      1) Why should USA take the main burden? There is obligation via NATO? but not to bear the main burden, surely?
      2) Also, don't forget, in WWII, they were not concerned with helping the rest of the world preserve democracy and sovereignty against Hitler - until Japan attacked Pearl Harbour. Australia/NZ, India and Canada all helped the UK, but America didn't.
P.S. I am so heartened about the US Charity sending so much food to Gaza.

How much would USA be affected by a Russian Europe?
Even China is softening the Communism. North Korea is the only hard-line communist dictatorship that I know of. Non-communist China seems a far bigger threat, plus Iran.
I know USA hated communism, but would Russia re-impose communism? If they did, how would USA be threatened by that? I never did understand the hysteria about the expansionist greed of Communist Russia.
USA did plenty of expanding (through sneaky means) and now practically has an empire, despite that breaking their Constitution.@@dessmith7658

It all comes down to this: do we want to live in a democratic society or not? Do we defend our way of life or not? We already have the 1930s precedent of what happens when democratic societies in Europe start to get invaded. If we don't man up, decide exactly what we want and act on that, things are going to get a lot, lot worse and many more lives will be lost. The axis solidifying between Russia, China, Iran and North Korea is very sinister indeed.

NICE here France. Expat. Yep, the mood here is mixed (there’s a huge Russian expat community in NICE, we even have our own Russian Orthodox Cathedral here). Lots and lots of Ukrainians here too. It’s a subject that isn’t really talked about that much, but I think generally speaking people understand that it might be necessary to send French troops. The reaction I’ve got is yes, send French troops in, but only if other European countries send theirs in too, so I’m guessing if Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania Poland go for it, then it’s pretty much a given France will jump in.

      Putin on Ukraine talks:
Are we ready for negotiations? Yes, we are ready. But only we are ready for negotiations, not based on some "wishes" after the use of psychotropic drugs, but based on the realities that have developed, as they say in such cases, on the ground. It is ridiculous of us to negotiate now just because they are running out of ammunition. Nevertheless, we are ready for a serious conversation, and we want to resolve all conflicts, and even more so this conflict by peaceful means. But we must clearly and distinctly understand for ourselves that this is not a pause that the enemy wants to take for rearmament, but a serious conversation with guarantees for the security of the Russian Federation. We know the various options that are being discussed, we know the "carrots" that are going to be shown to us in order to convince us that the moment has come. We want, I repeat once again, to resolve all disputes and this dispute, this conflict, by peaceful means. And we are ready for that, we want that. But this should be a serious conversation with security for the opposing side, and in this case we are primarily interested in the security of the Russian Federation. We will proceed from this.

I'm a very regular listener of your podcast from France (well, I'm in Belgium, but I'm French). I think that Macron's position is aligned with France's interest. Of course, it's easier for him to states that Le Pen is a Putin's supporter, but he could do it without the need of being heard internationally. What matters is that France has been trying to push for more independance from the US for years .. this was not well understood, but now with the risk of having Russia being so agressive outside its 1991 borders, and the risk of having Trump back at the White House, this position makes a lot of sense. It's better to rely on your own army, your own industry, rather than relying on external support. The language of Macron, and of France, has been consistent, it was simply not audible just 3 years ago when war was only for third world countries or nostalgic european colonial powers. Well, to rephrase the Beatles, we're back to the time of the USSR .. 1980 .. I was just 7, but the perspective for me as a boy was to go to Germany for my military service. When I turned 18, my father took me to a trip to Prague, and I've seen Russian soldiers selling their medals. The idea of war had simply disappeared for nearly 30 years in Europe, and very few country stated they need to have an army, as the US will always be there to protect us. I'm glad we've maintain certain capabilities .. they are today our life insurance against Putin. Frederic

So, when Putin started his massive invasion of Ukraine the American policy establishment asked "Russia has invaded, how does this impact keeping rich people rich?" and the answer was "I guess we buy a fair amount of weapons over a long period of time" Not how do we defeat Putin, or secure Ukraine and Europe or bolster NATO.

Here's Putin's full answer to the interview question regarding negotiations:
"Are we ready for negotiations? We will proceed from this."
