I’m not ashamed growing up poor in the Philippines.. On the long run it will help you survive and appreciate every little things what you have… Thank you Sir Andrew for sharing a real life in the Philippines..
Yes me too I grown up very poor but it’s lead us to survive and be continted appreciate work hard and dreams high at the end of the day your dreams come true in poverty ,work hard strive save money what you earn spend only your needs.thanks for your showing up.
100% my man. Adversity breeds strength. The most resilient and strong individuals I know emerged from humble beginnings. I see an undeniable strength and resilience from many in the slums. It's all about rising above and not succumbing to a victim mindset. Keep on thriving!
Many people are experiencing this situation not only in the Philippines but all over the world, there is nothing wrong if this is their fate and fate in life but even so, even though other people think they are poor, they still do it even difficult to survive in life, the most important thing is that they live without being trampled on by people.
I'm retired in Cebu City. My wife and I were eating at Jolie Bees at the I.T park one night and we both ordered chicken and rice. After getting done eating and just looking around, at our table outside, a young man came and sat down by us and started eating our left over bones, picking over them. I was stunned and offered to buy him a meal. When the meal came, he didn't eat it, he said he had already ate enough off from our chicken bones and the meal was for his 6 siblings at home.
@@retiredinmanilaoh have you been to the Philippines to know exactly what you're saying? Seeing the poor siee of the Philippines doesnt mean the whole Phils is uneducated and poor..if the educational system is poor, foreign students will no longer come over to study in the Phils..and mind you, if you happen to walk our streets and ask around in english, even street vendors can understand and communicate with english better than you do..we can even speak 2 languages at the same time: Filipino and English plus other dialects that we have depending on the province we came from..Dont ever belittle the Filipinos or our country especially if you havent been here. Your countrt might even be worst..by tye way, we have all kinds of Engineering courses offered even in our publuc universities like Civil, Mechanical, Chemical, Industrial, you name it. 2 of my girl cousins are licensed Engineers. My chemical engineer cousin who graduated in Polytechnic university (PUP) sta. As a 56 year old Canadian, i wanted to thank the wonderful people of the Philippines in this video as well as the videographer and host. I would never Judge the life of these beautiful people, because this is their life, and they are allowing us into their world. God bless you all. Love and respect from Oshawa Ontario Canada 🇨🇦
Leave to the Canadian for his righteous judgement of others. We have all seen the videos of the slums in Vancouver. Trust me the Philippines is a much better country than Canada
That guy mining in Paracale is my cousin’s husband. My dad plans on making a car wash business soon to get him out of that dangerous job. These people are such hard workers for so little money. Every time I go to the Philippines to visit family I am humbled by their life situation. Yet even with such hardship they are still so happy and appreciative for what little they have. Thank you for sharing and creating this documentary for the world to see.
@@thomasriley4963this isn’t a competition of who has it worst, but acknowledging we have this issue and something needs to be done. Spreading the word to others can help.
I visited the Philippines and never have I met such happy and friendly people, even though they were living in poor conditions. Makes you appreciate what you have.
Gross patronizing from this commenter if it’s even true that they visited the phillipines. Have some respect for the suffering from poverty - absolutely bs to perpetuate that overprivileged narrative that the poor are such friendly happy people bc that’s what you saw when you visited. I hear this all the time about Filipinos - that white/other ppl think they seem so happy and grateful like it excuses their unwarranted hardships. Like as a nation they just delight in living in hardship and waiting on tourists - what could be more offensive?
For anyone who may be curious about it: the word "pagpag" essentially means "to brush off" or "to dust off." Also "to shake off." Ever heard of the 5 second rule? Food fell on the floor, hasn't been 5 seconds yet, you pick it up, brush off any visible dirt or what have you, and still consider it good enough to eat, so you do.
I grew up like this❤ and didn't regret or be embarrassed at all. This kind of living helps appreciate everything in life and put me where I am today! A fighter!😊
Born and raised in the Philippines. Been in the States for 24 years. I'm very lucky not growing up dirt poor. I feel so bad for my fellow Filipinos who are struggling to put food on the table everyday. One thing. One thing though, we are very resilient. It takes a lot to bring Filipinos down. God bless my people. ❤
@@scopolamin1were you OK when you typed that? All I felt was a huge kinship & they're so proud of their people's strength & fortitude in such adversity

I would eat it. Pagpag eaters are not animals for people to be discusted about eating it. I feel bad when others dont wanna eat it. Why document if u wont eat it. Its disrespectful
No it’s not right. This guy is trying to normalise eating trash and worms. I feel for the poor. But this isn’t what God intended for us. What’s next soylent green?
I don't understand the replies here are you even condoning your kababayan eating dirty foods it's not just leftovers, it was already thrown in bins with germs. Don't accept it mahiya naman kayo. Government should be penalising this restaurant's that is allowing this people picking up their garbage.
A TH-cam channel that actually shares real documentaries without putting his own narrative into it ..., how refreshing 👍👍👍

I am adopted from the Philippines and I am thankful for every moment here in Germany. I am extremely grateful and thankful for the life my parents have given me. Thanks for taking your time to show the world a part of the Philippines.
Filipinos, you're not mad that westerners and the govt exploited your rich country? Your country is and has been full of gold and lush resources but foreigners exploit it and get rich while you stay poor. Ever read the Boxer Codex? Magellan's assistant Pigafetta chronicled your land has tons of gold easily harnessed. Gold the size of walnuts. Filipinos wore gold every day as normal wear. While Europeans were living in the dark ages Filipinos were walking around wearing gold.
As a Filipino who was born to working class parents who then immigrated to give their kids better opportunities in life I am so grateful for my childhood and culture. We were thankfully never in poverty (not exactly well-off either) but we were happy with what we had and my parents would tell me the sacrifices my grandparents made to make sure my parents could eat fresh food.
And here I thought nothing shocked me anymore. But PagPag that did shock me. Not really in the ways that I am grossed out, well I am, but more the lengths people go to survive. Truly eye opening documentary.
I usually SIDE EYE any western vloggers in the Philippines, but wow Andrew. You really did a great job without that weird "narrative" fake saviour / exploitive / or putting my people down. There are many struggles and you shared this in such a humane way. Thank you
My fiancé grew up just outside of Naga City, one of five kids. She was born at home in a grass hut. All five children made it through college. I have never met more resourceful and resilient people. Mahal na mahal kita, Josephine.
My first exposure to extreme poverty was as a U.S. Navy sailor in Subic Bay, where we layed over for fitting out of my ship on the way to Viet Nam. I was stunned by the resilience and positive attitudes of the citizens of Olongapo City, a makeshift quagmire of bars, brothels and bodegas. I had never imagined that the human spirit could thrive so well in such a filthy hell hole. Philippino people since then have always had my respect and admiration.
I was in Bicol region this June, because my family lives there, we also went to Paracale. The Filipino people are so nice, so humble, and so immensely resourceful in finding ways to make ends meet, i have so much respect for them, and for me it was a humbling and valuable visit, and it taught me a lot, in how to appreciate things.
My father was born in bicol, never met my relatives only few a few of them . wish thing were different .my Father came to the United States in 1979 died in 1988 .
Born and raise in Hawaii. I had many friends and work with many Filipina people. I can honestly say almost all are very sincere, caring, and very generous people. They work so hard, but they dont mind sharing thier fruits of labor with family and friends. God bless to all my friends.

Of course, they are a beautiful people. They deserve better. I hate how white old men, go to the Philippines to basically buy a wife. Old disgusting men, with young beauties, for all I know you could be one of them. It even goes as far as women basically selling their daughters online, in hopes they marry outside. Basically to bring money to them so they can live better. Many a pinay move to Saudi Arabia, to be molested, but they tolorate it because they can't get visas anywhere else. Their demographic according to the World Bank, in 2021 was 113.9 Million. Their country is smaller than many tiny European countries and surpass them demographically. So let's be real here! That is severe overpopulation. The only way to succeed for many, is fleeing the overpopulated country of the Philippines, and many do. The women are lucky, they can marry out. The boys and the men are less lucky. They are stuck. This is something that needs to be addressed, in a Catholic country I don't see it happening. Parents living out of shopping carts with 5-6 kids is an issue. Out of a shopping cart... With five to six kids! Poor kids are lucky to eat PagPag. They are overpopulated and they are growing even now as we speak. I guess it is Europe and U.S.A's responsibility to care for them?
Incredible video Andrew. The quality is second to none. Hard to believe you're doing this all on your own! Many documentary film crews don't make videos as good as this.
Cheers man, I appreciate it! I definitely couldn't have done it alone. I had to ask a mate to be the second camera, and I worked on the story with a makeshift fixer for some time. It's nice of you to compliment the quality, at this point all I see when I watch it back are the things I need to fix and improve for the next go around.

Be a Filipino. My mom is a native from Bicol region it really touch my heart.Your blogs are outstanding
It's fair to say that the Philippines and Filipinos stole your youth. They like to make life impossible to others. These people are so harsh, crude and so primitive. It's a barbaric nation. I don't believe it's possible to be proud of being Filipino. It's scientifically impossible.
You are one of the very few who can admit that life is hard in the Philippines. Most Filipinos instictively lie to themselves as coping mechanism, and pretend that Philippines is the best country in the world despite living in other countries or applying in other countries. They should stop on their sensitive little pride and be humble enough to admit the reality. That's why nothing improves in the Philippines.
@@8bittimetraveler834 it might just have the best people in the world. The Philippines economy is growing super fast. The future of the Philippines is good
I’m in Tennessee and I feed my chicken black soldier fly larva. Best damn food I’ve ever given them, literally can’t buy this level of nutrients and engagement for them anywhere. Really cool part is our system for collective larva is also taking care of the of certain kinds of waste and making incredible fertilizer for the spring and summer.
I'm glad you showed to the world what's not usually being shown by the Philippine mainstream media about our country. Our govt does nothing to alleviate the poverty of these people. These people, especially those in the slums, are the most neglected.
They are peasants, they are supposed to have nothing. If they had a stable place to stand in life, they might use the stability to try and take away from the wealthy. THIS CANNOT be allowed.
May I say that this is an amazing documentary, and you certainly aren't wrong about it being unfiltered. I suspect that the vast majority of foreigners who live comparative luxurious lifestyles will never even know about
… yeah … and still have lots of money left over for themselves. I apologize for the apparent selfishness of human kind. I will never have money. If I did, I wouldn’t be rich for long. I would spend it all trying to help our brothers and sisters all over the world. Sometimes it’s embarrassing to be a human being. Especially when I see documentaries like this. Take well care everybody, and please be ever so kind to everyone, including yourself. 🌱🙏🏻
These people are extremely resilient and flexible. Hats off to them. The air compressor, wow. I've seen Sri Lankan fishermen using one when deep sea diving/fishing on a boat slightly bigger than a canoe! I live in a third world country, South Africa and we have similar issues. There are so many illegal immigrants coming into the country, endangering themselves by mining in similar environments. Life is tough and only the strong will survive.
The Philippines may be poor in money but very rich in love. Around 1980, the Philippines opened its arms to welcome many Vietnamese boat people as temporary refugees in the Philippines. Most of those refugees now settled in the United States. In 2013, the historic typhoon Haiyan killed many Filipinos. The Vietnamese community in the US donated money to help the Philippines at that time to partly repay the Philippines for helping Vietnamese refugees. In fact, what we paid back was nothing compared to what you helped us during our time as refugees. We sincerely thank the Filipino people from the bottom of our hearts. Long live the Philippines
I visited my family in Cebu Dalaguette and I remember we finished our meal, and children came from under the table to eat our bones, my heart has never been the same since! Proud to be half Filipina but devastated for poverty that goes on there. 🙏🏼 I’ve never met friendlier people than Filipinos! Especially the poor. An example to us all that joy lies deeper than money and wealth. ❤
Just discovered your video. Thank you for capturing the rawness of poverty in the Philippines. It's shocking, heart breaking and inspiring all at the same time. I appreciate the decency in your investigating and your humility when interacting with the locals. As a Filipino growing up in the west, I am amazed with the resiliency of those back "home" and their determination to survive even under the harshest conditions. I look forward to your future videos. If they used contraception in the Philippines there wouldn't be half the poverty. There are tens of millions of Catholics in the west, myself included, but you don't have kids if you can't afford to give them a decent standard of living,as seen in this video. Having kids in grinding poverty is heartbreaking and avoidable. These people are brainwashed by the church, usually

Yes the people are nice but eating from trash is not good, There are many diseases and sickness from this trash food. Its probably cooked in gutter oil too its just not healthy. The people who cook the trash need to be transitioned to cook real food. The government should give these people a basic welfare to cover food costs. So,, No this is not acceptable, the Filipino people deserve better, no human anywhere should accept this.
Hi John, Thanks for the very kind words..your heart is indeed a Filipino..and with words you used here I’m sure you lived somewhere in the visayas area if not in mindanao.
The provinces in the Philippines are one of the best experiences I had in my life. It just feels like home; everything's so simple, slow paced, and I get to sleep early. I forget my problems right away. I hope you get to do more documentaries like this. I would love for the world to see how beautiful in the Philippines and how complex Filipino culture is. Every province has something different to offer. And yes, more unfiltered!
I love the Phillipines and there people!!! Very social, kind, and sharing!!! I encourage people to not have fear but get out of the cities to visit the provinces in the Phillipines among the people in love and generosity!! You will make friends for LIFE!!!
Great showcase of how some of our less fortunate community here in PH strive to go through this so called rough life. It shows how resourceful Filipinos are. It makes me more proud of my homeland.
16:57 I think the Filipino version of Popeye would be Pag-eye who instead of eating a can of spinach, would eat a portion of Pag-pag which although it may not give him superhuman strength, it would imbue him with superhuman Filipino spirit, resilience and resourcefulness to overcome hardship, defeat Bluto, and save Olive.
@@allisonfaxx4636 I haven't dived in with that part of our history. So I'm not 100% sure it's accuracy. I believe huge part of mindanao has been papulated with our Muslim people a long time ago. As well as indigenous peoples like my tribe, bagobo tagabawa. What I do know is that Filipinos that settled here in our land before all the invasion are consist of mix races. The malay, Indonesian, and Ita which there dna mostly consist of African race. This makes PH the most diverse mix of races even before all the invasions happened.

Ive lived as retired American these last 5 years in Philippines. This is a great opportunity to see human survival spirit in action in absolutely deplorable conditions. The chickens, by the way, are also raised in factory farms under deplorable conditions and GMO modified to be animals that in no way could survive in the wild without being medicated with stuff that keeps their overweight bodies alive. The irony is we live in a country rich in resources and rich in technology. The only problem being ,we , as a world, have subordinated these resources and technologies to paper fiat currency and now look what we have? We have a broken system that only those who are born lucky can thrive while millions in ghettos live like this, destroying environment and just getting by, for this thing we call money, everyday. 😢There must be a better way to live , love, and learn on this planet together . A resources based economy but that would take a world willing to include all peoples working living loving and learning together.😊
I know this won't be a popular topic due to the fact that there's so much human suffering in this video. However, your comment about animals being factory farmed and deplorable conditions is spot on and makes me sad. As an animal rescue worker who has broken into factory farms and taking pictures.. these travesties are the stuff of nightmares everywhere around the world.

it's pretty amazing to see how resilient and resourceful the Philippine people are. Every corner of the world has it's problems, and in those corners there will always be people surviving where we would not expect anyone to be able to thrive or survive. Still sucks that extreme poverty is the accepted loss for the extremely wealthy. And the people are finding Eco-friendly ways of innovating solutions to their problems.
I absolutely love my beautiful Filipino wife. Will be married 27yrs in a couple days, her family is incredible and also a very tight knit group of ppl. Her grandfather who was born in the Philippines, fought for the Philippines and somehow became an American soldier during WW2, survived the Bataan death March, survived the war, later stationed in New Mexico where my father-in-law became a US citizen. Talk about never knowing where you'll end up in life. I've never been to the Philippines but if the ppl there are anything like my in-laws and wife then they truly are an amazing people. I feel really lucky to have found the woman I have. Nothing at all wrong with the Philippines or the ppl. Great little documentary video.
This was a good reminder of why we need to be grateful for what we have. So many people live on so little. The pagpag food really hurt my heart. No one should have to eat rotten scraps to live. It would be nice if you truly enjoyed going out there and filming the people as they endure this suffering (all puns intended) that you also provide links to how your audience can help these people and efforts you made to help them as well.

I appreciate your video much, and I don't believe at all your intentions were to shame the people of the Philippines. If anything it was very eye-opening and educational. I shared it with my wife so that we can more truly appreciate the things we have and are able to enjoy in our life.
My grandmother grew up poor with 11 other siblings in the Philippines. She made her own way from the farms and ended up working hard to own several nightclubs and bars in rhe city. By the time my mother was born my grandma was considered a millionaire. She had a mansion with servants and everything. Then she married a marine and moved to the US and basically started all over.
It's my first time seeing your documentary and I like how you're honest and truthful about our situation here in the Philippines. Other bloggers or documenters will say flowery words just so they won't accidentally insult the viewers (and that might cause them to loose more views). It's also commendable that you eat the "pagpag" and gave an honest opinion about it. I wouldn't eat that no matter what. I hope to see more good docus from you, Sir!
Great video. Got me to subscribe a few minutes into it. I enjoyed how you presented the story of people you hardly know with no judgement. I've only watched you before with Sonny, and I'm glad I got to see you in your own element. Btw, Sonny being in the vid for just a few seconds and still made me laugh, the guy's simply hilarious. Can't wait to see you guys get drunk on honey together.
Your video is amazing. So well filmed and documented. I learner some very interesting things ! This is crazy to see how people can adapt in these lifestyles. I hope they can one day have proper lands and harvest healthy foods. But again, if the government wanted it, they would already have it.
Thanks for showing the other side of the world! This is the world with so much inequality, although painful to see people scavenging on leftovers, but deserves kudos for their ingenuity and resilience
I remember a remark Jesus said that we will always have our poor. May be it serves a purpose. To provide an opportunity to exercise charity to the poor and the poor to exercise whatever part of their character that will raise them out of poverty. I was poor growing up. Shined shoes, as a kid. Raised 6 good kids, big family now, Am now 95, still poor but a happy camper.
I’m not ashamed growing up poor in the Philippines.. On the long run it will help you survive and appreciate every little things what you have… Thank you Sir Andrew for sharing a real life in the Philippines..
There`s nothing to be ashamed of... Pinoys are amazing, if you ask me. Resilient survivors! Respect from Romania!

Find those 'poor conditions' in any large U.S. city and see how people act.
I realized that i will never be a visitor in the philippines, Because I was grown up there.
They have pretty girls, of course they are happy, while people in UK live a sad life.

You can’t brush off parasites or disease though. I respect the hustle but you can get seriously sick eating rotting garbage.

My wife is a filipina, she once almost died due to pagpag. This is just awful. This wonderful country and it's people just deserve better
Can you elaborate more ? Like was it like food poisoning?
How about 39th street & 8th ave in Manhattan
Madness
So just why is this - that nation should be thriving like S. Korea, Taiwan & Japan...?
Likely a corrupt government even since Emelda Marcos...?
That is most likely food poisoning because PAGPAG is food taken from the trash and re-cooked.

You are one of the very few who can admit that life is hard in the Philippines. Most Filipinos instictively lie to themselves as coping mechanism, and pretend that Philippines is the best country in the world despite living in other countries or applying in other countries.

I heard PH was mostly muslims before it was colonized 150 years before - is this true?

A resources based economy but that would take a world willing to include all peoples working living loving and learning together.😊
it's what we wanted in the 70s
I know this won't be a popular topic due to the fact that there's so much human suffering in this video. However, your comment about animals being factory farmed and deplorable conditions is spot on and makes me sad. As an animal rescue worker who has broken into factory farms and taking pictures.. these travesties are the stuff of nightmares everywhere around the world.

Buy their attitude is so touching. Appreciate every day. Some people have so much more than they do and yet they're sad.
Someone always rises to the top to take more than their share and most people if they were honest with themselves would do it too.
I've watched your video till the end and will continue to support you by watching more of your videos about the Philippines. I appreciate your interest in our country. God bless

Amazing documentary and in-depth coverage about the life and struggles of the Philippines' poorest. Kudos to you, Sir Andrew! Keep up the good work.

I work with many Phillipinos. After watching this my heart is swelling with even more love for them. They always bring food to work to share with everyone. I have one friend that is always asking me " did you eat? Here. eat!" Always trying to feed me!
Some of the most wonderful, kindest people ive met.
Im going to donate to feed the hungry in PI in honor of my friends who feed me.
Kudos to Andrew for delving so deeply into Philippine culture. His willingness to embrace local customs, even by trying pagpag, has earned my utmost respect.

Wow, Andrew. Eye opening! Also, brought tears to my eyes given the extent to which they go for a little bit of food and money. Thanks for shining a light on this.
Incredible quality. I got here from seeing a comment you made on a best ever food review show episode on australia and looking at your profile. The algorithm should have showed me this video because i enjoyed it a lot. Hopefully with more likes your videos will be shown to more people. Great journalism. Keep it up
Great cinematography, Andrew! The color-grading is amazing and adds to the story. It's sad to see how much food is being wasted like this when we could easily invest in better food distribution strategies! Kudos to you and your team
I think so too. His AV person is top notch. Really, really very professional.
Amazing, enlightening documentary!
Very well done documentary! I’ve been from the far north to the Deep South and back. Been in the back roads of the city and deep in the mountains. Eaten many things and met many wonderful people! Thank you for showing all you did!
it's pretty amazing to see how resilient and resourceful the Philippine people are.
Such an incredible Country and the most beautiful in SEA in my opinion. Beautiful people inside and out. They deserve so much more.
Catholicism is largely to blame for the overpopulation and subsequent poverty of the Philippines. Correct they deserve something better .
I absolutely adore the Philippines. The people are amazing and the country is beautiful. I miss it so much
So go back
You love poverty, starvation and fly lava?
Only the girls are
Then come and live here then?
Thank you. I have worked with people from there and now I have a better understanding of life in the Philippines.
This was a good reminder of why we need to be grateful for what we have. So many people live on so little. The pagpag food really hurt my heart. No one should have to eat rotten scraps to live. It would be nice if you truly enjoyed going out there and filming the people as they endure this suffering (all puns intended) that you also provide links to how your audience can help these people and efforts you made to help them as well.
yes!
Deserve to have a million views indeed. What a beautiful country, the Philippines.
Some countries have oil, others have girls. They just need a better way of promoting them. They would be like UAE.
I love that you show different parts of the Philippines. This was such a unique video. Keep it up.😊
Thank you so much for crafting such eloquent stories, and for taking us along for a tour with astonishing insights. Kudos to Andrew and the whole crew!
Thank you, it was fantastic to see your documentary. I just spent one month in the city of Cebu living the life of many people, living cheap cheap, eating one time a day for 1-2$ (in Robinson ground floor can be really good), working in coffees (lots of medical students : Philippines is changing), going to church a lot. People were so nice 🙂🙂🙂👍👍👍. Love the Philippines
Amazing coverage, for harvesting wild honey they should have left 30% for the bees for sustainability because thats there food also

As a Filipino I'm embarrassed that someone from another country beat me in going to places in the Philippines that are exceptionally "challenging", to say the least. But I love the vicarious experience and your courage in getting your ass to largely unseen and unvisited places is incredibly amazing. People in the North should now stop whining and appreciate the enormous blessings they';re enjoying.
It's never going to happen. American people will never appreciate anything. Especially living in a welfare state.

And, yes they should be forever GRATEFUL for what they have ... it 'could be' a lot worse for them.
The people in some countries who complain about their circumstances especially in 'crying poverty' don't know what 'real' poverty is!

Not having what you want. Always be grateful for what you have. Treating others well and helping those in need is always very rewarding. My parents are from the jungle of Laos. What they're eating is a blessing. Not taking away the poverty from the Philippines but there are even worse places.
This made me cry. What tragic suffering people go through to survive. This speaks so much about the evil that has befallen many poor Filipinos and yet you see how the powerful of the country abuse their positions and plunder public funds to satisfy their greed
Most of the world has similar stories and foods. Open your eyes to your own country and surroundings, the odds are that you have been wearing blinders.
The Filipino people are so gracious and beautiful on the whole! Generous happy souls, in spite of the harsh living conditions!

Can't wait to see you guys get drunk on honey together.
I can't believe this. Knowing there is much im not familiar with but this is crazy. Look8ng forward to more. Thanks and stay well.
If you feel pity for them, you take them their dignity
I remember a remark Jesus said that we will always have our poor. May be it serves a purpose. To provide an opportunity to exercise charity to the poor and the poor to exercise whatever part of their character that will raise them out of poverty. I was poor growing up. Shined shoes, as a kid. Raised 6 good kids, big family now, Am now 95, still poor but a happy camper.
Scavenging? No u r just wasteful.
Great documentary. Well done indeed !
