Damn dude, whoever you got to shoot this is breathing REAL heavy into the camera... almost like their nervous as hell to be in the same room as all this awesomeness...
I was just joking around, I was actually shooting this video - can confirm, "too fat" is definitely the reason, also being hot as hell in there didn't help
Hey Alan, I've been following your greatest program ever created and I'm seeing really good results so far. My grip strength has improved drastically. I'm now able to do my 5x5 deadlifts with a double overhand grip. Cheers!
I was hoping you would being invited to their gym and even mentioned it a few times in their live chats. Great Q and A sessions and glad they finally let you touch a bar.
i see a beautiful personal trainer that i use to work with and all i ever saw her do was sumo deadlifts and squats. she had the nicest ass i ever seen just amazing and it takes all the meatheads out of sync when she is working out. so I'm guessing that what the ladys want on us too. it just sucks for me cause i keep hitting my right knee cap on the way down. any suggestions?
Vertical shins, wow what a great tip. I've watched a hundred of these videos (99 by Alan) and never picked up on that. Also, great tip about pushing feet into floor, not pulling with back. Huge difference in what you can pull with that simple trick.I'm 6'3" and 6' of that is legs, so conventional I am fighting my knees in the way, with sumo, my legs have a place to get out of the bars way. Off to the gym to practice these tips. Thanks dudes!!
For my proportions I feel the sumo deadlift is 100x more comfortable for me. What annoys me is when people try to discredit the lift for being sumo instead of conventional lol
They say it's the path of the bar and its shorter, blah blah. It's funny cause they wouldn't give the same kind of chit to someone who close grip benches 315, or wide grip benches 315. Both can be equally impressive to the average person right? 315lbs is 315lbs right? I personally think it's stupid. This is coming from a guy thats pulled 410 conventional and 405 sumo. Keep in mind I'm 5'11 and 155lbs. Weight is weight, it doesn't lie. In my opinion switch between conventional and sumo regularly
@@David-lu4th There's a a specific standard in powerlifting as to how wide your bench can be. As a general rule people accept it because thats the rule. People see sumo as a nearly entirely different lift. Which frankly it is. When you have people skirting the lift in competition-- it rubs people the wrong way, because mechanically Sumo is easier and the overwhelming majority of people will pull higher numbers sumo than conventional. Just as a little aside strongman explicitly bans sumo pulling because it is a different lift.
Thank you folks. Have been alternating between conventional and sumo as it is easier on my older hip joints. And as the saying goes. Practice makes perfect.
Thanks again for this video Allen. I hurt my back about 18 months ago and tweaked it pretty good . I’m just getting back to the gym and deadlifting . Some of the tips I saw In this video and the part 2 really got me back to some basics . After a herniated disc , I’m three weeks back in the gym and pulling 315 for reps pain free. It really is cool how free content like this can really help . Before my injury I was over 500lbs double overhand sumo , and doing 405 for reps so a late intermediate probably , but I’m looking forward to hitting some advanced numbers
I did sumo for the first time yesterday and it felt REALLY easy when you've been doing conventional. I just searched for it now because I'm just intrigued, but I don't think I'll be doing sumo lol
Alan is mobile as fuck! I really appreciate this vid, not because I don't know how to sumo pull but cause it reminded me to do it more! specially today, Deadlift day
Love your channel man, if I ever end up living in the Sac area I'm joining your gym for sure so I can listen to some At The Gates and TRAIN UNTAMMMMMEEEEEDDDDDD
After years of only doing stiff legged deadlift, swithing to sumos is challenging, not used to bending the knees as much. Also scared to scrape my chin which is less likely with stiff legged deads
Nice video. Note: Can the cameraman be a bit more behind the camera or smth, cause throughout video you can hear him breathing kinda heavy, putting my focus off :P
Brilliant stuff. ----- 2 Questions though 1. you mention no lifting in running shoes (been looking at lifting shoes but yet to commit) -- I have "flat" feet, overpronation.. so on. I've been trying to correct this with numerous exercises and stretches as I heard it is just a muscular imbalance. I have orthotics in my shoes. Will lifting bare foot be better or worse for me? 2. I'm currently doing 531. 4 days a week as stated, 1-2 days are cardio/mobility days. I've been learning how to clean with the help of your videos on one of those cardio days. When would be a good time to use sumo's? should I practice them with a light weight when I do my cleans to get technique in and then try them once I start to slow down on 531. Thanks again for the epic content
Not a pro just a bro but lifting barefoot is better then running shoes cheap route and completely functional would be wrestling shoes or converse I just bought nike's romelos 2 and I'm completely in love with them it's like wearing magnets for the floor I'm pretty positive I've seen Alan wear them in some of his videos too
I think Marks blurb on GPP is spot on. You can specialize without over doing it. He benched himself into elbow pain and now works pretty hard on alleviating it and working on his mobility or so I gather from his social media stuff. That's why he's the people's coach. These three and Omar Asschest make up the best people's coaching team we could ask for.
Takeaways for me - Shins straight compared to conventional deadlift - Point your feet out to let the bar clear your knees on the way up - Sink your hips low, raise your chest and pull the slack out of the bar. Hips should be lower than Shoulders before the lift. - Breathe in before the lift and tighten your abs
I think from a day to day perspective if you need strength to lift something heavy from the floor the sumo is more applicable to lifting objects in real life especially heavy awkward things.
Alan... i like doing 11 reps with conventional and 4 heavy reps with about 11.4% of my body weight. will I get my bench press up if i each chicken breast or chicken thigh??
Hi Alan, the shins are flush with the barbell in the starting position yes? I know from a conventional deadlift video of yours that you started with the shins roughly 1 inch away from the barbell and then pushed the shins to the barbell before executing the lift..
If you are a conventional deadlifter, would you say sumo is a good tool for a deload week? Seems like it's easier on the back than conventional and easier on the knees than the negative of a squat.
Sumo isn’t cheating. Personally, I have a nagging knee injury and pulling sumo doesn’t irritate that injury. I can pull 10x more weight with no pain than I can with conventional and lots of pain. My knee starts acting up around 250 when I do traditional. Pulling over 425 and there’s ZERO pain in my knee. Stop telling people sumo is cheating. Because I promise if you’re a conventional deadlifter, I can take your 1rm, make you pull sumo and you won’t budge it. It’s not an easier movement, it’s a different movement. You’d expect somebody like mark bell or Allan thrall to know this shit.
i'm trying to learn this lift and the bar keeps riding my shins to the point where i'm bleeding. gonna start wearing sleeves but should the bar make contact with my shins at all coming up and down? what's the bar path supposed to be?
For some strange reason I get lower back pains from doing Sumo Deadlifts. These typically come the next day and last about a week. There must be something I'm doing wrong? I normally do vanilla deadlifts and even after hard sessions I don't experience this type of long lasting aching pain. Can anyone drop some advice?
Probably built better for conventional. There is a video somewhere where they show you how to measure your limbs etc to see which style suits you. Most shorter people do conventional where taller people tend to do sumo I find as they can utilise their leverages and limbs length better
tried to sumo yesterday, getting a sharp pain about halfway(3-4inches. between the top of my hip bone and midline of my torso. any random internet doctor ideas? conventional no problem, squats no problem, only in sumo and even with relatively light weight. trying to get form down with 135 before i even try and build on that
Chris Witek stick to conventional. You might just not be built to pull sumo which is rare. You might want to ask a professional about it. For now just stick to conv tho
When I sumo my back is rounded. I push through the floor with a stance similar to silent mike but toes pointing out more, i dont feel it in my lower back, im guessing my core is weak as shit?( never trained it directly ever; been lifting almost 3 years)
Treat it as it's own lift slowly build up and get the form correct before basing it off your conventional 1rm. If you deadlift 405 conventional you can't jump straight into a 3x5 sumo workout at 315lbs
I'm a female and don't want my upper body getting more developed than it already is. I started pulling sumo for leg and glute development. Is it worth my time for hypertrophy gains and if it is, what rep range should i be doing them in? I hear 8-12 reps is best for hypertrophy, but some say that's too many reps for deads.
I do sumo because I can't do conventional deadlift. There, I said it.
@Slevin Kolebra Definitely not by IPF, and I don't care what anyone else said. It's legit.
Same, my back is broken... so I pull heavy sumos 💪🏾
cameraman is about to have a stroke. it's like watching a snuff film heavy breathing
I was thinking the same thing
Sounds like Darth Vader holding the camera
Yup. Ruins the watching experience.
creative username bruuuh i thought it was me breathing lmao
fucking darth vader filming this shit
Damn dude, whoever you got to shoot this is breathing REAL heavy into the camera... almost like their nervous as hell to be in the same room as all this awesomeness...
thrre probably trying not to pass out because mark bell smells so bad
its mark numb nuts. hes got a wire
lol. It's Mark's bro Chris. he does that in some of the other st vids. Chris explains the reason why he breaths so hard is cuz, "I'm too fat."
I was just joking around, I was actually shooting this video - can confirm, "too fat" is definitely the reason, also being hot as hell in there didn't help
+David Van Norman lol ya I heard those warehouse gyms can double up to be a sauna.
Watching this with headphones. Can hear camera man's breathing. Creeped me out.
Now i cannot stop hearing it. :(
Must be a heavy camera
Hey Alan, I've been following your greatest program ever created and I'm seeing really good results so far. My grip strength has improved drastically. I'm now able to do my 5x5 deadlifts with a double overhand grip. Cheers!
Glad to hear!
Stay tuned for part 2!
I was hoping you would being invited to their gym and even mentioned it a few times in their live chats. Great Q and A sessions and glad they finally let you touch a bar.
u are off the team
didnt notice the breathing until i came down to comment section..now i cant fckn watch the video in peace :')
555markk same problem
is your camera man jason blaha?
Hi guys , jason blaha hear, and today...!!! lol
Your grammar almost sent me to snap city.
BUHAHAHA!
Narom Ngin mine did??
XD
i lift purely for my glutes.
bubble butt bubble bubble bubble butt
You are Fucking annoying
Are there other reasons?
i see a beautiful personal trainer that i use to work with and all i ever saw her do was sumo deadlifts and squats. she had the nicest ass i ever seen just amazing and it takes all the meatheads out of sync when she is working out. so I'm guessing that what the ladys want on us too. it just sucks for me cause i keep hitting my right knee cap on the way down. any suggestions?
ye, we can tell
Dude the camera man needs to sit down or he needs a lighter camera he is breathing so heavy!
It's really distracting.
Vertical shins, wow what a great tip. I've watched a hundred of these videos (99 by Alan) and never picked up on that. Also, great tip about pushing feet into floor, not pulling with back. Wow, this has to be one of the best sumo deadlift cue videos. Mark and Silent Mike really covered all the angles, imo. Good video peeps.
I love how Mark Bell offered more weight to Alan as if he was offering to serve him another cup of tea lol
❤
Wow, that ending was a tease.
"More weight?"
"YA"
*roll credits*

Really like you working with Mark and Silent Mike. Some of the best that TH-cam offers!
Really love all you guys collabing together in video features, really connecting the lifting scene.
Thank you folks. Have been alternating between conventional and sumo as it is easier on my older hip joints. And as the saying goes. Practice makes perfect.
Add Omar Isuf here and you got the perfect youtube workout crew, great video
and me :)
iiiiiiinner cityyyyyyyyy
Alan looked like he didn't know wtf to do when Mark started complimenting him.
Thanks again for this video Allen. I hurt my back about 18 months ago and tweaked it pretty good . I’m just getting back to the gym and deadlifting .

Where is the how to kickflip video???
Very funny banter. Good on you Alan for adopting that white belt mentality.
Awesome and informative video Alan! looking forward to part 2
Why do I keep hearing darth vader breathing
Great vid! Alan almost looks natural among these needle heroes. Info is still superb.all things considered. Salute from Denmark, Allan!
Alan asked all the important questions to help us understand everything, Great Video! also anyone else hear the weird breathing by the camera man?
Next tutorial: How to use the slingshot to increase your tire flip
Very helpful cues. Thank you!
Mark Bell is an awesome teacher
Alan make a video of sumo deadlift to explain it more
i watched mark bell and silent mike doing sumo with ed coan before i watched this video. and damn silent mike put on much weight in just 1 year
This strength training movement is getting serious ! I want to fly out to California just to meet you guys and train for a couple weeks !
Fantastic video. I just started following your channel. You're doing a seriously amazing job. Cheers!
Best SUMO vid out there!
Awesome Video! I'm going to have to try some Sumo deadlifts. since my back is still not 100% yet.
I did sumo for the first time yesterday and it felt REALLY easy when you've been doing conventional. I just searched for it now because I'm just intrigued, but I don't think I'll be doing sumo lol
Man I’ve been watching a lot of mark bell lately. It’s crazy to see him here before he started the carnivore diet
Alan is mobile as fuck!
I really appreciate this vid, not because I don't know how to sumo pull but cause it reminded me to do it more! specially today, Deadlift day
Thank you. Very well explained
Awesome video. This helped me a ton. Kind of creeped me out hearing the camera person breathing during the video LOL.

That heavy breathing cameraman though...
Marks arms are relaxed sticking straight out in front of him
reducing stress on my back is the main reason i do these
awesome vid dude. tonnes of good info
FINALLY THIS COLLABORATION HAPPENS
Homie with the camera is breathing INTO the microphone
Brilliant stuff. ----- 2 Questions though

The angle of the dangle is directly proportional to the weight of the plates
and the mass of the ass is directly proportional to the depth of the heft
Is there enough oxygen in the room for the cameraman?! 😳

QUESTION ?? if we can position our feet wider , is it better to lift with wider position or just narrow like this guy ??????????

Damn that video of Mike pulling sumo looked old, he was so small.
about a year ago if I remember
My lower back gets more of a "pump" feeling when I do sumo rather than when I do conventional. Am I doing it wrong or is that normal?
i'm trying to learn this lift and the bar keeps riding my shins to the point where i'm bleeding. gonna start wearing sleeves but should the bar make contact with my shins at all coming up and down? what's the bar path supposed to be?
chris kendrick the closer the better. wear long pants or deadlift socks.
Remember, shins always vertical.

I normally do vanilla deadlifts and even after hard sessions I don't experience this type of long lasting aching pain. Can anyone drop some advice?
WarriorofCathar You might be standing too far away from the barbell, causing your lower back to round over. Maybe move your feet closer to the bar.
I have a really long torso and conventional kills my back. I’m gonna try sumo however should I still try conventional? Any tips?
HONESTLY, I'd just prefer if there were an *Alan-ONLY* tutorial on Sumo DLs.
It'd be WAY more concise, coherent, and informative that way..
except for the fact they were literally tutoring him lol, Mark bell and silent mike are probably the greatest source of powerlifting imformation lol
It’s also harder on the quads, just to add
why do i feel like deja vu? is this a reupload?
cool video Alan. Quick question how come Eddie Hall and big guys going for WR Deadlifts pull conventional and not sumo?
Probably built better for conventional. There is a video somewhere where they show you how to measure your limbs etc to see which style suits you. Most shorter people do conventional where taller people tend to do sumo I find as they can utilise their leverages and limbs length better
Can't pull sumo in strongman

What's a good % of a conventional 1RM to lift using sumo form, say for a 3x5 workout?
Treat it as it's own lift slowly build up and get the form correct before basing it off your conventional 1rm. If you deadlift 405 conventional you can't jump straight into a 3x5 sumo workout at 315lbs
Is it normal that i deadlift more when i do conventional deadlift?
Haha! Was gonna comment about the breathing cameraman... Then seen all the other comments hahahaha
Are we allowed to move the bar?
When they mentioned GPP @ 6:10 doeas that mean General prepraration phase?
General Physical Preparedness
Very fast learner :)))
drop it like it hot lmao Silent Mike😂😂😂
Did I miss something or Alan forgot to introduce them?
I'm a female and don't want my upper body getting more developed than it already is. I started pulling sumo for leg and glute development. Is it worth my time for hypertrophy gains and if it is, what rep range should i be doing them in? I hear 8-12 reps is best for hypertrophy, but some say that's too many reps for deads.
you answered it for yourself, but mainly just focus on pushing the overall volume
Thanks for responding! So is it good to do deads in the 10-12 rep range for growth?
+grety paula 5-8 it's a very taxing compound exercise because you can usually pull more weight .
+grety paula 5-8 it's a very taxing compound exercise because you can usually pull more weight .
thanks!
I hope the next part does not include heavy breathing, makes it difficult to watch with earphones.
Alan does your cameraman always pant into the mic, or what? 😁
Had no idea nick merks was lifting 5 years ago
Could you do one for conventional as well?
He already has one. Both channels do
whats up silent mike
How long does it take to tell someone how to lift a bar off the ground with their legs apart?
Apparently it takes 20 minutes
Why are you watching it if it's so easy?
This camera mans stalker breathing is driving me nuts!!! Good video tho!
