I know Johnny enjoyed this , he was a true gentleman. Never too busy to have a chat over a coffee at Hyde Park Johannesburg. RIP N'KOSI

@Alan Abrahams: Thank you for producing this Grammy nominated iconic Clegg tune. IT is indeed that anthemic cry of all displaced ethnic groups of all diasporas. Tov Tadah, bro. You certainly chose the most beautiful queen of all songstresses (Joanie) & the Zulu version (written (of course) and performed time and time again by
RIP Clegg himself. It's pretty much the "Dayenuh" Yiddish for "We've totally totally had enough. --or How much longer much we wait for respect, dignity, and change?" .) Thank you, Alan, dude.

I was a 16 year old American kid when I first heard this song. Even though I really had no idea the true meaning behind the song, it instantly resonated with me. It's been a favorite of mine for over thirty years. A beautiful song. RIP Johnny Clegg.

    Asimbonanga--------------------(we have not seen him)
Asimbonang' umandela thina-----(we have not seen mandela)
Laph'ekhona--------------------(in the place where he is)
Laph'ehleli khona--------------(in the place where he is kept)
Oh the sea is cold and the sky is grey
Look across the island into the bay
We are all islands till comes the day
    We cross the burning water
    Asimbonanga--------------------(we have not seen him)
Asimbonang' umandela thina-----(we have not seen mandela)
Laph'ekhona--------------------(in the place where he is)
Laph'ehleli khona--------------(in the place where he is kept)
A seagull wings across the sea
Broken silence is what I dream
Who has the words to close the distance
    Between you and me
    Steve biko, victoria mxenge
    Neil aggett…

i love this song.... tonight I was searching for it... had not heard it in over 20 years, did not know the name.... but heard the original, and now Joan baez... nice version... i love her, but the original is always close to my heart...

I agree! I love Joan Baez and it is a pleasant, soft, version. Often 'Westernized' versions lose the passion and earthiness of African music.

But nobody seems to acknowledge the late Johnny Clegg's authorship of this song. They would not even let him play it at the anti-apartheid concerts in UK

is this with Ladysmith Black Mambazo in the background? I recognise Joseph Tshabala's voice.

    • @odonovan

@Lesley Soskin, all I could find is that the background vocals were arranged by Caiphus Semenya. They don't credit the actual background singers anywhere I can find, which is more the pity.

Bro, if you have to ask “who is Stephen Biko?” then we can’t help you. Google, please, for Clegg & honorable Joan Baez’s sake. Ummm… Asibonanga, 1st written & brilliantly performed by Johnny Clegg, translates roughly from the Zulu to “Soon come.” An urgent cry to get Mandela outta lockdown after 27 years. The song itself, as we witness here with Joanie, is a statement of hope for all marginalized people to be set free. Als
