HP Pavilion X360 Laptop keyboard and back light replacement

- In this video I replace the keyboard and back light on a HP Pavilion X360 laptop. If you're laptop is like this where the keyboard is held in place with plastic rivets I recommend replacing the palm rest as a complete piece. The trackpad can be easily moved over because it is held in by screws but putting the keyboard back in place in a laptop made like this is very difficult and you may not end up for a perfect fit.

Good video for this particular HP Pavilion x360 model. My model, Pavilion x360 14t-Dh is ENTIRELY different so I damaged the palmrest using these instructions. If you have a 14t, DO NOT TRY TO SEPARATE the top - it is glued together. Remove the ONLY THE BOTTOM to get access to the integrated palmrest and keyboard. Then unscrew the touchpad control, mainboard, audio board, power switch, etc to isolate the keyboard and palmrest assembly. If you're feeling bold, you could replace just the keyboard by removing the plastic pop rivets to gain access to the keyboard itself. I use hot glue on the pop rivet points when reassembling but very time consuming. I hope to do video for this 14t- dh series - Hooper Computers.

Very helpful video, thank you. I had to do the same replacement, I was a little bit more careful, so the plate wasn't bend like yours and I just put everything back in place without soldering, tape or glue. The laptop works fine again, and you cannot see the keyboard has been replaced, also the backlight works. The original keyboard wasn't working anymore because liquid got spilled on it.
Thanks for the video, this is a tedious job, I've done many of these and I get why you don't buy the panel including keyboard as the price is a little too expensive. When putting it back together after I replaced the metal plate I used a little dab of glue from a glue gun and pasted it flat with a spatula as well as melting the plastic that did remain. Once I tried melting the plastic rivets with a soldering iron to remove the keyboard but that made it too hard to install the new keyboard as the plastics rivets became blobs at the top, so it was just easier in the long run to just lever it off gently with plastic flying everywhere.

let me ask you a question, my friend. I got a broken keyboard with a functioning backligh and the replacement without backlight is significantly cheaper. Is there a way I can take the backlight from the broken one and install it on the new one?

Hello Michael, the letter T on my keyboard doesn't always produce the letter T on the screen or sometimes produces 2 Ts. Do I have to replace my keyboard? I have the 360 envy 15.6 inch laptop. Thanks

Great instructional! Thank you! As Chip Gunter did, I also soldered what was left on the plastic rivets and it held everything together nicely. I didn't have a soldering iron so I used a butane torch to heat a small flat-head screwdriver tip. Which, I think, worked slightly better as you have more control over the melting thereof. The flat tip could be dragged across the plastic nicely.

Nice video, but I have a suggestion. I use rubber cement on all the rivets and on the inner metal plate to make sure it is more secure. Rubber cement is good for flexibility. Keep up the good work.
Hello, I have an HP Pavilion x360 convertible 14m-cd0xxx with some keys not responding. Having watched your video on keyboard replacement, it seems almost impossible for me to replace the keyboard myself. so I am looking at buying a replacement keyboard still attached to the baseplate and the touchpad. How can I go about ordering this?
I have an HP Pavilion x360 m3 convertible, I just replaced the fan and the battery but now my keyboard isn't working. I've checked the ribbons under the keyboard and everything is plugged in correctly. May I please have some direction to fix this issue?

Try putting it in tablet mode. Its in the notifications area near the clock usually at the bottom right of the screen.

I probably bought it from an eBay seller. If you take your model number or serial number on your laptop to the HP Parts server website you should be able to find the correct part number for a keyboard replacement. You can then search for that on Amazon or ebay or just Google and see if you can find a replacement.

I always use a solder iron and melt the rivets and then pull the keyboard off of the Palm rest. And then when I put the new keyboard in, I kind of use the iron to plastic solder the keyboard back on.
Just what I needed. When I attempted to take out the 3 screws for the trackpad they were stripped. What do u suggest? This was the first time the laptop needed a repair.
If the screw heads are stripped try using a flat head driver, press down hard and turn slowly.

It sounds like a driver issue. In device manager check for a notice of a problem.
Hi, i have faced twice keyboard cannot typing for my HP laptop. Fist the 7, U, J, M. And now is 8, O, L, "." it's like one line problem and i don't know why the problem always like that. Any idea?

Pro tip: after everything is put back together. Take the end of a small pen (or similar) and just push down in the gaps between the keys. You should hear plenty of snapping sounds of things going back together.

@@MichaelTheComputerGuy thank you so much .. I had very minor spillage of tea with possibility of few drops going in some six keys around enter key .. wondering what should I do next? As I cleaned the surface and dried for few hours and the laptop is functioning perfectly normal normal.

Next time you do a repair like this, keep the plastic from the rivits and solder them back on to prevent the recessing. I was surprised at how well it worked.
I'm just not going to do that. For this kind of repair now if the keyboard is plastic riveted to the palmrest I'll just replace the entire palmrest keyboard and trackpad if necessary, assembly.

@@giz177 Google search for the laptop model number in the words service manual. You'll find a PDF from HP. Towards the middle of it there will be a list of part numbers. You can find the keyboard or palm rest there that will give you a part number to search for.

Hi best video i watched, helped me get the best idea i could get. But can you help me? I have an hp pavillion x360 15” and for some reason the CTRL key seems to have been clicked already though it wasnt stucked. It was press-able but when i click normal keys it seems to add the CTRL key and its making shortcut combinations. Not sure if its soft or hardware issue- please help! Thanks🙏🏻
Sounds like a hardware problem with the keyboard. Replace it if you can

Sometimes I will use a Hako 936 solder pencil to remove the plastic rivets. The heat temperature level is adjustable.

Not the best way. When keyboards are held in with plastic rivets you have to break out there's really no way to put it back. Its best to replace the entire palm rest.

If you're needing the part number for the replacement you should open up the laptop and get it from the part in your computer. That's only way to know for sure. You could try getting the service manual for the laptop and looking it up there. Do a Google search for the model number of your computer and the words service manual and you should find one from HP.

I cringed soo hard when I saw that electric screwdriver. Please stop using it.

@@MichaelTheComputerGuy I disassemble anywhere from 3 to 10 laptops daily and would never go anywhere near a laptop with an electric screwdriver. I do love them for installing equipment in network racks and wall-mounting equipment.
I find a narrow handle screwdriver to be faster than any electric screwdriver in the right hands and does not have the same risk of wrecking shit. I personally use the Xiaomi set which has a premium feel and has some of the best bits I have ever seen.
I daily carry the Worx electric drill www.worx.com/sd-driver-screw-holder-wx255l.html and have found it to be convenient for most callouts requiring mounting gear but would never use it anywhere near a laptop.
Modern laptops occasionally have zinc screws which strip if you sneeze in the general direction of one and the thought of an electric screwdriver just gives me the cringe.
@@mitchellryan1602 I wouldn't use a regular electric screwdriver either. This one has a clutch to prevent over tightening and striping screws.
@@MichaelTheComputerGuy so everytime you go from a m2.25X5 to an m3X6 hinge screw you change the clutch? or when you take apart any low end pavilion with the shitty plastics around the back case, how feel out the shitty internals before you rip apart the plastic holding the bras nuts in
