My family has owned a fiberglass bathtub manufacturing and repair business for almost 50 years now and anytime iv ever seen someone use fiberglass in a video I can't believe how much they don't know or how many things they could be doing to make it much better and easier but I have to say ur the first iv seen that pretty much does know what ur doing the only suggestion I would have is that u can always use poly filler or even bondobefor glassing the area and a real fine scim coat of leather one and then sand smooth to fill any tiny pits u may have also Acetone is the very best product to use to clean ur repair area before during and after sanding and gel coating/glazing or painting and to also use as a thinner in ur gel coat or paint and it will clean ir hands really good and drys in seconds with no oily film. But all and all real good job bud a man with good fiberglass skills that actually knows what he's doing isn't easy to come by...
Ment to say a fine scim coat of poly filler or bondo not leather one some time when I use voice to text this new phone puts down some of the weirdest things that sound nothing like what I said what the .... is leather one lol there's no such thing when relation to fiberglass thanks for reading my comment Rok I would higher ya for fiberglass bathtub repairs.
I'm a patcher at McKee craft and we mix our Mekp at 2% in the summer and 4% in the winter. I've noticed that vinyl ester resin kicks off a lot quicker.
Thanks 🙏 heaps. That was so helpful. I’ve got a fibreglass repair kit here to fix a fibreglass pond (it’s dry, not in the ground yet, damaged from removing and moving). The kit has some white powder that it says is for making polyester putty. What’s that and do I need to use it anyway??? The instructions I now understand say to do what you’ve shown in this video but there’s no mention of where/how to use the white powder.
I have a small crack right under the boat, inch away from the bottom midle. The boat is on a trailer - will resin hold above without dropping/sliding down? Thanks
MrCods ha well I kind of did😅 I probably should not have put so much glass around the fix as it just adds more work to sand and get rid of the excess... but the same result in the end so all good👍
Hey Rod nice work. Do you ever use glass cloth instead of chopped Matt? Also, don’t mean to be critical but given how much of this work that business probably does I reckon your boss should pony up for some better RO sanders, and particularly dust control. Festool rotax 150 for a start and the 90 for small jobs. Hook them up to any old auto shop vac and not only is the sanding and control superior to an air sander but you will get almost complete dust control. Perfect from roughest sanding to finest polishing. They may seem expensive but they last forever and pay for themselves. I am no OH&S nazi but that dust is bad and personal and environmental exposure should be minimised. Even if you wear a respirator while doing the sanding that dust is blowing around everywhere, coating clothes, and everyone ends up breathing it in. I know it is not your business, and stuff like this is hard as people get stuck in their ways, so really this is aimed at the boss! Keep it up legend. Hope that finger can get fixed.
Hello, I am thinking to have a small sauna in the after cabin of my glass fiber sailboat? May this project go well if I investering in a proper isolation? Or is that just an insane idea?
That was a good little instructional vid! Its great to have vids like this out there showing how easy it is to repair damage to these types of kayak... I assume that that was an older stealth that you were repairing? I've heard that the new ones are made with epoxy resin not polyester or have I heard wrong?? I had to do a fair few repairs on my Pinnacle kayak over the few years that I had it and I my method was a little different from yours - I glassed up the crack from the inside and then put gel coat on the outside, once the gel coat had cured I sanded it level and then went through the fine sanding grits and then polished it with a compound. That meant that there was no need for paint and I retained the superior flexibility of gel coat... Cheers!
Thanks Kerry, yea we just use Poly resin. As long as the area is prepped and keyed up well it will stick no problems. You method sound good for no painting for sure. We use 2 pack and spray for time and ease👌
You used way too much resin compared to glass. It's the glass fibers which gives fiberglass its strength. Resin is not strong and cracks easily. Also a layer of woven fabric glass over the hole fist would help bridge the open hole and then matting over the fabric.
I just did some Not hating on you mate But what a awful proces it's Everything stiks together al the time except the part you want to stick Looks like I did a apsoluly wackjob of it Let's hope after sanding and painting it looks okay on my boat
owns 2 pairs of safely stored safety glasses- hung on the wall. safety glasses used in this video - 0. lolll gloves too, cmon guy, don't wanna get sensitized to the hardener or get sick. bad news.
Thanks for video! I just bought an older fiberglass kayak. The deck is weak and has cracks and wood rails are rotten on underside of deck(they are supposed to support the deck and seat). Feeling a bit overwhelmed thinking about it all and especially the painting part..I've never done this sort of thing. If I manage to patch it all up and reinforce the deck again, what can I expect for painting? I was thinking interlux two part paint but would like a cheaper spray option so I really get a glass finish.. I can't find any info on painting kayaks besides a ton of rustoleum crap can vidoes. If anyone has tips for paint..
Hey rod do u work at aks ? Im not 100% sure on a skiff I know you know ya stuff if i came down would u b able tyo run threw things with me ? Basically would be after your new one just set up in a way that suits my style of fishing and hopefully about a 15 hp not a 6
I'll be sure to watch all the ads that come up on your vids, no matter how shit they are. You'll have to make up for it though by catching some monsters! 😀
hey mate, saw a stealth skiff, looked like your one. was on the top of a car in Noosa yesterday. I assume it wasn't really yours but the skiff thing, might be catching on up here... don't get on the water much these days, but I can see skiff would be a sweet thing to have in ya fishing quiver.. cheers mate
Hey rod. Quick qu. I am buying a boat and Im wanting to target the fish you do. snapper... tune ,...mackerel etc. DO you reckon I could use a sedona 4000 with 25lb braid and heavier leader. Also do gang hooks work for mackerel and have you used them
Rod could you please consider doing a video whereby you do a full restoration of an old, beat up fishing kayak, including (very importantly!) the full painting (gelcoat?) step?
Great simple DIY mate 👍 Where are you working? Is that a kayak shop? I was under the impression you worked as a graphic designer 😂 I guess I got that wrong 👍 either way mate your a bloody good dude and entertaining to watch mate. Keep up the great work 😂
Collie Yak hey mate, yea I’m qualified to be graphic designer and have done for many years amongst other jobs😅 but at the moment I’m working at the kayak shop👍
I was searching on how to sort my damaged jetski hull and this is perfect. I went over some hidden rocks while out with a few freeride mates and it has taken a fair chunk out but not gone through so it's just a surface patch to pretty it up then flowcoat it. Thanks for the vid mate 👌
Depending on how deep the chips are, we would do the same, but if the chips are only in the top coat we may just mix up some flow coat and fill the scratch and sand back
By the time you fill the hole with resin and glass it ends up sinking in a bit and being a bit thicker then the original walls of the kayak so no real need.

Excellent video! I need to do some minor repairs on the fiberglass wing of my 84 celica and this video will be incredibly helpful. Thank you!

Cant get enough of this channel.
Great very informative video, I’m in the market for a boat but looking for a project boat to save money so this will help out a lot!
Thanks, I've got a small repair on new boat. That was just what I needed!
I've been liking these gear and maintenance videos.

Lance Rogers I have a hole in my boat. Citation thunder craft. Help?
@@leesire Thunder craft LOL.
He is wearing a mask before wearing masks was cool 😎
Great video buddy, Cheers 👍
You made a really nice job of that Rod well done 👍🏻
Every time ye said "round de outside" I taught of 2 trailer park girls must be week that's in it. Great work rod.
I have some soft spots around the fish well and cracks in the gel coat. I assume it's same repair?
They have these thing called gloves... check out Grease Monkey nitrile gloves like mechanics use.

very resin rich mate
Not more fiberglass than that? It was like 95% resin
So I can do the same if it's surrounded by gelcoat instead of paint? And you don't do anything underneath from the bottom of the hole?
Why did you use cut up strands instead of a sheet?
Cool vid bro🙏🏾
Just spent 6months in leaky boat

We have used cloth a few times on different patches. Yea some good ventilation long term would be a good idea👌

For the size of the hole that repair should of tappered back 3 times as far

Sure thing Drew, feel free to give AKS a call when your keen... 15hp sounds a bit crazy though !
Should always put glass on glass and should be stepped smaller to bigger. Too much resin and no steel roller. Itll hold though
Do you get paid more by TH-cam if we watch the ads on your vids?
Yep if someone watches the ad for over 15secs or they click it I get a small portion of the ad revenue.
Do ye no how many ads on your vids can ye see wat we see and wats ads are on your channel?

wayyy too much resin i wouldnt recommend glass over gelcoat or paint, should have ground down a much bigger area!!!
I agree with you mate, in England we do a proper job that's a lot stronger and could save lives.

Thanks for the video.
GREAT VIDEO VERY EDUCATIONAL 👍👍👍
What is the camical & mix up - name !

Hey bro I just bought a boat and it’s got little deep chips in the fiberglass is it still the same process
Depending on how deep the chips are, we would do the same, but if the chips are only in the top coat we may just mix up some flow coat and fill the scratch and sand back
Nice, thx for sharing
Awesome vid! Thanks mate!!! Good work..
Hey Rod, great tutorial video, thanks for the tips I've fixed the crack on my Supalite. Shame that now both the wind and swell picked up a bit haha.

Is there a reason for not backing the under-side of the hole to allow for a controlled finish inside? Cheers

Wouldn't it be better to insert some fiberglass into the hole first before layering the rest on top?
By the time you fill the hole with resin and glass it ends up sinking in a bit and being a bit thicker then the original walls of the kayak so no real need.
Safety glasses bud
Would this process work for a fiberglass hardtop that has a stress crack ?
Yes it would, I'd drill a hole in each end of the crack beforehand tho, so it doesn't continue cracking after the repair
A real man. No gloves awesome job!
Great vid, very useful
Amazing job, you have done the same job inside the boat? thanks
There probably isn't access
Great simple repair tutorial. Did you use epoxy or poly resin?
This was poly resin👍
I have a question... What is that you mixed with the resin?
It’s a catalyst to start the epoxy hardening 👍
👍
Where do you get your fiberglass because I need some.
Bunnings 👍
Great Job Very CooL Bro.. Well....done👍👍👍
How can I order one of those kayaks and get it shipped to Hawaii?
Look up Jay and Adam on Kauai. They are bring them in to Hawaii. Look up Seasoljhas🤙
Did you paint over the repair or gelcoat
Yes, this job would have been painted with 2 pak👍
Great job mate :)
Where did you get the *MEKP* ?
Nice vid Rod. I know the water pressure is from the outside of the hull, but did you add any chopstrand or glass and resin on the inside?
John McLaughlin no just did the outside, we have found it’s all good with out doing the inside👍
