Marie loved Amy because she was married to her least favorite child so she was able to see her as a daughter/friend, but Debra was married to her favorite so she could only be seen as competition.
Gaslighting at its finest. They keep pushing your buttons until they found the right one, and then put the blame on you for "being too emotional"...
Marie was so conniving and condescending.
Always trying to put down Deb on her own manner.

Gentle reminder: Debra insisted that they buy that house next to his parents. Ray pleaded with her, begged her not to move into that house, and warned her of the coming storm.
Im not saying everything that Marie does is justified, but she was warned repeatedly.
I wonder how Marie would’ve liked Debra if Debra was a fantastic cook and wonderful at housework/ home making.

If Ray were a man and stood up for his wife every once in a while Marie wouldn’t be half as bad as she was lol
At the beginning of this episode Ray tells Debra not to do this cooking with Marie, to simply let it go and she insists and gets into this problem, Ray always tried to warn Debra of what Marie was like, and she never listened to him.

She flip flops over whether on wanting to have a closer relationship with Marie or wanting to have a win over her. The thing is that Marie can't accepts the fact that Ray truly wants Debra and isn't a little kid who needs her anymore. She have no real desires to form a true friendship with her which makes the situation even more frustrating for both Ray and Debra.

I think that if you warn your partner of what your family is like, it’s because you want to avoid problems, then if Ray already told Debra what Marie is like to avoid problems then it’s already Debra’s responsibility what happens, it’s like in the episode where Ray didn’t want to buy the house in front of his parents’ house and Debra didn’t understand and now we can see all the problems that are happening because of that bad choice. And good it’s just a show and if there are no things like that then there would simply be no show 😹

The real issue is that Marie is truly the person who get on Debra's nerves the most. She flip flops over whether on wanting to have a closer relationship with Marie or wanting to have a win over her. Ray and Debra aren't perfect or doing huge things for each other but you can still tell that they loves each other through little things. They takes the bad along with the good with each other. Could he tries to set up some kind of boundaries with his parents? Sure but who knows if they'll listen or actually follows through it. Could he tries to lighten Debra's load and stand up for her more? Yeah but honestly he can't do much about at least the parents' situation since they are going to do what they want to do. They just have to deal with the situation. As for Debra, could she be more understanding that Ray is in a hard place with his parents? Of course. Could she not focus on the little mistakes that he makes as much? Of course. Could she handles her emotions better? Of course.
That is the point. They are real humans with flaws. They don't makes all of the right choices. They don't always appreciates the little things in life. They don't always say the right things. They can get bit nuts about few petty things. Outside of few fights that got out of hands bit these two are actually overall pretty normal. Their main fights are over household chores, in-laws driving you bit crazy, nitpicking of some of your flaws or debating on how to handle your children in a particular situation. The show is a overdramatic about real situations that the writers had with their own families. It doesn't means that they don't loves them. So, it is not unreasonable to think that we're just seeing Ray and Debra at their worst on the bad days. The show would be pretty boring if they are always so loving and understanding with one another. Instead of focusing on the negatives why don't you look at this as inspiring and positive? Why not say wow, these two went through lot yet are still happily married at the end of the day?
Why would they at all tolerate Marie's crap? They had bad husbands who couldnt defend their wives.
Their husbands are her sons. They were broken before they met with their wives.

Ray is nowhere near critical to Debra as Marie is about her roles as housekeeper/mother (outside of cooking) which is very sweet
Usually I have no problem with taking a comedy as a comedy, but Marie is just infuriating here. She's being more rude, obnoxious and condescending than usual to get a reaction out of Debra, and when Debra continues acting nice, she throws her hands up all together and says that she was being sarcastic. If there was any doubt that she instigates Debra on purpose to fire her up, so she can play the victim, this episode cleared it once and for all. She doesn't want a better relationship with her because that way she can't be the victim monster in law who's daughter in law mistreats her.

Does this man, or so called man, ever stick up for his wife?? Ray is a wuss! Hopefully, even though supposedly this is based on his family, he is a much better husband. Ugh! Don’t get me wrong, I love the show but sometimes, even in this show, Raymond should stick up for Debra!! And act like a man.
