley noticed the wind, bit of rain.
I wrapped the sail cover with line, took down the dodger and Bimini. Extra dock lines and then the storm turned and nothing happened. Better safe than sorry.
Great info. Thanks for sharing. The last clip of gathering rainwater for laundry through a sieve, I thought, OMG, how many gallons of good laundry water have I tossed out after a storm. The storm rolled through our area with lots of flooding. Trying to learn all I can for when I return to sea. Again….thanks.
Mother Nature provides bliss and occasionally terror. Ive been at sea during hurricanes and its treacherous and precarious. Planning is everything, unless you get stuck out there. Run to the lee is plan B. Try to stay ahead of and out of the storm. Be safe you guys.
Clark it’s very interesting and kind of new knowledge for me ) been to Cuba when I was a kid and know hurricanes - now I am in St. Petersburg , Russia and I plan to get a boat and to go to Caribbean.... probably next year Thanks! Valuable info Studying Emily’s 5 knots video so far )))
We decided to stay put in Florida for Elsa and it ended up being the right decision. We did have a plan B of heading into some Mangroves if the hurricane had changed direction
We rode it out in the slip in Hilton Head. Hunter 38. Not sure I'd do that again, quite a ride even though it was downgraded by the time it hit Port Royal Sound it was spawning tornados one went by up the other side of the creek from us.
@@martinwalker5049 wow! This was my first Hurricane and it horseshoed around us. We got 1 nasty rain band the day before it hit, but was much calmer the next day as the eye went west of us. We are near Stuart
Thanks for sharing. Very informative, even if we don’t get hurricanes up here in Norway, we can still get serious winds and it’s good to see some perspective and get some advice.
With the shifting Jet Stream you never know how the weather patterns will shift. You just might one day get to enjoy such weather too. Though, I do not wish that on anyone having been through them, along with Cyclones. May the Gods always shine upon you. :). Could not ignore a reply since my best friend lives in Oslo, and I have many University friends from Norway. :) Sorry Clark, to jump in on one of your posters…..
I never thought about the bottom of the hull and making your boat ready to move in an instant incase it’s needed. And then it made me think of other things to prepare for. Do you think having a checklist that you could reference pre-hurricane season and maybe a checklist that you go through just prior to the arrival of hurricane might make things less stressful? At least that’s my thought and I’m wondering if you think that would be something practical to have? Thank you again for a wonderful video. I value your opinion and input and always look forward to your videos.
Having used pre-flight checklists, and having check lists in the military, I favor checklists. I just used Clark and Emily’s video to add to a revamped check list for storms. Though am currently landlocked, I am adding to my binder for my return to see. I agree with Clark though as thinking on your feet once you “OWN” the knowledge is also a good way to go.
@@theresedignard4267 🤔 actually there are more reasons for using checklists on flights - not just for safety to make sure each and every point is checked especially in dangerous situations BUT to keep a stability of nerves as well. That’s to give a psychological value of soothing the nerves in critical moments by providing a form of security - assuming that this would be a great help especially for Emily as „a list person“ and furthermore lacking some 20+ years of experience compared to Clark as he described their stressful situation during that day. Food for thought to match not just Captain‘s needs but crew members as well 🙄
If you hadn't gotten sick would you have sailed south to Grenada or other some place south of the equator? That seems to be the recommended tactic for most sailing channels when they sail around the Caribbean.
Great information, glad it was an easy ride this time. Has Marina Tropical sorted out it's issues and reopened yet? Which Marina do you use while in Luperon and why?
We don't use a marina. We rent a mooring because the growth here is so strong our anchor chain would be a horrible mess if we used it here. The boat yard is still closed down. There is talk of allowing tourist boats to soon be able to continue work and launch but there is always talk.
@@Clarks-Adventure Thanks for the update on The Marina Tropical - the normal Social Media one would expect to have current and accurate information is badly lacking.
First off, glad it was benign and you guys made it through safely. Secondly so glad you dont mention Predictwind! So many other youtube sailors shill that service they get for free, and either use it to sail into the worst weather possible for clicks, or they are horrible at using it, or it just sucks, i cant decide lol, most likely a combination of the 3. But in all cases the bad weather sailing has increased with Predictwind usage. I wouldnt be surprised if they hadnt contacted you already or they probably will soon after doing a weather related vid, or maybe they dont want you because you would be honest! We will see! Third a bit disappointed you dont have Temptress in ready to go state, i know health concerns and staying in 1 spot for long periods makes us laid-back, but you are in hurricane zone even though Luperon is good safe place. Glad you made it through and stay safe, and be prepared!
Luperon is the only safe place for a long way. If things were really bad we could tie to the mangroves. So if all your plans are "stay here" you stay. Bottom is clean now.
Really great video. If the hurricane changed course towards you and bleep hit the fan what would you do? I mean if two boats nearby got lose and starting hitting other boats and waves got high even in mooring area. Would you start engines and head for shore? Jump in dingy and head for shore? Or start engine and get away from other boats? Or just wait until last second or an actual collision? Ever been in that situation or is it rare because most moorings in good spots?
S storm hit here hard last season (the one that hit us harder in the Turks and Caicos) that tested several moorings to failure. So, they should be strong now. Have to play it by ear. Most likely we would take the hit using fenders. We are way stronger then most boats so they will probably take the most damage. Just can't say what would be the right response till the need arises. Can't do this on a mooring but I've dodged dragging boats while at anchor by motoring left or right til they dragged by.
A good day my name is Ray I had commented on a video before thanks for answering anyway I'm still thinking of buying a boat but I know hurricane season's coming unfortunately I'm still single so what are the chances if I bought a boat of me being able to get someone to help crew with me during hurricane season
@@Clarks-Adventure good afternoon I've been watching lots of TH-cam videos on sailing I've never sailed before which I think I said earlier I got like a ton of questions is there anyway you could direct message me or I'd direct message you is I don't want to jump into something and find out I can't do it or dislike please let me know thank you your videos are awesome have a great day
knowing the storm patterns went a tad bit further south than normal last year, knowing the world wide weather pattern is highly unusual this year, I'd calculate that into the hurricane planning and dig a little deeper into a hurricane hole or further south of the hurricane belt. just a bit of food for thought. hopefully nothing bad will happen, but strange is already happening with our weather, the glacier affect at an accelerated rate, as forecasted 40 plus years ago. history of the world, part 3 more recently known as global warming. I'm not sure what they called the same natural phenomena prior to the days (decades, millennia's ) leading up to the days of Noah.
