Pint of milk protest: Charles Walker's surreal Commons speech

  • 'I want to talk about milk,' begins Charles Walker. 'I am going to walk around London with a pint of milk on my person, because that pint will represent my protest.' In a convoluted speech, he concludes that unless you cherish freedoms, you will lose them. 'Unless you fight for freedoms, every day they end up being taken away from you'

The point he is making is people have freedom to protest over whatsoever they want to, irrespective of whether its covid restrictions being too much or too little, or milk costing too much or little, and that freedom is to be protected at all costs.

I thought this was a metaphor for protecting our right to protest, the milk is just a tool to generate intrigue and reflection.
I replied to a comment, explaining how I perceived his comments:
Ignore the milk. Ignore what he does with the milk. He is stating his ability to protest (his pint of milk) and others ability to protest (they may also have a pint of milk) is a shared freedom, even if they hold completely intention (my protest is about the price of milk) (they may have their pint of milk because the route out of lockdown is too slow)
I believe he's using the pint of milk, because it is an absurd idea, which will catch people's attention. I shall try to de-metaphor his speech and you'll see how short it is and likely to be ignored.
People have the freedom to protest, they can protest about different things, if these greater restrictions on people's ability to protest come to pass, then it will inhibit an important social function. I hope to one day look back on my protests, and be proud that my country protects our freedom to do so.
