  • This is an in-depth analysis of the USS Enterprise C ( NCC 1701-C ), the Ambassador Class starship from Star Trek First The Next Generation's "Yesterday's Enterprise." It covers:
    The production history behind the USS Enterprise C
    Filming model breakdown
    Evolution and modifications to the ship's exterior and interior
    Random tid bits
    Star Trek Futures: / startrekfutures
    This video is possible because of the individual work of fans around the internet. I'm basically just pulling together random articles and picture collections, then packaging them in the form of a video, so thanks to all you wacko internets out there for sharing your material.
    Therapy is a video series that’s part review, part retrospective and most just stuff… like random background information, trivia, mistakes, observations, etc. Hope ya enjoy!

      @Voltaic Fire Ironic because it's a one off. Some designs, like the Excelsior, are used over and over again. They changed it up by sticking something on it, like they did with the Enterprise B. But the C, which was never really seen again outside of that episode (unless it was in a battle sequence that I'm unaware of), was really good in its own right.

    • @brentcatherman8762
      @brentcatherman8762 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      They had to do somethign to make it look slightly different. When you think about it those red uniforms were used from up until the original Enterprise was destroyed to when the C was lost. That's a farily long run when youd consider what Starfleet was wearing in the Next Generation and what they had at the end of DS9.

    • @theephemeralglade1935
      @theephemeralglade1935 5 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Budgets were tight in the Enterprise C era. The undershirts were shredded and used to stuff the seat backs and cushions. Many of the unsoiled underpants were wrapped around the plasma injectors to minimized leakage. Do I have to do ALL the research on these fuckin videos?!

    Personally, I quite like the Ambassador class design, it looks like it was built for hard work unlike the cruise ship Galaxy class. I think it's a pity they didn't use the ships in the battle scenes in DS9, instead of the ancient Miranda and Excelsior classes.

    • @hudsonball4702

      The Ambassador class was already on it's way out of the fleet by the time Wolf 359 happened, plus there weren't all that many built in the first place. It was being supplanted by the Galaxy class. There were already a BUNCH of Excelsior and Miranda class ships in the fleet and in mothball. The Dominion war was a good chance to clear out Starfleet's war closet. Just like the Klingons did with the old D7s.

  • @kyle857
    @kyle857 9 ปีที่แล้ว +53

    The best thing about the Enterprise C is that it manages to harken back to the look of the Enterprise A while being a perfect intermediary between the Excelsior and Galaxy class ships that came before and after. I think making it overly organic would have make it look more like the D, but less like the B, and since the Galaxy was supposed to be the revolutionary class, better to have the intermediate class looking backwards than simply being a slightly smaller Galaxy class. Kudos to the designer. It is a real shame that the model was destroyed.
    P.S. You also missed one modification. They added an excelsior rear shuttle bay upside-down and below the aft shuttlebay.

    • @achtsekundenfurz7876
      @achtsekundenfurz7876 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      01:40 If we look at the designs -A through -D, it's immediately obvious that the -D is the only "organic" design. The other ships are far more geometric, and in the case of A/B rather featureless. The -C has lots of features while still looking geometric and easy to build, a "plan B" should the Galaxy class not work out.
      The one issue with the -C design is that it starts the "stunted nacelle growth" trend. Its warp nacelles are about the length of both the -B and -D (within 10%). That trend peaked with the Voyager, which doesn't look the "warp 9.975 max speed" part at all, and was finally abandoned with the -E, which had nacelles I always thought looked like a straight evolution of the A/B ships, as if C/D never happened.

    The Ambasssdor class / Enterprise C is hands down my favorite starship design - far better looking than both the clunky, disproportionate and overly top heavy Galaxy and oddly asymmetrical and bottom-heavy Excelsior, with a very appealing and somewhat retro look reminiscent of the classic Constitution class profile. A gorgeous, perfect design in my opinion.

    Great work, man, just fantastic. I enjoy all your videos. I have done a little video editing (nothing that compares to your work, but...), and also have conducted many of my own research projects, so I can appreciate how long it takes to gather, compile, organize, etc. in order to achieve the result you want to publish. People should expect to wait for high-quality work in all things, and what you create is no different. So you need not apologize for the delay, although was nice to see your preview vid.
    I believe if you set out to do so, you could create a stunning documentary at 60 minutes run-time or more (I don't know if brand licensing is an issue with Paramount, my understanding is that so long as it is non-commercial, they are fairly lenient with fans and fan fiction and so on due to the enormous cultural buzz which always helps their balance sheets into the billions, and they might grant a commercial doc too). Your observations of the odd details other well-known documentaries fail to mention entertains me. And it is refreshing to see Star Trek documentaries that combine fun, edgy, observational humor, and cultural cross-reference humor, with more info about the Star Trek fiction itself than the usual documentaries about Gene or the fan-culture phenomenon.
    Your viewers are genuinely laughing along with you, and many of us learn new things too. I think that is a special talent you have so I hope you continue to enjoy making review/retrospective/stuff videos! Two Thumbs way up!

ST has produced some absolutely stunning pieces of design work over the years (USS YEAGER ASIDE) and probably had just as much time to come up with the Nebula Class as they did the Ambassador yet the quality between them is stark.

    Back to the original timeline (as in BEFORE the events of "Yesterday's Enterprise" altering things dramatically), you may be right, Captains Garrett & Picard may have actually known each other when he was on the Stargazer. That, however, is something that I guess we'll never know for sure.

    You bring up an interesting plot hiccup from Yesterday's Enterprise: why didn't Captain Garrett recognize Captain Picard. One could assume that she may not personally know him but most captains in the fleet should be familiar with each other's at least by name, and so when meeting in sickbay, Garrett could of had a throwaway line of dialogue: "Captain, Picard? I thought you were in command of the Stargazer..."

    Questions. I have questions. Star Trek The Generation of Next has many examples where the Excelsior class of ships were still very much in use. So then why didn't we see more examples of this class of vessel in use if they were the immediate predecessor of the Galaxy class? Other than "we had models available". We saw the Enterprise A commissioned (either created or registry changed from another Constitution class ship) very soon after Kirk destroyed the Enterprise. We saw the Enterprise E introduced shortly after the Enterprise D was destroyed. So why such a long time between C and D being put into service? Yeah, there was a gap between Archers Enterprise and the Enterprise being created. Wait! Why wasn't Archer's Enterprise the Enterprise and Pike/Kirk/Decker/Spock's Enterprise being A? Why didn't other Starfleet ships get the same treatment when their names carried on different generations of ships? Even in the first movies with the classic characters we saw large shuttle bays with many shuttles. When ships were in danger with failing systems why didn't they send off more of their crew in shuttles? They always just sit there unless it is a full abandon ship and they take escape pods. Even when facing enemies you should be sending out your smaller ships to offer more fire power, more targets and increase the chances that if the enemy disables the main ship some can escape. Even on limited warp drive they could have some senior officers escape far enough to get away from signal jamming technology and send a transmission to the nearest star base. Plus they can't pursue all of the shuttles. Did any of the other species have ships with shuttles or smaller crafts? We never see a shuttle bay on a Klingon or Romulan vessel. Nor on a Cardassian vessel. Sometimes we see small Klingon ships stopped. We don't see them join the main ship.

    I actually like the spherical shape of the deflector dish and Boussard collectors. It looks like a legit transition between the Constitution refit and the Galaxy class. I imagine the Starfleet engineers trying out different shapes and configurations to maximize warp bubble efficiencies or something, and the Galaxy was a refinement of the changes made in the Ambassador class.

    Loving that Italo Disco music! I'd like to imagine that was what was popular in the 2340's when the Enterprise-C was around. The C is my favorite Enterprise of all time, the last one to have a proper circular saucer instead of an oval or triangle or something, and I'm glad it didn't end up being the original design which I thought was hideous.

  • @Sviolinist
    @Sviolinist 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    ... Picard was out exploring on a relatively backwater ship called the Stargazer before he abandoned it at Maxia. There is no reason to believe that the captain of Enterprise C would have known every other captain in Starfleet.

  • @WardenWolf
    @WardenWolf 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Star Trek ships have a few different divergent style paths. The original Constitution class gave birth to the Miranda class. The Miranda class evolved into the Nebula Class of the TNG timeline. Constitution also gave birth to Excelsior. The Enterprise E is basically an Excelsior descendant. Meanwhile, the Enterprise C and D are more direct descendants of the Constitution.

    Nice, although you missed a few more modifications, like the chopped-down pylons, new lifeboat arrangement, new sensor dome and moved saucer, although the pylon chops didn't ever appear on screen, as the model was considered, but not used in "Generations."

    • @JunkBallMedia
      @JunkBallMedia  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Peter Guthrie Thanks. Yeah, I had plans to mention the lifeboats but since they weren't clearly visible at any point on screen, so I left that modification out. I didn't know about the new sensor dome. Is that the dome at the bottom of the saucer section?

    • @pguth98
      @pguth98 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Junkball Media Yep. It's much more akin to an Excelsior Class, while the original was more TOS-era Constitution. EAS has a pretty good article on the modifications. www.ex-astris-scientia.org/articles/ambassador.htm

    Trivia The first time any one see an Ambassador-class USS Horatio. is in the episode "Conspiracy" (S1E25) , How ever you`d never know as it floats pass the Enterprise D in piece no more than a foot across . The only way we know its an ambassador class is Picard and Riker are talking about her Captain and his ship.

  • @casbot71
    @casbot71 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The irony is that the Excelsior class it replaced ended up being in service long after the Ambassador class was retired.
    There was even a 25th century refit called the _Archer_ class, which had a transwarp core, the latest multi spectral phasers and shields, and even carried tricobalt devices.
    Everything was brought up to 25th century tech standards.
    They just don't want to get rid of the Excelsior… the Time Patrol in the 29th century probably still have a few in service with _minor refits…_

    I'm pretty sure that the Enterprise-C was destroyed after they responded to a distress signal sent by the Klingon colony at Narendra III. Which was defenseless, I don't think they fought alongside any Klingon ships, just defended the Klingon colony alone, and to the death.
