  • Filmed on my monthly visit to NYC to see my family. The weather was fantastic for this day of flying. I tried to get as many shots of the arches as I could without the constant Electromagnetic Interference from the catenary and other communication systems nearby.
This bridge looks fantastic in person and I'm looking forward to riding the new Acela trains through this bridge. Hope you all enjoy this video as much as I enjoyed making it.

The duck-under is looking really good, pleased to see the progress (about 1/3rd poured, it seems) of the top deck, which is hard to see from the filming people do from passing trains.

Yes, that's why I made it my mission to film the progress of this bridge from my drone. It's going to be a beautiful structure when finished.

Excellent video - thanks for posting it. Looking forward to the third arch being added in about a month.

Thanks. I'll be up there next month to make another update once that arch is added.

Best and clearest views yet of the "Duck Under" structure which I would love for someone to explain in more detail. I've studied maps and satellite overheads but can't why that feature is included. There's no railway line I can find coming in from the north or northwest that would need to cross under the NEC here. I'm confused! Thank you to anyone who can provide more informaiton.

The duck under is for future use. The long term plan is to build a Portal South Bridge nearly identical to this Portal North Bridge, but on the footprint of the existing Portal Bridge. They will then take a track 5 chord from the Sawtooth Bridges replacement project and tie it in to the duck under, then connect it to that future Portal South Bridge, and get grade separation between fast and stopping services between the junctions to the west and Secaucus Junction station to the east.
The duck under will remain unused until the second (currently unfunded) bridge is built, but it’s basically impossible to add it in later so they’re building it now.

Thanks a lot for the complement. As for the duck-under structure, this is I was told by someone who knows more about this than I do: They are building a second bridge that isn't funded yet. The duck under structure is for NJTransit trains to cross to the other bridge to get to the M&E line if they are on the other bridge.

@@andrewreynolds4949 Great explanation. Thanks so much for that.

@@andrewreynolds4949 I knew about the plans for the second bridge, but hadn't thought about the need for or advantages of separation between local and through trains. It'll be just the the collector/divider lanes used for freeways. Thank you!

@ Yeah, it'd be mildly obnoxious now, but impossible later, so best to do it now. There's a part of me that's considered...like...hey, as long as Portal South is unfunded, maybe it'd be best not to tear down the existing Portal bridge, and leave it in service in that role to get four tracks running until and unless Portal South is funded.

Any idea as to when the third span will be moved down from the Albany area?

I think within the next couple weeks if I'm to go by the schedule of when the last two arrived. But I don't know for sure.
