This is the kind of fun project you can do with your kids I could totally see cutting the legs shorter and then just putting it up on a shelf. Or leaving it as is letting it be in their bedroom.

That's pretty cool! I may have to build something similar! Might integrate it into a small loop, though, rather than just doing an end-to-end, But... just that single stright-ish track sure lends to thin-ness.

Nice to see the project turn into a proper layout build! I've got a question about the sensors. Do they need to be up that high? It seems it would be easier to hide them if they were set down into the foam so that the LED and sensor were just above track level.

    Jimmy,
Now this is a clever idea for your regular tutorials. Building a project then integrating it into a layout. I like it.
In the future how about doing the same on your train room layout. Build a stand alone project. Then in a subsequent episode demonstrate how it fits into your existing design.
Now, I have two requests. With all the various Arduino projects you have compiled, as well as those yet to come, how about developing a multi-task program. A sketch where a single reaction by the Arduino logic sets off multiple operations. Or a chain of delayed operations.
Secondly, in the New Year how about the return of the Dollar Store Buys, & "BRAND NEW in 2022" (see what I did there), DIY & MRxR Shopping Trips to Charity Thrift Shops. Just to expose your viewers to the treasure trove of pieces they can find to include in their design and build planning. Over the past 60+ years I have saved thousands of dollars in Thrift Shops buying bench works, train sets, scenery materials, and general junk I crash & mash up into my scratch building.
Not as an insult, however, you built your mountain with conventional cardboard cross hatch. Back in the late 1960's I did the same. Then while on a Thrift Shop visit I found ratty old denim shorts and jackets. Bought it. Sliced it. Stapled it into some mountain underlayment. In the 1980's, the same Thrift Shop had a carton of arisole foam insulation. At 25¢ on the dollar I started using "SloBlow" and have ever since on mountains, inclines, and random rocks.
Jimmy you have a superb soap box to not only expand the hobby into the future, but to rekindle the art form of our past.
Love to your lovely bride. EXTRA HUGS to the DIY DYNAMIC DUO.
    Jim

Did you consider putting the infrared sensors under the track? All of the commercially available reversing units work like this so they are easier to conceal.

Nice! However, I thought you were going to add it to your main layout, as a secondary passenger service that ran "in the background" while you ran freight operations on the main part of the layout! :-)

Suggestions on building a 4 x 8 table layout for On30 using Bachmann E-Z track?

I do love me some On30. I would look to HO scale plans for inspiration and then use a lot of scenic breaks. Maybe a divider with a backdrop down the middle.

@@DIYDigitalRailroad I have a layout pictured in my head.
It's going to be N scale. Based off an HO I did many years ago.
I'm having difficulty drawing everything out, obviously a 4ft × 8ft paper is difficult to find. Are there any free programs to help draw and print my plan to size? (Even if I have to tape a bunch of papers together)
And I just can't comprehend the programming and wire for arduino, or anything else that has to do with computer controls, or programming.
I know in my head where one train will have to stop and wait for the other to pass, and I plan to put magna rail, and faller automation in. And I kinda know where train crossings will require faller automation to wait for the train to pass. but all the TH-cam videos I've seen lately, I can't quite make it connect in my head, how to do it. Wish someone could show me, or do for me the programming after I have the track laid.
But I am still in planning mode. It's going to be a few months before I even buy first pieces of track.
I just recently learned about DC, and DCC. I Believe my HO was DC, (it was straight out of Beckman Walmart/ toys r us box with extra track) but I'm wanting to learn DCC for this layout.
I'd love all hint, tips, video links, and ideas for my future layout.

@@DIYDigitalRailroad I wound up using SCARM with the Atlas Snap-Track components and modified 4 x 6 Gold Hill Central out of Classic Toy Trains' TRACK PLANS FOR LIONEL FASTRACK. I only lengthened the mainline and the spur to the right of the passing track and designed a river water front wharf. On the single spur into the center of the right side of the layout I added an N gauge line representing an 18 inch gauge mine tram running from a shaft Coal Mine to an ore bin. I also added a spur to the passing siding gong left from it. This I have yet to decide what to do with it, but one thing I am thinking of is a suggestion for a line going elsewhere. The two track yard off the inside of the passing siding I am using for industrial tracks. I have some ideas; one idea is using a false front store I have with a freight door on both sides of the rear of the store and have a hardware and supply store where a truck or wagon could load out the rear on the road side of the store and boxcars or flat cars could be unloaded on the trackside of the building. The other spur of the yard may wind up a cattle pen or a small factory.
