- Basic repairs and maintenance to your plastic kayak or canoe - including fitting keel protector tape, basic plastic welding and cleaning up the hull.
My kayaks cop a hammering, being dragged over rocks, along dirt tracks and over oyster beds. Every couple of years I de dag the hull, and fill in any deep gouges.
Hi, I'm Bill from Rod N Paddle. I am part of the Australian Kayak fishing fraternity, based in the inland city of Canberra, predominantly we are freshwater fishing, but the salt is not far away. Rod N Paddle is also on Facebook and Instagram - come say high. Canberra is the National Capital of Australia, and we are blessed with plenty of easy access waterways all within a few hours drive.
Tools needed include heavy duty gloves, a heat gun, a metal and plastic scraper, sanding block, polyetholene rods, small rasp, and a knife. A sponge our rag, some cleaning solution - like mixed dishwashing fluid or water, and also a protectant like 303.
303 prectectant can be purchased from some camping and boating stores, carparts and hardware stores or check their website out www.303product...
Keel Eazy tape can be purchased from some kayak shops, or check their web site out www.keeleazy.com/

Excellent video. I have a cheap kayak & will definitely practice on a $1 bucket. I imagine I'll turn it into a strange garden sculpture with little effort. Thanks for sharing.

Tip of the week, obviously thin plastic heats up and deforms quicker than the thicker plastics. In the video you will see the plastic surface starting to gloss over, always use the heat gun on an angle, and don't point at one spot without moving it around. When it starts to gloss, move along. Practice on the bucket, you will be fine.

Thanks so much for watching and commemting. You are right, and perhaps that is worth a revisit, including a torch, but originally when I made that vid I was concerned about showing people how to use the torch, guess i have seen too many accidents with heat guns 🤣

Nice one Bill! I used Keeleasy on my Stealth boat which is probably more important due to the fibreglass construction and it does a great job of protection. Perhaps another vid on plastic welding and attaching stuff using rivets and nutserts?

Supercheap do a black plastic bumper protectant. Brilliant stuff and cheaper than Armor-all....Nice helpful vid dude...
Thanks very much. I have tried a lot of the chemicals, and prefer 303 protectant, but it is gopd to know about alternates.
I highly recommend never using Armor-all on a boat; it contains silicone so makes the surface it's applied to impossible to bond anything to (so will likely make it impossible to get a durable bond with the keeleazy tape). Once Armor-all has been applied the surface is permanently contaminated with silicone (I learned this fact the hard way after applying Armor-all to an old whitewater raft ...... that was 15 years ago but to this day I still cannot make durable bonded repairs on that particular raft, even after trying all the suggestions from Armor-all's tech experts) ...... polyethylene is difficult enough to repair as it is !!
303 is my go to for non-metallic boats.
What about the foam floatation blocks inside the hull of Hobie PA kayaks? Will it overheat and melt inside?
Great question Brad, provided you dont go crazy and pump too much heat into the plastic, it should not be an issue. Most US of A made kayaks have pretty thick hulls, and really, once you get that gloss sheen on the surface appearing, stop putting more heat there until the gloss starts to fade a little. A good idea is to get yourself a piece of plastic about the same thickness and constitution and practice on it.

It was painful to listen such a slow speech with weird rhythm, I had to increase video play speed almost twice.
