I hate when people try to downplay genetic and say “ you just don’t take care of your hair enough” 😒😒. As someone whose hair grows even tho I don’t do much I know it is my genetics. When people as me what I do with my hair or how I get thick hair I don’t lie and tell them things I don’t do I just tell them it is mostly my genetics as my hair has always been this way but I try to keep it moisturize and that’s it. The way I wash my hair lord have mercy so aggressive with the detangling because I don’t have time to be there all day and the amount of hair that comes out it still amazes me how I still have so much hair. Ps I am learning patience during wash days now 😅

I’ve seen genetics first hand. With my son and daughter their hair is so different (same father). My daughter was a “bald” baby my son was born with a head full of hair. My daughter’s hair grows very slow, very fine and soft. My son’s hair was the length to his diapers by the age of 2 1/2. At that age my daughter’s hair just started slowly coming in. My son is autistic and because of that he struggled to eat. He only ate chips, fries and pediasure and his hair still grew quickly and long. My daughter eats very well rounded. I'm very gently with her hair because it very fine and delicate. My son gets hair cuts often because it grows so quickly. Genetics matters.

I was a bald baby so to speak but I always had extremely long hair as a little girl and well into adolescence. Even as an adult my hair was and still is very long. My hair also grows extremely quickly too, more than the average amount a month for most people. Whereas, I know plenty of people that were born with a head full of hair and never had long hair and still don’t. It just depends on the person and how their genetics will come into play as they grow over the years.

@@daniellenicole1980 yes true. Many people told me because she is a “bald” baby she will have extremely long and thick hair. But she is almost an adolescent and it hasn’t happened. She has very fine soft, short beautiful slow growing hair. My husband’s hair grows extremely fast and as for me my hair grew past butt length in 7 years. So it’s fascinating how genetics works.

Great video! 💕 I used to be obsessed with wanting to have long hair. But these past 5 years I've been focused on just keeping my hair healthy and taking care of my health from within. Eating cleaner than before, consuming more water, and exercising consistently. I've been natural for 8 years and my hair is now at waist length. The back half is at waist length and the front half is at BSL. Thin edges run in my family so I'm no longer stressed out about not having full edges anymore. It is something that took me a very long time to accept. Plus when I was younger I was taking good care of my hair. I would also put my hair up very tight. Now I know what to do and not do to my natural hair. It's been a long journey but I've enjoyed my natural hair at every stage. I can now officially say I accomplished having long hair.

My answer is similar to NappyFUs. It depends on what is considered long.
I've noticed different people groups have different standards on hair length.
Long hair for me is armpit length and longer.
MID length is chin to armpit.
I think everyone can get to MID length.
Armpit length and beyond is less common

Genetics is…an extremely vague term and the majority of us (myself included) truly don’t know/understand what we’re talking about when we say it, we just know what we mean-which is an end-all-be-all, making all hair routines, products and natural ingredients a pointless investment.
It will never be that simple-unless you’re actually a geneticist who specifically studies the genetics of hair. Our hair.
A single presentation on the genetics of cleft palate, autism and stuttering helped me understand what a small compacted corner I understood within the massive realm that is genetics as a whole. A Google search will not cut it. Cosmetology and trichology don’t cut it either. Genetics is so massive because it’s multi-faceted. It affects literally every aspect of the human body and life.
But I will say from what I managed to understand about this field is that: genetics are absolute, however, the manifestation (end result) can and often is flexible over time. Exposure/experience does affect manifestation.
In other words, you will never be able to determine what someone else’s genetics are simple by looking at their features. The lifestyle counts. You don’t know which genes that person possesses is actually being activated at that point in their lifetime. Nor can you determine your own.

As a psychologist, I just have to give you some clarity here. You can determine many genetic expressions simply by looking at a person, especially those that have to do with physical features and there are others that may need deeper investigation.
As it pertains to lifestyle, it's a mixed bag. There are some things that are made worse or better by lifestyle practices, such as diet, exercise, hair care practices etc and there are some things that genetics will have the last say in, no matter what you do.
When it comes to our hair, Grace is absolutely correct. Some people will never get past a certain length, which may be different based on the person.
It's important for anyone who is doing everything right with her hair and simply not getting the results of others whose hair has been growing the same time as hers, to understand that she is not doing anything wrong. There are genetic factors that each of us has to deal with, and it's important that we stop putting pressure on each other to conform to or fit into a box.
The natural hair community is now pushing very long hair, creating pressure and stress, which will only result in women losing their hair or leaving the community.

Very well said, thank you. While there is some part of what you’re saying I absolutely agree with, I will specify that the genes we’re most familiar with observing, are ones that can actually be physically observed. Hair is far more complex, in my humble opinion.
Going back to my first example, stuttering, I will never know that a child/person stutters…until he speaks. Hair has intricate and complex ‘behavior’, which is extremely subjective when people describe it, since hair also can’t ‘speak’. One person could say, that they’re doing everything right with their hair. That they’ve mastered detangling, for example, and it still takes them hours to complete. However, if they’re actually observed while detangling, now the flaws they didn’t know about/care to admit are objectively observed by another party; therefore mastery may or may not be agreed upon. ‘Doing everything right with their hair’ is too subjective.
There are of course some scientific explanations that effectively guide healthy care practices. Shampooing twice during a wash, understanding how ingredients interact with one another, deep conditioning on clean hair instead dirty hair, and what have you, etc, etc. Those things have been widely tested. Tried and true.
Furthermore, to go so far as to describe (really guess) your genetic disposition of being exposed to a specific routine or to specific ingredient. Telling the future, if you will, when in reality they’ll never actually know without that exposure-which is really the centerpiece of my OP.
Take stuttering again, for example. This is a gene of susceptibility, similar but not limited to an addiction. It can be present within a person, however it will only activate *after that person is exposed to* something to disrupt their auditory perception to the point that they are unable to regulate it on their own (like and addictive substance exposed to an addict). Without that specific moment, they could carry that gene their entire lives and never stutter any more than the average person. Which I could also never know they have simply by looking at them, and now, not even when they speak. So I agree, there are some genes that can observed by non-geneticists, but many that just cannot.
IF the same concept applies to hair in some form, then it really wouldn’t make much sense to say that some things will never happen to them (long hair for example) because genetics have the final say. Especially when 1) those genes are very much invisible to you, 2) you never entertained the idea long enough to actually try it in the first place (exposure), and 3) you didn’t try it under the same conditions of the person introducing the idea (efficiency). Even if genetics truly did have the final say in this case, there’s still a possibility that the gene is in fact conditional. Which will never be ruled out in absence of experimentation and exploration. If it’s been tested or experimented at least on some grounds, I can take that with a grain of salt. Without it, I’m highly skeptical.
I do agree and think what would be very healing, is people to understand that there is no need to fit yourself into a ‘box’ because you’re only going to do what it is that you’re willing to do. Not just because of genetics, as it comes off as a cop out imo.
From my perspective, the natural hair community isn’t pushing anything besides health and acceptance of texture, both via conversation and experimentation. However I do see certain individuals that are *seeking out long hair* and being the most responsive to that related content. The response of the audience is what drives content creators. I’m one of few people that disagrees that this community is for all of us because I’ve seen so many have come into it with personal agendas-they want the community to change instead of changing themselves. Ranging everywhere from wanting damaging hair practices to be more acceptable/favorable to changing the very definition of ‘healthy hair’ altogether.
I must admit, personally, after all the deflection from the original conversations, I’m quite ready for a few of them to leave.

I want to add that assuming someone’s hair journey isn’t “successful” because their hair isn’t long is ridiculous. Not every black woman desires long hair. Some prefer and choose to keep it short. No one assumes when they see a white woman with short hair that it’s because she is incapable of growing it long as some people do when they see a black woman with short hair. As someone with high density hair I can tell you the longer mine gets the more work it is. Mine is currently midback and that’s the limit I set, I have had people in my family grow waist length hair and no way in hell I would allow my hair to get that long. Most of my relatives who had waist length cut it because they felt it was too limiting as far as styling and time consuming.

Love this video! for me its probably so many things. I have 15 and 16inch 4c hair in MOST part of my hair. The rest is mild breakage. I been natural since 2007 and I will grow hair then some stressful event happens and here comes telogen effluvium lol The phase ends and my hair looks thick and healthy again. This happens over and over. Now Im 52 and yes PERI menopause is picking on me. Cant wear undo's because the hair behind my right ear and edges are receding.....ugh! I got a full CBC count and my health is great, I work out every day, eat mostly plant based foods, drink beet juice because I dont eat red meat. Take women organic plant based vitamins etc so for all that I only see bra length hair. Now my hair is shedding from the root, my parts are not very wide but I can FEEL my follicles when I tug my hair to style, I hate that feeling...ONLY because I know the shedding is gonna continue all the way til the other side of my head. I even sleep on satin, wear stain bonnet and wear satin clothes in the house lol still my hair wont go any further. For as long as I have been natural I should have waist length hair... but I dont. Maybe my genetics just say no to that....love you channel! keep schooling us woman of God....believers such as myself already know I can trust your information. God bless and keep you in Jesus name!

Hi Me! I can't grow long hair...and I'm ok with that. I'm a thalassemia carrier which destroys my iron/ ferritin and interferes with my blood. I'm a medium-brown skin black woman living somewhere with little sunlight and therefore having dips in vitamin D all year round. I'm neurodivergent which means for me that I'm more susceptible to stress and have to take mental health medication to cope. Stress definitely makes your hair fall out, triggers scalp inflammation, eczema psoriasis etc, makes you less likely to take care of your hair and for some neurodivergents, it can lead to trichotillomania. Oh yeah the medication makes your hair fall our too. Ask anyone with high blood pressure medication. I just have my small afro in summer, wear wigs in winter and wear braids, clips in and hair pieces the other season. It's ok and now I know the reasons why I'm ok with that. I can't change most of it so I just try to keep my hair as healthy as possible and live my life. I love you shouting out the other hair TH-camrs, scientists and stylists/cosmetologists!! yeah I started to obsess over my hair and I just thought...I'ma dye it and shave it into a bald Fro Hawk...I made my trichologists panic but my stylist was excited!! Well 6 months later all my hair hasnt fallen out form the dye and the Trichologists are less panicky...and the stylist is making sure that I take my Olaplex. Lol!

I have the exact story, add on PCOS and the hormonal issues. Also, No one ever talks about how being neurodivergent impacts one's health. It's tough out here😩

I think genetics should include hair type. How many times do you see a type 1 or 2 with hair down the middle of their back?? Now how many times do you see a type 4 with hair to the middle of their back?? Please don't say shrinkage is real. Most of us don't actually have shrinkage like that that if straightened out would reveal mid back or longer length hair but we do have breakage regardless of how well we eat or take care of it. No, I don't think that everyone can have long hair.

Not everyone will and can and I don't need research to prove it. I come from a communityand family where individuals do nothing but wash their hair with soap ( I mean bath soap) and put vaseline in that's it and hair is down to the waist. My brothers all have longer hair than us girls. I just feel like the obsession is too great for us (people of Aftican descent) and it stems from insecurities and the goal to measure up to beauty standards.

Am not sure i believe that some people are predisposed to have short hair because of genetics???. I think genetics determines how ur hair will react to stress or how thick or thin ur hair may be. Genetics also determines how coarse or fine ur density maybe. But length retention is determined by environment, lifestyle and nutrition

That's like believing that everyone can get down to a size 2. While everyone can lose weight, some can never get past a particular size because their bodies are just not biologically/genetically able. Just like we don't expect everyone to come down to a size 2, why do we expect that every black woman can grow extremely long hair, like waist length?

@islandbrenz9094 everyone can lose weight but not everyone can be the same size. Just like hair everyone can grow long hair but it comes in different shades and thickness.

🙄 No one’s hair is never not growing unless you have a condition. Everyone CAN grow their hair, it really comes down to haircare practices but ok believe you can’t if you want…
