      Exactly. How can we expect to show up in this world or find love if we hate any part of ourselves? I dislike not hate just disliked my body and complexion bcus I am the only thick dark chocolate kinkier hair one in my family. There was a lot of colorism and body segregation in blk families bcus of society and beliefs during enslavement that was carried on for several decades after it was abolished. It is still going on in 2k24 but not as badly. Ppl don't realize that we must do better once we know better. That means fix your insecurities from childhood trauma and walk away from non positive beliefs so that we don't keep repeating the cycles of abuse for our children.
      I'm so greatful for the natural hair movement. I was born with long thick hair but I knew NOTHING about it and thie community helped me.

    Thank you for this video. Please say it louder for those at the back. Over 20 years back to natural and I'm never going back🤷🏾‍♀️ I'm all about healthy hair and follicles. The texturism, length bias and curl definition obsession for afro hair is for the birds.
    During the pandemic, I unfollowed all the influencers whose hair texture was not like mine. I realised they weren't relatable and woke up. I didn't see the point when products would behave differently in their hair compared to mine. Enough was enough.

      I unsubbed from all such ones too - years before that; after realising that I was also supporting and perpetuating the whole disingenuous tribe of "good-hair-gurus" profiting from the adulation of the shunned nappy-headed wannabes. Sad and farcical. That's my observation and rant.

      @@deejai1173 Nah, it's not that deep. Love how you call yourself woke while putting limits to someone else's choices and also "only going to people/following those you relate to/looks like you"..... sounds a little familiar. Please don't put your identity just in hair. You're so much more than that. How about identify as someone who helps others despite their social/economical status (whether more or less than you), race, gender, background, age etc. That's more woke. That's more important. It's easy to love someone that looks like you but it's very difficult but more honorable to love someone who doesn't.

    My natural hair has triggered other Black people. I expect the negativity from non Black people but I was shocked when I experienced from my own people. Not anymore but I still noticed it creates a discussion amongst them. Last year I went swimming. I had 2 strand twist during the swim. Well that night, I washed, moisturized and retwisted. I saw a few people from the pool party the next day and they were shocked because ish was shining, big and thick. I think they expected me to look raggedy. Mind all of those women refused to get in the pool because of their relaxers or lacefront. My natural hair gave me nothing but options. I love it

    Period. People have a hard time accepting their hair for what it is and thus choosing to not work with their hair. Hair acceptance is the issue. We need to accept the texture, accept the curl pattern, accept the shrinkage. Healthy hair looks different with different hair textures or patterns. Trust me, natural hair is easy once you accept your hair and how it presents itself.

    Hot Take: Sometimes people call something problematic or intellectualize something to justify their choices. They go on these long rants and do these long video essays about the history of hair and about why the natural hair community and the typing system is problematic all to say: “I want a perm and extensions yall” 😂😂😂 But no one wants to be accused of not loving their natural hair so they attach all this intellectualism to it and it’s ridiculous.
    I can’t stand when people do that. I’ve had natural hair my entire life all through the 90s back when clowning natural hair was constant and I was made fun of daily, so I find it hilarious that anyone could deem women who have natural hair to be n*zis and not the overwhelming majority of people who shame us for growing hair out of our scalp. we have all had to live in this anti-black texurist society for decades. Most of us have hair horror stories around trying to fit a standard of beauty that was never a reflection of our phenotype, yet they deem the natural hair community problematic. How many of us have hair that can never be regrown in certain spots, horror stories about comments from all types of people about our hair, etc all to achieve straight hair. I cannot. This is not to say their aren’t extremists in the natural hair community, but they are not the overwhelming majority of women with natural hair. And making it seem that way is just an effort to justify their choices to leave the community. Just say you want straight hair and that embracing your hair is not something you want to do. I can’t stand all the intellectualizing people do about why the natural hair community is toxic. No, our texturist society is toxic. Certain people with natural hair who demonize others for their hair choices are toxic. But the natural hair community is not inherently toxic.
    And don’t have me writing another essay about the people who claim it’s too difficult. I live in GA so it’s absolutely hilarious to me that women will try to convince me that maintaining straight hair in a climate that has 70% humidity most of the time is “easier” 😂. Idc what anyone does with their hair. Shoot, I dyed my hair for the first time in 33 years. I think people should experiment and have fun. But stop the lying about why you are making certain choices and leave the natural hair community alone. They sound like the rappers that lie and say their teachers told them they were gonna be losers when they grew up. Stop it, no one told you that you just wanted to be a rapper 😂

      I just saw a video like you described the other day. The woman was saying that caring for natural hair IS difficult, and so women “benefit “ from using texturisers because of less breakage…it was just dumb. Half of what she said wasn’t even true…and my only takeaway was she was telling women it’s okay to use chemicals. My point is…if you want to use that…or “training” your curls…do that…but what we don’t need is misinformation and made up reasons why OUR hair is so “difficult”.

      I would say it's not even your fault sis..think about it..people with our hair textures (or anyone really) who have been raised in a country where they are surrounded by mothers , sisters, aunties, grandmas, great grands, who have been doing the same hair styles and treatments for generations..do you think they are having these same issues that we are? Do you think they struggle nearly as much? Or do they have the knowledge and tools that they need to manage their hair because it's all they've ever known to do? Just something to think about, you know. It's a learning curve because these tools were not passed down to us. So give yourself some grace. We will each find our own way but it's not your fault that it's challenging. Be kind to yourself on this journey ❤

    No cap. It is hard to have natural hair when you work with the dominant culture every day. When I have braids or flat iron it or cut it, they say "oh I really like your hair". Well, I really liked my hair when it was full and big. I cut my hair because it was thinning and it was shedding badly. Therefore, I went back to basics and the Science of Black Hair. I learned why my hair was thinning and shedding. It was due to infrequent washes and products that were not good for my hair. Therefore, I am restarting this journey from the beginning and recommitting to take care of my hair. I didn't take of care of my hair the way I should because the stress of work and managing a chronic illness as well as taking care of my dog. Something had to give; it was my hair. However, loving my hair is a part of my self-esteem. If I decide to relax my hair then I know I have valued palm-colored people's opinions of who I am more than my opinion of myself. I have gray hair and I am allowing it to grow out. Some of it curls, and some of it doesn't; however, I am going to love it fiercely. Loving my hair fiercely means despite what other people think.

    I notice that people tend to confuse The Natural Hair Community with Social Media. It is social media that is full of drama and negativity for any topic. These folks should just get off of social media altogether as this is what is making them anxious. This natural hair community has taught me soooo much about my hair. I love my hair now - it only happened because I got to know her. I got to know how to take care of her. Also, my hair looks soooo much better than it did relaxed. When I was relaxed, my hair only looked good the day I got it done. Then after that it was pointy and greasy and thin. Done with that! My natural hair is here to stay!!!!

      Yes! I feel this. When I look back at old pictures when my hair was relaxed, it looked so flat and limp. My natural hair is the complete opposite and I love it!

    I agree 1000% with everything you said. It's absolutely insecurity and a form of self-hatred. I liken it to when black men make videos about why they date interracially, and its all about why they hate black women. If you don't want to be natural anymore, then don't, why make announcements and proclamations about why you hate natural hair and spread negativity about it. It's really disrespectful. Leave in peace and silence. The negativity screams "I hate myself". And yes the media definitely plays a part. The IG baddie, baby hair laid, silky updo phase of social media definitely made it hard to stay encouraged.

    A young lady at church asked me if I know of a salon that would be good for her to get a relaxer. I told her no but I would ask around. I thought it was kind of odd at first that she asked me because I don’t have a relaxer. And none of the black womenI know well in the local area have relaxers and apparently she’s in the same boat. I suggested she ask a woman on the street or store whose hair she thinks looks good. I didn’t ask why she wants a relaxer or try to talk her out of it. Although I don’t relax it doesn’t bother me if other people do. It annoys me when they speak negatively about natural hair or their natural hair. I don’t want to hear all that. Oddly enough I have been asked before by a stranger if I know/can suggest someone for a sewin. Not only was I not in a sew in but I have never had a sewin. I don’t know why anyone would figure I know this stuff. 😂

    Overall, I am grateful to have had people in 2008 to show me what my hair was capable of. My hair was fine but my mother relaxed it when I was 4 or 5, so when I started styling myself as a teen, I had no clue where to being. Once I moved out at 18, I was relaxing it myself and it ‘healthy’, but I didn’t actually know why I was applying a relaxer or what products my hair needed. Watching men and women on TH-cam go through trial and error with their hair gave me a starting point to safely experiment with my own. I’ve big chopped and cut off damage multiple times over the years, but I’ve ultimately fallen more in love my hair along the way. This was especially important since my mom’s family is white and I live in predominantly white areas my entire life. Without the black community on youtube, I would’ve been almost completely isolated from people who look like me.

    This is such a timely video, I love it!. The first time I was a loose natural I kept wearing stretched styles and I told myself it was because it's more manageable when it's stretched. This time around it's been 6 months, and I haven't done any stretched or twist-out styles. I find that my detangling isn't any worse when I wear my hair in a fro during the week, and I don't get any single strand knots either. I had to get comfortable with my hair being shrunken, and I feel so much more confident now. I even like how my hair feels and its shrunken state. It feels much more healthy and moisturized because that's how it's supposed to be. Acceptance of my 4c has made life so much easier.

    • @kkallsop
      @kkallsop 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      This may be true for you, but personally, I have to wear my hair stretched in some way if I’m doing loose styles otherwise the detangling is a BEAST!

    • @JGT318
      @JGT318 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@kkallsop I will admit that detangling is not a breeze, but it really isn't bad. I think it has a lot do with making sure it gets steam from the shower throughout the week, adding more moisturizing products until if necessary and then my wash process. I drench my hair smooth in a cheaper conditioner that's really slippery to use my palms to take small clumps and smooth shed hair out, rinse, then my shampoo, rinse and get more sheds out, and them my good conditioner. By the time I get here as long as I make sure each has a a good amount of water with the conditioner, I can get my wide tooth comb in and do a thorough detangle. I finally came to the realization that if I can get the normal shed hairs out before I detangle I have a lot less difficulty and breakage. Many people do their detangling before they wash and out of the shower but that causes a lot more breakage for me. Also, it takes less time then the way I used to do it. There is something about the water pressure pushing shed hair out.

    The the problem is that we were never taught to love and take care of our hair. As s child, I had thick, long hair down my back. By the time I hit 5th grade, my mother, with encouragement from my grandmother, started to get it relaxed, while still not teaching me how to style it. I stopped relaxers in the early 90's and never looked back. I'm constantly learning to style it in new ways working with what I have.

    I love doing two strand twists and flat twists to stretch my hair. Before I’d by “elongating” products that CLEARLY didn’t work. I had to learn how to realistically style my hair and appreciate what it could do instead of buying snake oil products.

I AM WHO I AM and my HAIR is who I am as well! I find that most people say they hate their natural hair because they don’t take the time to learn it and so it’s frustrating for them. Instead of doing different things like you said, they get discouraged.

It was a spiritual awakening for me realizing I am questioning what God made when I say I want it “longer, more this, less that…” not just my hair, but being consumed with comparison in all aspects of my physical features. It was also a loving reminder why I went natural in the first place, this is the hair God gave me. Thank you for being YOU. Thank you for using your platform to elevate the Word of God. I personally am grateful for the natural hair community. Hair is very personal and I had an unhealthy relationship with my hair. I used to flat iron my hair EVERY MORNING. I also was obsessed with bleached highlights. I learned (slowly) to put down the flat iron, use a satin pillowcase and master the twist out. I’m glad you mentioned the hair typing system because I got trapped into the wash-n-go trend which destroyed my FINE hair. It took years to figure out MY hair. The natural hair community all-in-all for ME helped me experiment more, pay more attention to how I viewed myself and take better care of my self.

    There are so many levels to this. For one, we live in a society that prefers aesthetic lies because companies need to push products. Insecurity is the foundation for consumerism. Whether it’s male pattern baldness, thin or thinning hair, the over valuation of being blonde, length, going gray, or texturism, no one is safe from self hate.
    Ironically, the very community that decided to revolt is also the most delusional at times. It’s very stressful and prevents us from living fully because it is a major time suck that extends beyond wash day.

My hair is ancient Most High technology from God and has a job to do, regardless of what products I put in my hair, she is going to start responding to the elements, shrinking and doing what she do to regulate my body temperature etc etc. She don’t care (my hair) how much time and money I spent to manipulate her, she gonna do her thing.
